Bianca (Mae Whitman) is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as The Duff (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends. Now, despite the words of caution from her favourite teacher (Ken Jeong), she enlists the slick but charming Wesley (Robbie Amell), to help take back her ‘label’ and overthrow the school’s resident mean girl Madison (Bella Thorne) reminding everyone that no matter what people look or act like, we are all someone’s Duff.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If there’s one genre I have a soft spot for, even as a thirty-odd year old man, it’s the teen movie.

In the seven years since his breakout role in "Knocked Up," Ken Jeong has played a string of extremes. His role on "Community" as the insane and diabolical Ben Chang has been unpredictable, but his turns in the "Hangover" series and "Role Models" (as the King of Laire, or Live Action Interactive Role-playing Explorers) have been just as funny and unsettling. That's why it's downright intriguing to watch him play a sensitive English teacher in "The Duff," a high school comedy starring Mae Whitman as a girl dubbed The Designated Ugly Fat Friend, a buffer for her hottie pals. We caught up with Jeong to discuss "The Duff," which was just released on Blu-Ray and DVD, and how he relished the chance to play a character who isn't threatening community college students for a living. When you first heard about the "The Duff" and inevitably learned that the title meant "Designated Ugly Fat Friend,...

The Duff
Written by Josh A. Cagan (based on a novel by Kody Keplinger)
Directed by Ari Sandel
USA, 2015
The Duff takes the geek-gets-a-makeover high school formula and tweaks it mostly muddled results. A few naturalistic romance scenes and the efforts of its very able leads, buoy this into watchable territory. However overall this is a film plagued by confusion and several nonsensical plot twists.
Bianca (Parenthood’s Mae Whitman) lacks style and popularity, but living in the orbit of her two popular best friends, fashionista Jess (Skyler Samuels) and athlete Casey (Bianca Santos), she barely notices. The film opens with a Breakfast-Club-esque voiceover from Bianca about how high school used to be broken down into the jock, the nerd, the criminal, the princess, and the basket case, but now that it’s the 21st century, geeks rule the world, jocks play video games, and most of the old social stratifications no longer exist.

CBS Films’ “The Duff” is set to shatter teen movie cliches, but John Hughes‘ seminal 1980s classics still remain a great source of inspiration for those behind the film. “I think the idea of the anti-hero, the underdog, it being their story is really appealing and cool,” the film’s star Mae Whitman told TheWrap during an interview alongside co-star Robbie Amell and the author of the novel on which the film is based, Kody Keplinger. “I think we also wanted to bring in some of the John Hughes elements, some of the ‘Pretty in Pink.'” Also Read: TheWrap’s 25 Most Anticipated Movies of.

Mae Whitman is one of those enormously talented young actors that has been waiting in the wings for a lead role for some time. The 26-year-old already has 119 IMDb credits to her name, breaking out in the mid-1990s with small turns as George Clooney and Bill Pullman’s daughter in One Fine Day and Independence Day, respectively. She has chops for both comedy and drama, and is able to squeeze out droll laughs as the nondescript Ann Veal on Arrested Development and then break your heart as the insecure Mary Elizabeth in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Whitman has such tremendous ability on the screen that it is a pity her first major leap above the marquee is in such a mediocre film. The Duff, based on Kody Keplinger’s novel, is a silly, clichéd and rarely convincing high-school comedy – perhaps because Whitman is too fresh and beautiful...

This emo teen movie has a refreshingly believable heroine in Designated Ugly Fat Friend Bianca, remarkably played by Mae Whitman
The Duff opens with a light jab at The Breakfast Club and concludes with a moment straight out of Pretty in Pink. It’s extremely ambitious, at least as far as emo high school movies are concerned. While its opening is too reliant on a Clarissa Explains It All-like voiceover, and some heavy-handed anti-bullying messaging feels shoehorned, there are stretches in which The Duff soars, nailing scene after funny scene with an honest spirit rarely seen in mainstream teen films. Its lead character, Bianca Piper, is a special breed of dork who is not completely socially inept. She’s one who weathers high school’s dramas with the added burden of self-awareness. It’s a character you really don’t see much in the movies, which is even stranger,...

