"You're not going anywhere in this stolen van!" 1091 Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie coming-of-age comedy titled Paulie Go!, arriving on VOD later this month to watch. The film is premiering at the upcoming 2022 Minneapolis–Saint Paul Film Festival, just before it opens. A young AI prodigy gets rejected from a world-renowned robotics lab and does what any rational teenager would do - steal a van and drive across the country to Northern Minnesota to track down the Professor who rejected him. Along the way he meets a girl named Avery, an expert angler who joins him on his journey up the rivers. The film stars Ethan Dizon as Paulie, who made his debut in the director's very first feature 4th Man Out. The cast also includes Madison Wolfe, Bernard White, David Theune, Corinne Chooey, and Tracie Thoms. This looks a bit too over-the-top kooky in a few scenes,...

On the cusp of summer, Mister (Skylan Brooks) has just found out that he will have to repeat the eighth grade, but he isn’t too concerned. Mister has big plans ahead, bigger than his junkie mother (Jennifer Hudson) who makes ends meet as a prostitute, and bigger than the neighborhood pimp and pusher Kris (Anthony Mackie). He wants to be an actor on a TV show and move into an enormous mansion in Beverly Hills, and he sees a TV audition scheduled for the end of the summer as his golden ticket out of poverty. Everything changes when his mother is arrested, and he hides out from child services with Pete (Ethan Dizon), another kid from his building whose mother was also arrested in a neighborhood sweep. There’s no doubt that Jason Bateman’s Bad Words is set to be one of the best comedies of the year, getting its debut out in Toronto last year to glowing early reviews.
The R-rated comedy launched a suitably red-band first trailer last year, followed more recently by a new trailer and poster this month. And with its release just a few weeks away, Focus Features have launched the red-band first clip, focusing on Bateman’s character’s winning word to great comedic effect.
Guy Trilby is a 40-year-old man seeking catharsis in his life. He seizes the ideal that this will come for him through the National Spelling Bee; after discovering a loophole in the rules, Guy zealously joins the competition and easily outpaces the pre-teen field in match after match. As reporter Jenny Widgeon delves into Guy’s story, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely friendship with a competitor,...

After years playing the nice guy, or at least the nice guy on the surface, Jason Bateman is about to get mean. The actor made his feature directorial debut at Tiff last year with Bad Words, and following a brilliant reception amongst audiences, the film will be heading into cinemas stateside in the spring.
The red-band first trailer was easily one of the best trailers of the year. And after launching a new trailer earlier in the month, Focus has debuted the first poster over on Yahoo Movies, which doesn’t leave much to the imagination as to what Bateman’s Guy Trilby is about to say, with a great little Machiavellian tagline to boot.

After years of working in front of the camera, and helming the occasional episode on TV behind it, Jason Bateman has finally made his feature directorial debut with Bad Words, bringing it to Tiff this year for its world premiere.
The comedy earned great praise amongst critics, with Batman’s character, Guy Trilby, noted as perhaps the meanest he’s ever played, and that is definitely something to look forward to.
Focus Features picked it up coming out of Toronto, and with a Spring 2014 release date now in place, the studio has debuted the first red-band trailer over on Yahoo Movies.

Jennifer Hudson went to some dark places to score the Oscar for her debut performance in "Dreamgirls," but none darker than the ones she plunges into in the gritty indie "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete," out today in select theaters. In George Tillman Jr.'s drama, Hudson plays Gloria, a heroin-using single mother, who prostitutes to get by. When she gets taken away by authorities, her son Mister (Skylan Brooks) and his friend Pete (Ethan Dizon), who also comes from a damaged home, go into hiding. Hudson called up Indiewire to discuss the challenging role, and why she still feels insecure about acting despite having won an Oscar. As Gloria, you go to some pretty incredibly dark places with the character. Was any part of you was scared to take on the role? All of me was afraid to take on the role. I literally was terrified all...

The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete is a heart breaker. It follows two boys, 13-year-old Mister (Skylan Brooks) and 9-year-old Pete (Ethan Dizon) who are left on their own in public housing one blistering hot NYC summer, facing constant hunger and the looming threats of nasty drug dealers and a group home with a terrible rep. It’s all clearly the fault of their drug-addicted prostitute mothers, one of whom is played with gritty realism by Jennifer Hudson. If it’s hard for us to watch, what was it like for Hudson, mother of 4-year-old David Daniel Otunga Jr., to act?

“It’s unimaginable,” Hudson told us of being a mother like Gloria, who lets her son see her shoot heroin and turn tricks in a restaurant bathroom. “I had those moments, like, ‘Wow, this is real.

