Not all teenage werewolf movies are created equal.
As a kid, I couldn’t have been more primed to see 1985’s Teen Wolf, a movie that seemed positively made just for me. I was obsessed with star Michael J. Fox, first from his TV work as Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties and then as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, to this day my favorite movie of all time. Werewolves have always been my movie monster of choice, even as a boy of just eight years old. Combining Michael J. Fox with werewolves—in a high school comedy, no less, then (and possibly still) one of my favorite film genres—seemed a foolproof recipe for a classic. And, in its way, Teen Wolf is a classic: a movie that’s probably as good as it can be while still being far from great. It’s sweet, it means well,...

Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. Two versions, two formats, no waiting.

April 18th looks to be another fun day of home entertainment releases for genre fans, as we have an excellent variety of films—both old and new—coming home to Blu-ray and DVD. M. Night Shyamalan’s psychological thriller Split makes its way to both formats on Tuesday courtesy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Arrow Video is keeping busy with a trio of Blu-rays: The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, and their four-disc set celebrating Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko.
Other notable releases for April 18th include Scream Factory’s stellar collector’s edition of Tales From the Hood, Contamination .7, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Mephisto Waltz from Kino Lorber.
Donnie Darko: 4-Disc Limited Edition Set (Arrow Video, Blu-ray)
Fifteen years before Stranger Things, Richard Kelly set the template and the high-water mark with his debut feature, Donnie Darko.

To call 2016 a good year for horror would be an understatement. It was a fantastic year with a little something for every genre taste. You didn’t have to venture very far to find something that was absolutely fantastic. With great television shows like Channel Zero: Candle Cove or The Exorcist, wonderful films like The Witch and Green Room, and music from labels like Waxwork Records and Death Waltz Recording, the horror genre was finely taken care of. Here are few of the standouts for me in 2016.
Twin Peaks Vinyl Soundtrack (Death Waltz Recording / Mondo): Every single year, Death Waltz comes out with a release that makes me absolutely overjoyed. David Lynch’s films are stunning genre works. The lurid imagery, the bold characters, and the music composition within his films give Lynch’s work a unique quality. The Twin Peaks soundtrack, lovingly released by Death Waltz, comes...

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

Hey there, everyone! I sincerely hope this finds you all well (or at least coping) and eager (or at least willing) to take on a new year. I love doing year-end lists. For me, it’s a time of reflection, as well as expansion. Since I started with Daily Dead in April of 2015, my horror-view continues to grow; I’ve been so fortunate to meet and speak with some enduring legends of the genre, not to mention strike many new friendships through social media. But what my continuing immersion in this greatest of cultures has provided above all else is an appreciation for the variety and depth horror has to offer. It really has been a great year; unfortunately, I’ve missed some goodies, but dammit, I tried. So, without anymore ado whatsoever, here are a few (okay, a lot) of my favorite things from 2016.

Genre is a close-knit community. The independent filmmakers behind the bloody and wonderfully weird genre films rely on a small, dedicated fan base who respond to good filmmaking that pushes boundaries. Yet so much of this work exists outside of the mainstream, prompting us to ask the question: How do genre fans keep up with the latest films and filmmakers? IndieWire checked in with genre fans and hunted around the internet to find the answers.

In this sense, genre films are like other independent films, premiering at a handful of festivals with trusted curation can be the perfect platform to launch a movie. And while a number of films that draw from both the arthouse and genre tradition — for example “The Witch,...

Nearly 35 years after its release, John Carpenter’s The Thing remains one of the greatest—if not the greatest—horror movies of all-time. A masterpiece of dread, tension, nihilism, and staggeringly imaginative practical effects, it is a high-water mark of the genre and the best movie ever made by a filmmaker with a lot of great movies to his credit. This is John Carpenter’s masterpiece.
By now, you know the story. For this loose remake of Christian Nyby’s (and Howard Hawks’) 1951 sci-fi classic, The Thing from Another World, Carpenter and screenwriter Bill Lancaster went back to John Campbell Jr.’s original story “Who Goes There?” to tell the tale of a research team in the Antarctic who encounter an alien life form with the ability to assimilate and imitate any being it encounters. Totally isolated by the freezing temperatures and snowy landscape, the men can no longer be...

While Hollywood’s summer kicks off this Friday with a certain superhero showdown, the first studio feature we’re genuinely excited for this season will arrive in two weeks. Shane Black‘s The Nice Guy marks his return to the world of crime comedy, his last foray coming over a decade ago with the excellent Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, the 1970s-set tale follows tough guy Jackson Healy and private detective Holland March, who are working on a missing-person case.
Ahead of its release on May 20th, and even before its Cannes premiere on May 15th, Warner Bros. held the first screening last night at Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Complete with a post-screening Q&A featuring Gosling, Crowe, Black, and producer Joel Silver, we now have the first reactions. These are overwhelmingly positive, so it looks like Black has once again hit it out of the park.

