- Made his international cricket debut in a one-day match against Pakistan at Mohali in April 1999.
- On 8 December 2011, he hit his maiden double century in ODI cricket, against West Indies, becoming the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the landmark. His score became the highest individual score in ODI cricket - 219 off 149 balls which was later bettered by Rohit Sharma - 264 off 173 balls on 13 November 2014.
- Sehwag retired from all forms of International cricket on 20 October 2015.
- In April 2009, Sehwag became only the third Indian after Kapil Dev in 1984 and Sachin Tendulkar in 1998 to be voted as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for his performance in 2008. However Sehwag was the first Indian to retain the title successively, accomplishing the feat in 2010.
- Sehwag holds multiple records including the highest score made by an Indian in Test cricket (319 against South Africa at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai), which was also the fastest triple century in the history of international cricket (reached 300 off only 278 balls) as well as the fastest 250 by any batsman (in 207 balls against Sri Lanka on 3 December 2009 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai).
- On 31 October 2017, Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) honoured Sehwag by naming Gate No.2 at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium after him.
- Was voted by ICC as the Test Player of the Year 2010.
- Recipient of the Arjuna Award in 2002.
- For his contribution to sports, the government of India bestowed upon him with its fourth highest civilian honour, Padma Shri, in 2010.
- Highest scorer for India in the finals of the 2003 World Cup against Australia at Johannesburg with 82 runs. Although India lost the final by 125 runs after being set a massive 360 to chase.
- Due to his similar build and limited footwork, he was once chronicled as a "poor man's Sachin Tendulkar". However, Sehwag with record breaking performances in the following years became an international cricket superstar in his own right.
- First Indian to hit a triple century in tests. He scored 309 against Pakistan at Multan in 2004.
