The creator of Maternal has addressed its untimely cancellation by ITV.
It was revealed earlier this month that the channel would not commission a second run of Maternal.
Maternal, starring Parminder Nagra, Lara Pulver and Lisa McGrillis, followed three doctors who return to work in a post-Covid landscape after their maternity leave ends.
The drama began in January 2023, but sadly, for fans of the show, not enough viewers tuned in to warrant a second run.
On Tuesday (11 April), creator Jacqui Honess-Martin posted a broken-heart emoji on Twitter, writing: “We had a lot more to say.”
Explaining the reasoning behind ITV’s decision, the writer continued: “The show needed a high number of viewers for @ITV to sell advertising to break even. Maternal didn’t get that number.
“It hurts that it ends here but I am incredibly proud of the show, grateful and a bit amazed that we got to do it at all.

The crisis in the NHS is at the forefront of our minds. Nurses are striking. There are record ambulance waiting times. Even the prime minister uses private healthcare. The BBC’s adaptation of Adam Kay’s This Is Going To Hurt, with its shocking depiction of young doctors on a maternity ward, made the crisis into primetime viewing. Now, ITV’s new drama Maternal, in which three women try to balance exhausting careers in healthcare alongside early-stage motherhood, has raised the stakes – and my heart rate.
The series opens with paediatrician Maryam’s (Parminda Nagra) first day back at work. Having taken two years off to have kids back-to-back, she dreams that she’s sprinting across the ward in pyjamas and wakes up in a cold sweat. Before she leaves, her well-meaning husband tells her she looks beautiful. “I don’t want to look beautiful, I want to look competent,...

Maternal, ITV’s new drama about motherhood and practising medicine, opens with an alarming scene of choreographed chaos. Three female doctors, overwhelmed and hideously underslept, attempt to feed their rascal children breakfast, dress them for day care, and separate them from their overspilling toy boxes in time for drop-off. For each, it’s the first day back from maternity leave, though this hectic fire drill, or a version of it, will recreate itself every morning, just as it does in homes dotted throughout the UK and beyond (my own included). Maryam (played by Parminder Nagra) is a paediatric registrar returning to work after almost two years of continuous maternity leave. She dares to ask aloud the question that can doom a working mum – or any stripe of new mum, for that matter – to crushing guilt. “What if I hate being away from them?” she shouts to her husband across the...

Exclusive: Animated drama series Pantheon, which stars the voices of Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Dano and Taylor Schilling, is the latest series to be scrapped at AMC Networks.
The series has been canceled after one season, despite a two-season order, and pulled from AMC’s streaming service as part of the company’s cost-cutting drive. The second season, which had been produced, will not air.
Pantheon joins shows such as Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and the second seasons of 61st Street and Moonhaven, which were all axed as part of a one-time tax write-down at the end of last year.
This write-down features around 400M of content and was revealed in an SEC filing in December.
“As a result of the Plan, the programming assessments pertain to a broad mix of owned and licensed content, including legacy television series and films that will no longer be in active rotation...

The Witcher has been a long-running franchise in the fantasy fandom. It was first a series of novels and short stories which spawned a series of popular graphic novels. In 2001, the idea was adapted into a film and TV series as The Hexer, and a series of board games were launched.
However, what really propelled its popularity has been the trilogy of video games developed by CD Projekt Red in 2007. With that in the collective consciousness, it was only a matter of time before a series like Netflix's The Witcher, featuring Henry Cavill, became a reality.
With a second season premiering in Dec 2021, Netflix is dropping a tantalizing animated feature that provides considerable backstory, and world-building for the world Cavill's Geralt introduced us to.
As a quick refresher, Geralt of Rivia, Cavill's character and the titular star of the live-action series, is one of the last witchers, monster hunters with supernaturally enhanced abilities.

This The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf review contains no spoilers.
The animated fantasy world of The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf feels trapped in an 83-minute film. No doubt it is lovely to look at as a Netflix Original Anime—a stricter definition of “anime” is stretching it, being applied to the work of a South Korea-based animation company. For as much as Studio Mir’s smatterings of color and movement will please the eye as it did with Legend of Korra and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, the mission of the story is lost in a haze.
Produced and penned by Witcher staff writer Beau DeMayo, Nightmare of the Wolf focuses on Vesemir, the mentor of the star of the Netflix series, Geralt. Vesemir is a slight antithesis to the grumpish Geralt played by a grimy and guttural Henry Cavill. The man who will become Geralt’s...

It’s summer 2011 and Arwel W Jones is causing a commotion in the Brecon Beacons. Cars overtake his forklift along the narrow country road, puzzling at the sight of a living room wall travelling solo past hedgerows and moorland. The wall belongs to Irene Adler, sometime adversary/paramour of Sherlock Holmes. It’s on its way to stand behind Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Lara Pulver in the series two opener of Sherlock, to help to tell their story and to make them look good.
Storytelling and making things look good are Jones’s job. As Sherlock’s production designer, his art department conceived, created and dressed the spaces where it all happened. Take design out of the mix and the actors would have been delivering their lines in an empty studio, like the one Jones posted a picture of in early 2011. That picture took him from 200 to 5K followers in under a week.

For Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas, an on-screen fairy tale paved the way for one of their own. The actress of Big Love, He's Just Not That Into You and Zootopia fame first met her life partner on the set of Once Upon a Time in 2011, though timing was not initially on their side. They had an "immediate connection," a source later told E! News back in early 2012. However, at the time, Dallas was married to Lara Pulver while Goodwin was engaged to Joey Kern. The co-stars, who famously played Snow White and Prince Charming for six seasons of the ABC series, formed a friendship. "They were shooting in Canada together and because they were both away...

