“Barren Land,” from Spain’s Albert Pintó, director of Netflix global blockbusters “Money Heist,” “Berlin” and “Nowhere,” have been snapped up by Spain’s Film Factory Entertainment.
From an original idea by producer Alvaro Ariza, “Barren Land” (“Tierra de Nadie”) is penned by Fernando Navarro, one of Spain’s go-to screenwriters whose credits include Netflix hits “Below Zero” and “Veronica.”
Film Factory will launch world sales on “Barren Land,” as it builds a powerful slate of upscale commercial packages. Sony Pictures Entertainment Iberia will release the film in Spain next year.
Now with principal photography underway in Cadiz, southern Spain, the suspense thriller captures the devastation of friendships, lives and the whole province by a rampant drug trade, action also expanding to the Straits of Gibraltar.

Isaki Lacuesta has returned to the Malaga Film Festival with his highly anticipated rock band drama “Saturn Return” (“Segundo Premio”), a fabled account of iconic Spanish group Los Planetas and their struggle to make their legendary third album,“Una semana en un motor de un autobús.”
The film, which the award-winning filmmaker directed with Pol Rodríguez and wrote with Fernando Navarro, stars Daniel Ibáñez, Stéphanie Magnin and musician-turned-actor Cristalino.
“Saturn Returns” screened in competition in Malaga, where Lacuesta and Isa Campo, double San Sebastian Golden Shell winners, won the best director Silver Biznaga for their 2016 mystery drama “The Next Skin.”
Speaking to Variety, Lacuesta explains how the film is not about Los Planetas but rather about the legend of the band and the mystique they themselves have cultivated over the years. Indeed, the story of “Saturn Return” is largely based on the band’s songs.

Three years ago, we heard that genre regular Álex de la Iglesia – whose credits include creating the HBO horror series 30 Coins – had signed a deal with Amazon Prime Video and Sony Pictures International Productions to produce a series of feature-length horror films under the banner of The Fear Collection. It was said that de la Iglesia would be directing part of the collection and the entries not directed by him would still be “made under his creative influence”. The collection has turned out to consist of de la Iglesia’s own Veneciafrenia, Jaume Balaguero’s Venus, and Paco Plaza’s La Abuela – and all three films are now available on VOD, including on Amazon’s Prime Video!
De la Iglesia, who made his feature directorial debut with Accion Mutante in 1993, directed Veneciafrenia (watch it Here) from a screenplay he wrote with Jorge Guerricaechevarría. This one explores the profound connection...

Madrid-based Latido Films has snagged international sales rights to Isaki Lacuesta’s “Saturn Return” (“Segundo premio”) and plans to kick off pre-sales at the Cannes market.
Currently shooting in Granada, the musical drama is set during the ‘90s when the Andalusian city was ground zero for an outburst of cultural effervescence, with the pioneering rock band Los Planetas at the center of it. The film focuses on the creative process behind the recording of their iconic third album, which also took them to New York.
Latido likens “Saturn Return” to “24 Hour Party People,” the 2002 British biographical dramedy about Manchester’s influential music scene, which spawned such bands as Factory Records’ Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays.
Based on a script by Fernando Navarro, the writer behind one of Netflix’s most viewed Spanish-language movies, “Below Zero,” the story is set at a time when the group was at its most fraught-ridden moments,...

CBS Studios has expanded its international co-production slate to include projects in Australia, Spain and France. These productions include “Gold Diggers” from Australia, and “Electric Years” from Spain and France.
“Gold Diggers” is produced by CBS Studios with The Alliance (a Stampede Ventures and Kojo Studios joint venture) for The ABC in Australia. It is set in 1850s Gold Rush, Australia. Thousands of men from around the world flock to the country to hit the jackpot, and so do two women in search of their own jackpot: newly rich idiots. Gert, a heavy-drinking sociopath, and Marigold, her virginal, dummy sister, are willing to do anything to get their fortune; but first they must suffer the lads, lice and lechery of outback Australia. Jack Yabsley serves as writer.
While hiding near the French/Spanish border, Campano, a mysterious wanderer and fugitive on the run, turns a group of artists into sophisticated art thieves.

