Now, life comes full circle as the pair of top 10 finalists become mentors themselves, joining a team of Idol insiders to coach the next generation of talented singers at “Audition Star,” a summer camp to be held June 25 through 29 at Atlantis, Paradise Island, the popular resort in the Bahamas. There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

There was a time when a Motown-themed evening was an "American Idol" institution. Kelly Clarkson delivered such a dizzying take on Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "You're All I Need to Get By" in season one that a bewildered Simon Cowell tried on a Southern accent and told her, "As they say in Texas, y'all did a great job!" Ruben Studdard soared with the Four Tops the next year, and then Fantasia, also trying on a Gaye tune, wowed the judges on her way to the title.
Future seasons would ditch Motown as a whole for specific artists like Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross, but there remains a vast trove of "Idol" history for singers to mine as both cautionary tales and I-hope-i-can-sound-so-damn-good aspirations.

Two months into its 10th season, "American Idol" is finally about to begin. This is the "Idol" we know (and sometimes love), and it'll be interesting to see how the reality of live TV affects the contestants as well as the judges.

So let’s just call this thing: Crystal killed it, and Lee kinda choked. Having discussed last night’s American Idol finale performance night with EW.com’s preeminent Idoloonie Michael Slezak, I know that was also his assessment of the evening from the vantage point of his living room couch. From my seat inside the IdolDeathStar — a.k.a. the Nokia Theater La Live — the difference between Crystal’s often effortless excellence and Lee’s unfocused striving was even more stark. I don’t think I’ve experienced an Idol finale, on TV or in person, this lopsidedly obvious...

Watching "Songs of the Cinema" night on "American Idol" was a lot like eating a large popcorn at the movies. Some of the kernels were close to perfect, with salty flavor and crispness balanced perfectly (Crystal). Others were stale, as if the concession workers had just dumped a new batch on top of one that had been sitting around since the theatrical run of "Kindergarten Cop" (Lee). And others were inexplicably soggy, which totally makes you gag 'cause Lord knows you didn't order any butter (Michael). (If Aaron was still on the show, I'd also talk about the kernels that were too young to pop.) And when the end credits rolled, you felt so bloated you regretted buying popcorn to begin with.

Outgoing American Idol contestant Tim Urban has been bigging up the former Idols stars who helped him on the show and in particular seemed impressed with the mentoring skills of last year’s runner up, Adam Lambert.
The Texan singer, who celebrates his 21st birthday this weekend told Ok that it had been “really cool” meeting some of the shows past stars. Allison Iraheta, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Matt Giraud, Scott MacIntyre, David Cook, Ruben Studdard, David Archuleta, Carrie Underwood, and Adam Lambert have all returned to perform on season nine of the show.
“The former Idols who have come back have been really cool and super friendly,” he said.
“They totally get where we are at. Adam Lambert was a great mentor. He had really great advice for the show having been on it before. It’s been really cool getting to meet them.”

Elton John took to the American Idol stage last night for the Idol Gives Back special and gave a truly inspirational performance of his classic track ‘Your Song.’
We loved the huge red grand piano he used and can’t hear this song without remembering that it was Elton’s pal Princess Diana’s favourite song….in fact at one point he even considered singing it at her funeral instead of ‘Candle In The Wind.’
Elton, whose last major television performance was a duet with Lady GaGa during the Grammys in February, gave his performance on behalf of ‘The Elton John Aids Foundation’ and Idol Gives Back bosses reported donations of more than $140 million (£87.5 million) in 2010 prior to the televised charity show.

Scott MacIntyre may not be getting much rest these days, but he sure is having fun. The American Idol (TV) Season 8 finalist is just back from Japan where he performed to sold out crowds, and is now promoting his new CD Heartstrings throughout the Us. The 24 year old musician, singer, and songwriter isn't letting any opportunites pass him by -- but then again, he never has. Scott has been one with music since the age of three when he began playing piano by ear. His ledger of personal and professional accomplishments is too long to list here, so we'll limit it to the fact that he travels with an impressive education in music, and he's written and produced eight CDs. Despite some tough challenges, Scott has emerged victorious and plans to strike some loud chords within the music industry. He has already begun by inspiring thousands, if not millions, of...

