So far, Loki is the only Disney+ Marvel-based series to get a second season, but we're now hearing that a sophomore run for another popular show might be in the cards.
According to Daniel Richtman, a second season of Ms. Marvel is being discussed, but a final decision has not been made.
We have heard that Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is being position as a major player in the MCU going forward, so a second season of her solo show would make sense. That said, Khan's big-screen debut, The Marvels, massively underperformed, which might well influence Marvel/Disney's decision.
Somewhat controversially for long-time fans of the character, Khan was revealed to be a mutant in the season 1 finale, ret-conning her Inhuman status from the comic books.
This new origin soon carried over to the page (though she also retains her Inhuman-ness), with Khan becoming the latest member of the X-Men,...

The path to paradise, so it has been foretold in Islamic scripture, is through loving and respecting one's own mother. As axiomatic yet clichéd as this sentiment may seem today, there is some merit to these words: to be connected to the family matriarch is to remain closely tied to one's own culture. To retain such a connection means to possess a greater understanding of who we are, not just as individuals but members of a greater cause. From a three-minute short to a one-woman play to a feature length debut, Fawzia Mirza's ‘The Queen of My Dreams' is an ambitious demonstration of what happens when that connection has been compromised, and the journey required to claim it back.

“The Queen of My Dreams” has been on its way to the big screen for more than ten years. Though not originally planned as a feature, writer and director Fawzia Mirza originally saw the story through life as both a short film and a stage play, based on her own experiences as a queer Pakistani-Canadian woman. The title is a literal translation of “Meri Sapno Ki Rani,” the wildly popular Hindi song from 1969’s “Aradhana.”
The film opens with narration from Azra (Amrit Kaur), Mirza’s self-insert, who has a complicated relationship with mother Mariam (Nimra Bucha) — but the two share an uncomplicated, undying love for the movie “Aradhana” starring Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna. When Azra’s father Hassan (Hamza Haq) suffers a fatal heart attack, Azra must join the family in Pakistan to mourn his passing — and salvage a rocky relationship with the only parent she has left.

A narrative trifurcated across decades and generations, Fawzia Mizra’s “The Queen of My Dreams” follows a young Pakistani Canadian coming to terms with her upbringing. It hits all the familiar beats of a first-generation South Asian story and, despite its novel queer bent and tongue-in-cheek casting, it does little to separate itself, thematically or stylistically, from a now repetitive form of “third culture” storytelling.
The sound of a slide projector yanks the film’s opening images into place, as though it were a slideshow of family memories. The year is 1999. The place is Toronto. Azra is a wannabe actress — a profession of which her mother disapproves. She lives with her white, female “roommate” (her parents are none the wiser), to whom she excitedly shows the 1969 Hindi classic “Aradhana” starring Sharmila Tagore. “The Queen of My Dreams” is an English translation of the title of that movie’s most famous song,...

The traditionally celebrity-heavy Toronto Film Festival has unveiled its list of Canada’s best indie films for 2023, which includes a host of first-time directors that have come to the fore as the Hollywood actors strike put local movies and talent front and center at TIFF last September.
Canadian filmmakers were able to grab the spotlight after SAG-AFTRA members barred from promoting studio or streamer projects allowed them to fill the vacuum on TIFF red carpets and at industry events.
New directors were also favorites of Toronto programmers as a shifting TIFF film market with few American celebrities in town also allowed the marquee festival to double down on finding new creative voices.
So here’s the top Canadian feature films of 2023, as decided by film pickers in Toronto.

In a world where familial ties are often tested by time and tradition, Fawzia Mirza’s latest film, The Queen of My Dreams offers a poignant dive into the dynamics between a rebellious daughter and a mother with a past not so dissimilar. This film weaves various generational narratives together, shedding light on the age-old war between convention and personal aspirations. This is a heartfelt ode to women of different eras who journey through the challenges and triumphs that bind them. The film stars Amrit Kaur, Nimra Bucha, and Hamza Haq.
The film follows Azra (Kaur), a Pakistani Canadian who isn’t concerned with conformity. Naturally, her parents Miriam (Bucha) and Hassan (Haq) aren’t happy with her choosing acting classes and an LGBTQ lifestyle. It is these choices that leave mother and daughter estranged. When her father dies, Azra travels from Canada to Pakistan to mourn with her family.

