It's now been over 5 years since Marvel Studios last released an Avengers movie. While Covid and last year's strikes have to take some of the blame, it's fair to say the McU's heroes should have re-assembled by now.
As we write this, Avengers 5 (previously titled The Kang Dynasty) is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow on May 7, 2027.
With Disney CEO Bob Iger pushing for Marvel Studios to get back top quality over quantity, there are concerns that there's no longer enough time to effectively build to the stories which need to be told in those movies. Then, there's the fact the Multiverse Saga's new big bad, Kang, is reportedly being sidelined.

Among Marvel Studios’ upcoming releases, the ‘Avengers’ series stands out as the most anticipated. With two new installments in development, the journey to the fifth film has been eventful. Following Jonathan Majors’ dismissal in December due to allegations of third-degree assault against his former partner, the film’s direction has become uncertain.
Internally, the title shifted from ‘Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avengers 5,’ leaving doubts about Kang’s role as the main antagonist. To provide clarity amidst the confusion, we’ve crafted this guide to consolidate all current information about the movie.
Much of the plot remains shrouded in mystery
‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ was intended to debut Kang the Conqueror into the MCU and position him as the primary antagonist for the forthcoming phases, akin to Thanos.
However, shortly after the release of Quantumania, Majors was terminated by the studio. Presently, it’s uncertain whether Kang the Conqueror remains...

Out of all the movies on Marvel Studios’ release schedule, the ‘Avengers’ franchise is undoubtedly the most exciting one. We know that two new ‘Avengers’ movies are in development, and when it comes to the fifth installment in the franchise, we’ve been through a lot in the last few months.
Majors’ was fired back in December after being found guilty of third-degree assault against his former girlfriend, and since then, the direction of the movie is confusing, to say the least. The movie internally changed its name from ‘Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avenger 5,’ and we can’t even be sure that Kang is the main villain still. This is why, we decided to compile this guide, to quickly and efficiently summarize everything we know about the movie so far.

Rick and Morty Changed Marvel’s MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been changed fundamentally, and it’s not because of what you might think…
In the years since the release of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been struggling. Unimpressive box office performance and lukewarm critical and fan response have plagued the superhero franchise that used to be one of the most reliable in cinema. But who’s to blame?
It might be Rick and Morty.
For a show on Adult Swim that started as a Back to the Future parody, Rick and Morty has had a shocking cultural impact. When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the show has had a massive influence on...

Avengers 5 was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, only for the movie to lose that shortly after Marvel Studios decided to take the focus off Kang the Conqueror (a result of the mixed response to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Jonathan Majors' legal troubles).
However, a new actor is expected to play a Kang Variant who will still be the Multiverse Saga's main threat. Meanwhile, Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron is overhauling Avengers 5's script after Jeff Loveness first took a crack at it.
He was supposedly fired from the project shortly after the Ant-Man threequel flopped, while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton has moved on to Wonder Man and the Shang-Chi sequel.
Today, we have a small but potentially significant update from the Film & Television Industry Alliance (a company "dedicated to providing...

“The mutants are coming. The bell has been rung.” – Yes, that famous dialogue from Batman V Superman has been modified, but it perfectly fits with what Deadpool & Wolverine is about to bring to the theatres. The Deadpool threequel will officially introduce mutants in the MCU’s continuity, and the X-Men fans can’t be more hyped!
Storm in X-Men ’97
As soon as it was confirmed that the mutants were coming to the main timeline, fans began looking up at the possible casting choices for their favorite X-Men. And one of the most popular X-Men characters is Storm aka Ororo Munroe, who happens to be one of their strongest heroes.
Deadpool 3 will be bringing back a number of mutants from the Fox movies, and it is more than likely that Marvel will reboot the older continuity and introduce younger actors as the quintessential X-Men after that. And we have...

Of all the Marvel Studios movies coming up, the ‘Avengers’ series is the big one everyone’s buzzing about. With two new ‘Avengers’ flicks on the way, the fifth installment has had its fair share of drama lately.
Majors got the boot in December due to assault charges from his ex, and now, things are up in the air. The movie’s name switched from ‘Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avenger 5,’ and we’re not even sure if Kang’s still the bad guy.
Jeff Sneider dropped some new info, or maybe just rumors, on us. On his latest Hot Mic show, he said the studio’s hunting for a fresh director who’s never directed a Marvel flick before, showing they’re considering all options. He also says his sources claim that the movie’s set to kick off filming early next year.
The movie’s journey has been a rollercoaster.

Michael Douglas wanted to have a “serious” death scene in 2023’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and requested his character be killed off.
As the actor promoted his Apple TV+ series Franklin, Douglas opened up about the Marvel film in which he played Dr. Hank Pym. Ahead of the third film in the Ant-Man saga, the actor said he asked for his character to die.
“This actually was my request for the third one,” Douglas said on The View. “I said I’d like to have a serious [death], with all these great special effects. There’s got to be some fantastic way where I can shrink to an ant size and explode, whatever it is. I want to use all those effects.”
He continued, “But, that was on the last one. Now, I don’t think I’m going to show up.”

