Exclusive: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences plans to recut the 90-minute version of the Oscars broadcast it provided to international licensees, Deadline has learned, in order to restore a key moment it had left out of the original package: the Best Documentary Feature category won by the Ukraine war-themed film 20 Days in Mariupol.
Deadline has learned the move comes after Suspilne TV, the broadcaster that holds rights to air the Oscar show in Ukraine, protested the omission of the category from the 90-minute version, saying it was “shocked and deeply disappointed” by the decision that also left the moving acceptance speech by Ukrainian filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov on the cutting-room floor.
In that speech, Chernov mourned the devastating loss of civilian life that has resulted from Russia’s invasion and urged the film community to ensure “the history record is set straight, and that the truth will...

Leonid Volkov, the former chief of staff of late Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny, was attacked on Tuesday outside his house in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Navalny’s former press person and assistant Kira Yarmysh reported the attack on social media.
“Leonid Volkov has just been attacked near his home. They broke the window in his car and sprayed tear gas in his eyes, after which the attacker began to beat Leonid with a hammer. Now Leonid is at home, the police and an ambulance are on their way to him,” she wrote in a post on X.
A later post on the Team Navalny X handle showed a photo of Volkov being wheeled out of an ambulance.

In one of the most competitive races in years, 20 Days in Mariupol won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature tonight, earning director Mstyslav Chernov an Academy Award to go with a Pulitzer Prize.
The film from the Associated Press, PBS’ Frontline and GBH came into the night a slight favorite but faced a tough test from fellow nominees Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, and To Kill a Tiger. The documentary, which premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, centers on the harrowing siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country. Thousands of civilians were killed in Russia’s assault.
On the Osar stage, Chernov, a native of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, thanked his collaborators and said, “This is the first Oscar in the Ukrainian history. And I’m honored.” But with rising emotion,...

Alexei Navalny’s sacrifice for democracy is being recognized in the place where the concept of government by the people first flourished.
Greece’s Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival programmed the documentary Navalny in honor of the Russian opposition leader and democratic reformer, who died in an Arctic prison in northern Russia on February 16. The film directed by Daniel Roher won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature almost exactly a year ago.
Navalny examines the anti-corruption crusader’s effort to investigate an incident in 2020 in which he fell grievously ill after being secretly dosed with the neurotoxin Novichok. With help from a Bulgarian investigative journalist, Navalny determined the assassination plot had been implemented by Kremlin agents. After recuperating in Germany, Navalny made the fateful decision to return to Russia in 2021, whereupon he was immediately arrested and later tried and imprisoned.

Taking place just weeks after the historic passage of a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Greece, the 26th edition of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival — which runs March 7 – 17 — pays tribute to that watershed moment in the long-running fight for equal rights for the country’s LGBTQ community, while also issuing a rallying cry for diversity, inclusion and empowerment across the globe.
“Our festival aspires to map out a detailed and thorough overview of our world’s complexity, welcoming films from the four corners of the world, which outline the radical changes, the challenges and the problems of our times,” says festival general director Elise Jalladeau. The program spotlights “the urgent call for diversity, stories of women’s empowerment [and] the visibility not only of the Lgbtqi+ community, but of all marginalized and oppressed groups of people who have suffered discrimination due to their identity,” she adds.

Jaka Bizilj, the founder of the Berlin-based Cinema for Peace Foundation which organized the airlift from Russia of opposition activist Alexei Navalny after his poisoning in 2020, has responded to his sudden death in an Arctic Circle jail on Friday.
“Seeing the kind of treatment that they were giving him, I’ve been afraid for months that they were going to kill him,” Bizilj told Deadline.
He suggested the writing had been on wall for Navalny ever since the death of Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash in August in the wake of his aborted coup over the summer.
“The Prigozhin case, the uprising, showed that Russia is not as stable as we all believed. After the killing of Prigozhin, Navalny was next on the list… I don’t think Putin saw him as an immediate threat but he was afraid of him in the long run,...

The news of the death of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny very quickly put a focus on Tucker Carlson, the right-wing talk host who recently trekked to Moscow to interview Vladimir Putin.
Carlson told the Daily Mail today that “it’s horrifying what happened to Navalny. The whole thing is barbaric and awful. No decent person would defend it.”
In the wake of reports of Navalny’s death, Carlson faced another round of backlash after interviewing Putin last week and for subsequent social media posts. In them, Carlson trumpeted a Moscow subway station and a grocery store.
Former congresswoman Liz Cheney wrote on X/Twitter earlier today, “This is what Putin’s Russia is, Tucker Carlson. And you are Putin’s useful idiot. Same with you J.D. Vance and other Putin-wing Republicans who are working to defeat Ukraine in its struggle for freedom.”
Carlson posted his interview with Putin on X/Twitter on Feb.

