Indie films are often talked about for the grand issues that they deal with. But Hemant Gaba’s directorial debut Shuttlecock Boys entices with its simplicity. The best part of the film are its characters—the shuttlecock boys—who are surprisingly real in depiction and effortless in their performances.
There is Loveleen (Manish Nawani) who works in a call center and dreams of buying a red Swift car; Manav (Aakar Kaushik), a small time chef from Amritsar who is faced with a shut down-restaurant, Pankaj (Alok Kumar) who has been struggling to clear his Chartered Accountancy exams and Gaurav (Vijay Prateek) who sells credit cards but wants to marry his demanding girlfriend.
They are the regular, middle class boys with no extraordinary ambitions; ubiquitous characters that one comes across every day. They are struck in the grind of life: unfulfilling jobs and unfulfilled expectations of loved ones. What brings them...

This initiative of PVR in releasing small-budget Indie films is getting rather interesting and what began as just another movie show to attend, I’ve now begun looking forward to what the ‘directors rare’ series puts forth week on week. Now showing this week is Shuttlecock Boys which as the extremely nervous debutant director Hemant Gaba clarifies much in advance has less to do with the badminton game. A story of 4 friends, each harbouring individual aspiration in a middle class setting where dreams are bigger than the pockets that can afford them.
We have our usual suspects – the stud Loveleen (Manish Nawani), the nerd Pankaj (Alok Kumar), the foodie Manav (Aakar Kaushik) and the idealist Vijay Prateek (Gaurav). Each battling own demons in personal and professional ways, they set out to start an enterprise together; laying foundation initially on each one’s merits and elevating it thru dedication and an extra tadka of bromance.

New Delhi, July 20: Director Hemant Gaba, who shot his internationally acclaimed "Shuttlecock Boys" here, feels that with increasing numbers of Delhiites entering the film line, it is high time the capital had its own movie-making infrastructure.
Made on a shoestring budget of Rs.35 lakh with a crew of 25, shooting "Shuttlecock Boys" here was not easy.
"It's time that Delhi should have it's own film setup. I have been born.

It has been a couple of days since I returned from my pilgrimage-like trip to the 9th Bring Your Own Film Festival at Puri, Odisha. Sea and cinema makes a deadly potion, whose hangover ensures that for the rest of my life, I’ll be in Puri every second last week of February. Add to that a bunch of crazy, carefree people who are singing, laughing and hooting away to glory for no apparent reason, for five days at a stretch, in a world that can’t stop counting fingers. Good food, cheap alcohol, legal grass and a free beach on which musicians, poets, filmmakers, painters, sculptors, dancers let go of all that is tangible and release their medium of expression. Puri turns paradise indeed, as my imageries of the Beat Generation come alive.
As wild as it sounds, the 9th Byoff was inaugurated by the...

First-time director Hemant Gaba gets candid about the struggle of making his first feature film independently
My biggest struggle in realizing the film started when a leading post-production lab ruined all the film negatives during handling. One of their heads of management had the audacity to ask if I “belonged to any film family” which, of course, I didn’t.
As a teenager I played badminton with my friends on the streets in our neighbourhood. Little did I know that I would weave this into the narrative of my debut feature film Shuttlecock Boys. Back then I didn’t even know that I would ever want to make films.
In my 20s I worked in the software industry as a programmer and analyst. Looking back, those seven years of writing the code were the most monotonous years of my life. I had failed to secure the opportunity to study music...
