This time last year, A24 released “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” in which the first version of Evelyn Wong that we meet is the least successful out of all her multiverse iterations, the one where the decision tree of her life has led to the worst outcome. But some of that is down to bad luck or chance. But in A24’s “Beef” — which shares a cinematographer with “Eeaao” — Danny (Steven Yeun) and Amy (Ali Wong) seem to actively make the worst choices they possibly can over and over again.
And so Lee Sung Jin’s Netflix series gave cinematographer Larkin Seiple a very different challenge from his work on The Daniels’ film. The camera itself is often the straight man of “Beef,” finding just the right compositions to frame and reframe the protagonists in their ever-deepening revenge spiral without ever drawing too much attention to itself.

“If it was so easy it would have been done before,” Everything Everywhere All at Once star Michelle Yeoh said of the Andrea Riseborough Oscar controversy this morning.
Questioned on the last minute campaign that saw Riseborough nominated for 27,000-grosser To Lesie, Yeoh downplayed any notion that this had bent Academy rules.
“The Academy has always prided itself on having regulations and playing by the rules and if [cheating them] was so easy it would have done before,” Yeoh told the BBC’s Today program. “We are always evolving on how to protect our integrity and I have great faith we will continue to do that.”
The Academy examined Riseborough’s Oscar nod, which came following what some deemed aggressive campaigning from the likes of fellow nominee Cate Blanchett, but declined to rescind. It is, however, mulling “whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication.

With her lead actress 2023 Oscar nomination for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Michelle Yeoh made history as the first self-identified Asian actress ever nominated in the category, and, further, is one of four Asian actors recognized this year (her co-stars Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan are also nominated, as is Hong Chau for The Whale).
Everything Everywhere All At Once led all films with 11 total nominations, and Yeoh stresses this is because of the movie’s emotional core: “We are a little movie that has such a great, loving, beating heart that so many people relate to. And I think that is the reason why we are here today with all these nominations, because we’re just getting an outpouring of love — it’s been such a healing process. Not just in the movie, but [for] our audience as well, as they walk through the journey with this crazy woman called Evelyn Wong.

We already knew Michelle Yeoh was a great actress, but her recent performance as Evelyn Wong in "Everything Everywhere All At Once" was a milestone highlight in an already impressive career. Yeoh portrays the unassuming laundromat owner as she discovers the concept of the multiverse and her place in it. The audience gets to watch as her character transforms from a somewhat narrow-minded, stressed-out woman into quite possibly the most powerful person in existence. Evelyn goes through an overwhelming range of emotions, not to mention an eclectic range of personas, and Yeoh nails it every step of the way.
But before she could begin working on the movie, Yeoh had one demand. In the script, written by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (aka Daniels), Evelyn was originally named Michelle. "The only thing I said to them was the character cannot be called Michelle Wong," Yeoh explained in a recent edition...