Marvel Studios has a lineup of movies slated for release in the coming years. However, many of these projects faced delays or changes in release dates due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and various controversies and issues needing resolution. Among the most anticipated movies are continuations of the ‘Avengers’ franchise, which has been the subject of much discussion in recent months.
On June 13, 2023, a film initially set for an unspecified release date was pushed back to May 1, 2026. Then, on November 15, 2023, Deadline reported that Destin Daniel Cretton, the original director, had stepped down from the project to focus on directing ‘Shang-Chi 2’ instead. Additionally, on November 27, 2023, it was announced that Michael Waldron had replaced Jeff Loveness as the scriptwriter.
At that time, it was anticipated that filming for the upcoming ‘Avengers’ movie would start in late 2024 in the UK. However, according to Alex Perez, a prominent leaker and industry insider, filming is now...

Avengers 5: Fans Are Worried That MCU is Moving on From Recasting Kang After Jonathan Majors’ Firing
The MCU found themselves in a curveball following Jonathan Majors’ conviction, jeoparding their plans for the multiversal story surrounding Kang. While Marvel’s initial plans regarding the multiversal saga involved building Kang the Conqueror as the next big thing since Thanos, it appears they’re finally abandoning the storyline.
Confirming a February report, Disney revealed that the next Avengers entry will not be titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in the company’s latest investors’ presentation. But fans are left conflicted about the change, as it appears the industry giant is moving on from Kang altogether.

Dan Harmon has established a pretty neat little entertainment empire, creating the beloved cult hit "Community" before co-creating "Rick and Morty" and overseeing Apple TV+'s "Strange Planet" and Fox's "Krapopolis." But it's been a rocky road to success for Harmon, who was previously kicked off his own show before being rehired, and in 2018 had to publicly apologize for his prior mistreatment of "Community" writer Megan Ganz — and those are just a couple of examples of the man's controversies. Despite these debacles, however, Harmon has been an entertainment mainstay for well over a decade at this point, and during that time he's not only managed to create several of his own successful shows, but he's also apparently been fairly influential in perhaps the biggest Hollywood success story of the modern era: the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios has been facing many difficulties with its next “Avengers” installment following the departure of director Destin Daniel Cretton, who left to focus on other Marvel projects (“Wonder Man” and the “Shang Chi” sequel). Screenwriter Jeff Loveness exited as well, but none of that really compares to the firing of Jonathan Majors, who was set to play the film’s villain, Kang The Conqueror, and let go after he was convicted in connection to a violent altercation with his ex-girlfriend (now awaiting sentencing that will be handed down in April).

For much of the last year, the question has hung in the air around what Marvel is going to do with Kang. First, Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania underperformed significantly, intended to be the Multiverse Saga uber-villain’s big launch on the world. Then, months after allegations were made against him, actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty of assault in December, at which point he was dropped by the studio. In the wake of all that, Marvel Studios is said to be retooling its plans for the future – plans which originally had the next Avengers movie down as The Kang Dynasty.
According to a new THR report, Marvel is said to be dropping the name The Kang Dynasty for Avengers 5, a move which is said to be a reflection of both Majors’ removal from the role, and the underwhelming reaction to Quantumania. Peyton Reed's 2023 superhero film "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" saw the title heroes (Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly), and a few compatriots, using an extraordinary sci-fi device to shrink down so infinitesimally small they enter a microscopic dimension called the Quantum Realm. In the Quantum Realm, they find a whole civilization of bizarre humanoid and non-humanoid creatures, as well as the evil rising empire of a villainous tyrant named Kang (the recently-fired Jonathan Majors). Kang had been imprisoned in the Quantum Realm, and if he can escape, he would cause mayhem in the normal-sized world. "Quantumania" was expensive to make and wasn't terribly well-received, marking a definite downturn in the seemingly unending success of the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The rumours have proved to be true and Loki scribe Michael Waldron has been named as the new writer on the next Avengers movie.
A couple of weeks ago we covered a story that reported that Destin Daniel Cretton had exited the director’s chair of Marvel Studio’s upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Following the film being pushed back by a year into 2026, the Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings director left the role, probably because he has other Marvel commitments including a Shang-Chi sequel and directing and executive producing duties on the Wonder Man TV show.
When that story was circulating, The Ringer's Joanna Robinson, author of the recently-released book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, (well worth a read by the way) offered an additional take: the film’s writer, Jeff Loveness, wouldn’t be staying on the project either given that it was looking...

