Brimming with vinegar, Comic Book Heaven owner Joe Leisner has a lot of opinions about life, comic books and where technology should have stopped. He’s the sole focus of this documentary short film from E.J. McLeavey-Fisher, and he opens the conversation sharing the true worth of comic books by explaining what farmers of the early 20th century used to do with them. The next ten minutes is an excellent bit of sand paper nostalgia. "Comic Book Heaven" is a wonderful short documentary that tells the story of an interesting character named Joe Leisner, who is the owner of a comic book store in Sunnyside, Queens, NY called Comic Book Heaven.
When I was growing up in the early 1990s, I spent a great deal of time in my local comic book shop reading comics and spending my money. I walked into that shop recently. and it just wasn't the same. So much had changed and it wasn't loaded with the amount of people that it used to be. These days you can read all of your comics and buy all your toys online. Even though comic book movies are blowing up in Hollywood and audiences are loving them, the small comic book stores are slowly dying off. This film gives us some insight on that as it was made during the lead-up to the closure of Joe's store.
