A tale of magical realism slowly stripped of its magic, Raam Reddy’s gorgeously photographed, politically subversive “The Fable” trades in idyllic memories, but reveals their hidden dimensions. Set in 1989, on a lush Himalayan orchard in northeastern India, Reddy’s second feature follows a family of four, whose patriarch runs the once-colonial estate with the help of local villagers in his employ. Everything seems pristine and picture perfect until the sudden discovery of a single burnt apple blossom tree, followed by more mysteriously torched bushes the following day, leading to fears and suspicions that trickle downhill.
The film’s unbroken opening shot goes quickly from unassuming to striking. It follows estate owner Dev (Manoj Bajpayee) along his morning routine, through his house with his wife Nandini (Priyanka Bose), his precocious son Juju (Awan Pookot) and his lively dogs. The camera then tracks him to a workshop outside, where Dev straps...

After his debut feature “Titli” bowed at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard strand in 2014, Kanu Behl is back on the Croisette with “Agra,” which has its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight.
” ‘Agra’ grasps the reality of patriarchy in India through the prism of male sexual misery,” is how the festival describes the film. It follows Guru, a young single call center employee who still lives with his parents. Consumed by frustration, he plunges into a fever bordering on insanity, between pathetic fantasies, dating apps and hysterical self-harm. The film also explores the role property can play in a young man’s emancipation.
After the theatrical release of “Titli” in India and France in 2015, Behl began thinking about what to do next. “I realized that I had felt a certain sexual repression or an inability to express myself sexually in my adolescent years,” Behl told Variety. The filmmaker realized that he...

Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings adaptation has gotten a lot of press as the biggest budget TV series, but let us not forget the other TV adaptation based on an epic fantasy book series the streamer also has in the works. I’m talking, of course, about Amazon’s upcoming adaptation of Robert Jordan’s beloved Wheel of Time series, which is set to star Gone Girl‘s Rosamund Pike. Even though Amazon has already begun production on the second season of this fantasy epic, we’ve yet to get much insight into what the first season might look like or be. That changed (slightly) today, when Amazon debuted a first look poster and announced a premiere date for Wheel of Time as part of its Sdcc@Home panel.

Amazon is doubling down on The Wheel of Time.
The streamer has renewed the fantasy series for a second season ahead of the launch of the show. It comes as production has wrapped on season one in the Czech Republic.
It is the latest market in a long road for the adaptation of Robert Jordan’s books, which has been in development in one form or another for 20 years and that Amazon ordered to series in October 2018. Like many series, production of the drama was also hit by the pandemic.
The Wheel of Time, set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it, is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television and comes from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Chuck writer Rafe Judkins, who is showrunner and exec producer.

In “Mortal,” a film plagued by assorted crises and confusions of identity, one stands out at the very beginning: It’s an R-rated superhero movie that assumes its audience doesn’t know the meaning of its title. An introductory chyron helpfully offers the single dictionary definition “a human being,” without going into any of the others. That doesn’t bode well for a wealth of words or ideas in Norwegian director André Øvredal’s allegedly original adventure, which starts on a chilly, mildly intriguing note before sinking into its own puddle of very, very familiar reference points. This is an origin story we’ve seen before, and not just in the generic sense: Its protagonist is a strapping young man in Norway who reveals, early on, the power of thunder and lightning in his fingertips.
If you haven’t put two and two together, buckle up: You might be in for a ride.

In a world more than ten years into a historic Marvel Cinematic Universe run, the only word to describe someone outside the Hollywood system deciding to make a film about a young man with the same powers as Norse mythology’s most iconic God is bold. Why? Because it won’t really matter whether André Øvredal’s Mortal is good or not. He’s willfully going up against the zeitgeist and many audience members will scoff at whatever direction he’s taken simply because it diverts from what they think they know from a Disney-fied version of a religion they actually know little about. This reality isn’t unlike the one born from the Mouse House’s idealistic cartoons based on dark fairy tales nowhere near as sanitized. So give Øvredal a round of applause.

