On the morning of July 18, 2014, Dan Markel, a well-loved law professor at Florida State University and a father of two young children, returned home and was confronted by an unidentified attacker who shot him twice in the head at close range. The crime scene did not yield immediate clues about the perpetrators, except for one lead – a vague description from a neighbor who witnessed a speeding Prius leaving Dan’s driveway. Detectives faced a challenging investigation, but with the assistance of the FBI and a series of interviews, they were able to reconstruct the Prius’s movements by analyzing surveillance footage and toll booth records. This ultimately led to the capture of the hired hitmen responsible for Dan’s tragic death. However, a crucial question remained unanswered: Who had orchestrated this murder-for-hire plot?
In a comprehensive report by Matt Gutman, ABC News’ chief national affairs correspondent, “20/20” delves into the details of this case.

News correspondents are trained to keep their emotions in check, but sometimes a story comes along that makes such a feat all but impossible.
Anderson Cooper, Richard Engel, Holly Wiliams, Trey Yingst, Matt Gutman and Clarissa Ward have been seen on camera in recent days trying to report on a horrific event that is emotionally draining: the invasion of Israel by Hamas militants, replete with violence, hostage-taking and explosive force.
“I’ve seen many challenging things so far,” says Yingst, the Fox News correspondent who is based in Israel and has been reporting on the attack since October 7, when he held forth from his own balcony. He responded to questions via email. “We arrived in the south as Palestinian militants were still killing and kidnapping Israelis. President Joe Biden said today that the Hamas attack on Israel was “an act of sheer evil,” sternly describing horrific reports of the terrorists’ brutality in targeting Jewish men, women, children and babies.
In remarks carrried across cable and broadcast networks Monday, Biden cited “stomach turning reports of babies being killed, entire families slain. Young people massacred while attending a music festival to celebrate peace. Women raped, assaulted, paraded as trophies.”
Coming off a telephone call with Israeli Pm Benjamin Netanyahu earlier today, a stern Biden also said that the “blood thirstiness brings to mind the worst rampages of Isis. This is terrorism.”
“We must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel. We stand with Israel. We will make sure it has what it needs to take care of its citizens, to defend itself, to respond to this attack,” he said. He said that Israel “has a right to respond,...

ABC News Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman kicked off the talk show with live reporting from Sderot, Israel, getting the hosts and viewers up to speed on the current state of things, specifically the next steps for Israel’s military. But, as he explained everything, he was interrupted.
“The amount of anger in Israel is monumental,” Gutman explained. “People want Hamas destroyed, both militarily and politically, and I think it would be very difficult for Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to launch some sort of significant incursion at this point — sorry, there’s some soldiers calling out.”

Portions of the speech were carried on major cable news networks, with translation. CNN featured a split screen of Netanyahu and network correspondent Hadas Gold translating for viewers.

Though the SAG-AFTRA strike is still in effect, late night will return starting on Friday with a new episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.” It’s a timeline that puts late night in an odd position: Which guests can appear on late night when the actors’ strike is still in progress?
Luckily, we have an answer to that question thanks to daytime television and SAG-AFTRA’s own rules.
Why can late night return during the SAG-AFTRA strike?
The state of late night is a little bit confusing, because several hosts have also done acting work and are part of SAG-AFTRA. For example, Jimmy Fallon starred in “Fever Pitch” and John Oliver starred in “Community,” as well as the live-action “Lion King.”
Because late-night shows fall under the Network Television Code, these striking performers can return to their jobs. Late night is officially part of what’s called...

The movie "Thirteen Lives" is about a group of 12 boys and their soccer coach who find themselves trapped deep in a network of caves after flooding blocks their way out. The group is eventually rescued by a team of divers who undertake the dangerous journey to find and rescue them.
The film's plot is based on a real event that happened not too long ago. On June 23, 2018, 12 boys between the ages of 11 and 16 and their assistant coach, Ekapol Chanthawong, went missing while exploring Tham Luang Nang Non, a complex of caves stretching between Thailand and Myanmar. They planned to celebrate a player's birthday in the caves, which they often explored, but the team found themselves stranded instead when a torrential rainstorm led to a flood that blocked their exit.

A Texas public safety official faced a barrage of questions over the timeline of police response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 children and two teachers dead.
Victor Escalon, South Texas regional director for the Department of Public Safety, told reporters that they are still trying to determine why it took an hour for tactical teams to arrive at the scene and back up local police who initially arrived at the school and were met by gunfire from the shooter.
Escalon also said that a school resource officer did not confront the shooter outside the building, despite previous reports, and that he entered the school through an unlocked door. The gunman “was not confronted by anybody,” he said.
Escalon said that at about 11:28 Am on Tuesday, the shooter, having just shot his grandmother in the face, crashed his vehicle and then jumped out of the passenger side of his truck.

