The best part of hockey comedy Goon is its ability to never forget itself. Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg didn’t write it (based on Adam Frattasio and Douglas Smith’s non-fiction book) like your usual sports film where winning or losing was the goal. They instead brought to life a soft-spoken, compassionate guy whose only talent isn’t laying guys out on the ice like his bloodthirsty fans believe. No, Doug Glatt’s (Seann William Scott) calling is as protector for his family, friends, and teammates. He joined the Halifax Highlanders to provide a spark as well as a formidable presence that would lend his more talented linemates peace of mind and confidence. Victory was never about securing a championship, it was reminding his team what hockey meant beyond the scoreboard.

If you're stoked on "Stoker," you can thank "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller, who is making his screenwriting debut with the gothic Park Chan-wook affair. Miller wrote the script under a pseudonym, and the results ended up on the 2010 Black List of hot screenplays that weren't yet snagged by studios.
Wentworth, we hardly knew ye!
Miller isn't the only surprising star doing double-duty as a writer, either. He joins an impressive list of famous, Hollywood faces that wield a mean pen or, more likely, the latest version of Final Draft.

Her "Parks and Rec" alter ego Ann Perkins is "a beautiful tropical fish" and "a beautiful, rule-breaking moth," and even "a beautiful, talented, brilliant, powerful musk ox," on occasion, according to her Bff Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). For fans of the hockey comedy Goon, starring Seann William Scott, Liev Schrieber, Jay Baruchel, and Alison Pill, you may want to start taping up your knuckles and put in your mouth guard, as Baruchel has been tweeting away about a follow-up to the indie hit. Directed by Michael Dowse, the film was based on the book, Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey by Adam Frattasio and Doug Smith. While diehard hockey fans (like yours truly) try to come to terms with another season-threatening lockout, there is at least some good news on the horizon for puck heads: a sequel to Goon is headed our way. Jay Baruchel revealed the news via Twitter. The basic gist of the series of tweets is that Baruchel will team with Jesse Chabot to write the new script and that Michael Dowse will return to direct. The original film was based on the book Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey by Adam Frattasio and Doug Smith. The indie-film version instantly became one of the best sports movies in recent memory and arguably the best hockey film since Slapshot. Baruchel promises that the cast will all be back for the sequel and that he and the creative team...

Jay Baruchel is set to write a sequel to Goon, the ice hockey comedy he co-wrote with Evan Goldberg and starred in alongside Seann William Scott, Liev Schreiber, and Alison Pill. Released earlier this year, the original Goon was loosely based on the minor league adventures of real-life hockey “enforcer” Doug Smith.
In a series of tweets, Baruchel announced he will penn the script with Goon associate producer Jesse Chabot and that Goldberg would be involved as a producer. He also confirmed that filmmaker Michael Dowse, who oversaw the first, extremely foul-mouthed film, “is directing the motherf—er.”

The Canadian actor Jay Baruchel, who co-wrote and starred in the 2011 film has revealed that he has started work on a sequel to hockey comedy Goon.
Baruchel returns to write the script with Jesse Chabot and director Michael Dowse will also return to direct the second installment of the last year’s indie hit.
The original starred Seann William Scott and centered on an ex-bouncer that leads a mediocre semi-pro hockey team to victory. The film was based on the book ‘Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey’ by Adam Frattasio and Doug Smith.
Check out what Baruchel had to say on his Twitter account:
I’d like to say thank you to all of you for all the Goon 2 love. You guys are wicked.
Though I do feel the need to clarify something from the last article I posted, Goon 2 will be written by @jessechabot and myself.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s the calm, both before and after the storm. It’s the thing that keeps you warm just before you slip into a night’s slumber. It’s the movie news, editorial links, audio-visual stimuli that you yearn for all day long. It’s the alpha and the omega of what’s happening in the world of entertainment news. It’s also quite playful. We begin tonight with a new shot of Bruce Willis in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, in which he plays Joe Colton, the original G.I. Joe. It’s hard to argue with the facts: that man knows how to look cool holding a gun, even if the gun in the hands of Adrianne Palicki (seen behind him) is far more badass. Grantland has a great sports/film intersection interview with Doug Smith, the real life hockey enforcer whose life was inspiration for the Sean William Scott led...

One of my favorite Rodney Dangerfield one-liners is “I went to a fight last night, and a hockey game broke out,” mainly because of the absurd mental image it evokes. The new comedy “Goon” is all about hockey and fighting, to be sure, but it elicits an absurdity of its own that makes it so memorable. Based (rather loosely, one imagines) on the memoir by former hockey-player-turned-coach Doug Smith, “Goon” posits the notion that we’ve all got to pursue that one thing we’re great at doing, even if that thing is...

