Martha Stewart had more than a few gripes about R.J. Cutler’s Netflix documentary “Martha.”
The iconic businesswoman told the New York Times that she “hates” how the film ended with her “looking like a lonely old lady.” And don’t even get Stewart started on the “lousy classical score,” especially when her pal Snoop Dogg could have easily been part of the feature instead.
“I said to [director] R.J., ‘An essential part of the film is that you play rap music,’” Stewart said. “Dr. Dre will probably score it, or [Snoop Dogg] or Fredwreck. I said, ‘I want that music.’ And then he gets some lousy classical score in there, which has nothing to do with me.”
While Stewart loved “the first half of the documentary,” the second half fell short. The latter portion of the film includes her jail stint and career resurgence. As Kate Erbland’s IndieWire review, “Martha...

Martha Stewart‘s documentary Martha premiered on Netflix on Wednesday, October 30, and it already has its critics, including Stewart herself. The media mogul spoke to the New York Times about the doc, revealing she wasn’t happy with the final cut and the choices director R.J. Cutler made in the second half of the film. In particular, Stewart said she “hated” the final scenes of the documentary. “Those last scenes with me looking like a lonely old lady walking hunched over in the garden? Boy, I told [Cutler] to get rid of those,” Stewart told the outlet. “And he refused. I hate those last scenes. Hate them.” She also slammed the second half of the doc for focusing too much on her time spent in Alderson Federal Prison Camp after she was convicted of insider trading and obstruction of justice in 2004. “It was not that important,” Stewart shared. “The trial and...

US businesswoman and TV personality objects that she granted director Rj Cutler ‘total access’ but he focused too heavily on her trial and didn’t put Snoop Dogg on the soundtrack
The businesswoman and TV personality Martha Stewart has taken issue with a major new documentary about her life and work, which has premiered on Netflix.
Stewart, 83, one of the highest-profile media personalities in the US, criticises the production, focus and editing of Rj Cutler’s Martha. She cooperated in the making of the film, and contributed extensive contemporary interviews.

Martha Stewart opened up about her life with director R.J. Cutler for her Netflix documentary Martha.
However, the media mogul is not entirely happy with the final cut of her documentary and called out the director for not editing out some scenes she disliked.

Martha Stewart has seen her new Netflix documentary, “Martha,” and she’s not entirely a fan of the finished product. Directed by R.J. Cutler, whose recent biographical docs include “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry” and “Elton John: Never Too Late,” the Stewart documentary features intimate interviews with her as she opens up her personal archives to share never-before-seen photos, letters and diary entries from her career.
In an interview with The New York Times, Stewart gave “Martha” a somewhat scalding review and said “R.J. had total access” to her archive but “really used very little. It was just shocking.” She also revealed she tried to get some of the last scenes that Cutler included in the film thrown out.

Documentary filmmaker R.J. Cutler (“Billie Eilish: The World is a Little Blurry”) is enjoying a busy fall with two documentaries releasing back to back. Netflix is now streaming “Martha,” his searing and fascinating portrait of the lifestyle icon, and Disney+ will air his moving tribute “Elton John: Never Too Late” after its November 15 theatrical release. Screen Talk sat down with Cutler for a live interview at the Toronto International Film Festival (the full conversation is here) to dig into both films.
What’s surprising about “Martha” is how much Stewart cooperated, letting Cutler look at her prison diaries, for example. Her powerful personality is not always a pretty picture. She’s simultaneously horrifying and heroic. When Southern New York district attorney James Comey goes after her, he sends her to jail, even though she was not accused of insider trading. She was found guilty of lying about it. Cutler makes...

When I set out to see R.J. Cutler’s new documentary, Martha, quite frankly I wasn’t focusing on it other than just another screening I had, and that it would be all about Martha Stewart. So I expected it would be mostly gardening, cooking and setting the perfect dinner-party table.
Boy was I ever wrong, happily so, because this is simply a riveting, candid and surprisingly warts-and-all look at the life and times of Stewart, someone very much in the public eye for much of her career but until now guarding the image and the person behind what we thought we knew about her.
I probably shouldn’t have been surprised, because Cutler is a filmmaker who generally digs deep and manages to present portraits of his subjects that haven’t been seen before. His docus on Anna Wintour, Billie Eilish and John Belushi are proof of that, and...