Cineplex Pictures has picked up the Canadian rights to Fawzia Mirza’s debut feature The Queen Of My Dreams, about an estranged mother and daughter coming of age in different eras, after a world premiere at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival.
Cineplex and partner Shut Up & Color will release the indie in early 2024 in theaters, with Amrit Kaur (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Nimra Bucha (Ms. Marvel) and Hamza Haq (Transplant) starring.
The film has Kaur playing Azra, a queer grad student on a trip to Pakistan facing the sudden death of her father, which sees her collide with her conservative Muslim mother Mariam (Bucha). She also plays the younger Mariam.
Azra soon finds herself on a Bollywood-inspired journey through memories, both real and imagined. Those flashbacks include her mother’s youth in Karachi, a Bolllywood-style romance with her eventual husband and Azra’s own youth in Canada.

The apple rarely falls far from the tree and religion too often convinces said apple and tree of the opposite. This is the case with Mariam (Nimra Bucha) and Azra (Amrit Kaur) in Fawzia Mirza’s Pakistani-Canadian dramedy The Queen of My Dreams. Both are / were rebellious in their youth, desperate to cut a path that they desired beyond the boundaries of Islam or their parents. And yet both discover they are confined by those same boundaries through culture, generational trauma, and guilt.
That said, this isn’t a somber affair. Not really. Yes, it revolves around the untimely death of Azra’s father / Mariam’s husband Hassan (Hamza Haq), but the tragedy itself is as much a means to expose the cracks in this faltering mother-daughter relationship as it is to express the love that exists beneath it all. Because despite the traditionally conservative nature Mariam adheres to in the present,...

Fawzia Mirza’s feature debut, “The Queen of My Dreams,” which premieres Sept. 8 at Toronto, isn’t just a love letter to Bollywood, it’s a love letter to mothers and daughters and intergenerational connections. “It’s an attempt to reflect on the compassion we have for the elders in our lives,” says Mirza.
Amrit Kaur (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”) plays Azra, a Muslim teen living in Toronto. When her father, Hassan (Hamza Haq), suddenly dies, Azra is forced into grieving as she returns to Pakistan. “Ms. Marvel’s” Nimra Bucha plays Miriam, in the coming-of-age film that crosses decades, generations, cultures and beliefs.

Bring on the bad guys! That’s been the battle cry of the Marvel Universe since before it was even called the Marvel Universe. The first few issues of Fantastic Four in the early 60s gave the world some of the best villains of all time, including the Mole Man and Doctor Doom.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, didn’t start out so well. For a long time, the big knock against the MCU was that it had great heroes and lousy villains. Sure, everyone likes Loki, but no one thought Malekith or Red Skull upstaged Thor and Captain America.
Over the years, fans and detractors have added other points to their list of complaints about the MCU. But the “bad bad guys” critique sticks around, even as the universe expands to thirty-two films and nine (official) tv series. But if you take a look at the franchise’s rogues gallery,...

How ‘Polite Society’ Created an Exhilarating Blend of Action from ‘The Matrix,’ Eunice Huthart, More
From the Bruce Lee poster on her wall to the spinning kick by real-life stuntwoman Eunice Huthart she spends hours trying to perfect, aspiring stuntwoman Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) lives and breathes action cinema. So did the team making “Polite Society,” which draws stylistically on everything from the heightened wirework action of “The Matrix” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” to the gleefully destructive chaos of “Kill Bill,” and actual, real-world karate bouts.
There’s a wonderful differentiation to the fights, which all feel as targeted and emotionally distinct as the songs in a musical: Ria slowly gets more confident, the stakes behind her sister Lena (Ritu Arya) marrying a too-perfect doctor Salim (Akshay Khanna) and acquiring a domineering mother-in-law Raheela (Nimra Bucha) get higher — and Ria’s schemes to stop the marriage get more bonkers.