Mean girls, crude guys, goofy teachers: The Duff unfolds in the familiar terrain of High School According to the Movies, bringing its particular lessons in survival to age-old quandaries about popularity, identity and what to wear to homecoming. More a middle-of-the-road rom-com than a teen-spirit sendup, the pic weaves its lighthearted mix of silly and serious with increasingly heavy-handed spiels on self-esteem. Working from the young-adult novel by Kody Keplinger (herself a teen when she wrote it), screenwriter Josh A. Cagen finds a middle ground between Ya sermonizing and mild cheekiness,

You gotta give it up for Mae Whitman. In an industry where actresses in particular are held to an insane amount of scrutiny about their looks, she broke out by playing "unattractive," thanks to her turn as bland, unmemorable Ann Veal (her?) on "Arrested Development." But let's face it, while she's not "starlet pretty," she's not repulsive to the point where she makes everyone around her look better. But you'll have to buy that premise hook, line and sinker if anything in the trailer for "The Duff" makes sense. Based on the novel by Kody Keplinger and directed by Ari Sandel, the movie centers on Bianca, who finds out to her dismay that she's the Duff of her group —the "designated ugly fat friend." So in an effort to go from zero socially to zero waistline (or something), she enlists the help of hunky prime beef Wesley to give her...

The onslaught of adaptations of Young Adult fiction continues with The D.U.F.F – an upcoming movie from CBS Films, which has just added award-winning Allison Janney to its cast. Based on the debut novel of author Kody Keplinger, the film has Academy Award winner Ari Sandel (Aim High) on board to direct, from a screenplay penned by Josh A. Cagan (Undergrads).
With Mae Whitman (Arrested Development) in the lead role, the story sees a high school senior devastated as her happy world is shaken by the realization that her fellow students routinely refer to her as The D.U.F.F (Designated Ugly Fat Friend to pretty students). Incensed, she drafts in the help of a male friend (Robbie Amell from The Tomorrow People) to aid in her personal reinvention, as she moves to undermine the school’s ruthless label maker (Bella Thorne from Blended).

I'm not ashamed to admit that I have read and loved books, particularly young-adult books, about vampires, witches, werewolves, fairies, angels, demons and zombies. Those genre books aren't usually what I'm drawn to, but a compelling story is a compelling story, just like a good movie is a good movie -- regardless of genre. Unfortunately, Hollywood keeps focusing so much of its attention on genre young adult franchises (especially those that don't end up delivering at the box office) that the wonderful realistic novels that are being adapted keep falling under the radar. I hope that's about to change this weekend with the release of "The Fault in Our Stars."
The adaptation of John Green's heart-wrenching love story about two teens with cancer has a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it looks like a lock for a No. 1 opening weekend. Other page-to-screen translations of realistic coming-of-age fiction have also...

Cagan, The D.U.F.F. focuses on a high school senior who has her world rocked when she learns that she has been labelled the Designated Ugly Fat Friend, the one who never quite matches up to her prettier, more popular pals.In a drive to combat this obnoxious stereotype, she kicks off an attempt and re-invention, and leads her fellow D.U.F.F.s in a campaign to challenge the school’s chilly evil queen. Evil in this case being the smug, self-satisfied leader of the popular set, not an...

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

For the seventh annual year a list of the top unproduced screenplays written in the past 12 calendar months has been made. The Black List is the most recognized and celebritized compilation for screenwriters and unknown movie ideas to be heard. While some prior Black List scripts have gone on to be made (like Juno or 500 Days of Summer), most scripts do not. However, what being on The Black List can do is to give a big push of credibility to a screenwriter hoping to carve out a career in Hollywood.
The Black List recepients are chosen by a committee of 300 individuals working in Hollywood: agents, writers, producers, managers and the like. They read the screenplays that float around the showbiz ecosystem; some are bought and are already in development while others are still seeing the interest of talent of financial backers.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

This year at the Austin Film Festival, studio executive and “Black List” founder Franklin Leonard introduced the opening film, Butter. It’s a fantastic satirical comedy written by Jason Micallef and Leonard’s post-screening Q&A with him was equally hilarious and unconventional.
Sitting in the upper deck at the Paramount Theatre, I was in awe at how Leonard had not only created the list just six years prior but how it provided such legitimacy to emerging screenwriters, like Micallef. He was relatively unknown in ‘08, but his script placed third on the list. Now he has a movie coming out starring Jennifer Garner, his new scripts have Jack Black and Jason Segel attached (separately), and he wrote a movie titled Good Vibrations about, um, marital aids starring Charlize Theron. That’s the power of the Black List.
Simply put, “The Black List” is a collection of the best unproduced screenplays...

Exclusive CBS Films has acquired the screen adaptation of Kody Keplinger's youth novel "The Duff" and is in negotiations with McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision to produce it, an individual close to the studio confirmed. The insider said CBS Films will likely change the film's title. In the book, a slightly awkward teen girl becomes tired of being the "Duff" -- i.e. the designated ugly fat friend -- to her...
