In 2022, after two seasons, HBO canceled Ridley Scott’s sci-fi series Raised By Wolves. The show was created by Aaron Guzikowski, Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker. HBO would release a statement saying, “While we are not proceeding with a third season of Raised by Wolves, we are beyond grateful to the stellar cast and crew, our creators Aaron Guzikowski, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and the entire team at Scott Free Productions, for their beautiful artistry and unique ability to immerse fans into the world of Kepler-22b.”
The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with Ridley Scott’s studio team as they speak on his Scott Free company’s projects as well as his upcoming epic Gladiator II. When asked about the decision for HBO to cancel Raised By Wolves, they admitted that the news had been particularly heartbreaking as they felt that the series was just about to realize its potential.

In today's era of streaming, it feels like no show is truly safe. Just this week we got the news that Disney+ had canceled its Star Wars show The Acolyte barely a month after it finished airing; before that, Prime Video took the axe to its popular fantasy romance series My Lady Jane.
But for me, looking back on the many casualties of the streaming wars, few losses sting more than Raised By Wolves. Created by Aaron Guzikowski and produced by Ridley Scott, Raised By Wolves was a daring, weird science fiction series about a pair of androids named Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) who undertook a dangerous mission to restart humanity on the distant planet of Kepler-22b after the Earth was all but destroyed. It quickly carved out a passionate fanbase, tapping into the sort of shocking sci-fi horror vibes that Scott was known for from movies like Alien and Prometheus.

Jake Gyllenhaal starred in many roles where the character is overly complicated, bizarre, or probably both and in between. Clearly, the actor has a penchant for complex figures that would baffle the viewers, and that is exactly what he did with his character in Denis Villeneuve’s 2013 film Prisoners.

Gyllenhaal always aims to give his best portrayals, but he would not be able to do that if the material does not reflect it. Being the dedicated actor that he is, he’s more than willing to contribute to revising the script.

While I’m pretty sure that only parents can properly fathom the indescribable horror of discovering that your child is missing, I think anyone can relate to the desperation of losing a loved one. That’s why it makes sense that this premise has been used as a jumping off point for all sorts of revenge narratives since time immemorial, with badass protagonists often doing whatever it takes to either recover or avenge missing family members.
However, there is one film that explores a much less glamorous side of these cinematic vendettas, and that would be Denis Villeneuve’s 2013 thriller Prisoners, a modern classic that explores just how far a desperate man might go when he’s convinced that his terrible actions are completely justified.

With so many streaming platforms and broadcast channels, it's a challenge for shows of any genre to find an audience and thrive. This is especially true of the horror genre, which feels more niche in appeal than sitcoms and prestige dramas. However, not every cancellation has to do with low viewership, particularly with recent changes across the entertainment industry. From studio politics to fickle viewer attention, some shows get cut short for the oddest of reasons.
These horror shows were each canceled for relatively unconventional reasons, not entirely having to do with ratings or production costs. With everything from acclaimed international productions to adaptations of popular licensed properties, nothing is safe from behind-the-scenes drama and obtuse content strategies. The only thing scarier than some of these shows is the inane rationale that ended them before their time.

Jake Gyllenhaal has made quite the career out of playing sleazy, threatening, and generally weird men. He’s a master at contorting himself into the kind of guy that you know has something wrong with him, but you just can’t put your finger on what. While his physical appearance and acting chops go a long way toward creating that effect, Gyllenhaal is more than willing to get involved in the writing process to make his characters weirder.
Appearing on “Hot Ones” to promote his role in Guy Ritchie’s “The Covenant,” Gyllenhaal recalled his experience working with Denis Villeneuve on “Prisoners,” which turns 10 this year. The twisty thriller sees Gyllenhaal playing a detective trying to track down two missing girls while one of their fathers is determined to seek his own form of vigilante justice. Amazon Studios has acquired an unpublished short story titled The Dwelling, Deadline reports, and Michael B. Jordan (Creed) is on board to produce the feature film adaptation.
According to the site’s report, Michael B. Jordan may also end up starring.
The story, you ask? “The Dwelling tells the story of a newly divorced father who discovers a house buried in his backyard. He is a former all pro football player trying to ease into retirement, and the hits he took on the field starts to make him unsure what is real and imagined, as things begin to go awry. The short story has a fantastic male lead at its center.”

Written by Aaron Jayh, the short thriller story The Dwelling has never been published – but that’s not stopping it from serving as the basis of a film that has Prisoners and Raised by Wolves writer Aaron Guzikowski writing the screenplay, with Michael B. Jordan and Liz Raposo’s company Outlier Society attached to produce. Jordan is also considering starring in the film. Deadline reports that Amazon Studios came out the winner in a bidding war over the project, paying an amount somewhere in the high six figures. Ground Control’s Scott Glassgold will also be producing the film with Jordan and Raposo.
Deadline notes that “Several studios bid and put together talent alignments, but it came down to Amazon and Netflix.” And Amazon won.

