HBO’s officially renewed True Detective for season five. Season four, True Detective: Night Country, was the most-watched season overall, drawing in 12.7 million viewers. It was also the first season that focused on women in the leading roles, and the first with Issa López in charge as writer, director, showrunner, and executive producer.

Showrunner Issa López will return in the same capacity for season five, and has just signed a new multiyear overall deal with HBO. The deal means López will create new content, including season five, for HBO and Max.

HBO begins production on ‘True Detective: Night Country’

Season four of HBO’s critically acclaimed, award-winning drama True Detective has begun shooting in Iceland. The upcoming season is officially titled True Detective: Night Country and stars Oscar winner Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in leading roles.

Season one premiered in January 2014 and starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch took over the lead roles in season two, which debuted in 2015. It took four years before season three arrived starring Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, and Stephen Dorff in January 2019.

Given that filming is just now underway, season four’s likely 2023 premiere puts it four years out from the third season.

In addition to Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, True Detective: Night Country stars John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, and Anna Lambe. Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand also star.

HBO’s True Detective has rounded out the main cast for its fourth season.

The anthology series has added newcomer Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc and Joel D. Montgrand to its ensemble. They join the previously cast Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett and Anna Lambe.

The coming season, subtitled Night Country and set in Alaska, will be the first not written and run by series creator Nic Pizzolatto (he retains an executive producer credit). Issa López (Shudder’s Tigers Are Not Afraid) serves as showrunner and will also direct several episodes.

Actor, professional boxer and Indigenous rights advocate Kali Reis is set to star opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country. With both leads in place, Season 4 of the crime thriller anthology series has received a formal greenlight by HBO.

Reis recently burst into the Hollywood scene with her acting debut in the indie film Catch the Fair One, on which she also helped develop the story with director Josef Kubota Wladyka. Her performance earned her a special Jury Mention for Best Actress at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, where the film won the Audience Award, as well as a 2022 Indie Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead. It also got the attention of True Detective producers. Reis was identified as the choice for the co-lead opposite Foster weeks ago. It took awhile for her deal to get done as insurance and other issues had to be worked out in light of Reis’ boxing career.

The network announced Tuesday that a new season of the anthology crime drama has been greenlit — titled True Detective: Night Country — and that the series will co-star boxer, actress and motivational speaker Kali Reis.

Reis (Catch The Fair One) will be a co-lead alongside Oscar-winner Jodie Foster, who was previously announced as making her first foray into TV as an adult with this project.

Silka Luisa will write the adaptation and serve as executive producer and showrunner. Moss and Lindsey McManus will executive produce under their Love & Squalor Pictures banner. “Out of the frying pan, and into the fire” is a pretty trite expression, isn't it? Things don't always go from bad to worse, right? Well, if you're living in the world of The Walking Dead, well... that's usually how things progress. You might get a few minutes to catch your breath, or tie one on in an abandoned hotel lobby bar, but eventually, zombies are going to start throwing themselves off balconies in an attempt to surround and eat you, and eventually, you're going to find out that the kind-hearted pharmacist who healed your dog bite infection is actually some kind of deranged death cult leader.

To their credit, Fear The Walking Dead doesn't delay the reveal as long as they did with the Abigail compound.

The Walking Dead was one of the shows at the forefront of the second screen experience. I think they had the first app designed for people to poke around on while watching a show. I can't remember for sure, so that might not be true, but it's definitely one of the first I used and it remains one of the more noteworthy examples of the attempt by television to integrate phones and tablets into the viewing experience. Fittingly, The Walking Dead also has a strong presence in online video, with multiple Walking Dead websiodes. However, while you've seen characters from the original series expanded upon in the webisodes (Bicycle Girl from the first season), there hasn't been any cross-over in the other direction.