Michael Waldron is having a good day. According to Deadline, the screenwriter is now set to write Marvel Studios' "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty." Waldron, of course, is currently also set to write the script for "Avengers: Secret Wars," the sequel to "The Kang Dynasty." That movie will mark the grand finale of the current Multiverse Saga that connects Phases 4, 5, and 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Waldron will be replacing Jeff Loveness, who was assumed to have left the project as Destin Daniel Cretton ("Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings") departed as a director earlier this month. As of now, neither of these next two "Avengers" movies has a director yet, but having Waldron on board to write both does seem like a smart choice to give them a more cohesive tone and structure.

Marvel Studios is moving fast to find a new variant on its script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Marvel mainstay Michael Waldron will tackle Kang Dynasty, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The hiring cements Waldron as a key architect of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, its sprawling story told across multiple realities in film and TV. Waldron entered the Marvel fold as the creator of Loki, and went on to write Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He is also the scribe behind Avengers: Secret Wars, which will follow Kang Dynasty. Kang is due out May 1, 2026, while Secret Wars has a release date of May 7, 2027.
The move follows the exit of director Destin Daniel Cretton, who remains in the Marvel fold on the TV show Wonder Man as well as with his upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sequel.

Destin Daniel Cretton has reportedly left Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. If the rumours are true, that’s just one major change that might trigger several more.
Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton has reportedly walked away from directing Marvel Studio’s flagship project, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
The film was originally slated for a May 2025 release but was pushed back a year amid the turbulence caused by the strike action that have dominated Hollywood of late. Cretton has been attached to the project for a year already, so it’s a bit of a setback for the project.
Although he’s stepped away from The Kang Dynasty, it’s unclear how long the film will even bear that title given that the actor who plays Kang, Jonathan Majors, has found himself in worsening legal troubles of late.

Like the multiverse convulsing, there are changes afoot on the Marvel movie front. :a[Deadline reports]{href='https://deadline.com/2023/11/marvel-destin-daniel-cretton-avengers-kang-dynasty-exits-1235612901/' } (since confirmed by other sources) that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is no longer attached to make Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. It marks just the latest shift for the next iteration of the Avengers cycle, since it has already seen a year-long release date push and other potential shifts.
There is definite rumblings that Marvel as a whole is looking to pivot away from the idea of the Kang character as a whole given actor Jonathan Majors' legal issues. Sometimes, you have too many irons in the fire and must take one out and let it cool. According to Deadline, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is no longer helming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty for Marvel Studios. Deadline says they hear Cretton’s exit is amicable, with the in-demand filmmaker remaining in the Marvel family for Wonder Man and Shang-Chi 2. Thankfully, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is years away from hitting theaters, giving Marvel ample time to reassign the Infinity War-level project to another director. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty releases on May 1, 2026, setting up Avengers: Secret Wars for May 7, 2027. The two event-driven films end the MCU’s Phase 6 timeline.

One of the biggest upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe projects was just hit by a major setback. Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," has officially exited the director's chair for the upcoming film. Cretton was previously announced as the director of the film last summer, but now, more than a year later, the director's chair is empty once again.
According to Deadline, Marvel Studios and Cretton agreed to a mutual parting of ways with "The Kang Dynasty." The movie is still nearly three years away (assuming it sticks to its current release date) and things feel pretty uncertain with the project right now. As a result, Cretton will focus his attention elsewhere and the studio will, presumably, look for another director to fill the void when the time comes. This follows recent reports that Jeff Loveness ("Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania") is also...

Destin Daniel Cretton is no longer taking a trip to the multiverse as director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Cretton had been attached since last year, with the news announced on the heels of San Diego Comic-Con.

For the first three phases, the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to be bulletproof. Even when a wrench was thrown into the machine, and Marvel Studios had to recast for someone like Edward Norton or replace a director like Edgar Wright, Kevin Feige’s ultimate vision would keep the train from derailing. The studio’s bubble is currently expanding to the point that many feel it will burst from the tension. One of the biggest hurdles going forward is how the studio plans to handle actor Jonathan Majors in his role as Kang the Conqueror. Majors’ ongoing controversy and a lingering trial, which will either convict or release the actor of domestic abuse charges, is casting an unforeseen shadow on the future of the multiverse era.

The second season of Loki proved to be a wonderful addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and one of the biggest highlights (at least for me) was Ke Huy Quan as Ouroboros, the Time Variance Authority’s resident tech expert. From the sounds of things, no one loved the character more than Quan himself.
“Well, first of all, when I read the script, I instantly fell in love with Ouroboros,” Quan told Deadline. “It was so well defined on the pages, and I can see him right away. This character was not based on comic books, so it was created by our showrunner Kevin Wright and our head writer Eric Martin… I instantly wanted to play him.” After the success of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Quan got a call from his agent telling him that he would be getting a call from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the...