2015 was, without a doubt, another excellent year for the horror genre. Summing up what I thoroughly enjoyed in the past year was a daunting task, simply because there were so many rad movies, TV shows, toys, games, podcasts, and more to choose from. Here are my favorites of 2015:
The Gift: If there was ever a PSA for being kind to everyone you meet, The Gift would be it. All of the acting in this film is extremely solid, but Joel Edgerton (who also directed the film) as Gordo is the one to watch. I instantly gravitated to his character in particular, whose back story hit close to home for me. It would have been easy to go in a campy direction with a character like Gordo, but Edgerton brings a level of gravitas to this immensely sad individual. I saw the film at the cinema months ago, and...

[Editor's Note: We want to wish Daily Dead readers a Happy 2016! Continuing our Favorites of 2015, Monte shares his list, which includes movies, vinyl releases, and more.]
Bone Tomahawk: An absolutely impressive film from S. Craig Zahler, “Bone Tomahawk” is the western film I always wanted. It’s a mix of unusual humor with touches of thoroughly effective and satisfying horror and beautifully rendered western era compositions. Add some rather stunning performances from an impressive cast, Kurt Russell, Matthew Fox, and especially Richard Jenkins, and you have one of the most unique horror, western, drama mash-ups you’ll experience.
Turbo Kid: Some call it a guilty pleasure while others, like myself, wholeheartedly defend the action, science fiction, and horror films of the 1980’s. “Turbo Kid” is a loving homage to all the era specific qualities you’d see from these guilty pleasure films combined into one. The fact that it gets nearly everything in tune with the 80’s is remarkable; the fact that it is also has an earnest and humorous story is an unexpected plus.

I’ve heard 2015 described as a bad year for horror, but that hasn’t been my experience. Between seeing a bunch of movies I really enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy for years to come) and the horror I’ve enjoyed through other outlets, I’ve been a happy genre fan this year. Here are some of my highlights:
We Are Still Here: Writer/director Ted Geoghegan’s debut feature may lack some of the nuance and technical polish of some other movies on this list, but no other horror movie has stuck with me as much this year. I love the wintery atmosphere, I love the loooong the film builds, I love the way that ghosts are depicted not as spooky things that float around and slam doors but instead are angry and vicious and have the immediacy of zombies. Most of all I love the way that...

You may or may not know this, but as of July 30th, Fearnet will shut its doors forever. In April, Comcast NBCUniversal bought out Fearnet. Because NBCUniversal already has Chiller and Syfy, it was decided that Fearnet was redundant. Most of the staff was laid off then, with a skeleton crew kept around to help with the transition.
I have worked at Fearnet for the last six years - the last two full-time as associate editor - and it has been the most formative experience of my life. It would drive my husband crazy because I would work non-stop - but when it was all said and done, he told me that he never heard me complain. Not once. I loved this job. I will continue writing about horror. Currently I am writing for Shock Till You Drop, and I have some stuff in the works for Fangoria. I am...

Last month, our own Rob Galluzzo took you inside of Burbank, California's Hyaena Gallery, where the walls were lined with art pieces paying tribute to Wes Craven, whose most iconic film - A Nightmare on Elm Street - celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. If you missed Rob's recap of the gallery's 'Legacy of Wes Craven' event, be sure to check it out, as the art on display was quite impressive.
This month, Hyaena Gallery turns their attention to another master of horror, as they're playing host to a John Carpenter art tribute, dubbed 'All Outta Bubblegum.' The group art exhibit is not only on display over at their Burbank location but it's also available for virtual viewing on their website, and today we wanted to show off some of our personal favorite pieces from the show.
So check 'em out below, and see many more over on the Hyaena Gallery website.

When I was a kid, there were two movies that terrified me as a kid. This wasn’t the creeping dread I felt when I watched Night of the Living Dead or The Twilight Zone. No, this was outright fear, the kind that sends you under the covers, sleeping in a sheen of sweat with the lights on. And maybe it sounds silly but as someone with a highly overactive imagination who lived in the woods, I don’t find it silly at the time. But now when you’re older, you look back and feel stupid about some of the things that terrified you or the film just isn’t that good. The...

After Silent Night, Deadly Night: Part 2 failed to garner even half the reaction that the original film did, the subsequent installments in the franchise from that point forward all went straight-to-video. It was in 1989 that rights holders Live Entertainment – who had released the first two films on VHS – spearheaded the revival of the series, rushing a second sequel into production.
Independent producer Arthur Gorson was the man put in charge of the third installment, hired for the job in March of 1989 with the mission of having the film finished and released on video in time for that year’s holiday season. I really hate the bad rap that Halloween III gets. I mean, it’s a stinker reputation. People are either supremely dismissive or they appreciate it for what it is – a completely underrated film with a downer of an ending and trying something new when it appears that it seemed to be heading the way of franchise, and as we undoubtedly know, it has.
The idea being that Carpenter and Debra Hill wanted something new, after all an unstoppable killer would become old hat after a while. And so, they decided to hand the reins over to the talented Tommy Lee Wallace and this is what he produced. And merciful me, it sunk and it sunk badly. Does this mean it’s a bad film? Not at all. Man, January 12 and 13 are pretty amazing days in the history of horror movies. Universal Pictures released The Invisible Man Returns, a sequel one of their most classic horror titles, which boasted never-before -seen visual effects for which John P. Fulton received an Oscar nomination. Vincent Price plays the Invisible Man in his debut horror role.
Universal also released Son of Frankenstein, the sequel to Bride of Frankenstein, starring Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Basil Rathbone. Son of Frankenstein was hugely successful for Universal and re-invigorated the careers of the actors and crew involved with the production. It’s also the film where Frankenstein first dons that stylish fur vest.
In terms of more modern horror, this weekend saw the release of Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, which you can read all about here. It’s a personal favorite of FEARnet writer Rob Galluzzo. I particularly like the fact that, in the trailer,...

