Since 1893, when we built a city within a city out of plaster and two-by-fours to host the World’s Fair, Chicagoans have had an obsession with doing things big, boasting through the years of having the tallest building, biggest and busiest airport, biggest convention center, largest (well … certainly most calorie-laden) pizza, etc. These feats and others have led to some great press.
We’ve had to endure bad publicity for our statistical largesse also in recent years, as the level of violence in and around Chicago-area schools, particularly since 2008, is a national embarrassment.