Sometimes a really good movie will sneak into theaters with no fanfare or advance screenings. Disconnect played basically unannounced at one theater for a week earlier this year and it’s one of my favorites so far. That also looks to be the case with The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete. Despite its clunky title, it’s currently sitting on an 88% over at Rotten Tomatoes and looks like something well worth seeking out. St. Louisans will have the chance as it opens here this weekend exclusively at The AMC West Olive and the Regal St. Louis Mills 18.

In his Sundance London 2013 review, Kenji Lloyd (Heyuguys.co.uk) wrote,
“The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete is a film that stays with you.”
The must-see drama stars Skylan Brooks, Ethan Dizon, Jordin Sparks, Jeffrey Wright, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, with Anthony Mackie and Jennifer Hudson.
During a sweltering summer in New York City, 13-year-old Mister’s (Brooks) hard-living mother (Hudson) is apprehended by the police, leaving the boy and nine-year-old Pete (Dizon) alone to forage for food while dodging child protective services and the destructive scenarios of the Brooklyn projects. Faced with more than any child can be expected to bear, the resourceful Mister nevertheless feels he is an unstoppable force against seemingly unmovable obstacles. But what really keeps the pair in the survival game is much more Mister’s vulnerability than his larger-than-life attitude.

This is the first trailer for one of the films we saw at Sundance this year, called The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete. This was a great film. I know it's not a movie for everyone, but if you like a good solid filmmaking, acting, and story, then you might want to give this one a try.
Separated from their mothers and facing a summer in the Brooklyn projects alone, two boys hide from police and forage for food, with only each other to trust. A story of salvation through friendship and two boys against the world.
Eli had this to say about the film in his review:
It's always a treat to see young actors who can run a whole gamut of emotions. With the help of a stellar supporting cast, newcomers Skylan Brooks (Mister) and Ethan Dizon (Pete) are able to pull off both the comedic and emotional with ease.

Catch new photos from The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, starring Skylan Brooks, Ethan Dizon, Anthony Mackie, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jennifer Hudson, Jeffrey Wright, Jordin Sparks, Julito McCullum and Adam Trese. Admitedly, I'd never heard of this one, which is quite surprising considering the intriguing title. George Tillman Jr. is quite picky about his projects, having just 6 times at the helm from 1995 until now. So you know, this project must have attracted him very strongly. He's known for films like strong films like Soul Food, Men of Honor, Notorious and Faster, and now directs from the script by Michael Starrbury.

A film like this lives and dies with its child actors, and George Tillman, Jr. found an incredibly talented leading duo for The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete.
Relative newcomers Skylan Brooks and Ethan Dizon take the titular roles of Mister and Pete, respectively, and their performances are two of the most memorable and powerful I’ve ever seen from such young actors.
Truly, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete is a film that stays with you.
Michael Starrbury makes his feature debut here as a screenwriter, and his script is unflinching in its take on the young Mister and Pete’s struggle to survive a sweltering summer in New York City, alone in the Brooklyn projects.

Everybody Knows: Tillman’s Latest a Melodramatic Exercise of Youth in the Projects
Director George Tillman Jr. takes a step away from mainstream fodder for an examination of urban miserabalism with The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete. Due to a charismatic performance from his lead child star, Tillman’s latest manages to clear a majority of the significant hurdles in the way of making the film a dramatic success, even as it recalls several other notable lost children titles, anywhere from a handful of Spike Lee titles to Hirokazu Koreeda’s Nobody Knows (2004). Despite its well meaning intentions, some significant issues with the film cannot be overlooked, namely first time film feature scribe Michael Starrbury’s script, which throws so many maudlin scenarios at us that Precious (2009) starts to look like a glowing example of agency.

The 2013 incarnation of the Sundance Film Festival came to a close over the past weekend, giving film fans and critics the first look at numerous anticipated feature films from a slew of directors, writers, and actors, some of whom even pull double duty both in front of and behind the camera. Over the nearly 10-day festival, numerous films were snapped up by distributors, ensuring that the public who was unable to make it to Sundance will get an opportunity to see it at some point. There were more than a few films, however, that did not get picked up by distributors, leaving their fate in limbo, despite looking quite promising. Here are ten films in the latter category that we are still excited and hopeful to see someday.

George Tillman Jr. arrives at Sundance this year with a film significantly more anticipated than his previous two efforts (“Notorious” and “Faster”) in the form of “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete.” The film will tell the story of two kids from Brooklyn who are left to fend for themselves one summer after their mothers are both detained by the authorities. Jennifer Hudson, Anthony Mackie, Jeffrey Wright, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Skylan Brooks (playing Mister), Ethan Dizon (playing Pete) and Jordin Sparks all star in what Sundance have described as “a beautifully observed and tremendously moving film about salvation through friendship and the way transformation sometimes can happen just by holding on long enough.” Ahead of its world premiere at Sundance later this week the first clip from the movie has shown up online, and it focuses on Brooks’ Mister and his mother played by Hudson. Judging from the movie’s.

