Jeremain Lens’ arrival has sparked much excitement on Wearside, mainly for his pace, internationally-proven ability, and goalscoring potential. However, one crucial detail has been largely overlooked regarding the Dutchman: he has instantly improved the team’s cool factor.
Sunderland have never been the coolest of clubs. They lack the youthful swagger of a club like Arsenal or Southampton, and their most impressive players in recent years never generated the excitement of a personality such as a Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Andrea Pirlo.
Niall Quinn, Kevin Phillips, Jordan Henderson and Lee Cattermole, although undoubtedly fantastic on the pitch, are all far less interesting than the stars of fellow Premier League teams in terms of sheer coolness. Sunderland’s current squad were recently pictured on a boat trip around San Francisco Bay, and resembled a gaggle of cheeky schoolboys as opposed to a team of professional footballers – one of the most envied professions in the world.

When it comes to Sunderland Afc, the fans don’t expect Barcelona-esque football, nor do they expect titles, trophies and immeasurably glory to suddenly fall upon the club. However, they do expect 100 per cent commitment to the cause.
Fans want to leave the Stadium of Light on a Saturday safe in the knowledge that their day wouldn’t have been better spent burning their money from the comfort of their own homes. Even if the team aren’t winning every game, they still want to be entertained.
That’s when cult heroes are born. They’re the individuals who might not be the media darlings of the squad, but players who can bring the crowd to their feet whether it be through a moment of magical skill or yet another body-on-the-line block.

It’s fair to say that Sunderland haven’t had a very enjoyable time since the turn of the century. Apart from a pair of seventh-placed Premier League finishes early on, they’ve faced two of the worst relegations in league history, several gutwrenchingly narrow escapes, and a slew of terrible players.
For every Kevin Phillips or Jordan Henderson there have been many more underwhelming names at the Stadium of Light, from knackered has-beens to highly-rated youngsters.
In the current world of Youtube compilation packages and constant transfer chatter, every football fan with a Twitter account fancies themselves as a professional talent scout. The fact of the matter is, no transfer is risk-free. There’s no telling how a player will slot into a certain system, or adapt to their new surrounding.s

Cannes Critics’ Week, devoted to first and second features, has unveiled the line-up for its 54th edition (May 14-22).
In total, 1,750 shorts and 1,000 features were submitted for consideration.
Artistic director Charles Tesson said this year’s poster - showing actress Lou de Laâge, seemingly embracing the air on a beach - captured the spirit of the parallel section.
“On the poster the actress Lou de Laâge embraces the open horizon in front of her,” he said. “This wonderful energy and amazing life force it carries embody the desire leading us to discover the new breath of fresh air in cinema worldwide.”

Among the ruins of some diabolical Sunderland transfers, it can be easy to forget the ones that worked.
You’ve seen some of the worst Premier League signings for Sunderland, now it’s time to celebrate the best.
While the club hasn’t had the best of times in recent years, some new signings have been absolutely crucial in keeping the team afloat, and even charged Sunderland all the way to Wembley.
While it’s easy to pick out the numerous flops, there are some players who have stood out for their respective team, and also in the entire Premier League.
While you may be thinking Kevin Phillips is a certainty for the top spot, remember he was signed after Sunderland were relegated back in 1997.
This list highlights players who were signed while the club held a Premier League position.

Over the years, Sunderland have made some shrewd moves.
Kevin Phillips was snapped up for just £325,000 from Watford back in 1997 and went on to win the European Golden Boot. Simon Mignolet was signed for £2 million before his impressive form led to a £10 million switch to Liverpool.
And even more recently, Jermain Defoe’s ‘no money involved’ swap move from Toronto is looking like a fantastic piece of business.
But for every one transfer that the Black Cats have got right, it seems like another five have gone horribly wrong.
In times of dire need, a team might splash the cash on a proven goalscorer to find he’s nothing more than a joke on legs. Sometimes a well-considered loan move to re-ignite a team’s season could result in a player barely touching the ball. And on rare occasions it’s been known for...

This year's Soccer Aid has so far raised £4.2 million, as the charity event saw the Rest Of The World defeat England 4-2 at Manchester United's Old Trafford tonight (June 8).
Almost 70,000 fans witnessed the World's Clarence Seedorf score a hat-trick and a chip from Nicky Byrne cancel out goals from England's Jamie Redknapp and Kevin Phillips.