By Green Lantern’s light, no evil shall escape Kelly Macdonald’s sight as she joins DC’s Lanterns series. Known for her starring role as Margaret Thompson in Boardwalk Empire, Carla Jean Moss in No Country for Old Men, and the voice of Merida in Disney’s Brave, Macdonald joins the series to play Sheriff Kerry, a “no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town.” Hardened by a complicated past, Sheriff Kerry answers the call when her community’s secrets start bubbling to the surface. While not confirmed, Sheriff Kerry may be a love interest for Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan.
Chris Mundy (Ozark) will serve as showrunner and executive producer and will co-write the series alongside Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King (Supergirl), who will also executive produce. James Hawes, a prolific TV director best known for Black Mirror and Slow Horses, will helm the first two episodes.

“Martha,” R.J. Cutler’s film about the life and career of Martha Stewart (it drops today on Netflix), is a splendid documentary. It’s a movie that captures how Martha Stewart’s penetration into American culture seems, in hindsight, as inevitable as it was unlikely. It traces how she started off as a model, then became a New York stockbroker, then moved with her publishing-magnate husband to Westport, Conn., where they bought a fixer-upper, Turkey Hill Farm, whose fixing up, by Martha (she hand-painted the entire farmhouse while listening to the Watergate hearings), became the prototype for her brand of obsessively tasteful rustic “perfection.” It shows us how she launched a prestige catering business and then, with the 1982 book “Entertaining,” launched herself as the doyenne of a new upscale lifestyle culture that would be — in a word — vicarious.

In the days leading up to the election, Jon Stewart wants the media to focus on Donald Trump, rather than the “terrible jokes” that others told at his Madison Square Garden rally.
“The media is focused on the terrible jokes that were made. Focus on Trump, who would have the power,” Stewart said in a new interview with Vanity Fair. “Focus on the guy going, ‘I’m going to deport everybody using the law we used to intern Japanese people.'”
On Monday’s “Daily Show” episode, Stewart discussed the controversial stand-up set from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who endorsed Trump and told jokes on stage at the rally. One such joke, in which Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage,” ignited a media firestorm and caused several high-profile Puerto Rican artists to show public support for Kamala Harris. Trump’s campaign later distanced itself from the remark.

Kelly Macdonald, known for her work in Boardwalk Empire and No Country for Old Men, has joined the cast of HBO and DC Studios’ high-profile superhero crime series Lanterns.
Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are starring in the crime drama, which hails from Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King. The trio are executive producing and writing, with Mundy showrunning what is planned as an eight-episode season.
Lanterns is said to have a gritty, True Detective vibe and follows Hal Jordan (Chandler), a legend amongst the space police force known as the Green Lanterns, as he reluctantly mentors Stewart (Pierre), a younger Green Lantern. The two intergalactic cops get drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Macdonald will play Sheriff Kerry, who per the character description is a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town.

The Monkees were quietly one of the most influential music acts of their generation. With four No. 1 albums in one year (a feat that has yet to be topped), the musical partnership of Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz, and Davy Jones remains beloved to this day. Many great musical artists have covered their songs, but a U2 version with Davy Jones taking the lead on one of The Monkees’ greatest hits was a real banger.
U2’s cover of ‘Daydream Believer’ leveled up when Davy Jones joined a live singalong
U2 toured their PopMart series of shows throughout 1997, poking fun at the themes of consumerism and pop culture.
However, there was no mocking the sheer joy the band displayed when covering The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer.” The Edge took the lead on the song’s vocals throughout the tour, and the crowd was encouraged to join him for a rocking version of the pop classic.

The Netflix documentary Martha, directed by R.J. Cutler, dives deep into the iconic life of Martha Stewart, revealing little-known stories and intimate memories. Stewart, renowned as a lifestyle mogul and America’s first self-made female billionaire, gives audiences a candid look at her life’s highs and lows. Here are five of the most shocking revelations from Martha, showing a side of Stewart the public rarely sees.
1. A Painful Family Legacy
Stewart shares memories of a difficult childhood influenced by her father, Edward Kostyra, who was both a demanding parent and her main source of inspiration. Stewart revealed that her father was harsh, sometimes abusive, and often drank red wine with his morning coffee. Their relationship turned violent when she got engaged to Andrew Stewart, a Jewish man. Her father slapped her hard across the face, refusing to accept her choice of fiancé. Despite this, Stewart went on with the marriage,...

Martha Stewart was “dragged into solitary” during her infamous prison stint.
When Martha Stewart went to prison, it did little to change her public image. If anything, it made many people wince at how eager our justice system was to make an example.

