James Mangold has had an interesting filmography over the years venturing in various genres and not typecasting himself to a certain type of filmmaker. Films like Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Logan, and Ford v Ferrari proved that Mangold could competently handle various genres with great relatability and emotional heft.
James Mangold most recently directed Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny
Mangold continued venturing into blockbuster studio filmmaking with 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which did not fare well. He is set to direct an upcoming Star Wars film and franchise producer Simon Emanuel seemingly revealed the film’s title. Ironically, the title has a striking resemblance to an important element of Dune, adding to the discourse of Star Wars being a Dune rip-off.

Denis Villeneuve successfully adapted the first Dune novel with the two Dune films. The evolution of Paul Atreides into a messianic figure and the rivalry between House Harkonnen and Atreides were chronicled in the two films. Villeneuve managed to bring a lot of authenticity and grandeur to the franchise making it an unforgettable experience.

One of the most interesting aspects in both films was the opening quotes that were delivered by a haunting voice speaking in an unknown language. In a recent interview, the director revealed that those lines were uttered by an anonymous Sardaukar, and he explained why a member of the imperial army was given such meaningful lines at the beginning of each film.

This article contains spoilers for "Dune: Part Two."
Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" takes a few departures from Frank Herbert's original novel, perhaps most notably in the omission of Alia Atreides. Alia is Paul's young sister, born while he and his mother Jessica had survived the Harkonnen massacre and were hiding out with the desert-dwelling Fremen. In the book, Alia grows to toddlerhood supernaturally fast and already possesses a spate of eerie Bene Gesserit mental powers. She's also the one who, as a toddler, knifed the evil Baron Harkonnen to death.
Villeneuve figured that shooting in the desert with a toddler would be difficult and uncomfortable for a young actor, so he transformed Alia into a more abstract character. Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) now has psychic conversations with the still-growing fetus inside her womb, while Paul (Timothée Chalamet) has a dreamlike vision of an adult Alia, seemingly contacting him from the future.

Denis Villeneuve Had to Agree to a Near-Impossible WB Condition to Feature Anya-Taylor Joy in Dune 2
Veteran director Denis Villeneuve is known far and wide for directing the iconic Dune franchise by releasing Dune: Part One and Part Two. Featuring iconic actress Anya Taylor-Joy in a cameo in Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve had to complete a certain condition to cast Taylor-Joy in the film.
With Warner Bros. Discovery’s backing, Villeneuve already had a tight schedule to match. During filming, however, the director made the impossible possible by finishing the project on time and getting Anya Taylor-Joy to star in the film!

Fans of the “Dune” novel series were not shocked by much in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation. However, even if you read the original book, you were probably shocked to see the inclusion of Anya Taylor-Joy in the film. Not only was her cameo a secret, but playing the unborn Alia Atreides is something no one predicted. However, she showed up and surprised audiences. And if Denis Villeneuve has anything to say about it, Taylor-Joy’s time in Arrakis is just beginning.

This article contains likely spoilers for Dune: Part Three as well as the books Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.
You are not prepared for what is to come. These are the words of promise, or prophecy, in Anya Taylor-Joy’s lone scene in Dune: Part Two. Whether the sequence is a kind of psychic chat room occurring between Paul “Muad’Dib” Atreides (Timothée Chalemet) and his unborn sister, Alia, or an actual vision of a conversation they will have in the future is obscure. Either way, the meeting seems otherworldly, not least of all because Paul and Alia are conversing on a beach. On Arrakis.
“Paul, you are not prepared for what is to come,” Alia warns. “You’ll now learn the truth about our family, and it will hurt you to the core.”

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two was recently released and gained more fans for the already-famous franchise. The sci-fi epic starred Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, and Stellan Skarsgård in lead roles. Fans and critics were equally in awe of Villeneuve’s visual storytelling, with many calling it his masterpiece.
Villeneuve changed some aspects of the original novel by Frank Herbert to fit the runtime of the two films, as well as making sure that the characters and their personalities were reflective of today’s sensibilities. The novel published in 1965 was noted for Frank Herbert’s homophobic characterization of the antagonist, which Villeneuve had changed in his duology.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two has avoided the sequel trap and exceeded everyone’s expectations. Villeneuve has done the impossible with the two films as Frank Herbert’s novels were once deemed unadaptable.

Denis Villeneauve’s Dune: Part Two was released earlier this week to overwhelmingly positive responses from critics and fans alike. The follow-up to 2021’s Dune: Part One sees Timothee Chalamet’s Paul Atreides becoming one with the Fremen, while his mother Lady Jessica manipulates events to make him the messiah of the Fremen, the Lisan al Gaib.
While a third film based on the novel Dune Messiah is yet to be greenlit, many scenes in the film set up the threequel, especially through Paul’s visions. The ending of the film also shows Zendaya’s Chani going away from Paul’s journey as he becomes the Emperor of the Known Universe. Though there are no Marvelesque post-credits scenes to set up Dune Messiah, one scene from the visions of Paul is theorized to indicate a key plot element. Spoilers ahead.

