Getting caught up in a deadly kidnapping, being torn away from your loved ones and forced into witness protection, tracking down a serial killer of vulnerable young girls… none of the above exactly scream ‘Lol’, and yet they’ve all become the subject of British crime comedy-dramas in recent years. The “you’ve got to laugh” mentality is clearly in our national DNA, no matter how bleak the circumstances.
Attracting huge names in comedy, from Matt Berry, Stephen Merchant, James Corden and Joanna Scanlan, to the brilliant Gbemisola Ikumelo, Emer Kenny, Kerry Howard, and created by the writers behind People Just Do Nothing, Peep Show, Succession and more, here are some of the best darkly funny crime comedy series of recent years.

The BBC first announced it was making six-part comedy thriller Black Ops back in June 2021 – and boy is it worth the wait.
Created by Famalam’s BAFTA-winning duo of Gbemisola Ikumelo and Akemnji Ndifornyen, it follows two inexperienced Community Support Officers – Ikumelo plays Dom alongside The Wheel of Time’s Hammed Animashaun as Kay – who get recruited into a perilous undercover Met Police operation infiltrating a London drug gang.
There are so many elements that combine to make Black Ops a joyous must-watch:
1. You’ll Instantly Love The Characters
The sibling-like partnership between Dom and Kay makes us feel immediately at ease in their world. So when the enigmatic Di Clinton Blair covertly approaches them to join his “off the books” undercover operation in episode one, we’re invested in their story from the off.
Dom is smart, quick-thinking but also ultimately immature and quite spoiled – she lives at home...

"Experience the music and energy of the 1970s punk underground." IFC Films has released an official Us trailer for a film titled London Town, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as iconic musician Joe Strummer of the band The Clash. Not to be confused with the musical London Road, this film is set in the 1970s about a 15-year-old boy introduced to the iconic punk rock band The Clash and it changes his life forever. Daniel Huttlestone stars as Shay, Nell Williams as Vivian, along with Tom Hughes, Natascha McElhone, Dougray Scott and Kerry Howard. This looks like it might be a great double feature with Sing Street, or any punk rock film from England. Featuring music from The Clash, The Ramones and Buzzcocks. Fire it up. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Derrick Borte's London Town, direct from IFC's YouTube: In 1970's London, when 15-year-old Shay hears the music...

From the creator of Him & Her, BBC Two comedy Mum returns tonight for its second series starring Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan...
Screenwriters often say their characters are inspired by people they’ve met in real life. If that’s the case for Stefan Golaszewski, he’d better hope that none of them ever watch his shows and recognise themselves. That’s hardly a risk of course. Golaszewski’s best—and by best, I mean worst—comic creations are so lacking in self-awareness they’d never notice the similarities.

Take Laura, the bigoted, self-involved sister of lazy but harmless Becky in Him & Her. You won’t meet a meaner, more judgemental, less-informed person this side of a Daily Mail comments section.

As Russell Howard's Good News enters its 10th series, could he be tempted to break the Us?
The British comic has already appeared on Stateside TV when starring on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, while he recently completed a successful tour across the Atlantic.
Russell told Digital Spy that while he would "never say never" to the idea, he thinks there already too many great stars doing brilliant work over there, including his friend and fellow Brit John Oliver.
"They've got that sown up," he said. "I'm good mates with John Oliver, and I think those guys [including Stephen Colbert] are very good at that kind of thing.
"I just don't see where we would fit. They already have their versions of it."
The comedian also spoke to us about his upcoming one-off BBC movie A Gert Lush Christmas, in which he stars alongside his sister Kerry Howard for the first time.

You've heard of Breaking Bad, Orange Is The New Black & House Of Cards, what about Danger 5, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Darknet and more?…
Quite understandably, column inches can't fill up quickly enough with praise for the likes of Netflix original series House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul and Marvel's Daredevil. What though, about some of the lesser-known series available on the UK streaming site?
Sweeping past the well-publicised riches of Doctor Who, Sherlock, Arrested Development, Community and the like, we've ventured into the slightly dustier shelf of TV shows available on Netflix UK that may be lesser-known or less widely celebrated than the big hitters out there, but are still richly deserving of your time. Some are new, some are old, some were cancelled long ago, some are ongoing, several are from outside the UK and Us.