The ‘doyenne of domesticity’ proves a blunt and at times frustratingly opaque yet always compelling subject in a new documentary
Who was the original influencer? Cases have been made for Paris Hilton, Anna Wintour, the British royal family, the first round of mommy bloggers, Andy Warhol, Grace Kelly, the Kardashians. Our beloved DC hero Batman has had several iterations in live-action since it first debuted decades ago. While most left an indelible impression on the world of superheroes, others went so incredibly wrong that they have now left a mark on the mythos so dark that it is hard to ignore them. And so, whether fans would want it or not, many can’t help but think about what a disaster Batman & Robin was.

No matter who you think Martha Stewart is — celebrated homemaker, America’s first self-made female billionaire, close personal friend to Snoop Dogg, or even the queen of Instagram selfies — there’s more to her story.
For more than 50 years, Stewart has shaped our culture in both big and small ways, from teaching her millions of acolytes how to properly fold a fitted sheet to challenging entrenched ideas about the value of domestic work. So, to borrow her own phrase, it’s a good thing the new documentary –– simply titled Martha –– covers the breadth of her extraordinary life through intimate interviews with Stewart herself, who opened up her personal archives to share never-before-seen photos, letters, and diary entries.
“I have two mottos. One is: Learn something new every day. And the second one is: When you’re through changing, you’re through,” Stewart says in the film about her guiding philosophy.

Tony Hinchcliffe has become the most polarizing comedian in the world in the span of a couple days. His appearance at the Donald Trump campaign rally in Madison Square Garden was met with disgust from a large portion of the voting public.
Many castigated Hinchcliffe for making racist and insensitive remarks about African Americans, Puerto Ricans and Jewish people. Jon Stewart discussed this controversial showcase during the latest episode of The Daily Show, and he actually went kind of easy on Hinchcliffe.
Stewart admits that he finds Hinchcliffe 'very funny'
It turns out, Stewart is a fan. He thinks Hinchcliffe's insult comedy was totally out of place at a Trump campaign rally, but pointed out that Hinchcliffe has built a very successful career doing this very thing in other settings. Stewart showed clips of the comedian at a recent Comedy Central roast, and was very clearly laughing when the camera cut back to him.

While most news outlets have focused on Tony Hinchcliffe’s comments during Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally, Jon Stewart zoomed in on another, more pressing part of the Trump campaign: his anti-immigration rhetoric. Specifically, “The Daily Show” host went in on Trump’s mass deportation plan.
Trump has said that if he’s elected, on “day one” he will begin deporting people from the United States. In various interviews, the former president has also said that the number of people he plans to deport ranges from “2 million” to “21 million at least.”
On Monday night, Stewart assured his audience that Trump probably had a “very detailed and precise plan” for his mass deportation. He then systematically broke down all the reasons why that isn’t the case at all.
“We’re only deporting people who have come here illegally. Or people who have come here legally but sneaky legally.

In some surprising news, long-time host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central, Jon Stewart, actually isn't going anywhere! He's sticking around the nightly talk show for longer than he'd planned which means it's not goodbye just yet.
The popular talk show host first left The Daily Show back in 2015 after being there for 16 years. Following his departure, he went on to do standup comedy, as well as provide programming for HBO and Apple TV+. Then in 2022 when his successor Trevor Noah announced he would be leaving the show, Stewart came back to host on Monday nights and shared he'd only be around until after the U.S. presidential elections on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Well, now that's changed.
According to TVLine, Stewart has signed on with Comedy Central to continue hosting The Daily Show on Mondays through December 2025. That's much longer than anticipated! That's almost one year more than when he had planned to leave.

While other comedians raced to kick Tony Hinchcliffe in the crotch after his hate-filled, racist “stand-up routine” at a Trump rally in Madison Square Garden, at least one of his comedy brothers is standing up for him.
Well, sort of.
On last night’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart laughed at the hand-wringing by news pundits, assembling a montage of talking heads decrying Hinchcliffe’s remarks as “unfunny, racist, cringeworthy jokes,” “the most repulsive racial jokes about Latinos,” “disgusting and hateful,” “so incredibly crude,” “frankly, just too X-rated to play here” and “extremely vile so-called jokes.”
Stewart didn’t exactly disagree with the assessment, but asked a pertinent question: Just what did people expect?
“Obviously, in retrospect, having a roast comedian come to a political rally a week before Election Day and roasting a key voting demographic — probably not the best decision by the campaign politically,” Stewart said. “But, to be fair,...

Two males have filed lawsuits against Sean “Diddy” Combs, whom they allege sexually assaulted them when they auditioned for him when they were minors.
Both accusers, who are anonymous and therefore are named as John Doe in the filings, say that the assaults took place while they were auditioning for the music star and producer, CNN reports. One accuser says that he was 10 years old at the time. The other, who was in his teens, says that he was raped while auditioning for MTV’s Making the Band, where Combs was an executive producer.

