For the most part, the opening ceremony of the 76th Cannes Film Festival was a tightly scripted affair. The show, which was broadcast live across the country from the Lumiere theater on the public television channel France 2, included an honorary Palme d’Or for Michael Douglas, who stumbled through a speech from a teleprompter at the back of the room and bungled a few words of gratitude in French. Catherine Deneuve came out and read a poem about Ukraine. Host Chiara Mastroianni offered the usual platitudes. “The cinema has never abandoned us,” she said. “We, in turn, must commit ourselves to it for the next 10 days.”
Yet when jury president and Swedish director Ruben Östlund took the stage after a generous montage of his acclaimed satiric work, he appeared to improvise a speech about the value of watching movies together. “Back in the day, we were gathering in front of the TV,...

Thierry Fremaux doesn’t see anything controversial about having a Johnny Depp film open the biggest film festival in the world.
Depp stars as French king Louis Xv in Jeanne du Barry from French director Maiwenn, which will kick off the 2023 Cannes Film Festival tomorrow. The choice raised some eyebrows in the U.S., where Depp has been more famous of late for his messy divorce, involving allegations of domestic abuse, from actress Amber Heard and a pair of high-profile defamation suits. One, filed in Britain over an article in the tabloid The Sun which to him as a “wife-beater,” he lost. The other, filed in the U.S. against Heard, Depp won, and was awarded more than $10 million in damages.
But Fremaux said Depp’s public image did not factor into the decision to pick the film.
“I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the U.

Cannes Film Festival’s chief Thierry Fremaux asked journalists Monday if they really believed Cannes was celebrating rapists, as recently suggested by “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” actor Adele Haenel in an open letter published last week in Telerama.
Haenel, who quit acting in films after Roman Polanski won best director at the Cesar Awards in 2020, said she retired from the film industry for political reasons, and said Cannes was “ready to do anything to defend their rapist chiefs,” citing Polanski, Gerard Depardieu and Dominique Boutonnat, the president of the National Film Board (Cnc).
Fremaux told journalists at a press conference ahead of the 2023 festival’s opening night that Haenel, who was at Cannes to present “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” in competition in 2019, was making “radical” comments that were “false.”
“She didn’t think that when she came to Cannes unless she suffered from a crazy dissonance,...

On May 21, 2003, 38.1 million viewers watched Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken battle it out to become the winner of season two of “American Idol.” When Ryan Seacrest opened the envelope, he proclaimed, “After 24 million votes, the winner of ‘American Idol’ 2003 is… Ruben Studdard!” Aiken was not surprised — he saw the name on the card before Seacrest read it out loud.
Studdard and Aiken went on to have successful careers, starting with their debut albums, which both topped the Billboard album chart.
Twenty years to the day of the season two finale, Studdard and Aiken will return to the “Idol” stage for the season 21 finale to perform one of the songs they are singing every night on stage for their 20th anniversary tour. The two “Idol” stars sat down backstage while on tour to talk to Variety about their time on the series, their enduring friendship and this shared milestone.

This article contains spoilers for “Snowfall” Season 6.
Despite the death of his character in this season of “Snowfall,” Amin Joseph’s job on the series wasn’t quite finished with that. The actor, who starred as uncle Jerome Saint, returned to the FX series to direct this week’s episode, “Ballad of the Bear.”
As “Snowfall” inches closer to the series finale, Gustavo ‘El Oso’ Zapata’s (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) important decision to choose a side takes center stage in this week’s episode. After being approached by the CIA, the DEA and the Kgb to turn on his associates, Oso must figure out whose side he’ll stand on — will he continue to stay loyal to Franklin Saint (Damson Idris) or former agent Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson)? Bbxx By Jerry Scott and Rick Kirkman 335 pages, Andrews McMeel Publishing, $35 In the early days of 1990, a brand new comic strip debuted, perfect for parents of young children and universal in its humor. Coming from veteran writer Jerry Scott with art by Rick Kirkman, Baby Blues was a pretty quick hit, still running in hundreds of papers. Now in its 23rd year, Andrews McMeel recently celebrated the success with the release of Bbxx: Baby Blues Decades 1 & 2. Unlike a lot of strip collections, this comes with extensive commentary from both creators, annotating and riffing on what prompted particularly strips, gags, characters, and visuals. As a result, this becomes an interesting look back at the development and evolution of a strip that went from two parents and an infant to a five-member family. It caught fire quickly, earning the Ruben Award for Best Comic Strip of the Year in 1995. Looking back, Kirkman...
