Fear is the Rider, described as an ode to “gore-drenched Ozploitation slashers of the 1970s,” sees a woman pursued in the Australian Outback by a pack of ruthless serial killers. While that already has our attention, Deadline reports the nod to gory slashers has lined up an impressive cast so far.
Ben Mendelsohn (Star Wars: Rogue One), Abbey Lee, Toby Wallace (The Bikeriders) and Eliza Scanlen (Caddo Lake) have been cast in lead roles.
As for plot, the film follows “a lone woman, searching for her missing mother, who is pursued into the Australian Outback by a terrifying family of serial killers, with only an ex-con and a young girl willing to help her.”
Fear is the Rider is an adaptation of the novel The Hunted by Gabriel Bergmoser, written and directed by John Michael McDonagh‘s (The Guard).

Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) is loathe to repeat anyone else, so when his writer’s block finds him spitting out quotes from bigger, better, far more well-known philosophers, he knows things are going badly. Things have, in fact, been going badly for a very long time, as is prone to happen when someone moves to an uninhabited island and attempts to carve out a new world order. Still, had Friedrich — a very real person — been a bit more comfortable with the idea of repeating someone else, he likely would have found plenty of comfort in Jean-Paul Sartre’s perpetually prescient observation that “Hell is other people.”
Such is the thrust of Ron Howard’s darkly funny “Eden,” a fact-based story that follows what happened after Friedrich and his partner Dora Strauch (Vanessa Kirby) moved to a Galapagos Island after the end of World War I (and the start of...

Exclusive: It doesn’t happen often, but Ron Howard is here in Toronto today to unveil at the Toronto Film Festival his new film Eden. What’s unusual for the Oscar winner whose films have grossed billions, is that the film is up for grabs for distribution as an acquisition title. Eden might seem a close cousin to his harrowing Thai rescue film Thirteen Lives, but this one has a sinister edge unusual for Howard. Based on a true story, Eden stars Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Bruehl, Ana de Armas, Toby Wallace and Felix Kammerer as the members of three parties who flee post-wwi civilization to start over and build paradise on the Galapagos Islands. It devolves into a Lord of the Flies battle to survive the elements, and each other. Eden‘s world premiere is set for 5:45 p.m. tonight at Roy Thomson Hall.

Why do we bestow upon Hollywood’s finest the name of ‘stars’? Consider this for a moment; it is not mere hyperbole: these big screen icons exude an aura that can carry charismatic waves across an entire room, drawing us into their gravitational pull. And thus, it won’t be wrong to say that Austin Butler, the Golden Globe-touting charmer, incarnates this star-quality phenomenon.
For instance, last month, he mesmerized and gave Sarah Harris, host of The Project, a rosy-cheeked tizzy. He worked his magic with the finesse of a maestro, making laser-focused eye contact and using a voice that seemed to channel Elvis Presley himself—all without revealing too much about his game.

A masterclass in magnetism, Butler’s smoldering charm was not only palpable to the enamored interviewer but also to the legion of fans who found themselves orbiting his star power in the comments.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published September 1, 2023 after the film’s world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. The movie was originally to be released in December 2023 by 20th Century Studios before being derailed by the Hollywood strikes. Focus Features is now distributing and released it in theaters Friday.
Biker movies are almost a subgenre of films unto themselves, beginning with Marlon Brando’s The Wild One in the early ’50s and then through all those Aip exploitation titles of the ’60s including The Wild Angels, Hells Angels on Wheels and many more, notably Tom Laughlin’s predecessor to Billy Jack called Born Losers. It all culminated with Easy Rider with Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, which became the Citizen Kane of biker cinema.

This weekend sees the release of a brand new film from an acclaimed director with an all-star cast that’s a cinematic “call-back” to a genre that’s gone Awol from the multiplexes and even the drive-ins (still enjoying a pandemic “bump) for the last few decades. And no, I’m not talking about the Western, which gallops back with Kevin Costner in the saddle next week. Well, there are a few comparisons, though these flicks began in the fifties and were an exploitation staple (a fave of the “passion pit”) into the swingin’ 70s. Going for more speed than the “oaters” were the “motorcycle gang” action epics, which have played a big role in the futuristic world of Mad Max and Furioisa. Now, this flick has those elements, but it’s more of a historical overview following some guys, and a few gals, who really thought of themselves as...

