Fresh off releasing Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé has dropped her new “Pony Up Remix” for the album’s first single, “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
The surprise version of the track begins largely the same as the Cowboy Carter song before the action moves from the Lone Star State to Louisiana on the second verse, with the remix featuring a new verse that gallops along to a New Orleans bounce breakdown. According to the remix’s credits, The-Dream was also involved in the Pony Up production:
Along with the remix, Beyoncé also launched a new website — BeenCountry.

Beyoncé’s new album, Cowboy Carter, is out in the wild. In a press release, Beyoncé provided extensive insight into the making of the album and its variety of influences. Plus, read our review the album here.
Each Song Was Inspired by a Western Film
Notably, each song is its own version of a reimagined Western film, including Michael Matthews’ Five Fingers For Marseilles; James Bridges’ Urban Cowboy; Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight; Clint Eastwood’s Space Cowboys; Jeymes Samuel’s The Harder They Fall; and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Often times, they films were playing on a screen during the recording process.
Additionally, some aspects of the album’s percussion were inspired by the Coen Brothers’ ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
Beyoncé also found inspiration in traditional country, R&b, blues, zydeco, and Black folk music, as well as from her childhood trips to the Houston Rodeo.

Usher’s first studio album in six years largely operates as a high-wire homecoming of sorts for the R&b singer. Released two days before his halftime performance at Super Bowl Lviii and following a highly successful Las Vegas residency, Coming Home feels less driven by creative ingenuity or an aesthetic vision than by sheer showmanship. This is further emphasized by the inclusion of the sleepy “Risk It All,” a duet with H.E.R. from the Color Purple soundtrack, and a remix of BTS member Jungkook’s “Standing Next to You,” both of which, thematically and sonically, have little in common with anything else on the album.
Which is to say that the 20-track Coming Home, like many of Usher’s post-Confessions output, is a bit of a bloated mess. For every few colorless duds defined by their embrace of contemporary R&b, such as the overly smooth “Kissing Strangers” or the brassy “Big,...

Fantasia reflects on her journey and her drive in the music video for “Superpower (I),” the end-credits song in the new musical adaptation of The Color Purple.

The music video for Fantasia’s “Superpower (I)” from “The Color Purple” is here.
“Superpower (I),” written and produced by The-Dream, is performed by Fantasia during the musical film’s end credits. The track is shortlisted for the best original song Oscar, as is the film’s “Keep It Movin.’”
Directed by Taylor Fauntleroy, the video features Fantasia singing the powerful track with her younger self, made possible with the use of AI technology. Fantasia, dressed in a sparkly silver and black gown, sings with her 19-year-old self in the red dress she wore for her 2004 “American Idol” performance of “Summertime.” The soaring ballad is an anthem that comes to symbolize Fantasia’s 20-year career from reality competition star to the award-winning lead of “The Color Purple.”

When hitmaking producer The-Dream got the call to write an original song for the remake of The Color Purple, he almost couldn’t do it. He was busy — busy with Beyoncé.
“We were working on the Renaissance film, and I got a call from [music executive] Larry Jackson. He was like, ‘Yo, man, I need a record and I don’t know if you could do this,’” The-Dream tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And I was like, ‘Ah, man, I’m in the middle of this Renaissance thing and I’m doing more.’ I think people have an idea of what they think I do and it just kind of stops there. Like, ‘Oh, he writes a song and he goes home.’ It’s like, ‘Nah, that’s not quite what I do.’”

While the Original Song Oscar shortlist is typically good about spreading the wealth around, three movies dominated close to half the spaces. Barbie nabbed noms for three songs, while The Color Purple and Apple Original Films’ Flora and Son got two each. Of the 15 spots, Warner Bros owns five of ’em between Barbie and Color Purple.
Warner Bros has been pushing the Barbie soundtrack, produced by A Star Is Born “Shallow” Oscar winner and 7x Grammy winner Mark Ronson, in a major way this season with meet-and-greets and screenings for the latter, as well as performers Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and even Ryan Gosling. All three shortlisted songs from Barbie –“Dance the Night,” “What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken”– already are nominated over at the Golden Globes. When has there been a juggernaut from one movie between the Globes and Oscar shortlist?

