A female colleague once said that all movies about pregnancy fall under the category “body horror,” regardless of whether they’re a horror film or not. When I naively asked if that was true, she replied: Dude, have you ever been pregnant? Check, and mate. Pop culture’s overall view regarding bringing new life into the world as a simple, follow-the-manual miracle has stuck even into the 21st century: You get an adorable baby bump, gotta rush to the hospital, labor can be hard, and then [pop] out comes a newborn.

Rebecca Lenkiewicz will be this year’s recipient of the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award in recognition of her adapted screenplay for She Said, the Universal film about the New York Times reporters who broke the story that exposed disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. The guild said Thursday that she will be honored at the WGA Awards’ Los Angeles ceremony March 5 at the Fairmont Century Plaza.
Lenkiewicz is also nominated this year for a WGA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. She Said is based on the investigation by Times reporters Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey and Rebecca Corbett, and the book by Kantor and Twohey that helped propel the #MeToo movement by uncovering the system that had enabled years of sexual assault by some of the most powerful men in Hollywood.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

Judas and The Black Messiah helmer Shaka King picked up two Oscar nominations this morning for Best Original Screenplay as a co-writer of the Fred Hampton and Bill O’Neal feature, alongside Will Berson, Kenneth Lucas, and Keith Lucas, as well as a Best Picture nomination as a producer on the film. “It was a wonderful surprise. I wasn’t anticipated it,” said King, speaking to Deadline after the nominations were read.
The marquee Best Picture nomination for Judas and The Black Messiah marked the first time in the award’s history that the nominated producing team for any Best Picture nominee is an all-Black team led by King, MacRo CEO Charles D. King, and Ryan Coogler.
“Anytime you’re the first black anything and you talk about something in a positive light, it’s very bittersweet,” said King, likening the achievement to his upbringing as a “vegetarian” who “grew up in a black neighborhood.

Aside from being well-made and effective as a movie, Warner Bros.’ “Judas and the Black Messiah” has a goal: to counter decades of government lies about the Black Panther Party.
The party was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in 1966, and ceased operations in 1982. The film, which started streaming Feb. 12, centers on the 1969 murder of Bpp leader Fred Hampton and his betrayal by colleague (and FBI informant) William O’Neal.
“Judas,” directed by Shaka King, who wrote the script with Will Berson, from a story by Keith Lucas and Kenneth Lucas, is a contender in the Oscar races.
King had been interested in a project about Hampton, and found out Berson had already written a script; they worked together to merge their two approaches.
King tells Variety, “CoIntelPro was out to destroy the Black Panther party and the radical left. This is an opportunity to shed light on an important topic,...

The awards season’s narrative has been the “year of the women,” as female filmmakers, screenwriters and artisans have been making strong cases for nominations at the Oscars in categories like best picture and director. The Writers Guild of America Awards, however, might have missed the memo, only nominating four women over two films: Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” and Jena Friedman, Erica Rivinoja and Nina Pedrad, three co-writers from “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”
In the three categories for original, adapted and documentary feature, 31 total screenwriters were nominated, four of which are women, and three come from the same feature film.
Many high-profile contenders were not eligible for recognition, including “Nomadland” (Chloé Zhao) and “Pieces of a Woman” (Kata Wéber), along with independent darlings like “The Assistant” (Kitty Green), “Farewell Amor” (Ekwa Msangi) and “Herself” (Clare Dunne). Despite this fact, there were still many to choose from.

One of the most striking things about Judas and the Black Messiah, Shaka King’s new Molotov Cocktail of a film, is how it really isn’t Fred Hampton’s story. The movie is obviously about Hampton, the charismatic Black Panther Party leader who’s given sweltering life here by Daniel Kaluuya in the performance of his career. Yet like the title suggests, the Black Messiah of this narrative is observed from afar—and from the vantage of the man who doomed him.
It’s a familiar tact for stories about greatness cut short, and figures too large for a movie’s runtime to grasp. That’s how Lin-Manuel Miranda accounted for Alexander Hamilton via the envy of Aaron Burr, and why Jesus Christ Superstar told the its parable through the prism of the silver-tongued apostle. But in Judas and the Black Messiah, this narrative technique has never been more uncomfortable or slippery.

With “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Warner Bros. (and now HBO Max) has the makings of a dynamic and refreshing awards contender on their hands. Knowing the tastes of Oscar voters, including the newer members that have changed the landscape of nominees and winners in the past few years, it could rally support in all the major categories, including best picture, director (Shaka King), lead actor (Lakeith Stanfield), supporting actor (Daniel Kaluuya), supporting actress (Dominique Fishback), original screenplay, production design, cinematography (Sean Bobbitt), costume design (Charlese Antoinette Jones), film editing (Kristan Sprague), sound and original song.
Twelve possible nominations are laying upon the feet of the 97-year old studio. So why does it feel we should prepare ourselves for an inevitable fumble of the ball when we are so close to the Oscars field goal line? Because we’ve been here before.