Jeff Nichols’ newest film, The Bikeriders, has some true elements to it. Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Boyd Holbrook, Toby Wallace and more have finally hit the big screen after a new distribution deal and release date postponed the movie’s release in 2023. Butler stars in the film as Benny, a man who loves motorcycles and finds himself drawn to the Chicago Vandals, a club of bikers that frequently gathers to drive around and be in community.
Tom Hardy plays Johnny, founder of the Vandals. Johnny’s righthand man is Brucie (Damon Herriman), but Benny holds his own as a figure of authority within the group. Benny brings Kathy (Jodie Comer) into the group, and she tells a lot of the oral history of the Vandals to Mike Faist’s Danny.

Austin Butler is not a man to rush his words. Every line of dialogue feels like it’s preceded by a pregnant pause or a considered stare while the star rolls the words around in his mouth. This abandonment of immediacy feels well-suited for The Bikeriders, a glacial study of oil-stained Americana, sumptuously crafted by writer-director Jeff Nichols.
It’s a bold choice to stretch a tale about a gang of road-ripping reprobates over the best part of two hours. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s book of the same name, the film follows an interpretation of the author, played by a fuzzy-faced Mike Faist, as he documents the fictionalised group — known here as The Vandals — as they booze, brawl and burn rubber across their native Chicago. Central to his story is Butler’s Benny, a quiet, contemplative loyalist, and his conflict-creating relationships with quasi-father-figure Johnny and partner Kathy (Jodie Comer...

Kathryn Newton channeled her inner “Lisa Frankenstein” for a special screening of the film at the Hollywood Athletic Club, donning a dramatic black corseted Vera Wang gown with exaggerated tulle hips.
“There was no other dress option. I have a little heart I took from my last boyfriend,” Newton told Variety on the black carpet, pointing to her blood-red heart-shaped choker and giggling, “Just kidding – I don’t have a boyfriend!”
In the film from Zelda Williams, Newton’s Lisa and a re-animated corpse dubbed “The Creature” (Cole Sprouse) embark on a murderous journey to make him whole by claiming some of his missing body parts from the living. Even though Sprouse doesn’t speak a single word in Diablo Cody’s campy script, communicating only through grunts, Newton says they had no trouble selling their chemistry.
“Have you looked at Cole Sprouse? It’s very easy to have chemistry.

The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.
The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace, Tara Morice, Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).

The word Finestkind has no specific meaning, and we’re told so by one of the protagonists of the film, which is also called the same. It could be something cool, something exceptional, or something much different. Although in the film, Finestkind happens to be the name of a fishing boat, which plays a very (actually the most) important part in the narrative. Director Brian Helgeland’s 2023 crime drama, starring names like Ben Foster, Toby Wallace, Jenna Ortega, and the indomitable Tommy Lee Jones, is a film where you can see a lot of effort. This is a very personal story for the director, as he has been waiting almost three decades to tell it. As touching as that sounds, what we have here is a film that’s all over the place with the narrative. But the story it tells can be described with a term I generally refrain from using: heart.

Plot: A law school-bound University grad (Toby Wallace) decides to spend his summer working with his fisherman half-brother (Ben Foster) in the hopes of finding adventure. But, he soon realizes that despite the rewarding work, you can only push things so far, as debts pile up and the brothers flirt with organized crime.
Review: You can understand where Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind is going from the start. As soon as fresh-faced Charlie (Toby Wallace) convinces his taciturn older half-brother, Tom (Ben Foster), to let him join his crew of hard-living fishermen, you know it’s not going to end with a pat on the back for a job well done. This is especially true once he lays eyes on a heartbreaking local girl, Mabel (Jenna Ortega), who he spies doing a drug deal with a crew member. Yet, even though nothing terribly surprising happens over the two-hour running time, it...

What’s Good: Jenna Ortega, Tommy Lee Jones and Ben Foster are always a delight.
What’s Bad: The movie doesn’t know what it wants to be, or what it is, and the entire plot feels pointless.

Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. He’s now 62. “The joke is that I wrote it before Toby Wallace and Jenna Ortega were born and Ben Foster was 10 years old. It’s very strange, but everything happens for a reason. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.
