Unacceptable though it may be, we now have to talk about Star Wars: The Bad Batch in the past tense. As of this week, the animated spin-off of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, created by Dave Filoni and co-developed by Jennifer Corbett, has become a part of Star Wars history, as consequential to the canon as it doubtlessly is to the hearts and minds of everyone who watched it.

Finally, Disney+’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch has its priorities sorted.
The first two seasons’ cameo-heavy Mission of the Week format quickly grew stale, but as creator Dave Filoni, supervising director Brad Rau and head writer Jennifer Corbett disappeared deeper into their Disney-sponsored sandbox, it became clear that this wasn’t merely a graveyard of shameless walk-backs or desperate reinforcements of messy canon. The Bad Batch was always about underdogs, about displaced war heroes struggling to survive in a galaxy that has no need for them.

The third and final episodes of Star Wars: The Bad Batch will conclude the series, and as such, fans are eagerly awaiting its release on Disney+. Not too long after the conclusion of the second season, it was confirmed that the animated spin-off Star Wars: The Clone Wars would wind up with season 3.
Because of this, the third season’s plot was immensely considerable, involving The Bad Batch’s characters coping with Tech’s death’s aftermath, Omega’s imprisonment by the Empire, and Crosshair’s eventual redemption.

With the implications of the larger canon, it is hard to see Omega having a happy ending. Fans should be ready for a ‘bittersweet’ conclusion to Omega’s story, as voice actress Michelle Ang recently hinted.

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
The return of Asajj Ventress in Star Wars: The Bad Batch is an intriguing new mystery for fans, especially those who read of her death in the 2015 novel Dark Disciple by Christie Golden, which is set during the Clone Wars, right before the events of Revenge of the Sith. In that book, she sacrificed herself to save her lover, Jedi Master Quinlan Vos, from Count Dooku’s Force lightning, but just an in-universe year after her death, she’s somehow back and meeting up with Clone Force 99 on The Bad Batch.
So, what’s behind her resurrection? It’s a mystery with no answer from Star Wars. But plenty of theories…
How Is Asajj Ventress Back?
Unsurprisingly, the prevailing theory regarding her return from the grave goes back to a specific moment in Dark Disciple. In the book, she and Vos team up to try and kill Dooku.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars saw Asajj Ventress as the animated series’ antagonist, voiced by Nika Futterman. It took no time for the character to become a fan favorite which is why her “end” in the 2015 novel, Star Wars: Dark Disciple, left the fandom in shock as they grieved their favorite ex-Sith. Now, with the return of The Bad Batch, fans will finally get to see more of Ventress.

Clone Force 99 is back in action.
The last time we saw the genetically altered clone troopers in Disney+’s The Bad Batch, they were dealing with the presumed death of Tech, who’d died during a mission, and the loss of clone Omega, who’d been captured by the Empire. Omega, however, had also reunited with Kaminoan scientist Nala Se as well as Crosshair, both of whom seemed to be waking up to the Empire’s true (evil) nature. Meanwhile, Hunter and Wrecker were determined to track down Omega (and, perhaps, Crosshair), while Echo joined up with Rex to fight the Empire.
On Feb. 21, the third and final season of the animated series debuts on Disney+ (watch the trailer). Disney+ released an official description for the third season: “In the epic final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, the Batch will have their limits tested in the fight to...

Like droids, the live-action "Star Wars" films rarely pause to explore the inner lives of clones and their larger place in a galaxy far, far away. It's what makes "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" such an essential piece of storytelling to the franchise's greater mythology. The spinoff of the "Clone Wars" animated series focuses on the adventures of the titular clone squad (aka. Clone Force 99), a small band of clones with unique genetic or physical traits that was introduced during its parent show's final season. However, for as much as it operates as a small-scale story about a family struggling to survive, "The Bad Batch" also addresses much bigger issues concerning clone rights and allegiances in the wake of the Clone Wars.
"The Bad Batch" season 1 begins, as it must, with Emperor Palpatine issuing Order 66, activating the inhibitor chips built into all the clones' brains and forcing them to execute any Jedi on sight.

The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) went on strike on May 2 after the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to meet the union’s reasonable terms. With the AMPTP refusing to negotiate further, the strike could last for a while and put a number of projects on hold, including the many Star Wars movies and TV shows that are currently in production.
Ahsoka is out in August, while Skeleton Crew is presumably safe from delay given how far along it is in the production process — filming wrapped in January — barring any necessary reshoots, of course. But others, like the second season of Andor, will have a more difficult time during the strike.
Here are the upcoming Star Wars projects that have been or could be affected by the strike, depending on how long it lasts. And remember, if you’re disappointed by these potential delays don...