Director Daniel Roher is making no secret who he blames for the death behind bars of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, focus of his 2023 Oscar-winning documentary Navalny.
“[Russian President Vladimir] Putin is responsible for his death. That much is clear,” he told Deadline. “The particulars of how and those sorts of questions I don’t think we know yet, but to me, it’s obvious who is responsible.”
Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service announced Friday that Navalny, 47, had died in a prison in the Arctic Circle, saying he fell ill after taking a walk in the facility. Navalny had been under lock and key at various prisons in Russia after he returned to his homeland in 2021 from Germany, where he had undergone emergency treatment after a near-fatal poisoning attack (an assassination attempt also widely blamed on the Kremlin). Alexei Navalny is dead at the age of 47, following three years of incarceration in Russia. He was the most prominent opposition leader to stand against Vladimir Putin during his 24-year dictatorship.
Navalny was also a documentary filmmaker, directing and producing videos on behalf of the organization he founded in 2011, the Anti-Corruption Foundation. His last work before being imprisoned, and arguably his magnum opus, is “Putin’s Palace,” a 112-minute takedown of the leader’s corruption, written, narrated, and directed (though uncredited) by Navalny, which has received over 129 million views on his YouTube channel.
The opposition leader was also the subject of the Oscar-winning CNN Films documentary, “Navalny,” directed by Daniel Roher. It’s a clip from that film that’s gone viral in the hours after the Russian prison where he was being held announced Navalny’s death. (Russian officials attributed his death to a blood clot.) As U.S. streamers like Netflix and Amazon Prime make greater inroads into the Canadian market, a stateside trend has shown up north of the border: Less local coin for feature documentaries as broadcasters chase docu-series.
The Documentary Organization of Canada, releasing its latest Get Real report on Sept. 12, said local TV networks are backing more documentary series that look very much like reality TV series. “Now, when we talk about documentary production in Canada, we are increasingly talking about series,” Doc’s executive director Sarah Spring said in a statement as the seventh Get Real report was released.
Canadian filmmakers have long burnished their image with award-winning theatrical documentaries like Daniel Roher’s Oscar-winning Navalny. But the Doc report argues that, going forward, Canadian broadcasters have less appetite for one-off feature documentaries with points-of-view and sophisticated storylines, as they increasingly push for glorified reality TV series via docu-series.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose attempted assassination was captured in the Oscar-winning documentary “Navalny,” has received a sentence for an additional 19 years in prison.
The updated prison term is due to charges of “extremism,” per Russian media (via Deadline). Navalny is currently serving a nine-year term after accusing Russian president Vladimir Putin of corruption. Navalny shared a statement to a Telegram social media account following the sentencing.
“The term will be long, what is called ‘Stalinist,'” he wrote. “The formula for calculating it is simple: what the prosecutor asked for, minus 10-15%. They asked for 20, they give 18 or something like that.”
Navalny added that he anticipates an additional 10-year sentence for a pending charge of terrorism.

Updated from 10:43 a.m. story with quotes from Navalny director Daniel Roher: Exclusive: Oscar-winning filmmaker Daniel Roher, director of Navalny, is reacting to the 19-year prison sentence against the Russian opposition leader rendered by a court outside Moscow today.
“It’s very upsetting, but very unsurprising,” Roher tells Deadline. “The regime has taken the approach of what I like to call ‘boiling the frog.’ Instead of just throwing a life sentence at Navalny right out of the gate, they have been systematically giving him additional sentences over the course of many years — this latest sentence, which is coming in at 19 years, being the longest and what I think is the most laughable in terms of what they’re accusing him of.
Earlier: The fate of Alexei Navalny, the jailed Russian opposition leader whose story was told in the Oscar-winning documentary Navalny, has become even more grim.

