A slate of candidates challenging Fran Drescher’s Unity ticket is beginning to take shape prior to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA election.
On Tuesday night a group labeling itself a coalition of independents announced that candidates including Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo), Elliott Gould (Ocean’s Eleven), Dr. Drew (Celebrity Rehab), Diane Ladd (Chinatown), Jamie Ann Allman (Candy), Louis Herthum (The Peripheral), Robert Davi (Die Hard), Brent Sexton (Justified), Michelle Jubilee (1923), DaJuan Johnson (Bosch) and Veronica Bruce (Empire) would all run as for seats on the SAG-AFTRA National Board.
Further, Sons of Anarchy and 9-1-1 star Rockmond Dunbar will run for the position of Los Angeles Local vice president as well. The group will join previously announced candidates Maya Gilbert-Dunbar (the Banshee actor who is married to Rockmond), running for union president, and Peter Antico (Outlaw Johnny Black), aiming for secretary-treasurer.

On a visual level, it’s easy to compare Juan Pablo Blanco’s short film Soy Hombre (I’m a Man) to Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s acclaimed graphic novel Sin City. Both pay homage to film noir via a distinctly digital visual aesthetic that allows both films to situate themselves as contemporary artefacts that are indebted to the past. Blanco’s short, however, distinguishes itself away from Rodriguez’s feature as it feels specifically more Mexican in its construction. Through the language of the characters, the sparing yet precise use of pink, and the atmospheric music, the audience is thrust into an unsettling underbelly of Mexican society and specifically into the world of a leering taxi driver who picks up a quietly suspicious nurse. Dn is proud to premiere Soy Hombre on our pages today and are joined by Blanco for a conversation below where he...

As SAG-AFTRA’s two factions threaten to fracture the guild further – now they’re threatening to see each other – independent presidential candidate Jane Austin has embarked on a campaign to unify the 160,000-member union in advance of next year’s negotiations for a new film and TV contract.
Saying that “the two-party slate system represents an antiquated system that no longer effectively serves the interests of the membership,” Austin now is rolling out her endorsements for board candidates from both parties – incumbent president Gabrielle Carteris’ Unite for Strength slate and challenger Matthew Modine’s Membership First opposition slate. Austin, currently the guild’s national secretary-treasurer, was elected to that post two years ago on the Membership First slate.
“Based on the board candidates’ statements, and my experience working with them, I’ve chosen to support these specific candidates no matter what slate they’re on because I know...

Membership First, the “loyal opposition” at SAG-AFTRA, has unveiled its slate of candidates in the upcoming elections. Patricia Richardson is running for president of the guild’s Los Angeles local, and Frances Fisher and David Jolliffe are vying for two local vice president slots. As previously reported, Matthew Modine heads the slate in his bid to unseat Gabrielle Carteris as president of SAG-aftra, and Jodi Long is running for national secretary-treasurer.
Richardson, who is the La local’s first vp, was defeated by incumbent Ken Howard four years ago in the race for president of the 160,000-member union — “We have the largest local, half the union’s members,” Richardson said in her campaign statement. “Our building, doubling as national headquarters and our home, now a construction site rented at $6,000,000 a year, is inadequate for our needs. We still have to rent other spaces for any large meetings. Thanks to Membership First,...

MGM has released a fantastic new full trailer for their upcoming Stargate: Origins series and it looks like it's going to be spectacularly fun! I love the tone of this as it has that adventurous Indiana Jones tone and spirit that a lot of fans enjoy. The trailer features lots of new footage an additional detail on the story that the series will tell. Here's the synopsis:
In 1939, Professor Paul Langford and his daughter Catherine are still grappling with the mysteries of the ancient relic they discovered in the Egyptian desert more than ten years ago. With war looming in Europe and funding running out, these brilliant minds are approaching their lowest ebb. Little do they know, answers are about to present themselves in a dangerous form, when the Nazi Occultist Dr. Wilhelm Brücke approaches their facility with a sinister motive.Enlisting the help of two young soldiers, Catherine must...

We've already seen a vague teaser trailer and a behind-the-scenes featurette for this new Stargate: Origins series. But today we have a new trailer and it offers us our best look yet at what this show is going to be like and it looks pretty cool! It has a very Indiana Jones kind of vibe to it and I love that!
The series follows a young version of the character Catherine Langford (Ellie Gall) and it will explore the early history surrounding the first discovery of the alien portals. Catherine will be swept away on an unexpected adventure "to unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save the Earth from darkness."

[Note: Marvel’s been keeping this character’s identity under pretty tight wraps, so it’s worth noting that this will probably spoil a major-ish plot reveal for Spider-Man Homecoming.]
Ever since she was cast in the latest Spider-Man reboot, Homecoming, people have been speculating about where Zendaya fits in the overall Peter Parker mythos. Was she a potential love interest, the McU equivalent to Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacey, or one of Spidey’s other romantic partners? (Michelle Gonzalez, from the comics’ late-2000s run, was a popular guess, mostly based off of her sharing a first name with the character.) All of that guesswork was complicated by her obvious disdain for Peter in the film’s trailers, but hey: It wouldn’t be Spider-Man if love came easy for our friendly neighborhood web-slinger.
Now, however, Nerdist appears to have uncovered a major clue to the character’s identity, in ...