The Underworld franchise will live again in a new television series...
A good vampire story never truly ends. Like the eternal succubi themselves, a yarn about Nosferatu merely mutates and transforms, but it never stops. How else do you explain all those bloody Dracula movies? So it’s not really a surprise that Underworld will live again as a television series after enjoying a lengthy (and long-in-the-tooth) five-film franchise.
Indeed, Deadline broke the news that longtime Underworld patron Len Wiseman and his production company Sketch Films is moving forward with a previously rumored Underworld television series that’ll target a premium cable/streaming market. Wiseman gave a quote confirming as much.
“The series will be a pretty big departure from the films,” Wiseman said. “I don’t want to say it’s more adult, but it’s definitely less comic book in its tone and character.”

While appearing at London’s Comic-Con this past weekend, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch spilled on the detective’s love life – or lack thereof.
The Doctor Strange and soon-to-be Avengers: Infinity War actor fielded questions about his turn as the famous super-sleuth, and even touched base on the speculation linking him with the vacant (?) Bond 25 role. Indeed, Cumberbatch is a name that’s been tossed around numerous times before when it comes to James Bond, along with the likes of Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, and even Jason Statham, but all signs currently point to Daniel Craig returning for one last hurrah in time for 2019.
Getting back to Sherlock, though, during last weekend’s panel, Benedict Cumberbatch addressed the romantic element underpinning the hit BBC detective series, joking that there’s only one true partner for Mr. Holmes.
“Now, there’s only one choice, isn’t there? Come on,” he told the audience of fans,...

Not only is the British actor quite the heartthrob, but his relationship with the singer marked one of the first times he had ever gone public with a relationship. Actually, his only other confirmed girlfriend was his Wallander costar Susannah Fielding (pictured below). The two dated for a few years but eventually broke up in 2011, when Tom reportedly decided to focus on his career. Following their split, he explained to The Daily Mail, "Acting just demands everything and if you don't give it everything, there will be someone behind you who will." Image Source: Getty / Michael Tran He may have kept pretty mum about his love life in the past, but that hasn't stopped the dating rumors from swirling. However as the saying goes, time heals and in the case of these movies that seems to be true. Not only has it been long enough for audiences to forget the risible fourth film, but the break in production also seems to have revitalised the filmmakers too – and this time round we have a film that truly lives up to the “vampires vs. werewolves” premise proffered so many years ago.

Underworld 5 certainly has its problems. But it's a whole lot of fun...
If you’ve seen any of the previous four Underworld movies, you probably think you know what to expect from the latest instalment. And lord knows you’d be entirely right. A never-ending war between vampires and werewolves? Check. Post-Matrix gunplay? Of course. More leather outfits than the after party at London Alternative Market? Without a doubt. So why should you care at all about the latest in this aggressively generic franchise?
Well, that depends. Do you like fun? Because that’s what I find myself having here.
I know, I know. 'This movie is fun' is often a way of saying 'This movie is demonstrably bad if you think about it, so can we just not think about it so I don’t admit I like something stupid?' And while that may be partly true here,...

The last time we saw Kate Beckinsale’s blood-sucking, wolf-slaying, blade swishing Selene she was battling a digital were-blob in a car park at the arse end of Underworld: Awakening: the abominable third sequel which belted the franchise into apparent oblivion. Failing to keep her promise of reclaiming the world from Lycans, made during Awakening’s tepid finale, Selene vanished from our screens. Five years later and following a staggering turn in Love and Friendship, Kate Beckinsale returns, back on autopilot, into her comfort zone and to the role that made her famous. While half a decade can’t quite waft away the stench of its putrid predecessor, Underworld: Blood Wars is surprisingly decent and easily the best of the franchise so far.

Kate Beckinsale casts off the kudos of classy costume drama Love & Friendship to slip back into black leather for a fifth time
A persistent surreal silliness lends some interest to this latest film in the interminable Underworld action vampire-horror franchise series: the fifth, in fact. It’s the franchise that simply refuses to die.
Kate Beckinsale reprises her kinkily black-leather-clad role of the vampire Selene. She and the other vampires are now threatened by the lupine Lycans, who do lots of CGI transformation from human to beast and back again. They are led by the malign Marius (Tobias Menzies); Selene has on her side the hunky creature of the shadows David (Theo James), yet faces treachery of the outrageously décolleté sort from Semira (Lara Pulver), who is rocking a series of revealing outfits. Charles Dance comes on, selling his preposterous lines with absolute conviction and professionalism and giving everything a residual Game-of-Thrones vibe.

For 13 years we’ve been caught in the middle of Kate Beckinsale’s Lycan-hunting warfare, a streamlined franchise that’s sustained many tests of time, especially Beckinsale’s ageless taking to vampire purity. I wondered who dared asked for a fifth chapter in this R-rated Twilight for adults, and I was answered by a moderately full NYC movie theater audience, who hooted and hollered as Selene waged bloody retribution against both hairy and pale factions. People turned out for what’s essentially an H&M Bdsm orgy that’s interrupted by werewolves before any hanky panky can begin – but was their perseverance rewarded? By the grace of Nosferatu, Underworld: Blood Wars could have been way, Way worse. I’ll admit that.
As previously noted, Beckinsale once again returns as the famed “Death Dealer” Selene. Even with no memory of her daughter Eve’s whereabouts, she’s still hunted by Lycan...