Polite Society was previously reviewed at Sundance 2023.
Plot: A young woman (Priya Kansara) studying martial arts becomes convinced something nefarious is afoot when her formally rebellious sister (Ritu Arya) agrees to a marriage arranged by her Pakistani family.
Review: Polite Society is rare for Sundance these days – a crowd-pleasing action comedy. Everything Everywhere All At Once proved there’s a hunger for variations on the genre. Polite Society mixes your classic culture-clash coming-of-age tale (shades of Bend it Like Beckham or Blinded by the Light) with the type of light action comedy the directors in Hong Kong used to turn out regularly. Polite Society is a fun-filled actioner for all ages, featuring wire-fu and a whole bunch of fight scenes.
It helps that director Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts) brings specificity to Polite Society with her being born into a Pakistani Muslim family while living in London, just like the leads.

It’s joined by a handful of other specialty titles with theatrical debuts ranging from 900 screens to one, following a week where specialty and independent film was showered with kind words at CinemaCon, the annual exhibitor conference. She records YouTube videos of her home training and recites the line “I am the fury.” Her older sister Lena (Ayra) is an art school dropout who mopes around her parents’ house and often helps Ria record her videos. During “Polite Society,” writer-director Nida Manzoor’s boisterous, shrewdly funny and altogether wonderful coming-of-age action-adventure, you might try to recall the last time you’ve seen a young female on the big screen with as much fire in her belly as Ria. Was it the football-loving and tradition defying Jess in “Bend it Like Beckham,” the precocious rebel Marjane in “Persepolis,” the all-female trash metal stars of the recent documentary “Sirens” or the real-life Syrian sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini in “Swimmers”?
While the lead Pakistani character of “Polite Society”—a die-hard martial arts enthusiast played by a fierce Priya Kansara—isn’t an existing hero based on a real-life story of courage, her defiant spirit is so lovingly and precisely defined by Manzoor that you unreservedly believe in her when Ria claims: “I am the fury!”

Are we but animals? The teachings of Islam would oppose, but any melodrama fan knows that sometimes heart begs to differ. The irresistible allure of nature-calling fuels the new production of the renowned director Sarmad Sultan Khoosat – one that could be crudely described as “Pakistani cinema attempt at Bollywood”, but in fact brings several own spins on both. Let’s mention, for example, that the movie kicks off with some gorgeous views of Pakistani nature, our eyes treated to clear azure water amid lush forest, sights that overwhelmed the director himself. “Normally, Pakistan is not too good with maintaining nature…or history… not really”, laughed Khoosat in his passionate Q&a performance, “but here I needed to focus to not become lost in the scenery and not make the story all about it”. The actual focus on the movie is thus another beauty, namely the character of...

Polite Society, written and directed by Nida Manzoor, moves like a supersonic jet. That’s one of the best things about the picture. Telling the coming-of-age story of Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), a young woman determined to become a stunt performer, the filmmaker establishes a brash, bold style early and often. Big performances, big camera moves, big editorial choices, big music cues! As the pace quickens, the swings grow larger and larger.
Ria’s best friend is her big sister Lena (Ritu Arya), recently back home in London after dropping out of art school. Ria spends most of her time hanging out with two buds, attempting to stand up to her school bully (Shona Babayemi), and doing her damndest to get the attention of a real-life stunt performer whom she idolizes. Lena helps Ria film social videos of her doing stunts. All of this falls apart when Lena falls in love with Salim,...

Filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright are still making movies, but their signature styles already influenced an entire generation of artists. Toss their works into a blender along with Bollywood flair, and you’ll get Nida Manzoor’s feature film debut, Polite Society. This offbeat martial arts comedy doesn’t reach the heights of its inspirations, but its high-spirited nature makes it an infectious adventure.

Sometimes when things fall apart, you've got to kick a little butt. That's message behind Focus Features's "Polite Society," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 21. Focus Features released the trailer for the action comedy on Jan. 18, and it's all about Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), a teenage girl in London who's obsessed with becoming a professional stunt woman. School doesn't matter; all she cares about is martial arts and her sister, Lena (Ritu Arya), who's struggling after dropping out of art school. But when Lena announces that she has given up on art, is getting engaged to a guy Ria thinks is a "smarmy wanker," and is moving to Singapore immediately after the wedding, Ria is worried that something much deeper is going on - and thinks she's the only action hero who can save her sister. "They are not taking her away without a fight," she vows.

