Yara Shahidi stepped out for Prada’s Womenswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025 runway presentation in an ensemble by the titular fashion label. Although the look, styled by Jason Bolden, echoed her elegant yet experimental style, the Grown-ish star‘s long, toned legs stole the show.

Shahidi’s edgy-chic look included a beaded black top layered over a button-grommet-punched white button-up. A simple leather belt secured her black high-waisted shorts, and tall black socks accented her black heels with buckle-strap details. A decidedly simple look, yet the accents and textures made it nuanced and striking on the actor/producer/activist.

Manga adaptations have always been one of the nucleus of the Japanese movie industry, with the trend recently expanding to webcomics. “My Broken Mariko” is one of those titles, which stands out, though, particularly since the characters in the movie are by no means manga-esquelly caricaturish.
My Broken Mariko is screening as part of Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2023
The movie begins with Tomoyo Shino, an officer worker, finding out from the news that her friend Mariko Ikagawa has committed suicide. Her anguish is quite evident, while, through flashbacks, we soon learn of a rather intense friendship that has been going on since childhood, with Tomoyo standing by Mariko who suffered extensive abuse in her father’s hands. Eventually, and after a fight with her rather obnoxious boss, Shiino steals the ashes of the deceased from her parent’s house and travels to a place by the sea, in an...

In tearjerker “And So The Baton Is Passed”, an adaptation of the eponymous hit novel by Meiko Seo, director Tetsu Maeda follows the stories of two girls and their stepparents. Yuko (bubbly and very likable Mei Nagano) is a girl who smiles regardless of what the world throws at her. Her doting stepfather Morimiya (Kei Tanaka in a performance that manages to make every scene feel like a J-drama) is an easy-going man who raises the girl after her mother disappeared one day. Miitan (Kurumi Inagaki) is a girl who cries easily, who is told by her new stepmother Rika (Satomi Ishihara in an equally exuberant and ominous performance) to smile whatever happens. One day, the girl’s chocolate-obsessed father Mito (Nao Omori) tells Miitan and Rika that he is moving to Brazil to make the best chocolate in the world. He leaves his daughter and wife to fend for themselves.

Anybody who has worked in an office knows that it can be vicious. Women are no different from men, sniping and backstabbing in pursuit of promotions or just making life difficult for each other because they can. In the office where Naoko (Mei Nagano) works, however, things have gone a step further – as will be clear to viewers in the opening scenes when our heroine is quietly chatting away and another woman goes flying into a filing cabinet behind her. She doesn’t bat an eyelid. Nao (as we will come to know her) values maintaining a professional demeanour.
What does it mean to be a proper office lady? You learn the ins and outs of the computer system. You answer the phone promptly and politely, remembering that the customer is always right. You keep your chin down and your voice gentle. You are always ready to help a senior member.

Naoko is an innocuous office worker at Mitsufuji, a company like any other. Colleagues talk about the latest developments in their favourite TV series, discuss their diets, and many have a good time during lunch hours. Naoko steers clear of the clique war between three departments led by ruthless, backside-kicking bosses. Then a new employee arrives – Ran Hojo. She has the charisma and strength of a manga heroine. Ran defeats the clan leaders one by one and becomes the undisputed leader of Mitsufuji. She also befriends Naoko, who is not interested in office fights. The legend of Ran is spreading and the female warriors from other sections are constantly challenging her, without success. But what if she is dethroned by another gang, seeking to wrest control of Mitsufuji? Who would stand up for the company’s honour?

26-year-old Naoko has just got herself a good job in a good Tokyo company, and settling in as a newcomer doesn’t seem that hard: the atmosphere is laid-back and her colleagues are friendly. But beneath the idyllic veneer of calm normality, the fires of war burn brightly. Is it just the same old battles for power being fought between the top brass? The usual turf-wars of white-collar workers? Oh no – this is a brand new, all-female kind of war whose foot soldiers are the innocent-seeming, implacable and pugnacious Office Ladies!

We are defined by moments, decisions made by us or for us by another. For Teiichi Akaba (Masaki Suda) it was always the choice between love of the piano (his mother’s passion) and a desire to please his father (Kôtarô Yoshida’s Josuke Akaba) by following a path towards political power — something he himself failed to achieve. Teiichi chooses the latter because of something his Dad said during a rant about status and control: that ascension to the height of Japan’s Prime Minister is to position oneself as maker of the country. Only at the top can you dictate true change and/or ensure your passions are protected under law. It’s a lofty goal that proves as much about self-sacrifice as it does about self-centeredness. And the journey begins now.