The BBC has announced a number of new comedy shows, including six-part series The Tracey Ullman Show.
Tracey Ullman's last BBC series - A Kick up the Eighties and Three of a Kind - aired in the 1980s, after which she concentrated on a Us TV career.
The actress and comedian - who will portray various characters living in, or visiting, the UK - said: "It's a privilege to be doing this. I still feel as inspired to inhabit people as I did when I was 6, standing on the window sill in my mother's bedroom, putting on a show.
"The BBC has changed a bit since the last time I worked here, when it was all men in bow ties who had completed National Service. Now there are a lot more women. Great ones.

A rather tipsy Rob Beckett attempts to tell the story of Henry VIII in a new clip from Drunk History.
In the first episode of the Comedy Central UK series, the intoxicated comedian rambles through the tale of how the king met his fourth wife Anne of Cleves.
As Beckett narrates, comedians including Mathew Horne and Marek Larwood act out what the comic is saying.
The episode also features Kerry Howard talking about the reign of Queen Victoria while plied with alcohol.
Drunk History is based on the Us web series of the same name, produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. The UK version is narrated by Jimmy Carr.
Drunk History airs tonight (January 12) on Comedy Central at 10pm.

Six years after finishing fourth in The X Factor, Diana Vickers has released two albums and launched an acting career on stage and screen.
Last year, she was due to make her TV acting debut in the comedy series Give Out Girls on Sky Living, but the series was delayed and later picked up by Comedy Central.
Give Out Girls stars Vickers and Him & Her's Kerry Howard, and was co-written by Tony MacMurray and Hatty Ashdown. It follows a group of four girls who work in promotions and carry out roles like handing out free light bulbs to commuters.
Ahead of the show's premiere on Tuesday (October 14), Digital Spy and others had a quick chat with the singer and actress about her latest project and where it may take her in the future.

An Always Sunny-ish new sitcom on BBC Three? Sign us up. Here's Jake's review of Siblings episode 1...
This review contains spoilers.
When you think of most classic sitcom setups, the common theme is of people trapped together against their will. Steptoe And Son, Porridge (literally in that case) and Red Dwarf all explore the relationships of people who have no choice but to spend time in each other's company. Siblings takes a slightly different tack, Hannah and Dan are stuck with each other because no one else in their right mind would want them.
Siblings set up is as simple as its title - brother and sister duo Hannah and Dan are horrible, self obsessed people with practically zero redeeming qualities. Played by Fresh Meat's Charlotte Ritchie and Totally Tom's Tom Stourton, they go through life with zero self awareness or shame, thinking only of themselves. In this...

Diana Vickers's sitcom Give Out Girls will debut on Comedy Central.
The six-part series was originally ordered by Sky Living in May 2013, but a deal has been reached to transfer the show to Comedy Central, which is a joint venture between Sky and Viacom.

"As we have a history of this with shows such as Threesome, also produced by Big Talk, they thought Give Out Girls would be a good fit for Comedy Central.

Him & Her was named best Situation Comedy at last night's awards.

Okay, so we might not be wearing our gladrags and we might not be sipping champagne, but who says a onesie and a takeaway can't be glamorous?
It's BAFTA night, and while we're not at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane with all the best and brightest from the last year of television, at least we can join the party from our sofas. Yep, we'll be blogging along with the awards - which start at 8pm on BBC One - so grab your slippers and a cuppa and join in by tweeting @digitalspy and leaving your comments below...
And as a reminder, the awards actually start in "real life" at 7pm - but we'll be doggedly going along with the television broadcast and pretending we're not an hour behind everyone else, so there's no fear of spoilers. If you want things as they happen, we'll be updating our winners' list here.

So happy that Marvel's Agents of Shield is back on Channel 4 - do you have any teasers for what's coming up?