Studios didn’t exactly jump at the chance to make a movie about the late Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton.
“It knocked me on my ass,” admits Shaka King, the co-writer and director of “Judas and the Black Messiah,” the blistering new look at Hampton’s short life and enduring impact. “I was under the impression that if you make a movie about a Black Panther, produced by the director of ‘Black Panther,’ which made a billion dollars, starring two of the best actors of our generation, and you have a producer and co-financer in Charles King, who is willing to put up half the budget, it’s going to be a bidding war. That was not the case.”
Hollywood is facing a lot of pressure to become more diverse in the stories it tells and the filmmakers it promotes. However, Black filmmakers say that it’s still a struggle to get projects made.

During the late 1960s, Fred Hampton was one of the biggest voices in the American Black Panther Party where he preached revolutionary socialism and founded the Rainbow Coalition. He was also shot repeatedly in the head at point blank range by members of the Chicago Police Department in 1969. In 2021, director Shaka King looks to tell Hampton’s story, and that of the man who betrayed him, in visceral detail.

New Line has purchased a comedy pitch, “The Come Up,” an original story from “Sorry to Bother You” co-star Jermaine Fowler, Variety has learned. Fowler, who also stars in “Superior Donuts,” will star and also serve as executive producer.

In The Lucas Brothers’ first Netflix special, On Drugs, Keith and Kenny Lucas riff on life, career decisions, police etiquette, weed, twin anomalies, and even professional wrestling. Like other famous comedic fraternal icons like the Marx Brothers and the Smothers Brothers, these guys are light on their feet — you don’t see the comedy hammer coming. Their act is a clever wending of intellect and unusual observations which is served up in a laconic set far less frenetic than anything Groucho and Chico ever dished. These guys are a quiet riot, a nerd-storm of classic WWE appreciation who interestingly also collect vintage...read more...

The Lucas Brothers are finally back on your TV.
The twin comedians will be featured in their first Netflix comedy special, “The Lucas Brothers: On Drugs,” which will premiere April 18. On Tuesday, the streaming service released its first trailer for the special, which you can watch below.
In the special filmed at The Bell House in New York, the Lucas Brothers take on a variety of topics in their signature, laid-back style. Their set ranges from twin stereotypes and Richard Nixon to ingenious plans to fix pay inequality and police brutality. Oh, and drugs. As one might expect, drugs are a huge part of their comedy.
“Here’s a rule of thumb,” says Kenny (or is it Keith?) in the trailer below. “You should never do ‘shrooms with a dude that looks like you, man.”
The trailer also includes some nifty Peter Max-style psychedelic animations. Take a look:...

Since no new episodes of the Lucas Bros. Moving Co. and Stone Quackers TV shows have aired since the middle of 2015, it was pretty clear Fxx had cancelled the animated series. Now we have confirmation that both shows are over, at least for now. Deadline reports no new episodes are being produced for the Animation Domination High-Def (or Adhd) programming block, which originally debuted Fox.That said, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf told the news outlet, "We have access to the Adhd library. Some of these shows may air on Fxx over time, and it’s possible we may commission subsequent cycles of one or more of these shows. A number of them were quite good." Keith Lucas and Kenneth Lucas created Lucas Bros. Moving Co. and, along with Jerrod Carmichael, voiced the main characters. Stone Quackers comes from creator Ben Jones, who voiced the...

Move over Chris Pratt — twin sketch comics Kenny and Keith Lucas are jumping into the dino game. Together with TruTV’s other “Friends of the People,” the Lucas Brothers introduce the world to “Jurassic Narc,” a raptor (or is he a T-Rex?) cop who goes undercover to infiltrate the drug game. The skit kicks off with one of the drug-dealing twins holding a gun on three potential snitches, one of which is a dinosaur. The narc is actually pretty easy to spot, based on clues that include a gigantic lost tooth/talon near the swiped stash. Plus, the now-extinct creature...

If you’ve ever wanted to hear Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First?” or the detention scenes from The Breakfast Club re-created by the voices of animated TV characters, well: (a) That's an odd coincidence, and (b) we have both, and more. Voice actors Alex Borstein (Family Guy), John Roberts and Larry Murphy (Bob's Burgers), Heather Lawless (Stone Quackers), and Keith and Kenny Lucas (Lucas Bros. Moving Company) joined the Vulture Festival's Animated Voices panel on Saturday and read famous film and TV scenes in the style of their beloved characters. Turns out there is a way to make Fifty Shades of Grey sound even less sexy.

Maybe it's because they are twins, so they make double the impression, but in a short time it seems like the Lucas Brothers have made a big impact on comedy, whether it was their brief but memorable cameo in 22 Jump Street or the sketch show they appear on, Friends of the People. And now their animated show, Lucas Brothers Moving Company, which airs on Fxx tonight at midnight, is in its second season. Vulture had Hannibal Buress, who voices the twins' mother on the show and is currently on a stand-up tour (tickets are available on his website), interview the brothers. The comedians discuss being on the show, wrestling, and being twins.Hannibal Buress: I’m a hard-hitting journalist, man. I’m trying to transition out of stand-up into this more. Kenny Lucas: There’s a lot of longevity in this, man. Barbara Walters did it for like 70 years.