ABC News has suspended chief national correspondent Matt Gutman over a false statement he made on-air Sunday following the death of Kobe Bryant.
Gutman had erroneously reported that all four of Bryant’s daughters were on board the helicopter that crashed into the hills of Calabasas. Bryant and his 13 year-old daughter Gianna were among nine people killed in the accident. Bryant’s other three children were not on board the aircraft.

Interest in the miraculous rescue of 12 boys from a flooded network of caves in Thailand remains fervent enough to fuel a second “20/20” broadcast about the event on ABC.
On Friday, July 27, the newsmagazine will focus on a report from Matt Gutman, the news unit’s chief national correspondent, as he interviews two British divers who were part of the team that helped bring the boys, part of a youth soccer team, to safety. The broadcast will start at 10 p.m. eastern.
One diver, Jason Mallinson, tells the reporter that one of the boys began to wake up while in neck-deep water and had to be re-injected with ketamine. Another, Chris Jewell describes the moment he got lost after losing hold of the guideline while leading one boy out of the cave. Gutman also interviews Major Charles Hodges and Master Sergeant Derek Anderson, two members of the U.S. military who...

Life is understandably scary now for Sherri Papini, the California mom who in early November, mysteriously vanished for 22 days after she left her home for a routine jog before appearing Thanksgiving morning on the side of a road chained, beaten and branded.
“When lights are off, when doors shut, when she hears certain sounds, I mean it’s something that I don’t know how to deal with, and we’ll need somebody who can help her through that from a professional standpoint,” her husband, Keith, said in an interview with 20/20‘s Matt Gutman that aired Friday night.

Keith Papini remembers the first words he exchanged with his wife Sherri, the California mom who mysteriously vanished for three weeks before being found along a rural road on Thanksgiving Day.
When he got the call from a California Highway Patrol officer, he said in an interview with 20/20‘s Matt Gutman, “It was my wife screaming in the background, yelling my name.”
He added that he remembered thinking, “I already know it’s her. I can tell her voice.”

The husband of Sherri Papini, the California mom who mysteriously vanished earlier this month, is recounting his wife’s kidnapping in his first on-air interview since her discovery.
In an exclusive sit-down with 20/20, Keith Papini describes Sherri’s 22-day captivity including the moment she was thrust from a moving vehicle on Thanksgiving, the day she was discovered.
“She was bound, she had a chain around her waist, that is correct, she had a bag over her head, that is correct,” Keith told ABC News’ Matt Gutman.
“Her left hand was in the vehicle chained to something, she was chained anytime she was in a vehicle.

It's sweeps time, and Stephen Colbert is pulling out all the stops, even making nice with his longtime nemesis: bears. On Monday night's Colbert Report, the host poked fun at sweeps-specific attempts to boost ratings, including, as Colbert put it, "cheap publicity stunts" like "rectal exams" and "lesbian kisses." See more Stephen Colbert's Career in Pictures Yet “when it comes to blowing it out for ratings, no one blows harder than Good Morning America," said Colbert, deconstructing its newly established "Survival Week" with segments like correspondent Matt Gutman narrating a wrestling session with a grizzly bear: "That is news you

ABC News says it has reopened a bureau in Beirut, Lebanon. Alexander Marquardt, who covers the region for the network, will be based there. The Beirut bureau is in addition to ABC’s bureau in Jerusalem. Peter Jennings opened ABC’s first Beirut bureau 45 years ago; ABC News closed the bureau in the early 1990s. With the Obama administration weighing a response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons, ABC News said its London-based Chief Foreign Correspondent Terry Moran will report from Beirut for all broadcasts and platforms beginning today. This marks Moran’s first assignment since moving overseas. Meanwhile, ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz, who anchored the news division’s Sunday Beltway show This Week from Cairo last Sunday, continues to report from the region along with Muhammad Lila, ABC News explained, and Matt Gutman will be reporting from the northern Israeli city of Haifa. “Beirut...

Lindsay Lohan may not understand why east coasters have their knickers in a twist over Frankenstorm Snowicane Rainmageddon Sandy — but today’s morning shows weren’t messing around when it came to Sandy coverage. Today, Good Morning America, and CBS This Morning each devoted themselves entirely to keeping an eye on the storm. Pity the nation’s soaked news correspondents.
Gma had a little fun with the news, branding today’s show as a special edition called “Gma Halloween Superstorm.” But the coverage itself — on the storm’s path, its progression, and how its advent will affect the presidential election — was pretty straightforward.