Leatherface and family destroyed the hefty weekend box office competition, including those pesky Hobbitses, bringing in $23 million.
This was a surprise to many considering the film score a 21% on the Tomato Meter. But, horror fans know what they like, and they clearly like Texas Chainsaw 3D - at least the younger ones.
“In an era where moviegoing has fallen off among teenagers and younger adults, Texas Chainsaw was an exception, with 63 percent of the audience under the age of 25. Among this demo, one out of three said a major draw was singer-songwriter Trey Songz, who stars in the film alongside Alexandra Daddario and Dan Yeager,” The Hollywood Reporter said.
Texas Chainsaw 3D is also unique in that 83% of fans watched it in 3D compared to the average of 50% for other films. Makes perfect sense. If given a choice, why wouldn’t you pick the one that offers gore flying at your face?...

Kids show ‘Fathertism’
Kia has coined a new word – Fathertism – in a new campaign for its Next Gen Sorento car.
Led by a TV commercial, the campaign sees a mother struggle to gain her children’s affection after they give preferential treatment to their dad because he bought a new Kia Sorento – hence the word, fathertism.
Created by Innocean, the campaign launched last night and covers both free-to-air and subscription TV, online via a microsite, outdoor and social media. It includes an online competition to find Australia’s favourite father. The competition winner gets a Sorento.
Part one of the campaign sets up the children’s bias towards their dad, while the second takes a creepier approach.
The ads were produced by Finch and directed by Nick Ball. Planning and buying is being handled by Initiative while We Are Social is handling the social media.

Halloween III: Season Of The Witch
Stars: Tom Atkins, Stacey Nelkin, Dan O’Herlihy | Written by Tommy Lee Wallace, Nigel Kneale | Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace
Does this mean it’s a bad film?...

Dog food brand Pedigree is giving people the option of watching two different ads in cinemas, depending on what sort of 3D glasses they wear.
The two different videos, projected on to the same screen, show the consequences of whether or not the viewer donates to the Pedigree Adoption Drive, a charity to find homes for maltreated dogs in New Zealand.
In one video, a dog is rescued. In the other, the dog is never found.
The agency behind the campaign was Colenso Bbdo. Finch was the production company.

We always get excited here in the More Horror offices when a new Drew Daywalt horror short film releases. It kind of gives us a reason to throw a party (not that we need a reason of course...it's kind of like Mad Men meets Horror Movies around here on a regular basis).
Recently the Daywalt Fear Factory released its newest short film The Old Chair and we have it for you to check out below.
The short movie stars horror favorite Aj Bowen (A Horrible Way to Die, The House of The Devil) and the always busy Maria Olsen (Paranormal Activity 3), Kaylee Score and Jonica Patella.
In The Old Chair, a young woman gets an old, free chair off of Craigslist... what could possibly be frightening about that? Find out by watching the short film below.

That master of short-short horror is at it again. FEARnet's own Drew Daywalt has just released his latest mini-masterpiece, entitled The Closet. Written and directed by Daywalt -- and produced by Rob Galluzzo, Bradley James and FX mastro Jeff Farley -- it stars the adorable Brea Grant, Kaylee Rose Score and Bonnie Aarons. Says producer Galluzzo, "If you've got less than three minutes, then allow us (hopefully) to creep you out! I'll go on record as saying that Kaylee and Brea make the cutest on-screen sisters ever. Enjoy! Plenty more in the works!" Watch The Closet after the jump.

No, we're not talking about another look back at the famed film. Rob Galluzzo's The Psycho Legacy more than covered that ground. What we have here, folks, is an entirely different beast.
According to The La Times Anvil! The Story of Anvil director Sacha Gervasi is in discussions to write and direct a scripted film based on a chapter in the career of Sir Alfred.
According to two insiders who've been briefed on the plans, executives at Ivan Reitman's Montecito Pictures are in discussions with Gervasi to take the reins of Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, a long-gestating film based on Stephen Rebello's 20-year-old book about, well, just what the title says. (It previously had drafts written by Rebello and Black Swan writer John McLaughlin.)
Given his outstanding work handling the real life material of Anvil, Gervasi seems like a perfect choice to do justice to this particular tale.
