As has been the case in previous years, once again the short films of the London Film Festival continue to demonstrate the eclecticism of the festival programmers’ tastes. Despite being the UK’s largest film festival, the team behind this 68th edition of Lff aren’t afraid to have shorts from filmmakers of various backgrounds sitting next to each other. Watching through the programmes on offer, you’ll see student filmmakers next to established directors, horror shorts sitting alongside intimate documentaries, high budgets next to low budgets. It’s just a wonderful mix of films that are clearly put together without any sort of prejudice or preconceived assumptions. Below you’ll find a list of ten short films from the festival this year that we deemed recommendation-worthy but bear in mind the programme is very much worth your time across the board. So, once you’ve finished with this list,...

We have a while to wait before we get to see new episodes of House of the Dragon, HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, but the cast members are keeping busy in the meantime. At the moment, Emma D'Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) is starring in a Greek myth-inspired drama called The Other Place at the National Theatre in London. D'Arcy is incredibly compelling onscreen and I can easily imagine them commanding the stage as well.
That said, the National Theater is an ocean away from where I live, so I doubt I'll be taking it in. But D'Arcy's House of the Dragon castmates live much closer. In a video on X, we can see House of the Dragon stars Harry Collett (who plays Rhaenyra's son Jace) and Ewan Mitchell (who plays her younger half-brother Aemond) showing up to watch their colleague work:

In the wake of Alien: Romulus comes the Hulu series “Alien: Earth” next year, which is set before the events of all previous movies and brings the franchise to Earth for the first time.
If it’s taking place on Earth… before the original Alien… does that mean “Alien: Earth” won’t actually feature any Xenomorphs at all? That’s been the speculation/worry from many fans these past several months, but creator Noah Hawley (“Legion”) is here to debunk the rumors.
Chatting with Deadline on the Emmys red carpet last night, Noah Hawley has made it crystal clear that were will be at least one Xenomorph featured in next year’s “Alien: Earth.”
He explains, “There’s something about seeing a Xenomorph in the wilds of Earth with your own eyes that is truly chilling… to think of it moving here among us. And so I can’t tell...

Thanks to the recent success of Alien: Romulus, the Alien franchise is undergoing a huge resurgence right now, and Fargo creator Noah Hawley thinks his upcoming TV version Alien: Earth can more than live up with the immense legacy of the movies that have preceded it.
Alien: Earth is set three decades before the events of the original 1979 movie. Developed by Noah Hawley, it has an all-star cast including Timothy Olyphant, Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, and Essie Davis. Plot details are currently scarce, but FX recently released a teaser for the show. It doesn't show much, naturally, although we get a glimpse of a Xenomorph. Plus, the network confirms a 2025 release. Check it out:
Speaking to Variety at the Emmys, Hawley teased his Alien series. “It delivers everything that a great ‘Alien’ movie delivers, and then there’s a whole other world to it,” he said. "Of course, those movies are survival stories,...

Although a teaser promo for the series was recently released, we still know very little about Alien: Earth beyond a brief logline (see below), but creator Noah Hawley has now shared some intriguing new details about what will undoubtedly be the most important aspect of the project for many fans: the Xenomprphs!
Though the show is set in the (seemingly) safe confines of Earth before the events of Ridley Scott's original, the titular acid-secreting creatures will still feature - but they might differ somewhat to the Xenos we're used to seeing on the big screen.
While speaking to Deadline on the red carped of last night's Emmy Awards, Hawley teased a "chilling" new take on the Alien.

The Alien franchise is set to continue on the small screen with an “FX on Hulu” TV series called Alien: Earth, from Fargo creator Noah Hawley. The show began filming in Thailand last year, then had to halt production after a month due to the actors strike. Filming resumed earlier this year and wrapped a couple of months ago – and while speaking to Deadline while on the Emmys red carpet, Hawley promised that the show will have Xenomorph moments that are so scary, it will make viewers lock their doors.
One of the first things we heard about the Alien TV series – and one of the most surprising things about it – is that it will be set on Earth (thus the title), a couple of decades before the events of the first movie. FX chairman John Landgraf has said the show will take place “right near the end of this century.

