After months of promoting the final season of S.W.A.T., CBS reversed course Thursday afternoon with the following announcement:

S.W.A.T. has been renewed for Season 8!

The news comes midway through what was previously teased as the seventh and final season.

As you’ll recall, S.W.A.T. was canceled a year ago, before the network walked it back a few days later with a renewal.

The latest twist comes as the hit Shemar Moore drama has been (carefully) wrapping up the storylines of some of the drama’s most beloved characters.

Kenny Johnson’s Luca was written out earlier this month. The character retired after revealing he wasn’t too keen on the idea of desk duty after an injury rendered him unfit to go out in the field with his team.

Who had this on their bingo cards?

We’ve been riding for so long on the cancellation of popular shows on other networks — even after they’re renewed — that this news hits us like a shower of warm rose petals.

It’s concerning that during S.W.A.T. Season 7, many beloved characters have already said their goodbyes, so either they’ll be looking to walk that back or introduce us to a new team.

S.W.A.T. is not ending after all. Beating the odds a second time, the action drama has been renewed for the 2024-25 season, with Shemar Moore set to continue as star and executive producer. I hear Season 8 will consist of 22 episodes.

The news comes a year after S.W.A.T. was canceled before the decision was dramatically reversed a couple of days later with a renewal for a seventh and final season. This time, the network is not boxing itself in and is leaving the door open to more by not branding 8 as the series’ final season.

The surprise renewal, which sources said came down pretty quickly over the last couple of days, also comes as S.W.A.T is wrapping production on its seventh season. Moore hinted at the drama not necessarily ending by posting set photos on his Ig story yesterday with the caption “Season 7 finale will be [fire emoji],” not referring to the episode as series finale.

Turns out reports of “S.W.A.T’s” cancellation have been greatly exaggerated. CBS has renewed the cop drama for Season 8 despite announcing its seventh season would be its last nearly a year ago.

The latest drama marks the second time “S.W.A.T” has technically escaped cancellation, with CBS initially axing the show before announcing it would return for one last run. The original decision to cancel “S.W.A.T” came down to licensing fees. After Sony and CBS were unable to come to terms in 2023, the show was canceled, but they eventually worked out the deal for a final season with a reduced episode count.

The promos for the CBS show seemed to indicate that his character, Officer Dominique Luca, was killed in the line of duty. That tease had fans buzzing about the death of a beloved character.

Johnson, an original series regular cast member, became a recurring heading into the drama’s current seventh and final season.

Worry not, fans. Although Luca sustained multiple gunshot wounds, he did survive the onslaught.

The bad news: a doctor’s phone call several weeks later said he had irreversible nerve damage from a wound to his shoulder. That meant he couldn’t pass the physical for duty.
