Over the past week, one story has dominated the conversation in and around the entertainment industry. On Feb. 6, Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery announced that this fall, they would be coming together to launch a sports streaming service that houses all of the sports content owned by the three respective companies. Almost immediately, surprise and concern began to pop up from across the streaming spectrum as distributors like sports-focused live TV streaming service Fubo and the country's largest cable provider Comcast voiced anti-competition concerns. Major sports leagues with matchups slated to be a part of the new platform — primarily the NFL — are already looking for loopholes to prevent their inclusion. Disney wants to sell a minority stake in ESPN to one or more companies/sports leagues, and it could be in for a hefty payday when it does.
Money comes and money goes. Disney is finding that out this week, as the company agreed in principle to pay at least $8.61 billion for Comcast’s stake in Hulu on Wednesday evening. The total price could be higher once all the math is done, but either way, it’s a considerable investment on Disney’s part. Still, if Bank of America analysts are correct, Disney could be poised to recoup some of that cash in short order.
BofA analysis suggests ESPN might be worth as much as $24 billion. The information will be crucial as Disney attempts to seek strategic partnerships for ESPN. The company could sell as much as 36% of ESPN and still retain majority control. How Much for That ESPN in the Window?...

Disney offered a glimpse of ESPN as a standalone business, and revealed that while the channel is still profitable, cord cutting is definitely having an effect on its bottom line.

Disney CEO Open to Selling ESPN if Strategic Partner Can't Be Found for Standalone Streaming Service
Five years ago, it would have been difficult to imagine the entire future of ESPN would be as up in the air as it is today. The channel was available in 100 million homes in 2011 but has now slipped behind FS1 to be the second-most distributed cable sports channel, with less than 72 million households subscribing.
ESPN is not the only channel to lose a substantial portion of its viewers, of course. Cord cutting has taken a big bite from cable revenues all across the country, and the problem is only getting worse. Disney CEO Bob Iger knows this quite well, which is why he recently signaled a willingness to sell off Disney-owned linear channels like ABC, Disney Channel, Freeform, and others. The focus media-wise at Disney seems to be all about streaming, which is certainly good news for Disney+ and Hulu.

Cord cutting hasn’t slowed down one iota in 2023. According to data from Nielsen, as reported by Sports Business Journal's John Ourand, 3.1 million customers have dropped a cable, satellite, or live TV streaming subscription between January and August of this year.
The numbers have had an effect on even the most evergreen channels. ESPN has not been immune, either; the channel that 78% of cable viewers rated as a “must-have” in September of last year has fallen behind FS1 in terms of carriage by pay-tv customers. Nielsen’s numbers have FS1 in 71.375 million homes, whereas ESPN is now in 71.321 million.

Updated, July 31: Longtime ESPN NBA announcer Mark Jackson has joined the ranks of on-air talent laid off of late by the network. Almost exactly a month ago, Jackson’s broadcast partner (and former coach) Jeff Van Gundy was among the 20-odd boldfaced names let go by the network. See the list below. Since then, speculation has abounded about Jackson’s fate. That speculation came to an end today.
Previously, June 30: On the same day ESPN ran special extended coverage of player comings and goings during NBA Free Agency, about 20 of the network’s top on-air talent found out they would be on the move, as well.
A person familiar with the cutbacks told Deadline they are unrelated to the multi-round Disney layoffs implemented in recent months. The source indicated that many of those affected by the new cuts have contracts beyond June 30 and will be paid out accordingly,...

Cord-cutting sports fans have dreamt for years that they’d be able to open the ESPN app and start streaming the same channel they could watch with a cable or satellite subscription from anywhere at any time. The self-proclaimed worldwide leader in sports has announced that starting this fall, it will become the new broadcast home of “The Pat McAfee Show.” McAfee will continue to host the show daily on ESPN, its streaming cohort ESPN+, the ESPN app, and the ESPN YouTube channel.

Exclusive: The Big Apple has already lost multiple film festivals this year due to the pandemic. The New York Film Festival is optimistic it won’t suffer the same fate, however, and is still very much planning to go ahead in September.
Organizers told us today, “The festival will be going ahead and everyone can expect some exciting announcements about our plans in the next few weeks.” Amid much industry uncertainty due to the pandemic, the festival’s announcements will include “comprehensive information” about the event, whose 58th edition is due to run September 25 – October 11, 2020. This year marks the first at the helm for new fest director Eugene Hernandez.

ESPN Insider is going away after 20 years: The Disney-owned sports media giant is switching Insider subscribers over to ESPN+, its recently launched premium streaming service.
ESPN has begun notifying Insider subscribers about the change, which takes effect next Tuesday (Aug. 28). With the latest update to the ESPN App (version 6.2), premium digital subscription content will all simply be ESPN+, which will include what has heretofore been ESPN Insider content.
The ESPN+ branding within the app and espn.com will replace ESPN Insider and all content and features will be available in the same subscription. The goal, according to ESPN, is to simplify its digital direct-to-consumer subscription offerings to fans with a single service — while offering even more value in their subscription.
ESPN declined to disclose how many subs it has currently for Insider, which launched in 1998, or ESPN+, which debuted this spring.

Manziel was leaving Craig's with his fiancee Bre Tiesi (in a sick car, Btw) and we asked him who should go #1 in the upcoming NFL Draft. Johnny is clearly a fan of Saquon Barkley -- the star running back from Penn State -- with Manziel telling us ... "He's a beast. I'm pulling for him.