FX has released the very first teaser trailer for their upcoming TV show Alien: Earth and it stars everyone’s favourite perfect organism. Take a look below.
Trailers have changed enormously since I was a kid or even a teenager. There were no such things as teaser trailers and I also don’t remember trailers being so bloomin’ long as they are today.
That being said, the new teaser trailer for Alien: Earth is pretty good for a teaser trailer. We won’t say any more on it, we’ll just let you take a look below.
Lasting only 15 seconds – arguably the perfect length for a ‘teaser’ – the trailer gives us a look at Earth as reflected on the surface of the Xenomorphs head. It’s brief, it’s simple, but as it’s coming hot on the heels of Alien: Romulus, the excitement is there.

"The perfect planet for the perfect organism." FX on Hulu has revealed a first teaser for the upcoming sci-fi spin-off series called Alien: Earth. This is sort of connected to Alien: Romulus, but not really, because it's another prequel series set on Earth involving Weyland-Yutani but not related to the storylines from any of the movies. Set for a release sometime in 2025 - but with Alien: Romulus rocking theaters right now they're dropping this. When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet’s greatest threat in FX's highly anticipated TV series Alien: Earth. Back in July, we brought you the news that filming had wrapped on Noah Hawley's Alien prequel series Alien: Earth. Now, after select fans were lucky enough to catch a glimpse at what the Fargo creator's been cooking up with his take on the legendary sci-fi franchise at Alien: Romulus screenings stateside, FX have dropped a sneak peek — and we mean peek — at the show alongside a new plot synopsis. Check out the teaser below:
Xenomorph? Check. Acid saliva? Check. Reflection of the Earth in the perfect organism's somewhat chromed dome? Well, that's certainly new territory for the franchise whose tagline is "In space no one can hear you scream." We've known for some time that Hawley's series is an Earth-set prequel, but even so, there's something about a visual of the xeno heading for terra firma that's very creepy. And here's the no-less-ominous official logline for the show:...

After four years of talking about it, the long-awaited "Alien" TV show is finally, really happening. Hailing from Noah Hawley of "Fargo" fame, the series set within the iconic sci-fi/horror franchise was first announced in December 2020 as part of Disney's now-infamous investor day presentation. A ton of projects were announced, many of which never came to pass. Hawley got this one across the finish line, though, and now it's coming to Hulu in 2025. Get ready for "Alien: Earth," ladies and gentleman! So, what is the show about? We finally know.
FX and Hulu released the above, brief teaser, which doesn't give us too much to go on, admittedly. We get a quick shot of a Xenomorph with Earth reflected on its head. That makes it crystal clear what the big hook of this one is: the Xenomorphs are coming to Earth. This will be a first for the franchise,...

Noah Hawley’s FX series Alien: Earth has revealed the show’s logline and went wide with a teaser trailer (above) that previously screened for a limited group of lucky moviegoers who watched Alien: Romulus.
The quick clip shows an angry and feral Xenomorph with dark sharp teeth and lips dripping with drool. But is that actually drool or could it be blood? You’ll find out in 2025 when the series premieres only on Hulu. At least one thing is for sure, Xeno is hangry.

The majority of people are unaware that the initial story for the Alien franchise was written by the late writer Dan O’Bannon and his colleague Ronald Shusett. With his Alien film, Ridley Scott popularized the franchise, and the rest is history, as the Alien franchise became a pillar of modern science-fiction and one of the most popular franchises of all time.
Since the first film, it has expanded its fictional world and explored the beginnings of its own universe, although the most recent entry, the horror Alien: Romulus, which is set between Alien and Aliens and returns to the current timeline of the universe, provided us with something different. The movie is currently airing in theaters around the world and is a major hit.
But, aside from expanding the franchise further, Alien: Romulus also gave us a glimpse at the upcoming Alien: Earth series, which is scheduled for a 2025 release.

