Actor Sung Kang is most widely known for playing fan-favorite Han in the Fast & Furious franchise, among other roles outside of horror, including a voice role in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. That he chose gateway horror Shaky Shivers for his feature directorial debut might seem unconventional. However, after speaking with the filmmaker, the charming tale of friendship among zombies and cryptids quickly reveals itself as the perfect vehicle for his debut.
Shaky Shivers stars Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer) as Lucy and Karen, best friends grappling with a potential werewolf curse. With snobby customers, zombies, cryptids, and more, the friends have their hands full this summer.
With Shaky Shivers releasing in theaters for one-night-only on September 21 from Fathom Events, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Kang about his first outing in the director’s seat; specifically, why the actor-turned-director chose this horror-comedy script.

Plot: Fearing a witch’s curse is going to make her turn into a werewolf, Lucy heads to an abandoned camp with her friend Karen to wait out the full moon. But lycanthropy may be the least of their problems.
Review: The horror comedy Shaky Shivers takes its title from a cold, sweet concoction created by ice cream shop worker Karen (VyVy Nguyen), but we never actually learn what ingredients she has put into this treat. The movie itself is quite a blend of sub-genres, featuring lycanthropy, zombies, a witch, cultists, a Trapper Keeper Necronomicon, a Bigfoot enthusiast… and maybe even an appearance by Bigfoot itself.
Karen works at the aforementioned ice cream shop with her pal Lucy (Brooke Markham), and when a witchy woodsy woman called Mama Nature (played by Erin Daniels of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses) comes in after closing time, wielding an odd puppet and asking for food,...

Audiences who know Sung Kang from the Fast and the Furious films might not expect him to pivot to a low-budget horror-comedy for his directorial debut. But in the height of Covid in 2020, the actor, who plays Han in the Fast films, spent five weeks at a closed-down Girl Scout camp shooting Shaky Shivers, a ‘90s-set monster mash that is an ode to the types of ‘80s films he grew up loving.
“I didn’t want to do something really heavy,” Kang says. “I think a lot of people expected, because of my association to these big blockbuster action movies, that I would do some action film.”

Sung Kang ditches the fast and furious lifestyle for his directorial debut Shaky Shivers — a delightful gateway horror treat that recalls the Goosebumps television show or Are You Afraid of the Dark. Its Young Adult vibes bring two girls face to face with werewolf curses, zombification, and friendly ice cream parlor wholesomeness. Some might see the "gateway" description and wince, but that's not meant as a zinger — Shaky Shivers is filled with giggles and quirky horror introductions that make the genre accessible to all audiences. There's something Nickelodeon After Midnight about it all, as Kang turns a low-budget buddy comedy with teeth into a sweet tale about friendship, brainfreeze, and choosing our destinies over giving up to lesser fates.
Brooke Markham stars as Luci, who we meet handcuffed to a steering wheel in best friend Karen's (VyVy Nguyen) vehicle. Why? Because Luci fears she's been cursed by a woodland vagabond...

Paramount+ has canceled the animated comedy after one season. It comes a week after the ten episode show, which premiered on September 16, wrapped up its season on November 4.
Creator Brad Neely broke the news on social media, “The Harper House is cancelled. There is one difference from last year’s virtual event, however: It will be an abbreviated one, taking place over three days, from Friday, July 23 through Sunday, July 25 — but there are still a bevy of TV show panels on the lineup, which will be streaming for free via YouTube.
Note: Yes, there will again be a DC Fandome virtual event this year (on Oct. 16), where in 2020 shows such as The Flash, Titans, Batwoman...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “BoJack Horseman” Season 5, Episode 2, “The Dog Days Are Over.”]
Beneath the animated, anthropomorphic, and pun-tastic exterior of“BoJack Horseman” is a brilliantly satirical series that conveys an uncanny authenticity when it comes to representing the troubled side of the human emotional experience. That’s why it rang false that the Vietnamese American character Diane Nguyen was voiced by white actress Alison Brie. In January, creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg tweeted out a mea culpa about the cartoon whitewashing, and discussed with IndieWire how his “colorblind” casting didn’t result in inclusivity or proper representation, which he was determined to improve on his show.
While “BoJack Horseman” has increased its casting of people of color, in “The Dog Days Are Over” the show was able to increase inclusivity behind the scenes as well. In the episode, Diane is left adrift after divorcing Mr. Peanutbutter and heads to Vietnam, where her parents are from.

Cue the handmaids.
The Tribeca Film Festival announced its second annual Tribeca TV program on Thursday and it includes a range of world premieres, popular show returns and a slate of independent pilots. One of the most highly anticipated debuts will be Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Tribeca 2017 Lineup: New Fillms From Alex Gibney, Azazel Jacobs and Laurie Simmons Lead the Eclectic Mix
The series has been in the news lately, and not only because it will premiere soon. The dystopian story about a government forcing fertile women to become breeders for their high-ranking officials has struck a nerve among progressive women who are wary of having their health and reproductive rights controlled. Recently, protestors dressed in the handmaids’ red robes and white bonnets made an appearance in the Texas Senate gallery as its members were passing abortion legislation.

"MisSpelled" tells the tale of "five very different young women who must learn to work together after they mysteriously acquire magical powers." Gabriela Banus, Carina Perez, Chelsea Jones, Vyvy Nguyen star as the witches along with Lindsey McDowell, who also wrote and created the new web series. On her inspiration to tell the story of five young women of color who are witches, McDowell says: "For one, I wanted an opportunity to work with some of my friends who are all so talented but we never get the chance to play the ‘series’ leads or even audition for parts that are outside of what the industry has already tried to ‘typecast’ us as.