A new report claimed that Marvel Studios changed the initial plans to have Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness write the script of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Loveness' involvement with Avengers 5 was first reported in September 2022 when it was reported that he was tapped to pen the film's script. The Rick & Morty scribe was clearly excited about his hiring, often taking to social media in the weeks after to joke about his gig.
In April 2023, Loveness admitted that "it’s almost comedic how hard" the challenge is to put together the film that will follow up Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

As we already know, all movie and television productions are currently on hold due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood. There’s no telling how long those strikes will last, but it’s safe to say that many movies will face delays in productions and, therefore, in release dates as well. That situation is pretty complicated when it comes to the MCU schedule since we know that the majority of those projects are entangled together, meaning that only one delay can create a domino effect.
Still, Marvel Studios announced many projects for us to look forward to, particularly at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where the boss Kevin Feige officially announced ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ the fifth and sixth ‘Avengers’ movies, which will serve as the culmination of the Multiverse saga the same way ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ culminated the Infinity Saga.

Abby Ryder Fortson's Cassie Lang is one of the best parts of Peyton Reed's first two "Ant-Man" films. 2015's "Ant-Man" introduces Cassie as an eight-year-old ball of energy who sees nothing but the best in her father, Paul Rudd's Scott Lang, even when the rest of the world dismisses him as an ex-con. She's also weird in a way that rings believable for a kid, nerding out over the "ugly" bunny doll Scott gifts her on her birthday.
The next time we see Cassie in 2018's "Ant-Man and the Wasp," she's grown up enough to have some thoughts on her dad's quasi-romantic relationship with his work buddy, Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne, but not so much as to strain credibility. These scenes rely heavily on Rudd and Fortson to work. Fortunately, their strong chemistry is more than enough to fully sell this father-daughter dynamic despite limited screen time.

Keep spinning those discs.

Ant-Man and the Wasp return for a second sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, a new adventure that’s designed to kick off the next phase of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). As such, it’s a visually inventive, comics-inspired tale that properly introduces a major new villain and delivers action, humour and emotion in the mighty Marvel manner.
Directed once again by Peyton Reed (who helmed both previous Ant-Man movies), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania picks up some time after the events of Avengers: Endgame. While enjoying his new-found life as a hero, Scott reconnects with his now teenage daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton), only to discover that she has made contact with microscopic universe the Quantum Realm, where Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) was once trapped.

We’re shrinking down once again, and as Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania comes to streaming, it’s time to look back at the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s divisive Phase 5 debut. Paul Rudd’s pint-sized hero joins Og Avengers Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor in the exclusive trilogy club, while boosting the Multiverse Saga forward.
Despite Quantumania putting the pieces in place for the franchise-shattering Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), some argue you could’ve skipped the end without missing much – apart from Modok’s CGI butt. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has definitely taken some chances over the years by embracing some of the more cosmic, psychedelic aspects of the comic books that Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and others made famous. James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" managed to turn a sentient alien tree and a gun-toting talking raccoon into pop culture sensations, and the sequel featured a cameo by the Watchers -- the egg-headed omnipotent beings that quietly observe all the past, present and future events in the universe. Still, perhaps no MCU project to date has gone into weirder territory than Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania," a movie that featured the microscopic Quantum Realm, an infinite amount of Kangs as the villain(s), an unsettling depiction of fan favorite sidekick M.O.D.O.K., and a gelatinous pink blob named Veb (voiced by David Dastmalchian).

Jonathan Majors isn’t letting the negative “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” reviews get to him.
The actor, who stars as supervillain Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel picture, which has a 48% approval among Rotten Tomatoes critics, seemed to brush off the unfavourable critiques, saying that they don’t “change how I see myself, period,” while appearing on IndieWire‘s “Screen Talk” podcast on Friday.
“I’m a performance within a story,” Majors said. “One thing I will say to my team as we’re leaving a premiere as they’re reading reviews — I just keep saying ‘How’s the movie doing? How’s the movie doing?'”

“I try to clean my plate and take care of my part,” he continued. “The response is: ‘You’re straight. You’re good. They like you.

Upon its release, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania became one of the worst-reviewed Marvel Cinematic Universe movies on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews aren’t everything, but it’s not a great start to Marvel’s new phase. While critics took issue with many elements in Quantumania, most had plenty of praise for Jonathan Majors. The actor plays Kang the Conqueror, who is destined to be the big bad of the Multiverse Saga.
While speaking on IndieWire’s Screen Talk podcast, Jonathan Majors doesn’t seem bothered by the bad reviews which Quantumania has received. “It doesn’t change how I see myself, period. It’s all data,” Majors said. “I’m a performance within a story. One thing I will say to my team as we’re leaving a premiere if they’re reading reviews, I’ll say, ‘How’s the movie doing?’ I try to clean my plate and take care of my part.