‘Tis the season for awards, and while voters are busy weighing the merits of top Oscar contenders, the industry’s intangibles have fallen by the wayside. The year in film is comprised of so many movie moments and overlooked details that go unrecognized by Hollywood, so here’s a list of superlatives and unconventional awards that serve as an alternative to the prim-and-proper Oscars. When 21 Jump Street came out it had little expectations. A reboot of a heavily dated late 80’s television program that will be directed by people who never made a live-action film before?—surely it will fail. Not only did it not fail it was both a critical and financial smash hit. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller took the ridiculousness of the reboot and used it in their favor by making it an updated meta spoof on Hollywood’s need to reboot everything. Now the question becomes, can they do it again?

Thank God the Lucas Bros. (a.k.a. Keith and Kenny Lucas) didn't follow through with law school. If they did, we probably wouldn't have played witness to the pop-culture treasure trove that is the animated show Lucas Bros. Moving Co. or their cannabis-fueled antics in 22 Jump Street. And we probably wouldn't — actually, never mind, they probably would still have the wherewithal to come up with a satiric show about community organizers in Brooklyn. But before that rolls out, the twins are joining forces with fellow comedians-in-arms Jermaine Fowler, Kevin Barnett, Jennifer Bartels, Lil Rel Howery, and Josh Rabinowitz (pictured above) to unspool a sketch-comedy series on truTV. Titled Friends of the People, the show debuts tonight with jokes tied to Morgan Freeman, Steve Harvey, and murderous geriatrics. Vulture caught up with the Lucas Bros., both of whom are writers and exec producers on the show, to talk about some...

James Clayton argues the case for spending more time with some supporting characters, crying out for a movie of their own...
Moviemakers and film studios produce movies. Said movies are then shipped to theatres around the globe. Paying audiences then turn up to watch these movies and some of them are very popular and take in a lot of money at the box office. Some of them, in fact, take in obscene amounts of money at the box office.
Moviemakers and film studios like it when the pictures they've produced turn out to be box office hits and bring in obscene amounts of money. The next natural step is obvious - milk the cult cashcow for all its worth to give cinemagoers more of what they like and simultaneously yield the inevitable enormous profits.
Sequels - and threequels and prequels and obliquels - are the standard, most obvious means of achieving this.

The first 21 Jump Street reboot movie didn’t just safely navigate the traps and pot holes of cheesy TV adaptations — it made the exercise a breezy art. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s odd-couple pairing as two narc cops going undercover at a high school snuck up on critics — a luxury they don’t have at their disposal in the sequel.
But that doesn’t seem to be stopping director Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie) from doubling down on the same comic sensibility. The only thing that’s changed for 22 Jump Street is the setting — college — and...

This week’s new entry in the Summer movie schedule has the distinction of pulling off the seasonal cinema trifecta. So, what’s this multiplex “hat-trick”? Well, number one, it’s a big studio action comedy. Number two, it’s a feature film remake of a decades old classic TV show. And the topper, number three, it’s a sequel. Usually TV adaptations are done in one, like The A-team and Bewitched. 22 Jump Street is the follow-up to 2012′s surprise smash 21 Jump Street, based on the late 1980′s Fox TV crime drama (created by The A-team’s Stephen J. Cannell with Patrick Hasburgh) that propelled Johnny Depp to stardom. But the flick from two years ago wasn’t a straight-faced, literal movie expansion. Taking a cue from 1987′s Dan Aykroyd/Tom Hanks starrer Dragnet, 21 was a loving parody of the earlier cop show. Can Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum possibly...

Welcome back to Jump Street, where double the budget means double the payoff – right?
Following in the footsteps of 21 Jump Street, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return not only to continue their undercover antics, but also self-consciously poke fun at Hollywood’s reboot/remake obsession. The question is, can their previous smash success be replicated? Michael Bacall’s 21 Jump Street screenplay blends humor, action, and a self-aware nature that incorporates satirical storytelling, creating a hybrid genre experience mirroring that of spoof comedies. Such punnery only benefits humor on a level of novelty though, which 21 Jump Street smartly realizes and minimizes.
22 Jump Street invests heavily into the idea of “self-aware” humor, but more than its predecessor, losing some of that initial magic. Had Nick Offerman’s repeat dialogue been the only cheeky acknowledgement to the surprise success of 21 Jump Street, I would have been a happy man, left only to enjoy...

Beyond the presence of brilliant directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, 22 Jump Street is one of our most anticipated films of the summer because of the return of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's chemistry. In 2012 they proved to be an absolutely fantastic comedic pair in 21 Jump Street, and all of the trailers, TV spots and footage we've seen from the sequel makes it seem they will be back on top of their A-game in the follow-up. Need proof? Just watch the brand new clip above that just found its way online. Presumably set fairly early in the movie, this clip - which comes to us via Yahoo! - features Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) moving into their new college dorm room and meeting their neighbors across the hall, played by twin stand-up comedians Keith and Kenny Lucas. Not only are the film's main stars really great in this scene,...