As the coronavirus pandemic rages on in India, boutique producer Yoodlee Films has managed to complete production of four projects while adhering to Covid-safe guidelines.
Kanu Behl, known for “Titli” which played Cannes in 2014 and “Binnu Ka Sapna” that won Clermont-Ferrand in 2019, is now is post-production on “Agra,” starring Rahul Roy (“Aashiqui”) and Priyanka Bose (“Lion”). The film that was at Busan’s Asian Project Market in 2015, explores confined spaces and suppressed sexuality in small town India, and is headed for the festival circuit.

"Sometimes bad things happen to good people." Lionsgate has debuted an official US trailer for the action thriller superpowers movie Mortal, made by Norwegian horror filmmaker André Øvredal. Described as "Chronicle meets X-Men meets Thor," this "origin story" is about a young man, Eric, who discovers he has God-like powers based on ancient Norwegian mythology. Nat Wolff stars along with Iben Akerlie as Christine, a young psychologist trying to figure out what really happened when the authorities go after him. They both go on the run, and Eric finally figures out who, or what exactly, he really is. The cast includes Priyanka Bose, Arthur Hakalahti, Anna Sedunova, and Per Egil Aske. This trailer isn't as polished as the first UK one, but it's still a good tease. Is he the God of Thunder, or is he something else? That line about "bad things" is intriguing. Can't he use his powers for good?...

Sadak 2 (Disney-Hotstar)
Starring Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur
Directed by Mahesh Bhatt
Believe it or not, Gulshan Grover in a walk-on part which he must have accepted for old times’ sake, plays a villain named Haathkatta. Because, get this, one of his hands has been severed.
Subtlety is certainly not one of the strong points of this belated sequel to a 1991 film that was ripped off from Martin Scorcese’s Taxi Driver. This Sadak swerves off the highway in no time at all. It is shocking that a script so shoddy and inane would be allowed to serve as a comeback to direction for Mahesh Bhatt, and that too to direct his star-daughter Alia Bhatt.
Both deserve better. So does Sanjay Dutt. So do we.
Sadak 2 is the kind of debilitating disappointment that Indian cinema suffers when the biggest of talents get together to deliver a certifiable dud.

Sadak 2 comes with a throwback whiff, though not a happy one. It reminds you of a lot of the kitsch that summed up Hindi commercial cinema once upon a time, which you thought had left the Bollywood screen for good.
Mahesh Bhatt returns to direction after over two decades with this film and we're not sure if that accounts for its dated, faded vibes. What one can be sure of is the fact that netizens who have been aggressively trolling the film and calling for its boycott, needn't have bothered. Bhatt's new film is so weak that chances are you will doze off long before the halfway mark.
The film is billed as an action drama that unfolds as a road trip, so you have three people in an SUV driving up mountain terrain. Any resemblance to very basic SUV advertising on TV might not be coincidental. Those bits...

Pareeksha (Zee5)
Starring Adil Hussain, Priyanka Bose, Shubham Jha, Sanjay Suri
Directed by Prakash Jha
The heart is completely in the right place. Pareeksha, director Prakash Jha’s best in years, is a heartwarming, unabashed tearjerker. It reminded me of one my favourite Shabana Azmi starrers Bhavna (1984) where the mother of a child goes to extreme lengths (prostitution) to educate her son. In Pareeksha, Adil Hussain as the all-giving father Buchi an honest righteous rickshaw puller, becomes a thief to accrue money for his son’s education in a posh school.
Some of the rickshaw pullers adversities are clearly excessive and the school’s stiff upperlipped board members are pure caricatures. Jha wins us over with the sheer velocity of the emotions expressed. This is his most emotional films since Mrityudand and by far the most pure-hearted.
There are no ‘bad people’ in the basti where Buchi’s prodigious child Bulbul(Shubham Jha,...
