Although many horror films may telegraph their intentions in explicit detail, there are often films in the genre that seek to weave in and out of the genre’s confines to create a sort of hybrid film that straddles multiple genres. Not many do so successfully. The film Abigail, however, is one of the rare ones that does, thanks to some solid direction and two distinctive lead performances.
The caper begins innocently enough as a cadre of criminals execute the kidnapping of the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of an underworld gangster. Upon delivery of the girl to an isolated mansion, they are told they must keep an eye on the girl overnight to collect their $50 million payout. This seems simple enough, that is, until they discover what they are holding captive is no ordinary little girl.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix)
In crafting Rian Johnson’s whodunit, editor Bob Ducsay took a bold approach to this intricate story, placing key information in plain sight. To be sure, just watch the Netflix movie a second or third time and see how many clues were right there all along (such as a nod to one character’s true identity and the source of a crucial cocktail). The meticulously crafted story follows a group of self-proclaimed disrupters who are invited to a weekend on the private island of their wealthy friend Miles (Edward Norton). Daniel Craig reprises his Knives Out character, detective Benoit Blanc, who is also at the island getaway when a murder takes place on the first night.
“It was important to us to make sure that the audience didn’t feel cheated,” Ducsay explains, noting that they decided to be “as honest as we could be with the audience.

After staving off the challenge of Bird Box for the 2018 award for ‘best movie about a family dealing with monsters’ (we won’t even discuss The Silence here), A Quiet Place has been promoted into franchise territory.
After his film was heralded for being a brilliant, but rare standalone property, John Krasinski now faces the challenge of taking the characters he helped create (along with writing team Bryan Woods and Scott Beck) and open them up to a larger world.
It’s a big challenge. A Quiet Place seemed to have found a natural resolution when the surviving members of the Abbott family discovered a weapon with which to defeat the monsters. Still, it’s one thing to find a weapon, but another thing entirely to know how to use it.
The sequel’s opening sequence introduces the audience to the arrival of the all-hearing monsters, with Krasinksi the director at his best,...

After the surprise success of 2018’s “A Quiet Place,” it was no doubt tempting to have the sequel go big, perhaps portraying the results of the alien invasion as it laid waste to major global capitals, or even to have the resilient family from the first film encounter a mammoth encampment of survivalists.
Instead, writer-director John Krasinski (bringing back the characters created by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck) widens the focus of “A Quiet Place Part II” by the tiniest degree, introducing some new people and places but mainly keeping us within the concerns of the family we got to know in the first movie.
Krasinski’s patriarch Lee Abbott died at that film’s climax, of course, saving his family from the alien invaders who track their human prey by sound, but we see him again in the prologue, showing “Day 1” of the invasion. It’s a regular morning...

Movie audiences go to see Liam Neeson get revenge the way they once went to see John Wayne ride a horse or Carmen Miranda dance with fruit on her head; the movie itself could be great or mediocre, but there’s that satisfaction of watching a movie star do the exact thing that you want and expect them to do. As “solidly senior Liam Neeson kicks ass” vehicles go, “Honest Thief” falls firmly in the middle, nowhere near the heights of “Taken” but well above the depths of “Taken 3.”
Neeson, as a bank robber trying to turn himself in, is the above-the-title draw here, but “Honest Thief” ultimately belongs to Jai Courtney as a crooked FBI agent who complicates the title character’s confession by attempting to steal the money and kill anyone who gets in his way.

“I always felt the weight of the film,” reveals “Black Panther” editor Debbie Berman. “I knew how important it would be to people, but I never in a million years saw it blowing up the way it did.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Berman and co-editor Michael P. Shawver above.

Berman and Shawver came to the film from completely different backgrounds. Berman is a Marvel veteran, with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017) and the upcoming “Captain Marvel” (2019) under her belt, while Shawver had worked with director Ryan Coogler on “Fruitvale Station” (2013) and “Creed” (2015). Having never cut together anything on this scale before, Shawver asked the studio to “introduce us to some editors that they have worked with and liked, and that they thought would be a good fit for our team.”

“Black Panther” clawed its way into the Oscar race with a recent Fyc event for awards voters and journalists. The exclusive soiree, held at the London Hotel in West Hollywood, featured director and co-writer Ryan Coogler, producer Kevin Feige, co-writer Joe Robert Cole, cinematographer Rachel Morrison, film editors Debbie Berman and Michael P. Shawver, composer Ludwig Göransson, visual effects supervisor Geoffrey Bauman, casting director Sarah Finn, and executive producer Nate Moore. The party was hosted by LucasFilms head Kathleen Kennedy.
Kennedy, an eight-time Oscar-nominated producer best known for her collaborations with Steven Spielberg (including Best Picture contenders “E.T.,” “The Color Purple,” “War Horse” and “Lincoln”), feted Coogler and the creative artists behind this box office behemoth. The film recently crossed the $700 million mark, making it the highest grossing 2018 release thus far at the domestic box office.

“Black Panther” has received abundant praise, including for its wide-ranging, multi-dimensional female characters who get to drive the story and don’t just exist to motivate male characters. I echo all those sentiments about warrior Okoye (Danai Gurira), spy Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), scientist Shuri (Letitia Wright) and queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett). But I was just as excited as the end credits rolled to see that Marvel and director Ryan Coogler put their money where their mouth is by hiring women in prominent roles behind the scenes, and I don’t think it’s too early to highlight their accomplishments as worthy awards contenders for 2018.
The film is distinguished by its excellent cinematography, production design, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, and editing, and while it’s still too early to anticipate how this film will compare to the rest of 2018’s films I can safely say “Black Panther” would be...

At long last, Wakanda is entering the public eye with Marvel’s latest film “Black Panther,” and critics are hailing Ryan Coogler’s adaptation of Marvel’s famous black superhero as a triumph of blockbuster cinema. With 49 early reviews in, “Black Panther” currently has a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics raving about Coogler’s vision for the African utopia and its conflicted king/superhero, played by Chadwick Boseman. Kudos have also gone to Coogler’s long-running collaborators, including including production designer Hannah Beachler, editor Michael P. Shawver, and newly minted Oscar nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison for helping turn Wakanda into a living,...

I recently saw that Mondo is planning to release a vinyl version of the score for Ryan Coogler's Creed, which got me thinking about how utterly fantastic that movie is. I was excited to see what Coogler might do with a sequel (which still might happen), but I'm even more pumped to see what he does with Black Panther, the upcoming film from Marvel Studios. The company just sent out a press release stating that production is underway, and reading the cast list for this thing has me grinning bigger and bigger with every name. This cast is so stacked, it's ridiculous. (I'm not sure if I even knew that Forest Whitaker was in this movie, but I know now.) Read the full press release below, which includes what I believe is the first official synopsis of the film:

Creed continues to be a box office success and a favorite with audiences and critics. Globally Ryan Coogler’s film has passed the $100 million mark since its initial opening this fall.
The film reunites Coogler with his Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed, and explores a new chapter in the Rocky story, starring Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role.
For the director, there was no question that Creed would be set in Philadelphia, where it all began. And for the filmmakers, there was no doubt that principal photography would be accomplished there as well. In order to bridge the two films artistically, Coogler brought together the talented creative team of costume designers Emma Potter (“Song One”) and Antoinette Messam (“Orphan”) and his “Fruitvale Station” team: editors Michael P. Shawver and Claudia Castello; production designer Hannah Beachler; and composer Ludwig Goransson.