Written by: Jay Baruchel & Evan Goldberg
Release Date: Canada – February 24th / USA – February 24th (Video On Demand), March 30th (limited)
Goon has been on my radar ever since we showed you the great trailers last year. I have finally seen the flick and can tell you that it’s a great movie with a surprisingly sweet tone beneath some hard hitting ice time.
There are not a lot of hockey comedies out there, Slap Shot is the standard of course and respectfully I would say Goon stands right beside it. There are fights, lots of blood, lost teeth and a whole lot of cussing – this is second-tier hockey after all.

When 23-year-old Doug Smith first tried out for a professional ice hockey team, the East Coast Hockey League’s Carolina Thunderbirds, in October 1988, he knew his chances were slim. For one thing, Smith had never put on a pair of skates until he was 19. For another, well, there’s really no need for another reason. If you want to play hockey, it’s a good idea to learn to skate around the same time you learn to walk. When Wayne Gretzky was 19, for example, the so-called “Great One” won the first of eight consecutive Most Valuable Player awards in the National Hockey League.

I did not think that I would be sitting here writing a glowing review of a sports film, much less a sports film starring Seann William Scott. I don’t mind sports, but I never was the guy who bought jerseys or took the night off to watch a game of any type, it just wasn’t my thing. A sport (whatever one you want to place here) serves its place in society, and I can get behind that, but I for one miss out on the comradely that surrounds the games/teams. Seann William Scott, who plays as the main character in Goon, is not a person that I am very fond of within the acting world; he has failed to impress me numerous times. That is, until now. Within the first five minutes of Goon, I was hooked, this film is much more than a sports film, yet...

Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Michael Dowse talk Goon. Hockey enforcers are some of the toughest men in sports, unleashing bone-crushing hits against their opponents. From bar bouncer to “goon,” which is sometimes used as another term for enforcer, Doug Glatt came out of nowhere to join the Halifax Highlanders, a minor league hockey team, and become a rising star despite his lack of skating skills and almost sweat temperament. Loosely based on a true story (Doug Smith’s “Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey Into a Minor Hockey League”), “Goon” stars Seann William Scott as Doug, who first has to battle his teammates when he’s chosen for the team before he even faces another team on the ice. So, Seann William Scott (Cop Out) is sort of like Forrest Gump. No, I mean in this Goon movie. He’s not very bright -- he stumbles over uttering his own name in one scene, and it’s not that hard: Doug Glatt. We’re meant to find him “sweet,” even though he beats up people for a living. He is a minor-league-hockey player, in the narrowest sense of the term: he’s on the ice to beat up opposing players and indulge the fans’ lust for gladiatorial blood sports on the ice. I think it’s also somehow meant to be “funny” that Doug is Jewish and Neanderthal-brutish, which is probably a slur on Neanderthals but is, in the hormonal-teenage-boy calculus of this “comedy,” something of a fist-bump to Jews, apparently. (“You’re like the Hebrew Dolph Lundgren or something!” Doug’s horrendously crude pal [Jay Baruchel: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice] cries with glee.) Isn...

Goon is loosely based on Doug Smith's autobiographical account of his career as an ice hockey enforcer. The character of Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott) is a fairly liberal interpretation of Smith. Because film development has turned into a game that is more competitive than most sports, we have dueling pictures brewing for a great many subjects. Hockey is a pretty natural subject for a movie duel, however. The film Goon is the first of two to come out of the gate. Goon stars Seann William Scott as a bouncer who is recruited for a minor league hockey team based on his domineering fighting skills. Magnet bought the movie for Us distribution after it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and we've already seen a Canadian teaser trailer [1]that showed off the movie's basic look and tone. Now here's the full trailer that will play in Canada; we can probably expect basically the same clip to be released for Us audiences with the Magnet logo tacked on. Check it out below. Goon, not be mistaken with Kevin Smith’s hockey flick Hit Somebody, is Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg’s big screen adaptation of Adam Frattasio and Doug Smith’s (who also co-wrote the movie) 2002 cult book Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey. Kevin Smith isn't the only one with a hockey movie brewing. No word on what character Levy will play, but a good bet might be the coach. Second, in a press release from Dimension Films, the entire cast has been announced for Robert Rodriguez's action adventure family film Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World.

Liev Schreiber has joined the cast of Goon, a hockey comedy starring Seann William Scott and Jay Baruchel.
The movie centers on a Jewish bouncer (Scott) who gets discovered while brawling in the stands at a minor league hockey game. The down-on-their luck team hires him to protect their star player. Schreiber will play Ross “The Boss” Reardon, a tough, legendary player, reports THR.
Allison Pill and Marc-Andre Grondin are also on board.
Baruchel, who plays Scott’s friend, co-wrote the script with screenwriter/producer Evan Goldberg, who wrote Superbad and Pineapple Express with his friend Seth Rogen. The story is loosely based on the book “Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey” by Doug Smith and Adam Frattasio.
Kevin Smith has not ruled out Scott as his go-to-guy for Hit Somebody, a similar sounding hockey comedy about a player whose only talent is checking and fighting other skaters.