The best reason to see "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete," executive produced by Alicia Keys and premiering at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, is the breakout star turn by young actor Skylan Brooks. Unfortunately, he's also pretty much the only reason to see a movie that's more sentimental than moving and more cutesy than credible.
At least "Mister and Pete" is as cutesy as a movie about the hard knocks of ghetto life can be. Brooks stars as heroic 14-year-old Mister, who struggles at school but dreams of escaping from the projects and achieving his goal of becoming a big time movie star. His mother (Jennifer Hudson, de-glammed and fully committed in an underdeveloped role) is a hardcore heroin addict who supports her habit through prostitution.
Mister routinely sees residents in his neighborhood dragged off to jail and kids shipped off to group homes by child protective services. When...

*Note Updates in next blog: Sundance By Numbers Update
Originally this report used a horserace as its metaphor. It was designed to see who was ahead of the others and who was lagging behind. U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales. Now the race between producer reps and international sales agents for representing films, primarily at Sundance and Toronto is tracked in the By Numbers Report.
The report tracks which agents and which international sales agents are selling the most films, which titles are selling best, which distributors are buying the most, and any other noteworthy “races”, e.g., how many films are by women, Asians, African-diasporites, or are about such subjects as Jewish, Glbt, politics, whatever.
This year’s Cannes saw the number of women directors fall so drastically (from a steady 10 – 13% in festivals during the last few years), that an outcry was heard from professionals in the industry. Sundance significantly ups this figure. This year out of 16 fiction features in competition, 8 are by women. Of Sundance’s 113 features, 37 are by women which means 33%. We hope this is a trend and not an anomoly. Only time will tell. According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 5% of the 250 highest-grossing films last year were directed by women.
Over time, the reports spot trends in the business of buying and selling, especially during festivals like Toronto and Sundance.
With time, we may find the number of Asian, Asian-American, African diaspora, Middle-Eastern and female directed films impact the marketplace itself. For that reason, these reports will continue to be offered to film professionals. The criterion are not set in stone but depend upon the moment.
Sundance By Numbers
If there were a Sundance Institute Performance Metric, a measure of its activities and performance, inwardly focusing on the performance of the organization, would show a high value of performance against customer requirements and value. Its performance metrics would prove it to be very healthy and consistent with the six criteria: time, cost, resources, scope, quality, and actions.
Bravo Sundance! On all fronts it is carrying through its original purpose and vision.
Out of 12,146 features and shorts (429 more than in 2012) submitted this yearincluding 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 113 features were chosen. 98 of these are world premieres. 33% of these are directed by women.
This year half of the 16 narrative fiction features in competition are directed by women. In the 2012 festival, only 3 of the 16 dramatic competition films were made by women. Overall, 33% (37 out of 113) of the Sundance titles are directed by women.
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, represented films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Number Of Producer Reps Repping U.S. Rights
What shows up most on this scorecard is the prevalence of the talent agencies and other “producers’ representatives”. In those “good old days” of Sundance before “Sex, Lies and Videotape” alerted Hollywood that there was some capital to be made in Park City, Sundance gave a home to the original visions of a few independent minded filmmakers, and there were no terms to describe “producer reps”. International sales agents (when these films had any such representation, which was also rare) did their work without deferring to dealmakers in Hollywood. And, as I said, these films usually did not have international representation. That is why the newly emerging acquisitions executives went to Sundance looking for films that they would not find in the existing markets (Cannes, Mifed or Afm).
Anyway, here we are today and here are the numbers:
There are about 12 Producers Reps. The newest fold in the relatively new “mini industry” of representing producers to the U.S. distribution community is that now, instead of one producer rep per film, often two competitive agencies might rep the U.S. rights as you can see in top scorers CAA, Wme or UTA’s lineups.
Producer reps do their best work in Sundance and in Toronto. They usually represent the producer to help make a lucrative U.S. deal. After the heat is gone in Sundance and Toronto, the producer reps usually fade away from the deal making, leaving the unpicked-up films in a limbo until some distributor finally makes a deal with the producer or the international sales agent directly.
In terms of capitol, while there is no official count, it is said that last year $30 million in deals were done at Sundance. If this is true, is it made primarily by the producer reps? What percentage do they get from the deal? Does this mean filmmakers have to have CAA rep them to break out of the gate? (The answer is no). Agents taking on the job of being producer reps are doing so because they have helped with packaging and/ or financing the films they are repping. Sometimes talent takes lower salaries when they work in indies and the agents must get as much back as possible.
It is not necessary to have an agent, there are other types of producer reps, including attorneys who act as attorneys but sometimes seem to be producers reps like Cinetic’s John Sloss, or Linda Licther, or Donaldson Callif who has 11 films in Sundance and 2 in Slamdance this year. There are also independent producer reps who are hungrier than the major agencies who must quickly earn their 10% (or not) and move on. These producer reps tend to work year round with the films they represent. Submarine, Preferred Content and Ronna Wallace’s Eastgate are the most important ones today.