Last year, Shane Boris received two Oscar nominations for producing National Geographic’s “Fire of Love” and CNN Films’ “Navalny.” In March he garnered an Academy Award for his work on Daniel Roher’s “Navalny,” about anti-Putin freedom fighter Alexei Navalny. During a Hot Docs Industry talk, the producer spoke about a wide variety of topics, including his latest documentary, “King Coal,” what he’s looking for in a docu, and nonfiction’s current distribution landscape.
Boris made his first documentary “You’re Looking at Me Like I Live Here and I Don’t” in 2010. The film, which aired on PBS’s Independent Lens, follows Lee Gorewitz as she struggles to navigate the increasingly confused and confusing landscape of Alzheimers.
“That doc began as a fiction film,” Boris said. “But we went into the Alzheimer’s unit to scout our location, and the person that took us around was starting...

The third annual awards were also announced on March 8 with the top prize for best documentary feature going to “Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow,” director Philippa Bateman’s portrait of musician and activists Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter.
The award for best documentary/factual series was won by Blackfella Films’ “The Australian Wars,” a three-part series, commissioned by Sbs, that illuminates and questions Australia’s dark colonial past.

Political comments were not off-limits during the 2023 Oscars Sunday night, including a Joe and Hunter Biden reference and award dedications to political prisoners.
During the opening monologue of Hollywood’s biggest night, host Jimmy Kimmel called Steven Spielberg and Seth Rogen the “Joe and Hunter Biden of Hollywood.” Rogan starred as Bennie Loewy in the director’s film, The Fabelmans.
“This is my favorite duo of the year,” the host added. “What a pair.”
Later in the ceremony, while accepting the Oscar for best documentary feature, Navalny director Daniel Roher dedicated the award to Russian political opposition leader and Putin critic Alexei Navalny. He said the film’s namesake, who has been imprisoned in Russia since March 2021, “remains in solitary confinement for what he [Navalny] calls, ‘Vladimir Putin’s unjust war of aggression in Ukraine.'”

Los Angeles, March 13 (Ians) CNN has scored its first Oscars win: ‘Navalny’, the harrowing film that follows the Russian dissident and former presidential candidate, Alexei Navalny. It took the prize for documentary feature film at the 95th Academy Awards, reports ‘Variety’.
The documentary, directed by Daniel Roher, gained new relevance after Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The CNN Films/Warner Bros. documentary, according to ‘Variety’, is a fly-on-the-wall account of the rousing populist who was once a presidential candidate — and posed such a threat to Putin that he was poisoned in a botched assassination plot ordered by the Kremlin in 2020.
Navalny was detained in January 2021 and is serving a nine-year sentence in a Russian gulag. He has spent much of the sentence in solitary confinement.
Roher, while accepting the award, dedicated the Oscar win to Navalny and “to all political prisoners around the world”, notes ‘Variety’.

While Roher admits attending the 95th Academy Awards feels “amazing” and represents a “terrific honor,” the director of the Best Documentary Feature nominee confirmed he is thinking of Navalny and that the Russian dissident is “with [him] in spirit.”

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary that bears his name, remains imprisoned outside Moscow, and thus unable to attend the Academy Awards tonight. But he will be represented at the ceremony by his closest family members.
Deadline has learned his wife Yulia Navalnaya, who also occupies a prominent place in the film directed by Daniel Roher, will attend the Oscars along with the couple’s children, daughter Dasha and son Zahar. Navalny, from CNN Films, is considered one of the favorites to win the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

Shaunak Sen, “All That Breathes”
“All That Breathes” focuses on brothers Nadeem Shehzad and Mohammed Saud, who with their assistant Salik have dedicated their lives to rehabilitating black kites and other birds in a cramped basement in Delhi. As producer-director Sen describes, he didn’t set out nor did he want to do an environmental film or a nature film or a political film. Rather, it was important to show the interconnectedness of mankind and nature: “When you live in the city of Delhi, the air is such an opaque, gray, heavy, tactile big presence…...

Oscar voters scanning their final ballot may do a double-take when they get to Best Documentary Feature: the name Shane Boris really does appear twice in the same category.
Boris is nominated as a producer for both National Geographic’s Fire of Love and CNN Films’ Navalny, a rare achievement in documentary that pairs him with the likes of Walt Disney, who was nominated in 1942 for two nonfiction shorts.
“As far as having two [nominations]… gosh, I feel lucky and grateful,” Boris tells Deadline. “More than anything, I feel this gratitude and camaraderie for everyone who made it possible… for everyone else that works in the teams with me.”
That modesty is one of the qualities that makes Boris among the most successful producers in nonfiction cinema. Often, a producer must embrace a certain degree of self-effacement for a project to reach its potential.