Don't be put off by the 2.5 hour running time of Denis Villeneuve's psychological thriller - you'll be too busy gripping the arms of your chair to look at your watch. Hugh Jackman stars as a carpenter, who becomes increasingly unpredictable when his six-year-old daughter is abducted and the police seem to be dragging their heels when it comes to tackling the man (Paul Dano) he believes has done the deed. Writer Aaron Guzikowski creates a moral maze, where the judgement of all the characters, including police detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) is called into question and Villeneuve doesn't let the tension slacken for a second.

The ending of "Prisoners" (spoilers follow) leaves the viewer with much to ponder, not the least of which is ... what happens after the credits roll? The 2013 film, written by Aaron Guzikowski and directed by Denis Villeneuve (in his English-language debut), chooses an interesting moment to fade to black. Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) has saved the day, rescuing a kidnapped girl and shooting and killing the bad buy — or gal, played by Melissa Leo — who was about to give her a fatal injection. After rushing the girl to the hospital and recovering from his injuries, Loki returns to the scene of the crime: a house where the girl's father, Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman), lies unknowingly trapped underground in the backyard. Aaron Guzikowski's "Raised By Wolves" may have been cut short by HBO Max after season 2, but the Ridley Scott-produced sci-fi affair was a breath of fresh air for the genre. It was a philosophical horror extravaganza with androids at the center of its narrative: two wannabe parents named, you guessed it, Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim). Sure, convoluted world-building inhabits the series almost to its detriment, but the overwhelming sense of being swept away into a futuristic world fraught with religious and ideological conflict was enticing enough to warrant a watch.
The series' penchant for crafting unique character designs and environments is part of what made "Raised By Wolves" so compelling. From the Mithraic faction attire to the sleek grey bodysuits covering Mother and Father's robot bodies, the sci-fi show utilized a very specific bleak and minimalistic aesthetic. The dystopian sci-fi series "Raised by Wolves" was a collaborative effort by series creator Aaron Guzikowski and executive producer Ridley Scott, and the latter was heavily involved in the process of creating the look and feel of the show. Exploring android-human relations is not new territory for Scott, as the director has etched detailed, futuristic landscapes in his "Blade Runner" and "Alien," while "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" dived deeper into android psyche with Michael Fassbender's David 8/Walter. Scott and Guzikowski take the concepts further in "Raised by Wolves," in which two androids arrive on an alien planet to create an atheistic colony...

HBO cancelling "Raised by Wolves" after two seasons was disappointing for fans since the show tackled dense topics within the structure of a tense, thought-provoking drama about humans and androids. Showrunner Aaron Guzikowski had first conceived the idea for the show in form of a spec script, which gradually evolved into an emotionally-resonant, breathtaking saga with compelling characters.
In fact, Guzikowski's script was so good that Ridley Scott himself was convinced that he had to absolutely come on board and direct the pilot episode (and serve as executive producer), despite the director's initial hesitation of returning to the android theme.

It looks like the visually stunning and often confounding sci-fi drama “Raised by Wolves” is not returning for a third season, at least for the time being. Cast member Abubaker Salim recently announced the show’s fate on Twitter. He also revealed there’s still a glimmer of hope that it might find a new home after cancellation, as Scott Free Productions, the creative force behind the show, is shopping the series around for a potential third season. “I’m asking for action,” Salim declares, adding, “I see the pure love, passion and questions (too too many) that arise Daily on Twitter for Rbw. I’m now asking that you continue to, and with even more vigor, show that genuine love here, there, and everywhere as we search for that new home. Let’s give it a shot. Let’s give it our all.”

Another cancellation, another chance for fans to resuscitate a show from the dead.
That’s what’s happening to Raised By Wolves, the two-season sci-fi drama produced by Ridley Scott for HBO Max.

Ridley Scott’s “Raised by Wolves” has been canceled after two seasons at HBO Max, Variety has confirmed.
Originally ordered to series at WarnerMedia-owned cable channel TNT in 2018 before landing at HBO Max ahead of its series premiere in September 2020, the sci-fi drama centers on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences, the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task.

“One of the biggest things I’m proud of is the fact that it is so bold and daring. You rarely ever get shows which are so unapologetically bold,” reveals Abubakar Salim about the visually stunning and often confounding sci-fi drama “Raised by Wolves.” For our recent webchat he adds, “there is something to be said about the show where it doesn’t hand-hold the audience, it allows the audience to actually participate in it. There’s a lot of shows out there where you do feel like you can kind of switch off and watch, whereas with ‘Raised by Wolves,’ you can’t. I think to be a part of that is something that I’m super fortunate and really happy to be a part of.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Created by Aaron Guzikowski, "Raised by Wolves" is an unsettling science fiction series launched under the directorial eye of Ridley Scott — and with the notorious director of "Alien" involved, some body horror is inevitable.
In "Raised by Wolves," humanity leaves a ravaged Earth behind as warfare boils between the Atheists and the religious Mithraists. When two Atheist-programmed androids incubate and raise human children, their surviving son, and the Mithraic children kidnapped by Mother, divisions and resentments soon rise. Meanwhile, a mysterious and menacing force on Kepler-22B wreaks havoc and makes puppets of androids, Mithraists, Atheists, and agnostics alike.

