Timo Baker
- Composer
- Music Department
Timo Baker has been working as a musician and composer for over 20 years. His career has seen him playing stadium-size gigs, writing scores for hard-hitting documentaries and short films, as well as composing power-packed trailers for Hollywood blockbusters.
Originally a guitarist, Timo's ability to mould and shape his musical palette for differing purposes is testament to his deft touch and versatility as a musician. He is equally at home composing experimental scores as he is writing gritty rock soundtracks.
While Timo is comfortable writing across a variety of mediums, this Bristol-based musician has a distinctive sonic fingerprint - bringing an energetic, punk aesthetic to his compositions. He's known for carving brooding soundscapes which are undercut with urban beats, and enhanced with emotionally-charged orchestral highs.
Timo was a founding member of metal/funk outfit Crazy Gods - a threesome who, with their hybrid rock sound and quirky live performances, enjoyed support slots with The Prodigy and formed part of the inaugural Kerrang! tour, alongside Feeder and Lodestar. Crazy Gods' debut album, Heavy Planet, was produced by Warne Livesey, the technological wizard behind a host of chart successes including The The, Midnight Oil and Jesus Jones.
The dissolution of Crazy Gods in 1998 served as a starting point for a new direction that saw Timo working as in-house composer at an interactive TV company. It was a pivotal time during which Timo honed his talent for writing to picture by dovetailing his understanding of visuals with his compositional skill.
After relocating to Bristol, Timo's career as a composer really kicked off with commissions for ads, promos and games including a punchy rock score for PlayStation's Ghost Rider. On the TV side of things Timo has since written scores for a host of feature-length documentaries including National Geographic's Secrets of Wild India, narrated by David Attenborough and Stan Lee's Superhumans, as well as A Cosmological Fantasia, a short film based on footage from Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe. TImo composed the score for programmes River Monsters, Survive The Tribe, and a BBC-Sega collaboration, Orbi, all of which have gone on to be successes around the globe.
Timo expanded his repertoire to write film trailers for LA-based agents, Pusher Music alongside the likes of DJ Shadow and Orbital. Commissions include music for The Adjustment Bureau and Man on a Ledge film trailers amongst others. Similarly, tracks from his commercially-released album Digital Scars were licensed for use in the hugely successful CSI: New York series.
Timo's reputation as a skilled, inventive musician has seen him expand his skills: from producing re-mixes for signed bands Hard-Fi and Sanguine, to writing the score for The Kismet Bureau, a film short which has been shown at international film festivals and just received an RTS award for Best Short Film.
