Writer of the 1976 Palme d’Or winner Taxi Driver, and having been in comp with Mishima (1985) and Patty Hearst (1988), this is Paul Schrader’s long-awaited return with might be the final film of his career in Oh, Canada.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds Of Kindness has landed top of Screen International’s Cannes jury grid with an average score of 2.4.
The triptych drama is the first film so far to receive a four (excellent), both from Le Meduza’s Anton Dolin and Screen’s own critic. Others were less convinced with Mathieu Macharet (France’s Le Monde) and Stephanie Zacharek (US Time) both giving it just one (poor).

Paul Schrader may have found a trick for cheating death: Just make more movies. Amid some serious health struggles over the past few years, the 77-year-old auteur and screenwriting legend has entered one of his most prolific phases.
“Every time I’m getting ready to die, I have a new idea,” Schrader says. “Then I think, ‘Oh well, I guess I can’t die yet. I have to write this.’ ”
Over a recent five-year stretch, Schrader wrote and directed what he describes as an accidental trilogy — First Reformed (2017) with Ethan Hawke, The Card Counter (2021) with Oscar Isaac and Master Gardener (2022) with Joel Edgerton — with each film involving a fresh spin on the “man alone in a room” archetype he invented nearly 50 years ago with his script for Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976). Schrader is now back again with a new feature, Oh, Canada, co-starring Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli,...

Yuichi Sato's energetic flick “City Hunter” is loud, explosive, and in your face. Yet, it knows that, embracing it in a wildly entertaining experience. While many recent Netflix manga/anime adaptations have missed the mark, this movie does Tsukasa Hojo's source material justice, while taking a few creative liberties to tweak aspects for a modern audience. The film has garnered a positive reception from longtime fans of the “City Hunter” franchise, as well as newcomers, being highlighted as the definitive live-action adaptation next to the French version “Nicky Larson et le parfum de Cupidon” by Philippe Lacheau. It is funny to consider it took this long for Japan to adapt Hojo's work for non-animated media, with many prior renditions primarily coming from Hong Kong, the most famous being Wong Jing's “City Hunter” starring Jackie Chan.

With exceptional frankness, director Mishima presented “Voice” to the public of Udine Far East Film Festival, revealing that the film – that she wrote as well – is inspired at large, by her own trauma of being sexually abused at the age of 6. Said frankness is something that comes undoubtedly from a long and painful path of recovery and the director has challenged herself navigating self-worth and guilt in her latest work.
Voice is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
The film is in omnibus format, composed by three episodes of different style and far apart location, and a bridging conclusion. In the first episode, in a stylish house near lake Toya, in the North of Japan, a woman, Maki (Maki Carrousel) is preparing Osechi, a traditional New Year's feast that contains several dishes, all highly symbolic of good fortune, safety, good health and longevity. In doing so she follows the...

With a base roster of 32 fighters, Tekken 8 has surpassed Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6, as it has earned the crown of being the greatest fighting game of the current generation because of its relatively non-greedy practices. Where MK1 and SF6 had 22 and 18 characters in their base rosters, respectively, with the rest of the fighters locked behind paid Dlc, the latest installment in the Tekken franchise ensured that it treated its fans with as many iconic faces as possible.
However, there was a void in the absence of one Og fighter who, ever since his debut in 1997’s Tekken 3, remained a fan-favorite character in every game that followed.
Eddy Gordo Enters the Tekken 8 Roster in Style
The Indomitable Flash, Eddy Gordo, has arrived in Tekken 8.
Although Eddy Gordo will make his Tekken 8 debut for all players on April 4, gamers who bought the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition got to select the Brazilian fighter from April 1 onwards.

As a fan of fighting games, Tekken 8 was pretty high on my video games of 2024 list. I’ve been playing the games since the very beginning, back when there were only eight characters until you unlocked the rest. Tekken has always been a unique franchise to me, from the ongoing Mishima family “let me grab my popcorn” mess to the fact that some of the lore is unapologetically bizarre. You’d think the multiple bear characters were a joke, but not only are they part of the ongoing story, they aren’t even the weirdest fighter you can pick — and I love every minute of it. There was a time when arcades reigned supreme, and Bandai Namco’s 3D fighter Tekken series was a top contender for king of the fighting games. Despite being someone who grew up in the twilight of arcades’ popularity, my first experience with Tekken wasn’t with a cabinet, but with a kiosk at Toys “R” Us. As a kid who loved playing Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat at home, my attention was instantly piqued by the flashy graphics and explosive audio of Tekken 2 blasting from the chunky TV...

If you ever wanted to hear Scottish actor Brian Cox ask the question "What the hell is a Devil Jin?," the new Tekken 8 trailer was tailor made for you. As Logan Roy in Succession , he knows a thing or two about tumultuous family ties, and there's no blood more bound to boil than that of the Mishima clan and the other relationships in the Tekken series. If you need a catchup before the new entry arrives, Brian Cox narrates a "Story So Far" trailer that recaps the saga in a way only he can manage. Though Master Gardener is appearing on best-of-2023 lists, Paul Schrader isn’t slowing down or resting on laurels. In October he finished shooting his 24th feature Oh, Canada, an adaptation of the novel by his friend (and Affliction writer) Russell Banks starring Richard Gere, Jacob Elordi, Uma Thurman, and Michael Imperioli. An American Gigolo reunion in the midst of Schrader’s late-career hot streak is enough to vault that into upper echelons of most-anticipated 2024 features, but excitement is doubled by a recent interview in Le Monde where arguably his greatest film gets invoked: “It’s the first time, since Mishima, that I’ve made a puzzle film. Or an assembly of scattered memories, heterogeneous formats, fragments.” And despite wrapping two months ago, a 91-minute cut (retaining every scene shot over 17 days) is already finished, now only awaiting a score by the group Phosphorescent.
But when do we see it? Schrader thinks Oh,...

In the course of the 1960s, much of what was long overdue after the end of World War II took shape in the form of questioning authority, institutions and indeed social norms. Within the culture of several nations, this revolution (if you want to call it that) expressed itself in pieces of art which could no longer be categorized within the traditional patterns, resulting in many artists feeling a kind of uncprecedented freedom. It was only a brief period, but it surely had its consequences, as we can see in the highly influential cinema produced by Art Theatre Guild and its many directors. One of them, Yasuzo Masumura directed over 40 films during his career and was once regarded as one of the most promising talents of this new generation of filmmakers, even though many of his works remain underappreciated (and under-seen) in his home country and beyond its borders, for example,...

Writer and director Paul Schrader is notorious for fleshing out characters, especially male ones, that have something extremely intense burning inside them. Some theorists put his films in special categories, and his new film Master Gardener is said to be the third of his Man in a Room trilogy. The characters in his films often have a dark past, and their present is filled with loneliness, a feeling that is masked by a stoic demeanor. In Master Gardener, Schrader has yet again created an atmospheric, layered drama that has at its center the same masculine figure that he is so well known for. A seemingly principled man with a past that haunts him and the chance of redemption coming in the form of a feminine spirit. Schrader, who is the writer of films such as the explosive urban character study Taxi Driver, American Gigolo and Mishima, among others, has tried...