Tony Hinchcliffe has one unexpected ally: Jon Stewart.
The host of “The Daily Show” used his opening monologue to defend the controversial roast comedian, and instead put the blame for his viral remarks on the Trump campaign for inviting him in the first place.
Hinchcliffe was one of the speakers at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday. During his set, he likened Puerto Rico to a “floating island of garbage.” His remarks were instantly met with a backlash from both Republicans and Democrats, including condemntations from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.
“Now obviously in retrospect, having a roast comedian come to a political rally a week before election day and roasting a key voting demographic, probably not the best decision by the campaign politically,” Stewart said on Monday night. “But to be fair, the guy is really just doing what he does.”

As Election Day on November 5 draws near, Jon Stewart kicked off Monday’s (October 28) episode of The Daily Show by addressing each candidate’s final push to become the next United States president. Stewart started by mentioning how Beyoncé appeared at Kamala Harris‘ rally in Houston over the weekend; however, he was disappointed the Grammy-winning singer didn’t perform. “No singing? F*** it, I’m voting for Trump,” the late-night host quipped. He then turned his attention to Donald Trump‘s headline-grabbing rally at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Stewart played a montage of clips from the rally, which included speakers such as Trump’s running mate Jd Vance, Elon Musk, Rudy Giuliani, Tucker Carlson, Dr. Phil McGraw, and Hulk Hogan. “Now, generally, that’s a lineup you see outside Madison Square Garden, yelling at strangers as they try to get inside Madison Square Garden,” Stewart joked. “How...

Jon Stewart is back and rejuvenated, on the heels of the announcement earlier today that he re-upped his deal with Comedy Central to remain as host of The Daily Show through next year.
“This is my last show before the election, but not my last show. I’m coming back, baby. We’re doing another year,” the host said, to cheers and applause, while dancing (even doing some moves from Charli Xcx’s viral “Apple” dance).
The political comic kicked things off with addressing the presidential candidates’ respective final pushes to get out the vote ahead of Election Day Nov. 5. He quipped about Beyoncé’s appearance at Kamala Harris’ event and promptly laid into the headline-churning Donald Trump rally in his own backyard at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Jon Stewart is, and always will be, the face of The Daily Show. He wasn't the first host, but he made the show what it is today through his wit, his attention to detail, and his ability to find humor in very bleak political situations.
Stewart's return to the show has been well-received, despite only being once a week, and it seems as though he wants to keep the party going. The host has decided to extend his Daily Show tenure into 2025. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Stewart will continue to host once a week through the first year of the new presidential term.

Jon Stewart isn’t quite ready to let go of his weekly Daily Show gig.
Comedy Central announced Monday that Stewart has signed an extension that will keep him as a once-a-week host and full-time executive producer of The Daily Show through December 2025. The news comes just over nine months after Stewart made a deal to return to the show he hosted from 1998-2015.
That initial deal had Stewart hosting the show once a week (usually Monday nights) through the presidential election. With Election Day looming (and Stewart set to host a live, hour-long special on Nov. 5), the extension will keep Stewart on The Daily Show through the first year of the next president’s term.
“Jon’s incisive intellect and sharp wit make him one of the most important voices in political and cultural commentary today,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and president/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios.

The comedian has extended his deal to remain as host of The Daily Show through the end of 2025. It means that Stewart will be behind the desk to poke fun at the next President either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump.

Tasked with illuminating such an enigmatic subject, director R.J. Cutler faced no easy challenge with his portrait of Martha. Known for his insightful profiles of other influential figures, Cutler’s skills were put to the test navigating Stewart’s reluctance to bear all.
Through old interviews and a trove of new conversations, Cutler aimed to craft a richly layered depiction spanning Stewart’s rise from model to mogul. But with his subject hesitant to delve deeply into certain periods, particularly her legal woes, achieving full dimension required deft work.

In Paul King's "Paddington 2," High Grant played an egocentric actor named Phoenix Buchanan, a greedy villain given to flights of narcissism. Given what Jon Stewart has said about Grant, it might not have been a stretch for him to play such a character. Grant had a bad reputation and has taken to task by the press several times in the past for losing his temper on set. Most recently, Grant was reported to have yelled very harshly at a woman on the set of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." He assumed that the woman was a visiting executive and he was infuriated by her demands. As it turns out, the woman was an on-set chaperone for one of the film's child actors, and certainly didn't deserve a dressing down.
Grant was conciliatory afterward, however. He admitted immediately to "groveling," asking for forgiveness.
Back in 2012, however, Grant already recognized this about himself.