The next few months will see the releases of an array of inspirational books from singing competition contestants -- "American Idol" finalists Scott MacIntyre and David Archuleta and Susan Boyle of "Britain's Got Talent."
Scott MacIntyre tells Zap2it, "I actually have a book coming out later in the year, which I'm really really excited about ... I've been working on it for awhile and I just brought on a fabulous co-author that I will reveal at the proper time. I'm stoked about him, people are going to be very excited about the announcement. We have a couple publishers that are really wanting to get their hands on the book."
"It's going to be about my life ... 'Idol' in the context of why 'Idol' was so meaningful to me," Scott continues. "I really only told half my story on the show. The blindness was obvious, I didn't want to talk about...

Jason Castro of Season 7 of "American Idol" has found time between his self-titled debut album (out April 13) and kicking off his tour to watch some of the Season 10 Idols.
He tells Zap2it that Casey James "was amazing" on Beatles week. Jason has also "been a fan of Crystal Bowersox for awhile. And there's a couple other good people, but those two are my favorites right now."
We asked him what he thinks will happen once judge Simon Cowell leaves the show and Jason actually thinks the show will be okay. "You know, I don't think the show's ever been about [Simon Cowell] as much as it seems," Jason tells us. "He's an awesome personality and somebody we like to hear from, but the real magic of the show is the power of the fans to pick somebody out of nothing and create a career for them."

Tim Urban took to the American Idol stage last night to perform the classic Lennon/McCartney track ‘All My Lovin.’ Though there was no celebrity mentor this week, Sir Paul McCartney did record a video message wishing all the contestants good luck.
We were expecting Tim to suck a bit tonight and thought he would be leaving this week for sure, but the 20 year old Texas boy actually gave a decent performance and rocked the track up a little. We were pleasantly surprised and so apparently were the judging panel!
Judges Comments:
Randy Jackson said it was a good “Tim performance” adding that he liked his new Beatles hairdo.
Ellen DeGeneres said it was her second favourite performance of Tim’s after ‘Hallelujah’
Kara DioGuardi said she liked the fun he ahd with the song and also the fact that he is taking some of their past comments on song choice seriously.

What's a didgeridoo? Crystal Bowersox showed one off during her "American Idol" Beatles week performance of "Come Together."
A didgeridoo is defined as "a musical instrument of Australian Aborigines made from a long wooden tube that is blown into to create a low drone."
Crystal Bowersox and Rickey Minor and the band managed to find a didgeridoo for Crystal's performance of "Come Together." You mean the band didn't just have a didgeridoo player on hand? What?!
Turns out the didgeridoo player is a freelancer named Ernie. Just how does one get into freelance didgeridoo playing? We have no idea. It certainly added an eclectic element to Crystal's performance, but we still thought this was one of her weaker offerings on the show. What do you think?

All of the "American Idol" alums, who have made their return to the show, only got the chance to perform, but Adam Lambert has agreed to do something extra. The singer who lost the "Idol" title to Kris Allen on season 8 will make an appearance next Tuesday, April 13 as a guest mentor for the top 8 contestants.
Soon after an email from Sony Music about the matter leaked out, Adam took it to his Twitter page to confirm the news himself. "It's true! In addition to performing on Idol April 14th, I will be mentoring the top 8 on the 13th," he tweeted. "I feel honored to be asked." He is expected to sing single "Whataya Want from Me" during his result show performance.
In a following tweet, the 28-year-old said, "Even though I'm just at the start of my recording career, I hope to lend some insight as one who's been thru the Idol adventure.

Katie Stevens gave her best performance to date on "Let It Be" during Beatles week on "American Idol."
The judges keep trying to stuff her into the "young" box. Young and current are not synonymous. Katie's "Let It Be" sounded like it came from a seasoned performer and we mean that in a good way. It was emotional, with lilting higher notes that were gorgeous and pure. It was her best performance yet on the show and while it sounded current, it certainly didn't sound young.
The way she changed the melody was a masterclass in how to take a classic song and make it your own without completely destroying what people liked about it in the first place. Also, she wasn't "country" at all, as Simon Cowell tried to say. Was that his giant ego just trying to take credit for her success? Because that was Kara's pop-r&B all the way.