The Spanish action thriller Below Zero (Bajocero in Spanish) is an old-school, uncomplicated mix of suspense and violence that avoids too much focus on details or subtexts. The idea works in a way. You get taut drama that runs for little over a hundred minutes, mostly sticking to the singular intent of delivering thrills.
The tension starts pretty much with scene one, even as the opening credits begin. A man whose face we do not see is chasing a heavily wounded youngster down nowhere in dead of the night. The victim has clearly been tortured and can't walk straight, the attacker wants information on the whereabouts of someone he simply refers to as "she". The bloodied youngster insists he has no clue.
The sequence ends on an ominous, if predictable, note, laying backdrop for the film's story to take off.
Quite simply, it isn't much of a story. It doesn't...

ViacomCBS International Studios (Vis) president Jc Acosta has used his virtual NATPE address to unveil the studio’s latest slate of content, spanning high-end drama series, TV movies, documentaries, and kids content.
Among the more eye-catching content announced by Jc Acosta was an action heist series, titled Electric Years, which Vis is co-producing with CBS Studios and LatAm production outfit Dynamo.
Created by Fernando Navarro (Veronica) and Cristian Conti (Wild District), the show is set in Europe during the Spring of 1968 throughout the student revolution. At the center of it all is Campano, a wanderer, daredevil, and an unlikely, anachronistic hero who journeys across the Mediterranean.
Acosta also pulled the curtain back on another development: The Gold. Written by Neil Forsyth, the screenwriter behind BBC series Guilt, the true-crime series tells the story of one of Britain’s most notorious criminal investigations.

Launched in 2018, Vis has proved one of the fastest-growing production powers on the Latin American and Latinx scene, signing first-look deals with Argentina’s Juan José Campanella, writer-director of the Oscar winning “The Secret in Their Eyes,” and Ariel Winograd, director of remake phenomenon “Ten Days Without Mom.

Jaume Balagueró is without a doubt one of Sitges' classic directors. Every new project of his is welcomed with a special interest by the festival's audiences, which probably still remember with excitement the screenings of the first chapter of his Rec. saga. And now, three years after bringing the zombie saga to a closure with REC4, Balagueró returns to Sitges once again to present Muse. The story goes that the police were dispatched to a Madrid residence in June of 1991 only to find a teenage girl screaming from what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds. Strange phenomena was seen/found throughout the apartment, so much that the detective assigned the case could do nothing but corroborate the paranormal explanation being delivered by those close to the family. Everything supposedly stemmed from a seancé gone wrong three days earlier at the exact time of a solar eclipse. The teen hoped to contact her father only to discover it was something else that responded. A wild story to be sure, the simple fact it proved the first recorded account of the supernatural by a police officer in Spain made it worth a closer look.

Spain might be very well-known for its fantasy and horror films, but it has also proven that it can master thrillers. In 2014, Alberto Rodríguez' Marshland was (almost) everyone's favorite after its premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival and ended up scooping 10 Goyas. Looking at its thrilling trailer, Toro might follow a similar path. Shot in the legendary region of Almería, Toro is the sophomore feature film by Kike Maíllo, whose first effort was the very promising robot drama Eva (2011). The script is co-written by Fernando Navarro (Anacleto: Agente secreto) and Rafael Cobos, who penned Marshland along with its director. Here's a synopsis: Toro is completing a two-year sentence in prison for a robbery where he seriously wounded a police officer, a...

Jaume Balagueró is turning to an English-language Muse. That's the title of the next supernatural thriller from the director of the exquisitely good Sleep Tight (Mientras duermes) and the recently-arrived [Rec] 4: Apocalypse. Before the success of the first [Rec] installment, however, Balagueró made a name for himself with The Nameless (Los sin nombre) and then tried his hand at an English-language thriller with Darkness, released in the U.S. at the tail end of 2004. My memory of that picture, starring a very young Anna Paquin, is that it was a slow-burn, atmospheric and haunted piece, much like The Nameless. He co-wrote Muse with Fernando Navarro. Per the announcement in Variety, the synopsis goes like this: Muse turns on Salomon, who has been off work since the tragic death...

Despite being a part of one of the most disappointing films of 2011, actor Oscar Isaac's career is undoubtedly on the rise. Presently he's playing the title character of the Coen Bros' in-production period piece Inside Llewyn Davis, and according to Variety, next up for the Guatemala-born performer is another headlining role, this one from Spanish director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego (Apollo 18).
