Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiava, the two women who claim to have been lost at sea for five months after things went awry during their sailing trip to Tahiti, are now facing questions about the veracity of their story.
The two friends left their homes in Hawaii on May 3 for what was supposed to be about a month-long sailing trip to Tahiti in Appel’s sailing boat, the Sea Nymph, but they said they ran into trouble after a powerful storm flooded their engine, broke their mast and cut off their link to emergency services. But inconsistencies in their story...

Millions of Americans will flock to the beach this summer for sun-filled days of ocean fun. And while a sandy weekend getaway can be the ultimate relaxing vacation, there is one major concern many beachgoers share while swimming in the ocean - sharks. According to experts at the International Shark Attack File, last year there were 98 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks on humans. The majority of these attacks were considered "hit and run" bites that resulted in minor injury. But six attacks, worldwide, in 2015 were fatal. Experts say it is important for beachgoers to remember that humans are visitors of the...

A 12-year-old boy was swimming in chest-deep water at a Florida beach on Memorial Day when he suffered what Brevard County Ocean Rescue representatives say might be a shark bite. The possible shark attack occurred around 3:15 p.m. at Sidney Fischer Park in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The boy suffered a six-inch laceration to his right leg, and was pulled from the water by his father. "We were swimming in the ocean, and then you heard the scream," a female witnesses told Fox35 Orlando. "Off in the distance, we saw a father carrying his son, and you could physically see...

The friend of the Florida woman who was bitten by a 2-foot shark Sunday and ran out of the water with it still attached to her arm insists that the incident wasn't the young woman's fault. Alex Smoake, who was with the 23-year-old woman (who does not want her name to be publicly released), says that their group of friends was snorkeling for the first time at Boca Raton Beach in Florida when the shark latched onto the woman's right forearm. Beachgoers at the time told authorities that one or more people had been antagonizing the nurse shark in the water.

"Duh nah, duh nah, duhnah....duhnah nah nah nah!"
Following the release of shark thriller "Jaws," a generation of movie-goers were hesitant, at the very least, to set foot in the ocean (let alone go skinny dipping in it.) Yet, people can't seem to get enough shark attacks on the big screen, and we've created a video mashup of some of the craziest and most memorable shark attack movie scenes to date, just in time for Shark Week!
Although sharks in many of these films are depicted as evil predators, many of them are in fact preyed upon by humans.
According to the International Shark Attack File, there were 12 deaths from unprovoked shark attacks around the world last year. Yet, as File director George Burgess points out in a statement, "We're killing 30 [million] to 70 million sharks per year in fisheries -- who's killing who?"

Sharks prey on a variety of animals, but there are some lesser-known objects that sharks have also consumed. The Discovery Channel is airing their highly-anticipated Shark Week on Sunday, August 12th, and in anticipation, has released a list of some of the most bizarre shark snacks.
As of 2012, Shark Week has been on the air for 25 years. But for over 400 million years, sharks have been some of the biggest and baddest animals around. There are over 350 species, ranging in size from the enormous whale shark (the biggest fish in the sea!) to the teeny tiny deepsea dogfish shark.
Unfortunately, these kings of the sea need our help. According to advocacy group Oceana, "Of the 307 shark species assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Iucn), 50 are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, but only the white, whale and basking sharks are protected internationally under the Convention on International...