Did you miss Michael Lynche's smooth spin on "Eleanor Rigby" during the "American Idol" Top 9?
We've got you covered. The judges were split -- Simon Cowell compared it to something you'd see in a musical, which is pretty confounding to us.
It sounded like an R&B song, not like something out of "Oklahoma." Randy then got off on a weird "Glee" tangent and Kara and Ellen could only sit there and shake their heads.
For our part, we liked it. It wasn't Big Mike's best performance to date but it was solid. And it was the most interesting take we've heard on that song, to be sure. What do you guys think? Was it good enough to keep Mike in the competition?
Also, the mentor next week is Adam Lambert. Could the theme be something more rock-y and if so, will Mike rock the house or will he...

"American Idol" finalist Kimberley Locke's new single "Strobelight" drops Tuesday, April 6. She tells Zap2it about working on her first release in several years and what it's like to partner with judge Randy Jackson outside of "Idol."
Let's talk about "Strobelight." It's got a great disco sound.
Kimberley: That's exactly what we're going for! When Randy and I first started talking about the project, he asked me who my fans were and I said I have dance records, so he said it seems like a no-brainer to do that. It's exciting for me to come out of the gate with a dance song. "8th World Wonder," "Band of Gold" were both remixed as dance songs but "Strobelight" is straight out of the gate as a dance song, no remix. So anything we do to it is just going to make it better.
Is there an album in the works?...

On tonight’s Over The Rainbow, former page three girl Amy Diamond chose to sing Fergie’s Big Girls Don’t Cry. It wasn’t a perfect vocal and we think that her backing vocals may have been more prominent than the rest. We don’t see Amy as Dorothy and can’t help thinking that she’s only on the show to generate some headlines!
Danielle Hope was up next (check out the video below) and sang Daniel Merriweather’s Red. It’s an excellent power ballad and though Danielle may have oversang it a tiny bit, we did enjoy her performance.
Judges Comments:
Shiela: Amy is a fantastic performer. Very attractive. What worries me is that Dorothy is a girl who looks at things straight in the eye. She never uses guile, she never uses girliness. If she did, the relationship with the Wizard and the three men...

Kimberley Locke's new single "Strobelight" debuts Tuesday, April 6 but she's still found time to check in with "American Idol" this season. She tells Zap2it what she thinks of the judges since her days on the show.
Kimberley on Kara DioGuardi:
Kara has grown on me. In the beginning, I wasn't so sure how I felt about her. She comes from a different aspect of the business, which is from the writing side. You can tell in her comments to the contestants that that's the world she comes from. I think that's an important part of the panel. When she talks about why people write songs and connect with songs, it's important the contestants know that and hear that. They need to understand that a song was written from a place, whether it was a place of pain or happiness, and they are there to deliver it. When...

Former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard returned to the show last night and gave an amazing performance of “Don’t Make ‘Em Like U No More”.
The ‘Velvet Teddybear’ showed Michael Lynche just how it should be done when he sang his newest single from his fourth album. Talk about a contrast with Usher and will.i.am, who also sang on the show. Ruben’s vocals were astounding and tuneful and he really owned that stage.

"American Idol" finalist Didi Benami might be pretty broken hearted after her Top 10 performance.
The 1966 hit by Jimmy Ruffin was, ahem, pretty rough for Didi Benami. It didn't suit her voice one bit and while we admire her choosing something that means something to her, she should probably pack her bags.

What did you guys think? Will Didi stick around? There were other not-so-hot performances but we think Didi really took the cake tonight. Plus, the voters were probably too blinded by her sparkly dress to read her phone number off the screen.

In between cutting a new single "Strobelight" (due out April 6), "American Idol" Season 2 finalist Kimberley Locke has found some time to watch the Season 9 Idols.
Kimberley tells Zap2it, "Big Mike is my favorite. He's like a seasoned performer. Watching him is like watching somebody who's been doing it for 20 years ... I got the opportunity to talk to him and he is the most gentle soul and just the sweetest person."
We shared with Kimberley that when we met Michael Lynche at the Top 12 party, he immediately gave us a big hug even though we had never met before and she laughs, "Yes! He's so genuine and he genuinely loves music ... I've never seen a man who loves his wife so much. And he gets that there has to be a connection between the music and the fans out there. He puts so much into his performances."
So are there any others Idols Kimberley favors?...