They're enough to make you wonder if the theater classes have gotten more advanced since you were in junior high. The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete has Skylan Brooks (age 13) and Ethan Dizon (10) as the title characters, two resourceful kids in a Brooklyn housing project who must fend for themselves in the absence of their crack-whore mothers. In Mud, Tye Sheridan (who turned 15 during the shoot) and Jacob Lofland (15) are slightly less...

Director: George Tillman Jr.
Screenwriter: Michael Starrbury
Cast: Skylan Brooks, Ethan Dizon, Jennifer Hudson, Jordan Sparks, and Anthony Mackie, with Jeffrey Wright and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
Official Synopsis: Separated from their mothers and facing a summer in the Brooklyn projects alone, two boys hide from police and forage for food, with only each other to trust. A story of salvation through friendship and two boys against the world.
Performances:
It's always a treat to see young actors who can run a whole gamut of emotions. With the help of a stellar supporting cast, newcomers Skylan Brooks (Mister) and Ethan Dizon (Pete) are able to pull off both the comedic and emotional with ease. The chemistry between the two is built so naturally. Dizon has an amazing deadpan delivery, and I wouldn't be surprised if Brooks gets some well deserved awards buzz thrown his way.
Story and Direction:
The film opens very strong.

The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, premiering next week at the Sundance Film Festival, is the kind of heart-wrenching, emotional, and funny coming-of-age drama that isn’t afraid to be rough around the edges. It also boasts big names, from Alicia Keys as co-executive producer and composer, to American Idol alums Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks as stars.
The movie, directed by George Tillman, Jr. (Soul Food), follows two boys — sad-eyed, feisty, and ambitious 14-year-old Mister (breakout Skylan Brooks) and small, innocent 9-year-old Pete (Ethan Dizon) — abandoned by their moms and surviving within the gritty world of the Brooklyn projects.

Jeffrey Wright is the kind of weighty actor that directors fiend for, able to handle both indie and big budget movies, down-in-the-dirt roles and parts that require square-jawed strength.
So it’s no surprise Wright took on the intense role of police commissioner Carl Fairbanks in the upcoming political thriller Broken City, directed by Menace II Society filmmaker Allen Hughes and out in theaters Jan. 18. Co-starring Mark Wahlberg as an ex-cop who is hired by a corrupt mayor (Russell Crowe) to photograph his cheating glam wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones), the noir-ish movie explodes into a full-out scandal laced with murder.

The Sundance Film Festival has released their movie premiere line-up for 2013, and there's a lot of films on the list that I'm really interested in seeing. A few of the most notable movies include Before Midnight, jOBS, and Chan wook-Park's Stoker, which is the movie I'm most excited about seeing at the festival.
I'm excited about this year's festival, it looks like we're going to have a ton of movies to see, so we'll be extremely busy. I hope to hell I can find the time to see all the movies I want to see while I'm there. It's always a challenge, but it's a challenge I love to face.
Look over the movie premiere line-up below and let us know if there are any films you're looking forward to seeing!

With the exception of a pair of Fox Searchlight titles (The East and Stoker), Warner Bros.’ Before Midnight and 6 hour mini-series from Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Premieres program is chock-full of acquisition friendly titles. Fourteen in all, the selection includes several returning filmmakers in Drake Doremus, David Gordon Green, Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman and Michael Winterbottom and Joseph Gordon-Levitt — all filmmakers that I accurately predicted would return with product and when we find cast names/star wattage we usually find quality – not surprisingly, four Blacklist listed projects The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (’07), A.C.O.D. (’08), Stoker (’10), The Way, Way Back (’10) (joining the previously announced Toy’s House and Spectacular Now) are among the announcements. And final note: the chances of bumping into either actors Dermont Mulroney or James Franco at a Park City party have now increased: Franco who brings his experimental directed film Interior. Leather Bar....

Sundance Film Festival 2013 is becoming more and more promising seemingly with each passing day.
Last week, we heard the brilliant first line-up, which included the likes of Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Kill Your Darlings, The Spectacular Now, Touchy Feely, and Crystal Fairy.
Then came the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier line-ups, which included Sightseers’ Us premiere, S-vhs, and We Are What We Are.
And tonight the festival has announced its line-ups in the Premieres and Documentary Premieres category, and they are somewhat amazing.
Topping the list is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature directorial debut, Don Jon’s Addiction, which is all but guaranteed to be one of the best films of next year.
Also heading to Utah will be Zal Batmanglij’s The East, starring Ellen Page, Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgård, and Toby Kebbell, seeing the director re-team with Marling once more following the success of Sound of My Voice.