Leicester City extended their lead at the top of the Championship with a home win over Middlesbrough in very wet conditions thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and Richie De Laet in the second half.
The Foxes were forced to make an early change following a collision between Liam Moore and the Middlesbrough goalpost as he tried to follow in Anthony Knockaert’s swinging free kick. He was taken off minutes later with a possible rib injury and was replaced by Marcin Wasilewski after just 9 minutes on the clock.
The torrential downpour played a major part of the game in the first half as the heavens well and truly opened up minutes before kickoff, and throughout the rest of the half. Both sides were unable to play their usual style of football due to the slippery surface and the scores remained 0-0 at the break.

Sunderland have not beaten Manchester United since they last met in the League Cup over 13 years ago. Kevin Phillips’s extra time penalty took the Black Cats into quarter-finals in November 2000 with Red Devils goalscorer Dwight Yorke being sent off.
United have since won 16 of the 20 subsequent encounters that have all come in the Premier League and the other four were drawn. The Black Cats will have home advantage first in this two-legged tie with the winners to face either West Ham United or Manchester City at Wembley.
Gus Poyet has had defensive injuries worrying him, but despite Sunderland’s struggle in the league they remain in both domestic cup competitions. The basement club of the English top flight will be targeting an upset in this first leg similar to their shock win over City in November.

Crystal Palace are hoping to continue their run as the Premier League’s busiest club in this transfer window by signing old boy Andy Johnson from Qpr, according to the club chairman.
Johnson notched 21 goals in 37 appearances for the Eagles during their one-year stint in the Premier League but couldn’t keep Palace from the relegation trap door.
And speaking to Radio Five Live, chairman Steve Parish confirmed that the club had made a bid for the club’s top scorer during their previous Premier League season in 04/05 before announcing that deal might not be the end of their window. Parish said:
“We have made a bid for Andy Johnson we are waiting to hear, that would be a permanent deal. We are trying to get someone else in on loan and we are trying to buy another one as well.”

Tottenham Hotspur were the victors at Selhurst Park today in their opening game of the season against newly promoted Crystal Palace.
Spurs got things underway with new signing Roberto Soldado kicking off alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson.
It was a cagey start from both teams as they found their feet, with neither goalkeeper really being tested in the early stages.
The first real chance came in the eighth minute when Mousa Dembele drove forward and found Danny Rose on the left wing. The full back crossed to give Roberto Soldado his first sniff of goal, but the Spaniard headed both high and wide.
Spurs started to take charge and, just a minute later, Kyle Walker and Aaron Lennon combined to threaten down the right, but Lennon’s final ball was deflected out for a corner which came to nothing.
Two minutes later, another Spurs debutant – Paulinho – thought he was through on goal,...

A preview of Crystal Palace’s Premier League season including ‘player to watch’ and position prediction.

It has hardly been the ideal preparation for their return to the Premier League after an 8 year absence, with manager Ian Holloway becoming increasingly frustrated with the process of player recruitment. Back in the big time, Palace are being linked to a plethora of players on a daily basis. It is hard for fans to get too excited as it is obvious that many of the links are either a result of lazy journalism or agents desperate to get their prized assets in the shop window. Marouane Chamakh is set to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to Crystal Palace, according to Team Talk.
The Arsenal striker will become Palace manager Ian Holloway’s sixth signing of the summer with the deal expected to be announced within the next few days.
The structure of the deal is still to be decided though the Moroccan is expected to join the newly-promoted Premier League side permanently, on an initial, season-long contract.
Former Blackpool manager Holloway has admitted that he has found things difficult in the transfer market as he prepares for a second crack at the Premier League after helping the Seasider’s to promotion in 2010.
But he has broken the transfer record at his new club, signing the likes of Stephen Dobbie, Jerome Thomas, Jose Campana and Elliot Grandin, while veteran Kevin Phillips has re-signed for another year.

Six years ago Fernando Torres landed in England as a highly-rated £20 million striker off the back of scoring regularly for Atlético Madrid for five successive seasons in La Liga.
24 months earlier Rafa Benítez had guided the Reds to a surprise Champions League victory, defeating AC Milan on penalties in the final, but had failed to build on this success in the league.
At the end of the 2006-07 season Liverpool had finished 3rd in the Premier League but some 21 points behind champions Manchester United.