Previously and very briefly known as Alien: Neverland, Noah Hawley’s Alien TV show is now called Alien: Earth.
After reports that Noah Hawley’s Alien TV show was to be called Alien: Neverland, it now seems that Hawley and FX have gone in a different direction, calling the upcoming series Alien: Earth instead.
The Alien: Neverland title floated around in June, but Hawley confirmed the title in an interview with Variety after producer John Landgraf revealed the title in a separate interview.
Speaking to Variety after the Emmy nominations, Hawley confirmed that production on Alien: Earth had now been completed and the grind to finish the visual effects is now beginning.
“It’s a very big show. It’s nice to have some time with it,” Hawley said. “The first year of anything, you want to feel like you’re not up against the wall in terms of time.

Get ready fans, the Alien franchise is getting super scary and super cool! Noah Hawley, the director known for Fargo, is working on a new Alien TV show for FX called Alien: Earth. It takes place about 30 years before the first movie and brings the nasty aliens called Xenomorphs to our planet.
They just finished filming and it sounds awesome. Hawley said in an interview that they “just wrapped production” which means they’re done shooting all the episodes. Now comes the fun part where they add all the crazy alien effects. Hawley was really excited to start working on that part too.
The show is all about the scary company called Weyland-Yutani that’s always trying to capture aliens. There’s a main character named Wendy who is part human and part robot. She gets mixed up with Weyland-Yutani’s plans to study aliens and create new lifeforms. Sounds like trouble!

FX’s upcoming “Alien” series has a new title, according to network boss John Langraf and showrunner Noah Hawley: “Alien: Earth.”
“We just wrapped production, so now I’m into the long post that gets into visual effects,” Hawley told Variety while discussing the Emmy nominations earned by “Fargo,” his other FX series.
“It’s a very big show. It’s nice to have some time with it,” he continued. “The first year of anything, you want to feel like you’re not up against the wall in terms of time. I’ve seen four of the eight hours of director cuts and engaged in the process of figuring out, cinematically, what it wants to be. It’s one of my favorite parts of of making a show.”

FX chairman John Landgraf is having a very good day, with the programmer scoring 93 nominations at the 76th Emmy Awards. He spoke with Variety about FX’s good fortune and dropped a few details about some upcoming shows, including the possible title of Noah Hawley’s Alien TV series.
“Noah is deep in work on Season 1 of ‘Alien: Earth’ right now,” Landgraf said. “We’re in post-production, and we are talking to him and watching cuts every week.“
Landgraf continued, saying he’s very optimistic about the series and hopes Hawley will write at least two seasons before returning to Fargo season 6: “We’re pretty bullish on ‘Alien: Earth’ and we’ve told him that assuming, as we hope, ‘Alien: Earth’ is a returning television series, we want him to focus on on at least writing two seasons of it before returning to a possible sixth season of ‘Fargo....

FX’s long-gestating Alien series has finished principal filming, creator Noah Hawley says.
“We are wrapped — just wrapped,” Hawley told The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday, the same day his other FX series, Fargo, earned 15 Emmy nominations. “I’m in post, editing away, and obviously there’s a large visual effects component that takes time. But I couldn’t be happier with the show we shot.
“If people wanted a television series based on the world of Alien, I think I’m gonna give them something special.”
The series, whose full title will be Alien: Earth, was early into its production cycle in Thailand when the 2023 actors strike shut down the set (scripts had all been written before writers struck in May). Filming resumed after management agreed to new contracts with the two unions; the series is slated to premiere sometime next year.

The Alien franchise is set to continue on the small screen with an “FX on Hulu” TV series from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, a show that began filming in Thailand last year, then had to halt production after a month due to the actors strike. Filming resumed earlier this year… and it looks like it’s wrapping up this month (as scheduled), because Sydney Chandler – whose previous credits include Don’t Worry Darling and the mini-series Pistol, and who was announced to be the lead of the Alien TV series when she was cast back in May of 2023 – has taken to social media to reveal that her time in Thailand has come to an end.
Chandler wrote, “Farewell Bangkok. Benchakitti. Lumphini. Krabi. Pathum Wan. China Town. The Onsen. And good Ole Kinokuniya … Farewell 4am pickups. Bkk Traffic. Walkie-Talkie static. Late night motorbikes. Manic laughter. And pure creative adrenaline … Farewell River Kwai.

