It wouldn't have been hard to slap a “The Thing Meets Gravity” or a “28 Days Later in space” strapline on the marketing campaign for The Last Days Of Mars, but it's arrived with markedly less fanfare than most mainstream horror movies released this year, pushed back from its intended release last September.
The film is a nuts-and-bolts sci-fi horror flick that played out of competition at last year's Cannes film festival, during directors' fortnight, but it's the interesting way in which it's been executed that marks it for such distinction, more than any real sort of innovation or unpredictability.

An unimaginative retread of recent science-fiction items like Sunshine and Prometheus (films that themselves are no beacons of originality), The Last Days on Mars is a movie whose greatest virtues (visual flair, production-value economy) are marred by a dull storyline that is unworthy of feature-length treatment. Screenwriter Clive Dawson, working from Sydney J. Bounds’s 1975 short story “The Animators,” fails to enliven the film’s genre-staple premise—a team of astronauts discovers something mysterious, dangerous, and seemingly beyond comprehension—with enough character detail or sci-fi creativity to sustain our attention. As a feature-length debut for director Ruairi Robinson, the movie’s not a bad...

Director: Ruairi Robinson. Writers: Sydney J. Bounds and Clive Dawson. Cast: Liev Schreiber, Romola Garai, Elias Koteas, Charles Brunel, Olivia Williams, Johnny Harris and Goran Kostic. The Last Days on Mars is a film adaptation of Sydney J. Bounds' short story "The Animators. The film was recently released in a few theatres and on video-on-demand (Oct. 31st, 2013). Starring Liev Schreiber, Elias Koteas and Olivia Williams, the film boils down to zombies in space. Flesheaters chase astronauts through much of the film's runtime. And, The Last Days on Mars is a good blend of horror and sci-fi, which makes this film mostly exciting. Though, a few surprises are lacking. At the heart of the film is an endearing relationship between two characters. But, love and life take a backseat to looming death, in this heart pounding adventure. The story begins with eight, bickering astronauts on Mars. Their six cabin feverish...

Joe Hill's comic book series Locke & Key has officially been picked up by Universal Pictures, and they plan to develop it into a feature film. News broke on this about seven months ago, but it looks like everything has fallen into place. Star Trek and Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will produce it. We previously reported that they would turn the series into a trilogy, but that isn't mentioned in this recent report.
Fox previously had plans to turn it into a TV series, and a pilot was developed, but they decided not to order a full season. The network wanted to focus on their American Horror Story series instead. Kurtzman an Orci also were producers on the TV series, so they're following the project wherever it goes.

The Lock & Key TV series that was developed by director Mark Romanek and produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will not be showing up on TV anytime soon. Fox dropped the project to focus on American Horror Story, but it's not dead yet!

Ruairi Robinson got a few headlines when, about a year ago, he debuted Blinky™, a science fiction short that featured the acting talents of Max Records (Where the Wild Things Are); past that, his career has been a little slower than some may prefer.. However, The Daily Mail (via ThePlaylist) reports that he’s wrangled a trio of players for a sci-fi feature, The Last Days on Mars, which will begin shooting in July.
Liev Schreiber, Sally Hawkins, and Romola Garai (One Day, Atonement) will be leading the film, written by Clive Dawson and based on a short story by Sydney J. Bounds. It follows eight astronauts on a Mars space station who encounter danger when they discover an unknown, dangerous bacteria; BleedingCool, having read the script, described it as something of a horror film, what with “a lot of business with airlocks that could be outstandingly tense if deftly handled.

Is there a curse of sci-fi movies set on Mars? We don't believe that, but there's plenty of evidence to support that theory, with virtually every film set on our nearest planetary neighbor -- from "Mission To Mars" to "Red Planet" from "Ghosts Of Mars" and "Mars Needs Moms" to "John Carter" -- all disappointing critically, commercially or both. But director Ruairi Robinson ain't afraid of no curse.
The Irish filmmaker made his name with the Oscar-nominated animated short "Fifty Percent Grey," and has since made a couple of acclaimed live-action tinged shorts -"Silent City" with Cillian Murphy and "Blinky" with Max Records (watch both below). But despite the director being briefly attached to the live-action remake of "Akira" in the middle of the last decade, he's been yet to move into the feature film world, but he's about to finally get rolling on his debut.

Some of you will remember that last year the blogosphere was constantly reporting on director Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go) taking on the television pilot for Locke & Key, based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez‘s comic series. Fox didn’t end up optioning the series, but did they did premiere the pilot last month at Comic Con to a few hundred people. For everyone else who wasn’t in attendance, a trailer for the show ended up online, which you can watch below.

Last year, Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go) directed a television pilot based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's comic series Locke & Key. Miranda Otto and Nick Stahl led the cast about a small family that takes possession of a mansion that is full of secrets. Or full of secret doors, as it turns out. Fox decided not to go with the show, leaving the pilot as one of many TV orphans. The show got a one-off screening [1] last month at Comic Con, but showing the pilot to a few hundred people hardly counts as a public airing. Now we've got the closest anyone is likely to get to Locke & Key without resorting to piracy: a trailer for the show ended up online yesterday. See it below. There's a lot of setup here, but when things get a little more intense the show starts to look promising.

It isn't often that a network decides to showcase a property that it decided not to fully embrace, but that is exactly what Fox will allow to happen with the comic book adaptation Locke & Key next month at Comic Con. The pilot was directed by Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go) with Miranda Otto and Nick Stahl in the cast, but Fox elected not to pick up the show [1]. Despite that fact, the company has given its blessing for comic publisher Idw to hold a panel presentation for the show at Comic Con, complete with a screening of the full pilot. Deadline [2] says that the panel will take place July 22 at 10:30 Am with comic creators Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, as well as Josh Friedman (pilot writer/producer), Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The show was envisioned as a summer series, then possibly a fall prospect,...

Fox will be showing off the pilot of their new TV series Locke & Key at San Diego Comic-Con. The show is an adaptation of the Joe Hill created comic book, and the series was developed by producers Steven Speilberg, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, War of the Worlds) is writing the script and Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go) is directing.
The Locke & Key panel will take place on July 22 at 10:30 Am and will include a screening of the pilot, followed by a discussion with Hill, Rodriguez, the pilot's writer/executive producer Josh Friedman and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
The series stars Jesse McCartney as Ty, the eldest son of the Locke children. Ty was the closest with his dad in the story, and carries a special guilt for his father's death. The character isolates himself by retreating into his music.

Actor/singer Jesse McCartney has officially been cast in the upcoming TV pilot Locke & Key which is based on the comic book created by Stephen King's son Joe Hill. Ty was the closest with his dad in the story, and carries a special guilt for his father's death. The character isolates himself by retreating into his music, McCartney will also get to use his musical talents. McCartney never even crossed my mind as being cast in this role, but I guess we'll see how he does. He's kind of looks like the character.
McCartney will join Nick Stahl who was previously cast in the role of an art teacher named Duncan Locke, the younger brother who lives nearby and frequently visits.

According to Vulture Joe Hill's comic Locke & Key is no longer on the road to becoming a feature film. The graphic novel is now being adapted into a television series, and it's got some very solid talent developing the project. Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Josh Friedman are all involved with bringing this story to life on the small screen.
Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) will write and produce. Kurtzman and Orci recently signed a deal with 20th Century Fox TV, so the studio will end up producing with Spielberg's DreamWorks TV. There's a lot of great talent involved with bringing this story to life, and I think it's going to end up being a pretty awesome production. I'm excited for this.