During the "Star Wars" Celebration panel for "The Bad Batch," there was a lot of talk about the events of season 2. It was the first time the cast and crew were able to talk openly with a crowd about the shocking end of the season and the death of one of the Bad Batch.
In the season's climactic final episode, Tech — the most technologically savvy and neurodiverse of Clone Force 99 — is forced to sacrifice himself in order to save the rest of the Bad Batch. They decided they had to infiltrate Governor Tarkin's retreat on his home planet of Eriadu and there is a cost to this mission. Tarkin puts them in a position where there's no other option and for the Bad Batch to escape, Tech has to die.

To infiltrate an Imperial refinery on the Imperial-occupied planet of Morak, the Mandalorian has to bend his Mandalorian Creed to don the Imperial armor and then play the role of a loyal Imperial underling in order to snag intel that could save the life of Grogu, his foundling. "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" started out with a very cool idea — what if the A-Team but with clones? That sounds awesome! And indeed, their first introduction in the final season of "The Clone Wars" ruled and made a pretty good case for them getting their own spin-off. Then we actually got the first season of "The Bad Batch" and ... it didn't fully justify its existence. Between the whitewashing, the softening of hard questions, or the show's total avoidance of them made this feel like an undercooked cartoon.
Things are much better in this second season. Even if the first few episodes have had a lot of side missions, they each offer something new to the "Star Wars" canon, like a racing episode or a very cool treasure-hunting mission. But the season is also more focused, more willing to present harder-hitting questions and interrogate its own format, with the characters...

A brand new episode of "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" means a brand new adventure for Clone Force 99 (Dee Bradley Baker). This time, they are between missions and looking to repair their ship. While hunting for parts in the junkyard with Wrecker, Omega (Michelle Ang) finds a star compass. When she takes it back to Cid's, the archeologist, treasure hunter, and pirate Phee Genoa (Wanda Sykes) is there and takes an interest.
Convinced the compass is a rare find and will lead to valuable treasure, she's able to persuade the Bad Batch to accompany her to a distant, uncharted planet in the Kaldar Trinary System to seek the treasure. From there, they follow clues that take them to an ancient relic of a civilization that predates the Republic and the Jedi, but it holds a terrible secret they don't fully understand.

The "Star Wars" TV shows, particularly the animated ones, are arguably the purest expression of George Lucas' desire to make a sci-fi movie inspired by the serials he watched growing up. With these shows, the franchise is able to explore a vast variety of stories, themes, and genres. We've got zombie horror episodes in "The Clone Wars," a rock opera in "Star Wars Visions," and more. Likewise, these shows have introduced meaningful additions to the lore, like with the "Ghost of Mortis" episodes and the in-canon introduction of Darth Bane, all while fixing a lot of the problems with the prequel trilogy.
Granted, they are still TV shows, ones aimed at younger audiences too, so they can't be all plot or lore drops. We also get downtime episodes and standalone stories, ones with side quests and silly moments, which nevertheless help make the galaxy feel lived-in and with stories that...

To be a clone soldier is to have an unlucky station in life throughout the "Star Wars" franchise. Bred and conditioned for military servitude, the clone troopers (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker), known as Clone Force 99 aka the Bad Batch, don't really know a galaxy without war. As the Republic morphed into the Empire, the clone troopers confront a more precarious and expendable position in the galaxy as conscripted stormtroopers usurp their military roles. Even clones loyal to Emperor Palpatine don't get the best treatment. This slams in full force in season 2 of the "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" CGI cartoon, the follow-up to "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" animated series.

"Star Wars" is often best in animation, where it can be allowed to be as weird and fantastical as the serials that inspired George Lucas in the first place, or as serious and operatic as any of the movies, all while giving us vastly different visual styles that can reflect the viewpoint of whoever is telling that story. Take Genndy Tartakovsky's "Clone Wars," which completely disregarded physics in order to depict the Jedi as the mythological, invincible warriors that citizens saw them as during the war, or how "Star Wars Visions" allowed different studios to reinterpret what "Star Wars" even is, giving us everything from samurai tales to a rock opera.
Or take "The Bad Batch," which follows in the style of "The Clone Wars" and its hyperrealistic cinematography with cartoonish character designs, giving viewers "Star Wars" tales on a smaller scale than any of the movies could while still feeling larger than life.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Episode 16
The Bad Batch has answered its central question: “What happened to the clones during the Empire?” As with many things in Star Wars, the answer is that a lot ended in fire. Like most of the show, it’s fun but inconsequential, a bingeable, cinematic adventure that is lovely to watch on a big screen the first time and starts to get stale on the second.
Part 1 of the finale saw the Batchers return to their former home, and the Empire open fire. “Kamino Lost,” directed by Saul Ruiz and written by Jennifer Corbett, returns to them in an even worse spot. Now, they need to escape a crumbling city that has fallen all the way to the ocean floor (or at least an outcropping of the underwater tunnels). As they make their tense way toward the surface,...