Ria Khan is “the fury,” or so she repeatedly claims, in Polite Society, an absolutely bonkers action-packed comedy from writer/director Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts). Ria’s a schoolgirl with big dreams and no filter in Manzoor’s wild and crazy feature film directorial debut.
Don’t mess with the Khan sisters or Ria (Priya Kansara) will unleash hell. Or at least she’ll try her damnedest. She’s got her mind set on becoming a stuntwoman, even though her kicks miss more often than they connect. Never mind that her incredibly patient Pakistani parents aren’t supportive of her chosen profession or that her teacher tries to squash her dreams by suggesting she’s more suited to become a doctor. The horror! Nothing will keep Ria from her chosen profession.

The teenage central character of Polite Society has more energy than she knows what to do with, and so does the film that contains her.
This debut feature from writer/director Nida Manzoor, creator of the acclaimed television series We Are Lady Parts, is the sort of wildly audacious work that signifies a rising talent who can’t wait to throw more ideas into the cinematic mix. Admittedly, not all of them gel in this raucous comedy receiving its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival before a theatrical release by Focus Features in April. But even when the ambitious film overshoots, you can’t wait to see what happens next.
And a lot happens in this story revolving around Ria (Priya Kansara), a British-Pakistani girl who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman like her idol (represented by photos of famed real-life British stuntwoman Eunice Huthart), to whom she consistently writes...

London teen Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) desperately wants to be a stuntwoman. Her family and teachers don't take her seriously — they'd rather her follow the expected path of becoming a doctor — but she's devoted: She makes martial arts videos in her backyard and writes (unanswered) emails to her idol, a world-famous stuntwoman named Eunice, asking for advice. Ria is convinced two things are destined to happen: she will achieve her goal, and her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) will become an artist. But Lena has dropped out of art school, which concerns their mother's overbearing circle of aunties, led by the ultra-wealthy Raheela Shah (Nimra Bucha).
When the Shahs invite the Khans to a fancy soiree at their mansion to celebrate Eid, Ria quickly realizes the true reason for the invitation: Raheela's handsome son, Salim (Akshay Khanna), is an eligible bachelor on the hunt for a wife. Ria is disgusted,...

If “Polite Society” were a Jane Austen novel, a big wedding would be the happiest of endings, but in the eyes of the film’s feisty teenage protagonist, Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), watching her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) trade her art career for a husband feels like Game Over. If Lena can’t make it as a painter, what hope is there for Ria, who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman? That’s the engine driving writer-director Nida Manzoor’s rowdy feature debut, which channels everything from Sergio Leone to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” in its wild and frequently outrageous route to sparing Lena the indignity of an (almost) arranged marriage.

The Khan sisters aren’t just big dreamers; they’re big doers. Well, sort of. The British-Pakistani siblings — including oldest sister Lena (Ritu Arya) and baby sib Ria (breakout star Priya Kansara) — have always strived to carve their own path in the world, but as Lena’s dreams of being an artist start to wane, Ria’s aspirations to become a world-class stunt performer take on a much more important cast. Mostly, she’s gotta turn her love of ass-kicking into something that can do nothing less than save her entire world.

Stunt performers are arguably among the most overlooked members of the filmmaking industry. After all, they put their lives and bodies on the line for the daring stunts we see in movies, both big and small, every year. Needless to say, we don't typically get films centered around them, much less give them the spotlight they deserve.
In Nida Manzoor's "Polite Society," however, stunt people might just be the key to exposing a dangerous conspiracy. Manzoor, who made much-deserved waves with her Peacock series "We Are Lady Parts," makes her feature directorial debut with this action-packed comedy premiering at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. To mark such an occasion, Focus Features released our first look at the film, in addition to revealing when audiences who are not Park City-bound can check it out.
The film follows Ria (Priya Kansara), who's on a mission to become a stuntwoman, much to the dismay of her parents.

The feature directorial debut of Nida Manzoor — the creator behind the critically acclaimed British series “We Are Lady Parts” — “Polite Society” stars Priya Kansara as Ria Khan, a British-Pakistani woman aspiring to become a stunt performer, who has always battled the expectations of her parents with her artistic older sister, Lena. In anticipation of our return to Park City next week, here’s a look at 12 different horror, sci-fi, and genre-adjacent films that are playing at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. As usual, Sundance serves as a fantastic kickoff for the festival season,...
