For a film that appears to have unfettered access to the band Kings of Leon, Stephen C. Mitchell's "Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon" offers little cohesive insight into either the band or the forces that shaped the group and their music. The members of Kings of Leon--brothers Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill, along with their cousin Matthew--were first catapulted into the public eye in the U.K., and mainstream American success wouldn't come until 2008's Only by the Night. Mitchell's documentary seems to have been made at some point during those key years, and zeroes in on a…...

Title: Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon Directors: Stephen C. Mitchell and Casey McGrath An unusually intimate peek behind the curtain of the Followill fraternity, “Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon” arrives at particularly bizarre time, coming as it does on the heels of the successful, Grammy Award-winning band’s cancellation of the entirety of its remaining U.S. fall tour dates after a disastrous show in Dallas in which lead singer Caleb Followill suddenly left the stage. After premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, the documentary bows on Showtime this evening, with repeat presentations scheduled over the next several weeks. The sons of Betty Ann and Ivan...

With the recent cancellation of the remainder of their U.S. tour due to "vocal issues and exhaustion," a move that could cost them a cool $15 million, it's been quite an interesting week for the family band from Nashville, Tenn., Kings of Leon. It's hard to say what's really going on behind the scenes with the Followill boys these days, but with the upcoming release of their rock doc 'Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon,' we got a chance to speak with director and longtime friend of the band Stephen C. Mitchell to get his take on the whole ordeal and some insight into a band that most of us never get to see.

In a move that could cost them roughly $15 Million, Kings of Leon have canceled the remainder of their Us tour after lead singer Caleb Followill left the stage last Saturday and didn't return to finish the show due to "internal sicknesses and problems have needed to be addressed," according to bass player and sibling Jared Followill's Twitter feed. There's a lot of speculation right now as to the true cause behind the turmoil, but first-time director Stephen C. Mitchell couldn't have picked a more pertinent time to release his upcoming behind-the-scenes documentary 'Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon.'

After a premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this spring, documentary “Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon” is ready for its national debut, as the band’s fame continues to grow internationally. Showtime has nabbed the rights to the feature-length film, and will air it on Aug. 21 at 10 p.m. Est/Pst. First-time director, fan and friend Stephen C. Mitchell focused the camera in on celebrity as much as it did the music of brothers (and cousins) Followil, following the gawky blue-screened embarrassments of their pre-rock days to the arena-filling moments preceding the start of their latest album “Come Around...

Kings of Leon have claimed that their new film documentary differs from others as it features X-rated footage. The 'Sex On Fire' band will premiere Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon in the UK on June 25 at the Edinburgh Film Festival. The feature-length documentary, which is directed by their friend Stephen C. Mitchell, tells the story of the band's upbringing in Nashville along with their steady rise to fame. Speaking to Digital Spy, band member Jared Followill explained: "When we first started filming stuff at the very beginning we did it because we just wanted to document everything. "Our friend pieced some stuff together and showed us a little (more)...

Filmmaker Stephen C. Mitchell has spent the last 10 years capturing the "Sex on Fire" hitmaker, Kings of Leon's rise to fame on camera and they premiered the finished product "Talihina Sky" at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York last week.
But drummer Nathan Followill reveals they had no choice but to leave some great clips Kings of Leon their days recording their 2003 debut "Youth & Young Manhood" out of the documentary altogether - and he fears the tapes are lost forever.
He tells RollingStone.com, "We had filmed every bit of the process. Us in the garage, writing songs, learning E chords and G chords, really good stuff."
"But we had a rental car, and we left the camcorder in the car, and it was stolen. They stole the most priceless footage. People are going to want to know more about those early days, but we don't have it."...

Aside from hearing a few singles, I have never gotten into the Tennessee-born band Kings of Leon, much less know about their history. With his debut Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon, director Stephen C. Mitchell manages to fill in all those gaps. The documentary tracks the large, extended Followill family from their religious upbringing to the 2002 formation of the group by Nathan, Caleb, and Jared Followill, and their cousin Matthew, and continues well beyond.
Screening as a work-in-progress, Mitchell frames a family reunion as the main event, but jumps around to a number of different aspects of the group. This awkward back-and-forth structure makes for a scattered narrative, hindering what could have been a concise piece. With that said, there is enough going on in most of these sidetracks to entertain.
Like The Fighter, this isn’t about what you presume. Replace music with boxing, and the...

True to form, the Kings of Leon rocked the Q and A after last night's Tff World Premiere of their eagerly awaited biodoc Talihina Sky: The Kings of Leon, carrying on the party into the wee hours at Marquee in Chelsea. The eagerly-awaited documentary Talihina Sky: The Story of the Kings of Leon premiered at Bmcc Tpac last night, and the band had audiences shocked and awed at the rough-and-tumble tale behind their music. Life wasn't always sex, drugs and platinum for the world-worshipped band. Growing up in the South, brothers Nathan, Caleb and Jared Followill traveled the Bible Belt from church to church with their mother, Betty Ann and father, Ivan Leon, a Pentecostal preacher. Before they were playing 'Sex is on Fire' to sold-out stadiums, they sang hymns in choirs. But all that changed when they discovered what their parents call 'devil music.' Director Stephen C. Mitchell...

Kings of Leon brothers Caleb and Nathan Followill have tried to stab each other in the past, it has been revealed. The 'Use Somebody' stars have had violent clashes numerous times throughout the band's career. Stephen C. Mitchell, who is the director of the group's new documentary Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon, made the revelation ahead of the film's release. "Those two (Caleb and Nathan) have notoriously gone at each other over the years. I mean broken shoulders, pulled hair, trying to stab each other. Those (more)...

The Tribeca Film Festival (Tff) has announced that it has added two more movies to its official lineup, including the world premiere of director Tony Kaye’s new drama, ‘Detachment,’ and a work-in-progress screening of director Stephen C. Mitchell’s musical biography, ‘Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon.’ David Kwok, the Tff’s Director of Programing, has said the festival is thrilled to include both films in its lineup, as “both complement the program well.” ‘Detachment,’ which stars such actors as Adrien Brody, James Caan, Marcia Gay Harden, Lucy Liu and Christina Hendricks, follows the lives of several high school teachers, administrators and students, and shows how their lives connect. The movie, [...]...
