Plot: The series will follow Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor, and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.
Review: Earlier this year, AppleTV+ debuted a series about alternate realities and dueling versions of characters in Constellation. That series carried a heavy science fiction focus that showed how parallel universes can carry paranoid variations on the lives of characters shifting between worlds. Dark Matter mines similar territory but in a far more grounded manner. Using the conceits of the thriller genre, Dark Matter adapts...

We thought what is now known as Caddo Lake (shortened from Vanishings At Caddo Lake) might drop last year but it looks like a 2024 release was planned. Filmed in September of 2021 in Shreveport, Dylan O’Brien, Eliza Scanlen and Lauren Ambrose topline the thriller by tandem Celine Held and Logan George. They broke out with Topside – their feature debut landed at the Critics’ Week in Venice back in 2020. Prior to that, they were at Sundance with their short Lockdown (2019), and the year before that Caroline (2018) was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or short film in Cannes.…...

A year and a half ago, we heard that M. Night Shyamalan was producing the thriller The Vanishings at Caddo Lake, which was being directed by the duo of Celine Held and Logan George – who made their feature directorial debut with the 2020 drama Topside and went on to direct episodes of Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series Servant. That movie, which now has the shorter title Caddo Lake, still doesn’t have a release date… but it does have a rating. The Motion Picture Association’s ratings board has given Caddo Lake a PG-13 for some disturbing/bloody images, thematic elements, and brief strong language.
Shyamalan has only made two R-rated movies (The Happening and Knock at the Cabin), so it’s not surprising to hear that this Shyamalan-produced project has earned a PG-13.
Held and George wrote the screenplay for the film, crafting the following story: When an 8-year-old girl mysteriously vanishes on Caddo Lake,...

This one-minute clip from Apple TV+’s Servant season four episode two is creepy, but not in a supernatural way. Instead, it’s creepy as in the entire neighborhood appears to have become infested with bed bugs. But is that really what’s going on? Odds are bed bugs are just a cover for something sinister that’s about to happen to the Turners.
Episode two of the fourth and final season is titled “Itch,” of course, and will find Leanne tormenting Dorothy as chaos overtakes Spruce Street. Episode two will premiere on Friday, January 20, 2023.

Servant executive producer M. Night Shyamalan once said that his dream version of the Apple TV+ series would consist of sixty episodes, but he later whittled that number down, telling Uproxx that “I outlined the whole series over the pandemic and figured out where I wanted it to go and how many episodes it would be. And it came out to 40.” Each season of Servant consists of ten episodes, so it will be reaching Shyamalan’s goal of 40 at the end of season 4… and Apple TV+ has now confirmed that Servant season 4 is the “final chapter” of the show, which will bring viewers “an epic and emotional conclusion of the Turner story.” Along with that confirmation comes the unveiling of a teaser trailer, which you can see in the embed above, and some first look images, which can be found at the bottom of this article.

In celebration of Halloween, one of the spookier TV shows currently airing has set its end date. “Servant,” the Apple TV+ series, will premiere its fourth and final season on January 13, 2023.
Created by Tony Basgallop and executive produced by director M. Night Shyamalan, “Servant” stars Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebbell as Dorothy and Sean Turner, a married couple reeling from the death of their infant son Jericho, which left Dorothy in a catatonic state. In an effort to help his wife heal, Sean begins transitory object therapy with a lifelike “reborn” doll, and the two hire a nanny, Leanne (Nell Tiger Free), to move in and look after the “baby.” But when Sean and Dorothy’s brother Julian (Rupert Grint) grows suspicious of the seemingly supernatural Leanne, they stumble upon a bizarre conspiracy involving a cult with its own agenda involving the family.

It’s rare to be able to say that a movie shows a side of New York you’ve never seen before, but “Topside” does just that. A subterranean drama whose first act is set below the city, where a downtrodden community has made a home of long-abandoned subway tunnels, this quietly affecting indie film from first-time helmers Logan George and Celine Held (who also stars) resides somewhere between “Dark Days” and “Leave No Trace” without feeling as familiar as its premise might suggest. That’s thanks not only to Held, who pulls double duty both in front of and behind the camera, but also to a moving performance by newcomer Zhalia Farmer that’s reminiscent of Quevanzané Wallis in “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”
“Stars don’t come down this far,” Nikki (Held) tells her five-year-old daughter Little (Farmer) one night in their makeshift hovel. They’re eating peanut butter straight from the jar,...

