Beach House put together a pretty stellar setlist for their stripped-down show at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia Monday night (December 11th), including some live debuts and a few rarities they haven’t performed in over a decade.
After a surprise opening set from Philly’s own Kurt Vile, Beach House’s Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally did an intimate gig full of songs for the real heads. They performed “Many Nights” and “The Bells” — both from 2022’s Once Twice Melody: Chapter 3 — live for the very first time, and debuted “Devil’s Pool” from last April’s Become EP.
But the real surprises were the throwback rarities, including “Childhood” from their self-titled debut, which they hadn’t played in a whopping 16 years. They also did “Auburn and Ivory,” another Beach House deep cut, for the first time since 2012. And, for the first time since 2016, they performed Devotion’s “D.A.R.L.I.N.G.” and...

Life Is Beautiful feels like Las Vegas … actual Las Vegas, not the touristy Strip about four miles south. While many festivals take place in unremarkable parking lots, dirt fields, or parks, Life Is Beautiful is baked into downtown Vegas. It may be the only large-scale festival where people actually live in houses and apartments within festival grounds.
Make no mistake about it, this is an urban festival, with all the markings of a hip downtown scene — a line of more than 30-people deep waiting to go to cocktail school at...

Beach House transformed the Late Show With Stephen Colbert stage into an indie pop dreamscape with their performance of “Superstar” Thursday. The shoegaze-inspired track comes off the group’s most recent album Once Twice Melody, which was released in February of this year.

Long-running indie duo Beach House — who released the sprawling 18-song double album, ‘Once Twice Melody,’ just a few weeks ago — are making their film-scoring debut with Netflix’s “Along for the Ride,” which is described in the announcement as “a sweet summer film based on the popular YA book by New York Times bestselling author Sarah Dessen.” The film arrives on Netflix on Friday.
Written and directed by Sofia Alvarez (who wrote the screenplay for both “To All the Boys I’ve Love Before” and its sequel), “Along for the Ride” tells the story of Auden (Emma Pasarow), who’s decided to spend her last summer before college in picturesque Colby Beach, according to the synopsis. While other teens party in the sun, loner Auden spends her time roaming the streets after everyone else is asleep. Everything changes when she meets Eli (Belmont Cameli), a charming and mysterious fellow insomniac.

If you’re looking for music that feels like a dream, plunging the listener into an alternate world where everything gleams with a strange, gentle beauty, few artists will meet that need better than Beach House. So, naturally, when the arts collective Meow Wolf needed a soundtrack for a trippy new exhibition in Las Vegas, the Baltimore duo was one of the first calls they made.
“It was kind of a no-brainer for us,” says Beach House guitarist/keyboardist Alex Scally. “Anything immersive fits with us. We’re interested in...

Dream-pop purveyors Beach House have unveiled new song, “Alien.” An outtake from their 7 recording sessions, it was previously available on tour only and is now being released as a limited edition B-side to 7 track “Lose Your Smile” on “slime green vinyl”.
In the song’s accompanying video directed by San Charoenchai, a kaleidoscope of black-and-white undulating patterns enhances the hypnotic vibe of “Alien.” “Sorry, sometimes, I get carried away,” Victoria Legrand gauzily sings over glistening melodies. On their two 2015 albums “Depression Cherry” and “Thank Your Lucky Stars,” Baltimore-spawned duo Beach House had crafted their strain of dreampop to such perfection that it felt like there were few stones left to unturn. The duo felt that as well — they said of this album, “We wanted to rethink old methods and shed some self-imposed limitations” — and their seventh full-length represents less a change of style than of mood. While their impressionist synth haze and Victoria Legrand’s breathy vocals remain at the forefront, “7” is darker, cloudier, crankier and more turbulent than most of what they’ve done before.
It’s almost the inverse of the transformation that most musical artists try to make, which is to graft a new musical style or element onto their usual template in an effort to seem contemporary (has anyone not heard enough trap beats on pop songs yet?). The album starts off...

Back in the very first episode of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” goofy but dedicated Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) tries to catch a criminal, but his real problem is this: His new boss, Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher), wants him to wear a necktie. It feels like a trivial problem when compared to serious police work, but Holt holds firm, establishing himself as the Establishment — “the man” against whom Jake naturally wants to revolt.
At the end of the episode, Jake realizes that Holt’s desire for him to wear a necktie isn’t a petty whim, but a desire to create unity within the squad. The dynamic between the two is seemingly established…except, as the show progresses, it isn’t. Since those early days, Captain Holt has become one of TV’s most interesting and hilarious characters, a fascinating evolution that continues with the premiere of Season 5.