As for teasers, remember Dr Franklin Hall (Ian Hart), the physicist who suffered a nasty accident back in 'The Asset'...?

Want to make sure you don't miss anything great on the telly in the next seven days? Never fear, because Tube Talk has done all the hard work for you and smushed all of this week's must-see TV into one snappy rundown. Check out what you should be checking out below...
Backchat with Jack Whitehall and His Dad: Wednesday (November 20) at 10pm on BBC Three
It seems we can't get away from Jack Whitehall nowadays. If it's not Bad Education that's lighting up the box, it's Fresh Meat or A League of Their Own. Now he's called for reinforcements in the shape of his father as he continues his bid to take over the world.
Backchat plays on the awkwardness that arises when Jack unleashes his anarchic posh boy routine around his dry and disapproving dad Michael, while the celebrity guests (Jeremy Paxman and Danny Dyer this week!) presumably look on in bemusement.

Severe weather, increased heating bills, Christmas carols playing in shops. Let's face it, October is horrible. That's why we're here to give you one less thing to stress about by providing you with tantalising deets about your favourite programme in Tube Talk's Q&A!
This week, we've got news on Misfits, that thing Diana Vickers is in and Fresh Meat (yet again)...
When will Fresh Meat return?
Ah yes, it wouldn't be a proper Tube Talk Q&A without a Fresh Meat series three query from our old chum Kadeem Graham - seriously, Kadeem loves this show like Josie loves booze, like Vod loves parties, like Jp loves "classic bants"....
So, Channel 4 still hasn't confirmed an exact, concrete, honest-to-goodness air date for the new Fresh Meat episodes, but expect real, proper news soon. Like, very soon. Like, 'it might possibly be on next month' soon.

We're a regular bunch of amateur Sherlock Holmeses, so it's rather fitting that this week we have insider info on Elementary... plus The Blacklist, Him & Her, Franklin & Bash and more!
Any news on the second series of Elementary?
Johnny Lee Miller's Sherlock and Lucy Liu's Watson will be back on Sky Living in the next month or so - and season two opens with Holmes taking a trip to his old stomping grounds of London, where he not only encounters his ally Lestrade (played by the legendary Sean Pertwee) but also his brother Mycroft, brought to life by none other than Rhys Ifans...
Sounds like a real treat to us, and if you want...

Him & Her is to return to BBC Three for a fourth and final series.
The six-part Him & Her: The Wedding - starring Russell Tovey and Sarah Solemani - will be set entirely during Laura's (Kerry Howard) wedding.
In addition, the channel has recommissioned Pramface - the sitcom, which stars Scarlett Alice Johnson and Sean Michael Verey as two young parents, will return for a third series.
Alongside the two returning series, BBC Three controller Zai Bennett has also ordered several new comedies for TV and online.
Uncle stars stand-up comedian Nick Helm as Andy, a dissolute out-of work musician who forges an unlikely alliance with his 11-year-old nephew, while People Just Do Nothing is a mockumentary about pirate radio station Kurupt FM and its crew.
In addition, eight comedy pilots have been commissioned for BBC iPlayer to showcase up-and-coming comedy talent.

Former History Boy is also the man who might have been Tintin but what he really wants is 'the career of Julie Walters. As a man'
One part facial elastics to two parts yappy bounce, interviewing Russell Tovey is a bit like grilling Scooby-Doo. Sitting in his local in north London, a chalkboard menu and Chesterfield sofas kind of affair, Tovey proudly holds forth on Him & Her, scattering his sentences with endearing yelps and incredulous splutters. "This second series seems more sure of itself. Stefan [Golaszewski, the writer] has notched it up, the characters have become more grotesque," he explains over a ginger ale.
Called out in the press for being crude, filthy, lewd and grubby, Him & Her is a show about Becky (Sarah Solemani) and Steve (Tovey), a pair of loved-up, layabout nobodies who do nothing and go nowhere. In short, it's everything conventional romcoms aren't and is all the funnier, more truthful for it.
