This week, Freestyle Digital Media is getting into the holiday spirit early with director David Del Rio’s psychological thriller with a yuletide twist, Sick For Toys, which just recently premiered on VOD and various digital platforms. Starring Camille Montgomery, Jon Paul Burkhart, David Gunning, and Justin Xavier, the story follows a troubled young woman named Emilia (Montgomery), whose obsession with Christmas and playthings goes way too far, all with the help of her older brother, Edward (Burkhart), who has been catering to his sister’s whims ever since their parents died.
Daily Dead recently had the chance to catch up with Del Rio for a Q&A with the director, in which he discussed being at the helm of his first feature, collaborating with his cast and crew, and more. We also have a clip from the film for Daily Dead readers to enjoy.
Congrats on your first feature as a director.

The season we’ve all been patiently waiting for is nearly upon us, dear readers: fall! With Labor Day right around the corner, it’s only a matter of time until the days get much shorter, the leaves change colors, and the spooky season kicks off, and this autumn, we have one helluva great lineup of horror and sci-fi (as well as a few genre-adjacent) movies coming out that should keep everyone more than busy.
Since it can be quite an undertaking to keep up with everything hitting both the big and small screens (especially this fall—Wow), this writer has put together a preview of all the cinematic treats genre fans should have on their radars this September, October, and November.
September:
Sick For Toys (Directed by David Del Rio) – On VOD September 4th
Starring: Camille Montgomery, Jon Paul Burkhart, David Gunning, Justin Xavier, Melanie Thompson, Katie Wallace, Levi Ashlyn,...

Following a borderline extermination in a nameless small town, wannabe cowboy Mortimer (David A. Lockhart) ups sticks to another identikit Western village – via the unapologetically named Whiskeytown – in order to trap a supposed rapist Indian (Rick Mora) and collect the substantial bounty in return. Purchasing a young woman (Camille Montgomery) to use as bait, Mortimer is ultimately outsmarted by the Indian who empties the bounty hunter’s gun while he sleeps. Their conflict is shortlived, however, after a local tradesman and his friend – a man who will undoubtedly resemble Van Kilmer once he’s finished eating all the pies - inadvertently unleash luminescent spores, which in turn transform the rest of the villagers into zombies.
You know the drill: department store costumes, hand-carved performances, diabolical dialogue and exploitatively gratuitous nudity – this is an Asylum production in everything but name (we have Left Films to thank for this one). Originally titled The Dead and the Damned,...

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Left Films.
Director/writer: Rene Perez.
Cowboys and Zombies is being released in the United Kingdom August 1st on DVD. The film's title may or may not be a way to capitalize on the looming success of Cowboys and Aliens, which releases near the same date. In North America, this title is called the more unique, but less fun The Dead and the Damned and the film will release in this territory July 26th on DVD. This is an independent film from director Rene Perez, who also directed the upcoming War Machine. Set in the 19th Century, a meteorite crashes the party in a small western town. Zombies takeover, while a bounty hunter searches for a wild apache "indian" (Cowboys) to earn a plentiful bounty. Overall, this is a strangely enjoyable time from a gifted first time director.
David A. Lockhart plays a troubled Mortimer.

Cowboys Vs Zombies
Stars: David Lockhart, Camille Montgomery, Rick Mora, Robert Amstler | Written and Directed by Rene Perez
For a film called Cowboys & Zombies, the film features a relatively small amount of cowboys and indeed zombies. It opens on the hero of the day, Mortimer, as he rounds up his latest hit as a bounty hunter. It starts quite promisingly, surprisingly, it’s a decent enough shoot-out, if you overlook the terrible sound effects, acting, and blood splatters.
Mortimer then goes to the man who hands out the bounties, he wants to do one last job, that job is to bring in a Native American who has so far evaded capture. On Mortimer goes to bring in this Native American, just after he has an incredibly bewildering interlude with his horse, about two minutes goes by where he just strokes it and ponders life.
Meanwhile, some gold-miners have uncovered a...

Hot on the trail of a renegade Apache warrior, gun-slinging bounty hunter Mortimer passes through an 1849 California gold rush town, where local miners direct him into the mountains to track his prey.
While he is gone, the miners unearth a meteor that has landed in their sleepy town. As they crack it open, an explosion releases toxic spores, which quickly infect the entire population, transforming them into bloodthirsty,...