Although until now they’ve only been known as fashion designers, cinema has always been part of Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s work. The siblings often use films as inspiration for their collections and have delivered runway shows dedicated to the likes of Japanese horror movie Kuroneko among others, their elaborate, stunning designs are also staples of awards season red carpets with actresses like Kirsten Dunst and Natalie Portman wearing them to festivals and ceremonies. In fact, Portman collected her first Best Actress Oscar in a purple Rodarte gown, after Kate and Laura had designed many of the costumes for Black Swan. After being so immersed in the world of cinema, it seems that making a film was the logical next step, and so they’ve done with Woodshock, a hallucinatory journey into the mind of Theresa (Dunst) a young woman battling depression after the death of her mother.

How did Kiss Me Deadly come to be restored? The real question should be, how did filmdom lose track of its original ending in the first place? Savant uncovers evidence that may explain when, and why, United Artists mutilated the finish of Robert Aldrich’s apocalyptic film noir.
(Note: The images below with text can be enlarged for reading, just click on them.)
Before home video the final home for Hollywood films was Television. Robert Aldrich’s 1955 Kiss Me Deadly never saw a theatrical reissue, and it dropped out of major TV visibility in 1962. I saw the documentation in United Artists’ legal folder on the film. To secure capital to launch more movies, Robert Aldrich sold all of his ‘Associates and Aldrich’ pictures back to UA after their original releases were concluded. More papers showed Kiss Me Deadly being included in at least two TV syndication packages, and then each time pointedly removed.

Last Week’S Review: Adam and Hannah Play Out A Fantasy As Jessa’s Nightmare Comes True
Love Her or Hate Her
This entire season has been about Hannah finding a new level of maturity knowing that a baby is on the way, but up until this episode she’s always assumed she’d have the baby and live with it in New York. With Elijah, probably, in their tiny two-bedroom apartment. But with the months closing in and no real financial options presenting themselves, Hannah had to wrestle with whether or not to accept a position “teaching the Internet” at a swanky school upstate (and work for guest star Ann Dowd!) or to stay where she was with no real options. It was obvious what she was going to do from the second she was offered the job, but it made for an interesting 24-hour period of coincidences and farewells.

While the real house used for filming is tucked into the dunes of Malibu, set decorator Amy Wells used the series’ setting, idyllic and well-to-do Monterey, California, as inspiration for the interior design. “Madeline was always going to be...

A Malibu beach house with “a lawn that stretched out to a fruit orchard bordered by a neighbor’s horse pasture” is not likely atop the list of places Beastie Boys fans would expect to find New York-bred rapper Mike D.
But that’s exactly where the Mc (born Michael Diamond), 51, has decamped to with his wife, Tamra, and teenage sons Davis and Skyler. (Before you call the No Sleep Till Brooklyn auteur a traitor to his coast, note he’s also had a series of townhouses in the borough as well as previous L.A. properties.)

When it came to decorating their New York City apartment, seven-time Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series winner Jimmie Johnson’s wife, Chandra, was in the driver’s seat.
“Jimmie’s more interested in the bones of the space and how the layout works,” Chandra tells Architectural Digest. “He’s not picking fabrics.”
His hands-off approach didn’t hold the couple back, though. The racing star and his former-model wife have crafted a space that combines the best of both impeccable design and easy living, thanks, in part, to the help of interior designer Shawn Henderson, who they’ve previously turned to for homes in Tulsa,...

Often upon discovering a two-piece musical act, my thoughts immediately drift to their connection with each other. Could this vitriolic song written by the former be about the latter? Did a relationship occur prior to this band’s success and how does it affect their music? What could possibly keep them together enough to record an album? In short, there is theatre in a duo.
A two-piece is the most curious formation of a musical act because it allows for the listener to apply an immediate narrative. Nuances of either person are held up to a much more comparative light than an act containing a greater amount of members. When the band is limited to two people, the audience can apply a dramatic interpersonal relationship between the musicians with concepts of romance, friendship, crime-fighting, or even staunch enmity.
And then the often short-lived nature of a duo makes complete sense.
