If you know anything about the independent film world, it won’t be surprising to discover the project writer/director Justin McConnell is hoping to get off the ground at the start of Clapboard Jungle isn’t going to be much further along in its pre-production process four years later. That’s the nature of the beast. You’re going to have moments of elation when it appears that funds have come through and the inevitable spiral downward when those plans evaporate. You’re going to hit your head against a wall to draw blood from that stone until you realize stagnation isn’t doing anyone any favors when you have other ideas that may bear fruit quicker. Guess what, though? The next one probably won’t get made before the end of this journey either.
To see that adversity first-hand is what drives McConnell’s documentary about the industry...

Seeing is believing, but hearing can be too. The newest season of Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid’s “Tales From Beyond the Pale” has delivered audio tales about spooky goings on in such far-flung locales as the Stanley Hotel and the film industry itself, with this week’s two new episodes — which IndieWire can exclusively premiere — taking place in rural Pennsylvania and Montreal, respectively.

“Barricade” finds a just-married couple on their honeymoon, where the aftereffects of nearby fracking unleash something chthonic from the ground; Fessenden wrote the 23-minute tale, which features the voice talents of Roxanne Benjamin, Jeremy Gardner, Tony Todd, Samuel Zimmerman. It’s like a short film in sonic form, with the details of just what those beings look like left to the listener’s imagination.

Montreal’s genre festival ran from July 17-Aug 6 and saw audiences of more than 129,000; its Frontières co-production market also drew a record attendance, up 30% on 2013.
With more than 129,000 people attending screenings and events over its 18th year, Fantasia International Film Festival co-director Mitch Davis (pictured) has marked the event as an “extraordinary” year.
Speaking to Screen, Davis was particularly pleased that the smaller films shone through.
“We showcased just over 160 feature films, which is more than our norm and is, frankly, no subtle number,” said Davis. “The worry in doing that is the chancing that certain so-called smaller films could somehow fall between the cracks.
“I’m thrilled to say that this didn’t happen. It’s often the smaller independent discovery titles that we have some of the strongest love for and we go the extra mile to make sure they stand out and even then, anything could happen. Happily, a good...

Co-festival director Mitch Davis [pictured] talks to Screen about this year’s Fantasia, which wrapped yesterday [Aug 7].
Having announced record attendance figures for its 17th edition [see separate story here], Fantasia International Film Festival co-festival director Mitch Davis has hailed this year as “exceptionally strong”.
Talking to Screen, Davis (also co-director of international programming at the festival) said that almost every film of its 130-strong lineup managed to prosper. “The commercial blockbuster titles were expectedly big but never at the expense of the left field discoveries or low budget indies, which frequently screened to capacity crowds as well.”
He continued: “Seeing good filmmaking come to life in front of audiences who truly connect with it, and love it as much as we do, is an ultimate reward for any curating team.”

Already one of the buzz titles after its World Premiere today at SXSW, the VHS documentary Rewind This! will be represented in the U.S. by Cinetic Rights Management. The deal was helped along by our good friend Stephanie Trepanier of Evokative Films who took her boutique distribution label and transformed her company into an international sales consultancy. Crm provides film sales representation for digital media. For example, the company is an Apple-approved digital content aggregator for the iTunes store. They also boast access to other digital distribution platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, Xbox, Playstation and Cinemanow. By the way, in case you're interested, Stephanie is also representing Chelsea Peters' debut, the slasher film The Night Stalkers, and, And, Spring, the supernatural romance-horror film and sophomore effort from...

Canada’s Evokative Films is reorientating its operations towards international sales consultancy. Evokative’s founder Stephanie Trepanier is at the Efm with two new projects: Chelsea Peters’ slasher film The Night Stalkers, produced by Ryan Turek and set to shoot this summer, and supernatural horror-romance Spring from filmmaking duo Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Resolution).
Vmi Worldwide has sold North American rights of the action-sci-fi-horror movie Gallowwalkers, starring Wesley Snipes, to Wrekin Hill Entertainment as well as Japan to Presidio and the Middle East to Phoenicia. As you may recall, this long shelved movie centers on a cursed gunman who incurs the wrath of undead warriors after he kills the gang that murdered his lover.