This Dune article contains spoilers.
Broadly speaking, Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two represent the best adaptation ever of the first Dune book. But this isn’t to say that these films are the most faithful versions of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterpiece. Back in 2021, director Denis Villeneuve told Den of Geek, “I had to condense some ideas to tell the story in the most eloquent way possible so that it will be understood by everybody…When you adapt it’s an act of vandalism. You will change things.”
This means that while Dune: Part Two is true to the spirit of Herbert’s immortal novel, there are some noticeable omissions. While some characters are given the limelight, others don’t make it to the screen at all. Surprisingly, when you dig in a bit, this makes Dune: Part Two a slightly more radical departure from the text than its predecessor.

Frank Herbert's "Dune" is a masterpiece of science-fiction, a book with almost unparalleled worldbuilding, complex explorations of politics, ecology, religion, and more — while at the same time being just a really good and effective epic tale.
However, Herbert was also a very weird dude whose books go to some bizarre places. Sure, there is still political intrigue and intricate themes and worldbuilding, but there are also people who become worm hybrids and dogs bio-engineered to be shaped like chairs — truly. It is this strange mix of tones that makes Herbert's "Dune" books so difficult to adapt without being either utterly ridiculous or losing that spark that makes the original novels unique.

First thing first: if you're an Anya Taylor-Joy fan hoping to see a lot of her, I have some disappointing news: she only appears in the film during one brief scene. Her voice is heard later. And that's it! It's a very quick cameo. In fact, it's so...

This Dune article contains spoilers.
After ingesting the Spice Melange, Guild Navigators working for Choam gain precognitive abilities, allowing them to chart paths for interstellar space travel, making Arrakis, the only source of Spice, the most important planet in the galaxy. Such is the premise of Frank Herbert‘s Dune novels, which inspired the 2021 blockbuster and Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming sequel, Dune: Part Two.
In the first movie, the Spice enhances young Paul Atreides’ burgeoning prescience. That effect gives Paul visions of his future leading the Fremen with Chani at his side. But it also tells him things about others, as he reveals to his mother Jessica, “I know you are pregnant.”
We here on Earth don’t have access to the Spice of Arrakis or the powers it endows. So if we want to see the future about movie releases or casting decisions, we have to rely on leaks and speculation.

This article contains potential spoilers for Dune 2.
For longtime fans of Frank Herbert‘s most famous novels, the new Denis Villeneuve films are a kind of gift. As he made clear in 2021, Villeneuve is a Dune fan first, and a filmmaker second. “To me, reading Dune is like a paradise,” he said two years ago just before the launch of Dune: Part One. “The book stayed with me all these years.” Now, with Dune: Part Two just around the corner, we’ve been given a tantalizing new trailer for the film, one that showcases just how much of Herbert’s original work Villeneuve has managed to get into the second part of his sci-fi epic.
But if it’s been a while since you’ve read the original novel, it might feel like this trailer is almost giving too much away.

In Frank Herbert’s original Dune novel, the character Duke Leto Atreides is set up to fail. Awarded the mining rights to the arid planet Arrakis by a powerful emperor, and given a limited number of days to exploit them, Leto is sent to the desert essentially to die. And in the end, he should’ve known forces beyond his control were conspiring against him from the start.
One wonders whether back in 1984 if David Lynch felt he could relate. An already impressive directorial talent behind intriguing films like Eraserhead (1977) and The Elephant Man (1980), Lynch was a 34-year-old wunderkind when he was tapped by producer Dino De Laurentiis to direct, and eventually rewrite, Dune as a sci-fi epic intended to rival Star Wars. Yet through the vicissitudes of fate—as well as budget, location photography, and post-production studio mandates—the film that reached cinema screens was a fraction of his sprawling vision.

Hear me out on this: David Lynch’s “Dune” is a lot of fun — and, compared to the self-serious posturing of Denis Villeneuve’s new version, it’s a ridiculous blast.
For years, the popular assumption has been that Lynch’s 1984 version got “Dune” wrong, while the hype surrounding Denis Villeneuve’s own adaptation is that he got it right. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Villeneuve said that he approached the seemingly cursed endeavor of bringing Frank Herbert’s 1965 space epic to the big screen, it was “about the book, the book, the book.” He added that Lynch’s attempt, much like Alejandro Jodoworsky’s unrealized production years earlier, suffered from a fatal flaw. “I don’t know if he was really interested by ‘Dune,’” Villeneuve said, so much as his own predilections as a filmmaker.
Yet that’s exactly what makes the earlier “Dune” so...