The Alien franchise makes its long-awaited return to theaters this August with Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus, but we will soon get to see the Xenomorph (Xenomorphs?) terrorize the small screen for the very first time in Noah Hawley's FX series.
Updates on the project have been few and far between since the main cast was announced last year, but thanks to a new rumor doing the rounds online, we may have a little more to go on.
Though he stresses that this may not be the final title, insider Daniel Richtman has heard that the show is currently being referred to as "Alien: Neverland."
The series is believed to be set three decades before the events of Ridley Scott's 1979 classic and a few years before Prometheus, and will find the characters "caught in a conflict with the beginning of artificial intelligence and the competition among developers and users.

We’ve waited a long time for showrunner Noah Hawley’s Alien TV show to materialise, and given that it isn’t due to arrive next year, we’ve still a way to go.

Filming resumed earlier this year, and continues to this day, although Hawley has already finished the episodes he directed himself. Hawley said, “They’re saying maybe don’t do two things at once on this show… their hope is to put a season two as close to season one as possible.” As for how involved executive producer Ridley Scott is with the series – it turns out, he’s not very involved at all.

When the first season of Andor hit Disney+ in 2022, it was clear that there’d never been a Star Wars story like it before – a gritty, grounded, morally and politically complex espionage thriller that just happened to be set in the galaxy far, far away. The show, headed up by Tony Gilroy, dug its fingers into the true ideologies of the Empire; the experiences of the galaxy’s oppressed people; the cost involved for those orchestrating the fight back. And among it all came some of the most nail-biting setpieces in the entire saga, from the Ferrix uprising, to the Narkina 5 prison break – and, of course, the pulse-pounding Aldhani raid. In a brand new featurette from the upcoming 4K steelbook release of the series, Diego Luna looks back on the making of the Aldhani arc. Give it a watch here:

There’s a lot going on in the world of Alien at the moment. The original classic is returning to theaters, for starters, and the Xenomorphs will be fighting Marvel’s superheroes in the upcoming mashup comic Aliens vs. Avengers. Of course, the main event for 2024 is Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, a brand new big screen movie set between Alien and Aliens!
With so much going on, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that Disney is also working on an “Alien” television series, in the works for FX from creator Noah Hawley (“Legion”).

If Greg Davies was running TV, new comedy shows would get a two-season order.
The comedian and writer, who fronts fronts the hit series Taskmaster in the UK and writes and stars in sitcom The Cleaner for the BBC, was asked what he would change about the business during a the closing session of the Berlinale Series Market, and responded he would like to see new comedies given more time to hit their stride, adding that all-time classics such as Seinfeld needed multiple seasons to establish themselves.
“I think that people should commission things for at least two seasons,” he said during the panel, which was about the international world of TV comedy.
Davies’ notes were delivered with a characteristic dose of humor, but his point about giving comedy time to grow struck a chord. An industry audience gave his call for double-season orders for comedy a spontaneous round of applause.

Fargo and Alien are not necessarily two projects that you’d associate with each other but they both come from the mind of Noah Hawley and are for FX.

Following in the footsteps of Aardman Animations legends Peter Lord, David Sproxton and Nick Park, a new wave of creators are driving the company forward. While its celebrated franchises, such as Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Chicken Run are still much loved, and it has four Oscars wins with nine further nominations under its belt, Aardman is also focused on nurturing new talent, such as the creators of Oscar nominated short film “Robin Robin,” and series, such as “Lloyd of the Flies” and “The Very Small Creatures.”
Speaking to Variety from Aardman’s headquarters on Spike Island, Bristol, in the West of England, two of the creative minds behind “Lloyd of the Flies,” Aardman’s first CGI series, explain how the show evolved. In other articles, Variety speaks to Dan Ojari and Mikey Please, the creators of “Robin Robin,” and Lucy Izzard, the creator of “The Very Small Creatures.

Alien TV series is meant to run for multiple seasons, but Noah Hawley knows where the story is going
The Alien franchise is set to continue on the small screen with an “FX on Hulu” TV series from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, a show that began filming last year, then had to halt production after a month due to the actors strike. Production is set to resume any day now – and during an interview with Collider, Hawley confirmed that while the series is intended to be a recurring show that will last for more than one season, he also knows where the story is going. He’s just not sure yet how many seasons it will take to get there.
Hawley said, “I think that endings are what gives a story meaning, and so you should never start a story without some sense of where it’s going because then you can really build that meaning into it. With Legion, I had what felt like a three-act structure to...

