The family of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has said an upcoming film inspired by her life is “grossly inaccurate” and misrepresents her work in a statement sent to journalists Tuesday afternoon.
In the statement, the family said it is “very concerned” by the film’s preliminary script, which they say contains “significant inaccuracies” and misrepresents Anna’s life, work, and family.
The film, previously titled Mother Russia, tells Anna’s story as a world-renowned journalist and human rights activist who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin.
Anna refused to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including being poisoned. She was ultimately murdered in the elevator of her block of flats, and it remains unclear who paid for the contract killing.
BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake (The Village) plays Anna in the biopic.

There was a time when a serial killer film, based on a novel written in part by James Patterson, would be a hot commodity in Hollywood. In fact, at one point, The Postcard Killers (the novel’s original name) had no less than famed cinematographer Janusz Kamiński signed to direct, after filmmakers like Paul Greengrass and Gavin O’Connor had flirted with helming. However, those incarnations were not to be, and this weekend The Postcard Killings (a retitling meant to make it seem even more generic) opened, destined to be quickly forgotten about. Without the same talent behind the camera, the flaws are even easier to spot than they otherwise would have been. Misguided, boring, and even often tasteless, this is a real dud. The movie is a crime drama, following a series of brutal murders. When his daughter is murdered, along with her husband, while on her honeymoon in Europe,...

Carnival Films, the production company behind “Downton Abbey,” tackles 1620s America with the series “Jamestown” — a production that took place nowhere near Virginia, site of the original Jamestown colony. Instead the show was shot at locations just outside Budapest, where a Southern drawl has seldom been heard.
Yet tax incentives often speak louder than words, as do low labor costs. That’s why it was decided to re-create the historic Jamestown settlement in Central Europe, where the team worked with period experts and studied historical records to build an accurate reproduction of the town and nearby village of the Native American Pamunkey tribe.
Unlike many location builds, which remain in place for a relatively short period of time, the “Jamestown” buildings are outdoor, stable structures intended to stand for years.

Imagine being trapped in a tiny ship heading for America in 1617, not only are you unsure of whether you’ll make it, you also have no idea who your future husband will be if you reach your destination. The only thing you can be sure of is that even if the man who has paid for your passage turns out to be a rapist or drunkard, there’s no going back.

Quite why director Gillies MacKinnon and writer Peter McDougall decided to remake the 1949 comedy Whisky Galore remains to be seen, and yet in spite of the initial apprehensions, it feels somewhat timely to celebrate the notion of community, and remaining spirited in the face of adversity. To be released in such close proximity to Their Finest seems apt too, for the latter celebrates productions of this very flavour, which find a semblance of hope amidst one of Britain’s darkest ages.
The war may be going on, but those who inhabit the Highlands and Islands of Scotland don’t seem particularly interested – that is until they run out of whisky. The locals eventually get wind of a transport ship heading in the direction of America, which just so happens to be carrying tens of thousands of cases of the aforementioned beverage, causing then to concoct a plan.

Witchcraft captures an obscure subgenre of horror that’s rarely represented through similar methods (look at such varying titles as All Cheerleaders Die/The Witch/Lords Of Salem). Halloween imagery always includes green-faced, cackling witches, broomsticks and all, but films tend to focus more on their cultish behavior.
Ireland’s latest genre effort, Cherry Tree, is another such film about dark magic and satanic worship, yet even with Clive-Barker-inspired visuals, these deceiving looks are hollow to the core. It’s as terrifying as something like The Moth Diaries or Embrace Of The Vampire, which of course means there’s no terror at all – just centipedes, witches, and a fixation on cherries that’ll have your empty tummy rumbling in dissatisfaction.
Naomi Battrick stars as Faith, a misunderstood loner who struggles with her social status. Matters only worsen when she learns that her already ailing father, Sean (Sam Hazeldine), has received...

When the mysteriously alluring Sissy Young becomes her field hockey coach, Faith finds a compassionate spirit and much-needed mother figure. The film begins with a struggling family and a witches' coven. The film stars Anna Walton (Mutant Chronicles), Sam Hazeldine (The Monuments Men), Naomi Battrick and Patrick Gibson.