Now that :a[the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike is over]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/actors-union-makes-tentative-deal-to-end-strike/' } we'll be getting more announcements about projects gearing back up as performers can join movies and TV shows. One today, for mysterious new horror movie Opus, includes word via Deadline that John Malkovich and :a[The Bear]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/tv/reviews/the-bear-season-2/' } breakout Ayo Edebiri are leading the cast.
To be clear, this one is in a slightly different category — it's among the smattering of movies that received interim agreements from the union. While that's technically no longer necessary, it means the movie will be progressing either way.
With A24 backing this one, Opus has writer/director Mark Anthony Green in charge. And while plot specifics are being kept quiet, it's apparently said to focus on an iconic pop star’s return following his decades-long disappearance. The-Dream and Nile Rodgers...

Unlike other big award shows, the top Grammy categories are devoid of a reliable precursor like how the SAG Awards called all of the acting categories for this year’s Oscars. But one indicator that many pundits look out for at the Grammys themselves is a nomination or win for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical: 11 out of the last 12 Engineered winners also took home a Grammy in their genre album category. And in the past 12 years, seven of the winners have also been nominated in Album of the Year, and five of those seven went on to win that category. This year’s Album of the Year winner, “Harry’s House” by Harry Styles, indeed took home Best Engineered Album. But checking out what else “Harry’s House” won, there might be a new category that also can give us a hint: the just-instituted Songwriter of the Year.

The 65th Grammy Awards take place on Sunday 5 February, with music fans preparing for the rematch of the century: Adele vs Beyoncé.
Both artists are up for Album of the Year, six years after Adele took home the top prize for her third record, 25. The win over Beyoncé’s critically adored surprise album Lemonade was highly controversial; Adele herself famously declared that Beyoncé deserved the prize during her acceptance speech.
This year, the British singer is competing with her record-obliterating fourth album, 30, released in 2021. A four-star review in The Independent praised the songs as “handsomely crafted ballads about love and its various agonies”, with Adele’s voice, as ever, the main draw. “Adele possesses that perfectly imperfect voice, gargantuan and frail all at once,” critic Annabel Nugent wrote. “It’s epic without resorting to showy, melismatic affectations. It yawns into unexpected shapes and makes intonation fun.”
Beyoncé, meanwhile, surprised fans...

Husband and wife Beyonce and Jay-Z are the Grammys’ ultimate power couple. They are now tied as the most nominated artists in the history of the event. Beyonce picked up nine 2023 Grammy noms, more than any other artist, while Jay-Z earned five. That brings both of them to 88 total nominations, more than any other artists in the history of the awards. Check out the list of Grammy nominations here.
Beyonce swept the general field with nominations for “Renaissance” (Album of the Year) and “Break My Soul” (Record of the Year and Song of the Year). Queen Bey also earned bids in R&b, dance, and visual media fields for her work on “Renaissance” and her song “Be Alive” from the “King Richard” motion picture soundtrack. Does this mean she’ll finally win Album of the Year, a category that has eluded her time and again? Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.

Rihanna is on a roll! At midnight on Friday, the singer released her second contribution to the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” soundtrack, a soul-stirring ballad titled “Born Again.”
“I’d give my heart to this place/I’d give my whole soul and whatever it takes, never run away,” Rihanna sings in the emotional ballad. “And I’d relive this just to see your face again/I know that you’d do the same, born again.”
The single was written by singer/producer The-Dream, who also penned RiRi’s massive 2007 hit, “Umbrella,” as well as “Birthday Cake,” “Phresh Out the Runway,” and more.
“Born Again” dropped two weeks after Rihanna dropped the soundtrack’s lead single and her first single in six years, “Lift Me Up,” accompanied by a music video.
The single was penned by Tems, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and director Ryan Coogler, and has global influences attached to it.

The BeyHive (and much of music Twitter) swarmed songwriter Diane Warren’s account Monday after she asked, “How can there be 24 writers on a song?” accompanied by eye-roll emoji. The tweet was in reference to the credits on Beyoncé’s Renaissance standout, “Alien Superstar,” which has that same number of writers credited.

We're sittin' eyes wide open and we've got one thing stuck in our minds.
That's right, Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik's highly-anticipated new music video for the Fifty Shades Darker track, "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," has dropped -- and we've got it on repeat.
In the super seductive video, Taylor and Zayn play celebrities at a Fifty Shades-style soiree, though they both seem more focused on their own heartbreak than the crowd of masked strangers.