Football is one of the most glorious forms of entertainment, and the drama that accompanies the sport has made it a hugely profitable international commodity.
The UEFA European Under-21 Championship will provide the football lover with a chance to witness some of the best young players in the world. With the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Monaco, Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal & Tottenham Hotspur all in the market for bright, young talent, many of these youngsters are auditioning for big money moves.
This piece will focus on the prodigies of the beautiful game, the players that make you sit up, wipe the pizza crumbs of your t-shirt, and take notice. Unashamedly, I have focused on players who have the skill to excite, the ability to exhilarate, thus, perhaps it should come as no surprise that showboaters and speed merchants are heavily represented here.

This Sunday brings possibly one of the most important Tyne and Wear derbies of recent years. With Sunderland only outside the drop zone on goal difference and Newcastle just five points clear, the game means a lot more than local bragging rights.
Even without the added incentive of precious points in the relegation scrap, this game is huge. The whole region is gripped by it, anyone from the area struggles not to be taken in by its enormity.
With many great Tyne and Wear derby clashes coming before in the Premier League, we look back on just five of the best:

The first ever Tyne and Wear derby at The Stadium of Light is also the first on our list. Newcastle raced in to a 2-0 lead with defender Didier Domi having his shot deflected off Niall Quinn and in to the net on...

Funnyman Will Ferrell and chef Gordon Ramsay were left injured as England beat the Rest of the World 3-1 in celebrity sporting event Soccer Aid on Sunday.
Hell's Kitchen star Ramsay was given oxygen on the pitch and was stretchered from the field of play after he was clattered from behind by former England international Teddy Sheringham in the charity game.
And Anchorman star Ferrell hobbled out of the match when he suffered a leg injury late in the second half.
Kasabian rocker Serge Pizzorno opened the scoring for the Rest of the World team with a sensational chip over former England goalkeeper David Seaman, but the England side fought back in the second half with goals from Sheringham, captain Jonathan Wilkes and soccer ace Kevin Phillips to win the game 3-1.
Stars including Mike Myers, Gerard Butler, Edward Norton, Woody Harrelson and Michael Sheen went up against an England side which included Take That's Mark Owen and Jls singers Aston Merrygold and Marvin Humes in the biennial match, held in Manchester, England.
The event, organised by Owen's fellow Take That star Robbie Williams, raised more than $6.4 million (£4 million) for Unicef.
Pizzorno was awarded the honour of Man of the Match for his stunning goal.

The true story of the Tuskegee airmen is given the Hollywood treatment, but the results may prove that history is sometimes more interesting than the movies. What the film does have going for it are some exhilarating war scenes. After a lot of activity in the last window, and a large output for large forward Peter Crouch, Stoke probably won’t do a lot of business this time out, but there are certainly moves to make if Tony Pulis wants to bring European football to the Britannia Stadium for the second season in a row.
Eighth in the league at the half-way point is nothing to be sneezed at, and 2011/12 so far has definitely been heading in the right direction, though a Goal Difference of minus 10 at this stage in the season is bottom five form, and it is something that Tony Pulis seriously needs to address if the end of the season is to bring success.
Like a few other clubs in the Premiership, Stoke will fall under the Sell to Buy banner, though there may be a few millions available if the right player becomes available, especially...

The San Francisco/New York multi-media duo, NewVillager, have dreamed up a new mythology of their own, with which they create their art. Actually, it's unclear which came first, the art or the mythology, but now they're evolving together over a series of bi-coastal installations, performances and videos. Ben Bromley and Ross Simonini put so much cryptic thought into their symbology, and this heavy process, that you'll be forgiven if they leave you feeling like you've been seized upon by Joseph Campbell, wielding a pop song like a scalpel to the dance center of your brain.
At it's heart, the NewVillager mythology is a system of thought that uses a series of symbols assembled in a way to better understand transformation -- say the transformation of an idea into a song, or a song into a video shot by Kevin Phillips and directed by Ben Dickinson (LCD Soundsystem, Q-Tip, The...

Tony Yayo says he will be billed as "Tony Yayo" not Marvin Bernard, his government name, when the credits roll on his feature film debut. The most energetic member of the G-Unit will get his shot at the big screen come 2011, when "S.W.A.T.: Fire Fight" hits theaters.
"My part got edited [out]," Yayo laughed about his cameo in 50 Cent's 90-minute film "Before I Self Destruct." "I ain't mad at you, 50. Having a guy like 50 Cent as a friend is a big advantage."
Fif recently put in the call to director Benny Boom, so that his close friend could get a look in the sequel to 2003's "S.W.A.T."
"Shout out to 50, shout out to Benny Boom," Yayo said last week during a visit to the MTV offices.