“What happens when Weyland is not around to program you anymore?” archeologist Elizabeth Shaw asks the android David.
“I suppose I’ll be free,” answers David.
“You want that?”
The question gives the android pause. “Want? Not a concept I’m familiar with,” he answers. “That being said, doesn’t everyone want their parents dead?”
Conversations such as this one between Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender) recur throughout Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott and written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. For his first movie in the franchise since the original Alien, Scott had little interest in more xenomorphs or any of the deep-space thrills of his previous installment. Instead, Prometheus explored the relationship between God and humanity, using metaphors of the created fighting the creators or children killing parents.

Decades after making the sci-fi horror classic Alien, director Ridley Scott returned to the Alien franchise with the intention of making a series of prequels that would tell us all about the “Space Jockey” and the creation of the xenomorph. The mythology Scott presented in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant didn’t sit well with a lot of fans – and when Alien: Covenant underwhelmed and underperformed, his prequel series came to an early end. Now the franchise is set to continue with a new film directed by Fede Alvarez and an “FX on Hulu” TV series from Fargo creator Noah Hawley… and during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hawley confirmed that he’s one of the fans who wasn’t very impressed by the story told in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. So don’t expect to see nods to the mythology or technology of those films in the TV show.

Creator Noah Hawley‘s take on the Alien franchise has been described as both an “extension and reinvention” of the films, but don’t expect Ridley Scott’s prequel movies to factor into the series. Scott, who’s on board the FX series as producer, dug into the origins of the Xenomorphs in both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but Hawley reveals in a new chat with Kcrw’s The Business that he’s not interested in playing with any of those story threads.
Furthermore, he’s only interested in exploring the tech of the original two movies.
“Ridley and I have talked about this — and many, many elements of the show,” Hawley explains. “For me, and for a lot of people,...

Fargo TV show creator Noah Hawley on why his Alien TV show will borrow more from 1979’s Alien than its prequel, 2012’s Prometheus.
Like us, you’re probably excited by the prospect of a Fede Alvarez Alien film coming out this year. Also like us, you’re probably excited by the prospect of a Noah Hawley Alien TV series coming out some time next year.
Both projects are being led by creators who seem perfectly suited to tell new stories in the Alien universe and it’s a blessing to have two hugely promising projects on the horizon.
As far as Noah Hawley’s TV series goes, the Fargo creator has opened up a little bit about the influences that will form the foundation for his series.
Given that we’ve got an established mainline Alien film series and two prequel films courtesy of Ridley Scott (2012’s Prometheus and 2017’s...

“Fargo” showrunner Noah Hawley teased his new FX series “Alien” in a recent interview with Kcrw’s The Business.
Though plot details are being kept under wraps, Hawley’s “Alien” series is set on Earth and roughly 70 years in future, predating the original film series.
Hawley was asked whether or not he would incorporate the backstory in Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” (2012) and “Alien: Covenant” (2017) into his FX series. The prequel films included a controversial backstory where the aliens were manufactured as a bioweapon by a mysterious race known as the Engineers.
“Ridley and I have talked about this — and many, many elements of the show,” Hawley said. “For me, and for a lot of people, this ‘perfect life form’ — as it was described in the first film — is the product of millions of years of evolution that created this creature that may have existed for a million years out there in space.

Emmy winner Noah Hawley is teasing his highly anticipated FX Alien prequel series.
The Fargo showrunner was recently interviewed by Kcrw’s The Business, hosted by Hollywood Reporter Editor-At-Large Kim Masters.
Hawley was asked by interviewer Eric Deggans about Alien, which is set on Earth about 70 years into the future, predating the feature film franchise.
Right out of the gate, Hawley showed his understanding of the franchise by giving a rather perfect description of what Alien is really about: “The thing with Alien is that it’s not just a great monster movie. It’s the story of humanity trapped between its primordial parasitic past and its AI future, and they’re both trying to kill us. So, there’s nowhere to go. It’s really a story of does humanity deserve to survive? Does humanity’s arrogance in thinking that we’re no longer food and its arrogance in...
