The fifth episode of Lovecraft Country, “Strange Case,” is all about metamorphoses, some more traumatic than others, but all equally powerful in setting the stage for several central characters as they enter the second half of the season.
What’s interesting about “Strange Case,” directed by Cheryl Dunye and written by Misha Green and Jonathan Kidd & Sonya Winton, is that it indirectly deals with Yahima’s (Monique Candelaria) legacy and the idea of two-spiritedness. Following Montrose’s murder of Yahima at the end of the fourth episode, a controversial move for viewers who view the character ...

[This story contains spoilers for season one, episode five of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, “Strange Case.”]
Fear. It is the emotion that drives so many of the decisions, both noble and ill-fated, that the characters make in Lovecraft Country. There is arguably no character more fearful than Montrose Freeman (Michael K. Williams), whose fear has manifested itself in ugly, heartbreaking ways during the first half of the season. While viewers may see Montrose as something of an antagonist, especially given his actions in the previous episode — the brutal murder of Yahima (Monique Candelaria) — his fear is driven by ...

This Lovecraft Country review contains spoilers.
Lovecraft Country is a rapturously violent dramatic horror series where pain and death are par for the course. And while the show delights in depicting wickedness, the violence always feels purposeful. Even with that in mind, however, last week’s episode, “A History of Violence,” makes the disappointing choice to unceremoniously kill Yahima, an indigenous, gender-variant character.
After an Indiana Jones-esque journey through a booby-trapped tunnel Tic, Leti, and Montrose enter Titus Braithwhite’s underwater vault, a room full of the remains of indigenous people —made apparent by their regalia— and a corpse holding Titus’ pages from the Book of Adam. When Montrose attempts to grasp the pages, the corpse reanimates. The camera lingers on the naked figure, and Montrose asks “what are you?” The recently-reanimated individual introduces themselves as Yahima, “Woman—and man, two-spirit. Neither. Both. All”

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s Lovecraft County episode ‘A History of Violence’ on HBO. Tread carefully.
Exclusive: “There was an operative sentence that came to me at the beginning, and it had to do with Jurnee Smollett calling me on a Saturday early early early in the morning,” explains director Victoria Mahoney of how she came to direct tonight’s ‘A History of Violence’ episode of Lovecraft Country.
“She said a sentence to me, and that was the sentence that got me on the plane, essentially, and it was, she said this is Indiana Jones and The Goonies for black folks,” the Star Wars vet says of the fourth episode of the Misha Green created HBO series. “I thought, oh my goodness, I’ve waited my life for that.”

Lovecraft Country Episode 4
Christina pulls into the Northside in her silver Bentley, unscathed, backdropped by Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money”, perfectly capturing her vibe of wealth and privilege and lack of fucks to give. A mood. Neither the destruction of Ardham Lodge or Tic’s ill-advised murder attempt have slowed her down, and she’s up to her usual cryptic nonsense. She’s looking for Hiram’s orrery, apparently the key to his time machine—because why not?— and has upset the local wizard wannabe, Captain Lancaster. Now, she has to contend with Winthrop’s branch of magical miscreants on top of playing whatever game she’s playing with Tic.
In “Whitey’s On The Moon” Christina was very delicately manipulating her father and Tic for her own agenda, under the...

"I will not have you trivialize everything I have sacrificed to make things better for you." This fun indie flick plays nicely with the trailer for Gifted, also about a precocious young mathematician trying to hold her own in school. Cents is a coming-of-age film about a 12-year-old girl, played by Julia Flores, who uses her calculus skills to transform the penny drive at her school into a pyramid scheme. The cast includes Lillie Kolich, Jy Prishkulnik, Claire Carter, Monique Candelaria and Esodie Geiger. I was hoping this might be a hidden gem, but the trailer doesn't show much promise, unfortunately. Still worth a quick look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Christopher Boone's Cents, direct from YouTube: Sammy (Julia Flores), an uncommonly smart twelve-year-old girl, uses her gift for mathematics and enlists her frenemies to revamp the school penny drive into a major moneymaking operation. Cents is both...