Even in the era of CGI and StageCraft sets, everyone's favorite grouchy old man director, Ridley Scott, prefers to design alien worlds by shooting in real-world locations as much as possible. He filmed in Iceland and New Zealand to create the non-Earthly settings for his "Alien" movie prequels "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant," and similarly used Jordan's Wadi Rum (aka the Valley of the Moon) to realize the landscapes of Mars in "The Martian." On-location photography is also a key element of "Raised by Wolves," the Scott-produced sci-fi series that was created by "Prisoners" scribe Aaron Guzikowski and often feels like a spiritual continuation...

This article contains major spoilers for Raised by Wolves season 2.
The nice thing about tuning into a new episode of HBO Max’s gonzo sci-fi series Raised by Wolves is that you really have no reasonable expectation of what you’re about to watch.
Through two seasons the show created by Aaron Guzikowski has been set on an intensely alien world with all sorts of unfamiliar creatures, environments, and concepts. Just about every episode is as shocking as a series finale with installments this season alone featuring a merman-like sea creature that steals a teenage mother’s baby, a murderous android child with no face, and of course: a main character turning into a tree.
Still, season finales hold a special place in Raised by Wolves’ heart. Last season’s finale set a pretty bonkers precedent with lead android Lamia a.k.a. Mother (Amanda Collin) giving birth to her seventh child,...

On a lonely, fog-drenched mountaintop, as a flying snake the length of a train car circles a speargun-toting android, only one thought crossed my mind: Parenting is basically impossible.
Of course, today’s guardians are already well-aware. Having navigated nearly two years of a deadly pandemic, anyone in charge of a youngster under five is likely struggling to find sustainable childcare, while those responsible for adolescents old enough to get vaccinated still have to deal with added responsibilities like remote learning, breakthrough cases, and furious debates about every institutional policy decision that could affect their children’s lives. Some call these ongoing challenges “insurmountable.” Others can only find solace in primordial expulsions.
But for those parents with enough time for a TV break — and please, parents, take any reprieve you can — “Raised By Wolves” Season 2 offers an otherworldly remove from your worries and, quite possibly, catharsis to boot. The HBO...

Praise Sol! "Raised by Wolves" is back and weirder than ever, kicking off its second season with a bang. The series, created by Aaron Guzikowski and executive-produced Ridley Scott, follows a pair of androids and their human brood as they attempt to create a new colony on the planet Kepler-22b. The androids are Mother (Amanda Collin), a former Necromancer killer robot with new maternal programming, and Father (Abubakar Salim), a caregiver android who counters many of Mother's more murderous moods. They set out to create a colony and raise their human brood of children, but were thwarted at every turn by both the planet itself and another group...

One of the surprise series of 2020, HBO Max’s “Raised By Wolves” is finally returning for its second season. Created by Aaron Guzikowski, the first two episodes were directed by executive producer Ridley Scott who brought a stunning cinematic aesthetic to the proceedings. Scott, who has been a bit busy with two major film releases in the interim, wasn’t able to return for season two, but his fingerprints still resonate throughout the series.

HBO Max series Raised by Wolves has one of sci-fi television’s most compelling titles.
When it first premiered on WarnerMedia’s new streamer in 2020, the Ridley Scott-directed epic not only shared its name with a half-decent U2 song, but it also raised all sorts of interesting questions. Who are the wolves? Are they the androids dubbed Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) who are charged with keeping a small group of children safe on a foreign planet? Or are they the two warring factions – atheists and Mithraics – whose war stole a happy future from generations to come?
Also: is being raised by wolves even a bad thing? It certainly worked out decently for Romulus and Remus, the mythical siblings who suckled a she-wolf and founded Rome. Though perhaps that’s not the greatest example as Romulus and Remus factor prominently on Wikipedia’s “fratricide” page.

The Dark Universe, Universal’s would-be monster movie franchise, may have only fallen apart a scant four years ago with 2017’s The Mummy, but the mindset behind its conception now feels like a notion from a completely different age. That logic, of course, implied that lucrative, Marvel Cinematic Universe-like film franchises could be conjured from just about any intellectual property. Interestingly, one of the writers involved, Eric Heisserer, believes the Dark Universe imploded behind the scenes well before it did at the box office.
Heisserer, who’s serving as showrunner for franchise-aspiring Netflix television adaptation Shadow and Bone, had just broken big with his Oscar-nominated screenplay for 2016 sci-fi drama Arrival and horror film Lights Out when he was tapped to co-write (with Jon Spaihts) a Dark Universe reboot movie for vampire hunter Van Helsing, which Channing Tatum was expected to headline. It’s the 22nd century, and Earth has been destroyed by a religious-based war. The central plot of the recent HBO Max sci-fi program is the brainchild of several producers, including Aaron Guzikowski, who recently joined a Gold Derby Meet the Experts TV Showrunners panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Of his fellow producer, creator and directing legend Ridley Scott, he reveals, “It’s been quite a dream, actually; much more than I even could have hoped for. He’s become a mentor to me. He directed the first two episodes but has been intimately involved in the whole production… When it comes to story, he’ll defer to me in terms of the grand plan for the whole thing.
