Controversial, far-right politician Geert Wilders could be on track to become the Netherlands’ next prime minister following a surprise victory in general elections overnight.
Preliminary figures showed that Wilders’ right-wing Freedom Party (Pvv) has gained 37 seats, putting it ahead of the GreenLeft-Labour party (Gl/Pvda) alliance with 25 seats and the liberal-conservative Freedom and Democracy Party (Vvd) with 25 seats.
The result marks a dramatic change in political fortunes for Wilders, whose Pvv party won just 17 seats in snap elections in 2021, following the collapse of a coalition government led by Mark Rutte.
Wilders’ controversial policies include an extreme clampdown on immigration; a referendum on the Netherlands leaving the European Union, or “Nexit”, and Islamophobic measures including the suppression of Islamic schools, the Koran and mosques, although he cannot put the latter ambition in motion under Dutch laws protecting freedom of religion and expression.

Mumbai/New Delhi, Oct 18 (Ians) Laying the groundwork for President Emmanuel Macron’s proposed visit in early 2023, France and India on Tuesday discussed ways to revive and speed up the massive nuclear power plant at Jaitapur in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, languishing for several years now, officials said.
Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh met visiting French Minister Chrysoula Zacharopoulou with her high-level delegation in this regard in New Delhi and discussed Indo-French collaboration in the nuclear energy sector.
The two countries also discussed ways to speed up the Jaitapur nuclear power plant in Maharashtra, part of an umbrella nuclear deal signed between India and France in September 2008.
The agreement envisages setting up six European Pressurised Reactors (EPRs) of 1,650Mw each, making it the largest nuclear power generation site in the world, to come up with French technical collaboration – but stuck owing to various hurdles for the past nearly 15 years.

France’s lower and upper houses of parliament “definitively adopted” a cost-of-living crisis budget package late Thursday containing legislation scrapping the country’s 89-year-old TV license.
The package, which has spent the last three weeks passing through the country’s Chamber of Deputies and Senate, was signed off on by a joint committee consisting of members of both houses.
French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the budget – representing some 20b in savings and support aimed at tackling the cost-of-living crisis – had been “definitively adopted”.
The scrapping of the license fee was precipitated by an election campaign promise by President Emmanuel Macron last March.
The move has raised wide-ranging questions about the long-term future of France’s public broadcasting sector, both in terms of its funding and its structure, and could set a precedent for other territories where public sector broadcaster funding is also under review.

A superyacht belonging to Igor Sechin, the powerful Russian oil oligarch who managed to earn the nickname “Darth Vader,” was seized by French authorities Thursday, March 3.
France’s finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, confirmed the seizure in a tweet: “Thank you to the French customs officers who enforce the sanctions of the European Union against those close to the Russian authorities” (via Google Translate).
The superyacht — which is named “Amore Vero,” or “True Love” in Italian — had been docked in the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat since January, according to MSNBC.

Facebook may or may not have recently threatened to shut down operations in the European Union after it made known some issues it has with its current data transfer schema.
The world's largest social media site has been known to have data privacy issues. European watchdogs like their privacy. They also don't like the manner in which Facebook sends the data it receives in the EU back to its data centers in the United States. But Facebook wants to do whatever's economically viable and easy for Facebook, so the company stated in its recent 10-k annual report that, "if a new transatlantic data transfer framework is not adopted and we are unable to continue to rely on SCCs or rely upon other alternative means of data transfers from Europe to the United States, we will likely be unable to offer a number of our most significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram,...

France’s President Emmanuel Macron outlined in a televised address on Wednesday new relief measures for the culture sector, including a temporary indemnity fund for canceled or postponed TV and film shoots during the pandemic.
Macron said the temporary indemnity fund will be launched by the National Film Board (Cnc), in collaboration with the regions and private partners, including banks, loan institutions and insurers. “Everyone will have to take their responsibilities… We won’t be able to do it on our own,” said Macron, alluding to insurers’ systemic exclusion of pandemic-related risks from their coverage.
On a case-by-case basis, the fund will aim to help French producers if they are forced to pause or reschedule filming because of the coronavirus crisis but aren’t covered by insurance. The initiative will be accessible to shoots scheduled in the months to come.

Museums and the Eiffel Tower will also close on Saturday.
Cinemas based on and around Paris’s Champs-Elysées are due to close for business this Saturday (Dec 8) as the French capital braces itself for a fresh round of ’yellow vest’ protests.
The world-famous boulevard has been a flash-point for wildcat demonstrations by France’s ’yellow vest’ movement, which sprang up spontaneously to protest a duty hike on diesel, but is symptomatic of a deeper malaise in French society over rising living costs.