"She belongs with me!" Vertical has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled Topside, which originally premiered in 2020 in the Critics' Week sidebar at the Venice Film Festival. There it won the Mario Serandrei Award for Best Technical Achievement at the fest, and played at a few other fests in 2021. Deep in the underbelly of New York City, a 5-year-old girl and her mother live among a community that has claimed the abandoned subway tunnels as their home. When a sudden eviction forces them all above ground, their world is thrown into unimaginable chaos. Described as a "riveting feature debut" from filmmakers Logan George & Celine Held. Held also stars, alongside astonishing first-time performer Zhaila Farmer as "Little", in this affecting tale of the deep love and sacrifice rooted in the parent-child bond. With Zhaila Farmer, Jared Abrahamson, and Fatlip. Reminds me of the film Capernaum - also about kids living in poverty.

‘Topside’ Trailer: Riveting Venice Winner Echoes ‘Dark Days’ in Portrait of Life Below NYC’s Subways
Life lived below the subways, deep in the underbelly of New York City, has rarely been explored onscreen since the 2000 black-and-white documentary “Dark Days” took audiences below the surface. In Logan George and Celine Held’s festival-favorite debut “Topside,” the filmmakers root a mother-daughter story in these very depths. The film won the Best Director prize at SXSW 2020 and the Mario Serandrei Award for Best Technical Achievement at the Venice Film Festival later that year. Now, the film is opening from Vertical Entertainment in select theaters and on digital and VOD on Friday, March 25. Exclusive to IndieWire, watch the trailer below.
In this riveting film, a five-year-old girl and her mother live among a community that has made long-abandoned subway tunnels their homes. When the pair is forced to head above ground into a cold winter night, Little (Zhaila Farmer) and her mother Nikki (played by co-director Held) are plunged...

One of the most chilling shows on TV has a return date.
Apple TV+ today unveiled a first-look teaser at the third season of the acclaimed Servant.
The 10-episode third season will debut with the first episode on Friday, January 21, 2022, followed by one new episode weekly, every Friday.
From executive producer M. Night Shyamalan, Servant follows a Philadelphia couple in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home.
The new episodes pick up three months after Servant Season 2, with Leanne struggling to come to terms with the fact that no one has come looking for her.
She believes they will come looking eventually, while the Turners want to raise Jericho and move on with their lives.
Unfortunately, the past always comes back to haunt the characters on this show, so it's going to be a complicated chain of events.

Is there anything more romantic than a yacht in New York City’s harbor, illuminated by the yellow-orange of the setting sun and backdropped by the Statue of Liberty, a mirage in the distance? What about if the sunset-drenched yacht was filled with Amazon Studios producers and television stars, relieved that their show, about love and human connection filmed in the middle of Covid-19, finally made it to the small screen?
On Monday night, Prime Video and Fire TV hosted the premiere party for the second season of “Modern Love,” Amazon’s anthology series based on the New York Times column, on a yacht overflowing with lobster rolls and service people dressed in sailor uniforms.
“I’m seeking out things that are escapist,” said Andrew Rannells without a touch of irony, who directed and wrote one of the season’s episodes based on a fraught one-night stand from his young adulthood.

Before this year’s Venice Film Festival comes to a close with Saturday’s announcement of the official selection awards, the fest’s autonomous sections got the ball rolling Friday with their own prizes.
Coming out on top in the Venice Days program was Russian director Philipp Yuryev’s debut feature “The Whaler Boy,” an offbeat story of a teenage whale hunter on the Bering Strait, who sets out to meet the webcam model with whom he’s become obsessed.
The film received the Director’s Award — which carries a cash prize of €20,000 for Yuryev and Paris-based sales agent Loco Films — from a jury headed by Nadav Lapid, the Israeli auteur who won last year’s Berlinale Golden Bear for “Synonyms.” Unusually, the jury’s extended deliberations were live-streamed to the public. In a statement, Lapid praised Yuryev’s film for “[depicting] a world that has not yet been explored with...

Beneath the New York City subway system lies a shadowy labyrinth teeming with people living on the margins of society. It’s a natural cinematic backdrop, and the 2000 documentary “Dark Days” probed it so well it has served as the last word on the subject for the past 20 years. However, the riveting drama “Topside” finds a unique way in. The directorial debut from co-directors Logan George and Celine Held (who also stars) around the prospects of raising a child in that darkness, only to find that the world above contains much scarier prospects.
Despite its rough-hewed aesthetic and a jittery, moment-to-moment pace, “Topside” adopts a familiar subgenre of kid-in-peril movies, from “Little Fugitive” to “The Florida Project.” Much of the drama takes place from the innocent perspective of five year-old Little (Zhaila Farmer), who roams her subterranean surroundings with unfettered curiosity. Her parents are hopeless junkies resigned to a daily struggle,...
