Viola Davis achieved Egot status at the 2023 Grammys after she won the best audiobook, narration and storytelling recording award for her memoir, Finding Me.
“I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola. To her honor her, her life, her joy, her trauma, everything. And it has just been such a journey. I just Egot!,” she said while accepting the honor as the audience cheered.
Davis continued to thank “everybody who was a part of [her] story and the best chapter yet.”
Specifically, she thanked husband Julius Tennon and daughter Genesis, calling them “my life, you’re my joy, the best chapter in my book.”
The actress previously said in the Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event, that her decision to write her book, which was released in April, was “exacerbated” by the Covid-19 pandemic but rooted in her “hitting the top” in Hollywood. She said, “The only thing I...

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Cicely Tyson doesn’t mince words when reflecting on her six-year journey as Ophelia Harkness on ABC’s recently concluded drama series “How to Get Away with Murder.” “I don’t like goodbyes. I don’t like endings, so I rarely ever think about anything that I’m doing as ending,” the 95-year-old actress tells me. As for no longer working with leading lady Viola Davis, who portrayed her daughter Annalise Keating, Tyson declares, “I will miss her deeply.” You see, it was Davis who originally wanted Tyson to play the part, and her reaction at the time was priceless: “When I heard that, my mouth fell open like a broken pocketbook!” Below, listen to our podcast interview or read on for the complete transcript.

There’s a reason lots of actors play lawyers and lots of awards voters honor them: those speeches! What’s a closing argument but an impassioned plea for justice delivered to a captive audience? An actor’s dream. Viola Davis got to sum up her entire six-year run on “How to Get Away with Murder” with one such speech (watch it above). Will it pay dividends for her again at the Emmys?

With more than a combined 100 years in the business, Cicely Tyson and Glynn Turman have endured plenty; they launched their careers in an America that was still governed by Jim Crow laws, and have worked consistently since, both on stage and screen. And they certainly have a lifetime of fascinating stories to tell, having starred opposite screen legends including Sidney Poitier, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Harry Belafonte and more. They’ve worked together on several occasions, first in a 1974 staging of Eugene O’Neill’s “Desire Under The Elms,” to playing mother and son in the film “The River Niger” (1976), and co-starring in “A Hero Ain’t Nothin’ But a Sandwich” (1978). The upcoming sixth season of “How to Get Away With Murder” will be the Shondaland legal drama’s last outing, ABC announced on Thursday.
The Viola Davis-led legal drama is set to return for its 15-episode final season on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom.”

Out of ABC's 21 scripted series, How to Get Away with Murder ranks as the network's 15th highest-rated series.
The show does add on a decent chunk of viewers in delayed viewing, but with the continued erosion, it makes sense that ABC would end it.
The good news is that fans will be getting resolution to that big cliffhanger. Investing many years in a TV show for it to be canceled is not the best.

How To Get Away With Murder, starring Viola Davis, will return for a sixth season on ABC. It is one of three Shondaland series to get renewals for next season, along with flagship Grey’s Anatomy and spinoff Station 19, both run by Krista Vernoff. Legal drama For the People has been canceled.
“Everyone at Shondaland is thrilled that our fans’ commitment to Tgit continues,” said Shonda Rhimes and producing partner Betsy Beers in a joint statement. “We are so proud of Krista and Pete and the work they do. Making the choice to have Krista oversee ‘Station 19’ was easy — the creativity she brings to the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe continues a tradition of storytelling we hold dear.”
Created by Peter Nowalk, How to Get Away with Murder has been a constant in ABC’s Tgit programming block since its premiere in 2014. During its fifth season, the series ranked as the No.

Tgit fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as ABC has renewed the Shonda Rhimes-produced “Grey’s Anatomy,” “How to Get Away With Murder” and “Station 19.”
While the “Grey’s” firefighter spinoff and Viola Davis-led “Htgawm” were picked up for a third and sixth year, respectively, “Grey’s” — the Ellen Pompeo-led medical drama that started it all — got a two-season renewal for Seasons 16 and 17.
“Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Krista Vernoff will pull double duty running the upcoming season of “Station 19,” following the exit of former showrunner Stacy McKee.
“I’m thrilled to continue at the helm of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ and I’m honored and energized by the opportunity to run ‘Station 19,’ as well. To expand upon the world Stacy McKee created, and further merge it with the world of ‘Grey’s,’ is an exciting challenge,” Vernoff said.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg has only officially been in the presidential race for one day, and the South Bend, Indiana politician has already raised big bucks.
James Murdoch, considered the more moderate of conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s sons, donated $2,800 to Buttigieg last month, according to Federal Election Commission (Fec) filings — that’s the maximum an individual can give to a candidate.
ABC Studios TV Writer Peter Nowalk also donated $2,800. Other major Hollywood contributors include Ken Olin, Jane Lynch and Mandy Moore.
The 2020 Democratic contender raised more than $7 million in the first quarter of the year, his campaign announced Monday.
Though he hadn’t officially tossed his hat into the ring last month, Buttigieg got a big boost in name recognition when he appeared at CNN’s Democratic Presidential Town Hall at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas.
After weeks of anticipation, he made his candidacy official at a rally Sunday in South Bend.

In 1987, Tony Goldwyn made history by playing the first gay man to die of AIDS on episodic television during an episode of “Designing Women.” A couple of years later, “Thirtysomething” featured a gay artist (Peter Frechette) who was HIV-positive. These HIV/AIDS storylines about gay men may have involved the show’s leads but they were usually short-lived. In the case of “Thirtysomething,” advertisers bailed on the show when Frechette was shown in bed with his lover. Years later, HBO’s “Looking” continually addressed safe sex and HIV/AIDS throughout the show’s two-season run before it ended in 2016. Now, however, HIV/AIDS in the Lgbt community is being addressed on television series like never before, in series that range from broadcast dramas such as Fox’s “Empire” and ABC’s “How To Get Away With Murder” to cable period drama “Pose” on FX.

Were the quake that shook up Hollywood late Sunday one of the literal rather than figurative variety, it would have measured at least a 7.0 on the Richter scale — it was that massive. Even now, days after the news broke that Shonda Rhimes was leaving her longtime home at ABC for the land of deep pockets and creative freedom known as Netflix, the television capitol is reeling from the aftershocks.

Viola Davis' How to Get Away With Murder character Annalise Keating is a lot of things, including a pansexual. Creator Pete Nowalk confirmed the character's sexuality at the 2017 TCA summer press tour during a GLAAD panel when asked about harmful tropes, with TV shows sometimes portraying Lgbt people as bad people. "I got really lucky in not having to make my characters perfect," he said. She gets to just be bad in all the best ways. In that way it's very liberating to write any Lgbtq...