Disney+ has renewed Lucasfilm animated series “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” for Season 2, which will stream in 2022.
“The entire Lucasfilm Animation team and I would like to thank Disney+ and our fans for the opportunity to continue telling the story of the Bad Batch,” executive producer Dave Filoni said in a statement on Thursday.
The animated series has followed the story of Clone Force 99, a group of “five enhanced clones, more capable than an army” as they navigate the galaxy after the Clone Wars have ended. The group is comprised of Hunter, Echo, Tech, Wrecker and Crosshair, who each possess an incredible skill, largely connected to their names.
Hunter is a skilled fighter, Echo is a cyborg that can interface with the team’s ship, Tech is, naturally, the tech guy, Wrecker likes to destroy things and Crosshair strikes from a distance. And clearly, fans have come to love this motley crew.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Episode 12
Look at that: it’s a two-parter after all. The Bad Batch take a bit more of a front role in their own show as they reluctantly help out in “Rescue on Ryloth,” directed by Nathaniel Villanueva and written by Jennifer Corbett. The show still feels too entwined with everything else in Star Wars to have mass appeal, but this episode in particular learned more from Rebels than from The Clone Wars in terms of giving characters the time to talk to one another and allowing beats to sink in between all the action.
I almost hoped last week’s episode was a one-off, just one story in an anthology, but am at the same time happy to see these characters back. It helps that everyone in this arc is just so charming. Twi’lek...

Sometimes it seems like every inch of territory in the Star Wars galaxy has been explored. From the fate of the Jedi after Order 66 to every minute detail of the Galactic Civil War, the franchise has always been interested in tracing and expanding its own history.
That tradition continues with the new Disney+ animated series The Bad Batch, which explores the lives of clone troopers in the aftermath of the Clone Wars. This dark period of transition from Republic to Empire was previously chronicled in the now non-canon Legends continuity, but now we have a canon interpretation of it that lines up with The Clone Wars (mostly).
The Bad Batch follows a group of clone outcasts who get a first-hand look at what the Clone Army has become during the rise of the Empire. So far, the show has made three main points about this drastic sea change: the transition...

Warning: The following article contains spoilers from “Aftermath,” Episode 1 of the Disney+ animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch
Here’s a big deal for fans of the Dave Filoni-created Star Wars animated canon: An old character made an appearance on the first episode of the new Star Wars animated series The Bad Batch which dropped in the middle of the night. The newest Star Wars hero is a bit of a mystery. Omega, a young clone who joins the titular heroes in The Bad Batch, is a mix of audience surrogate and riddle. She’s eager to join the fight, and has some skills of her own, but she’s obviously not cut from the exact same cloth as the other clones. That serves her well as she escapes Order 66 from the clones’ side, with her and the Batch some of the few residents of Kamino who don’t go all-in on the Empire’s slaughter. So, who is Omega, really?

While the Star Wars Original Trilogy has been explored thoroughly for more than 40 years, the period between the Prequels and the Originals is less well-trodden. Following in The Clone Wars and Rebels‘ footsteps, The Bad Batch takes a deep dive into the rise of the Empire. This means we get to see familiar characters, planets, ships, and technology in a moment of transition, as a Republic becomes something more twisted and sinister in the hands of the Sith.
Unsurprisingly, “Aftermath,” which is directed by Steward Lee, Saul Ruiz, and Nathaniel Villanova, and written by Jennifer Corbett and Dave Filoni, is full of connections and nods to other parts of the Star Wars universe.
Here are all of the Star Wars easter eggs and references we spotted in this episode:

The Bad Batch Episode 1
During the opening scene of The Bad Batch, the new animated series set during the rise of the Empire, the The Clone Wars logo burns away. At once blatant marketing and a promise of something new, the logo neatly explains what The Bad Batch is.
As Jennifer Corbett (producer and head writer) and Brad Rau (producer) said during a press junket ahead of the May 4 premiere, this show is a spiritual successor and also a direct sequel to The Clone Wars. The beginning of the new show draws from the epic scale of The Clone Wars‘ series finale (and the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy which it parallels). But while the action and heart are all there on paper, stock characters and a too-straightforward plot drag down the 70-minute premiere.
The five characters of the Bad Batch, lead by elite clone Hunter,...

“Stars Wars: The Bad Batch,” the animated “Clone Wars” spin-off series, kicks off the franchise’s May the Fourth celebration Tuesday on Disney+, exploring a rapidly changing galaxy and bridging the original trilogy.
