The two men stand shoulder to shoulder, posing for the camera almost like father and son. On the left is former President Donald Trump, flashing that money grin, the light glinting off his golden-yellow tie. On the right is the Republican congressman who, more than any other, has hitched his fortunes to Trump and positioned himself to fill the vacuum left at the top of the Republican Party after Trump’s 2020 defeat. To Trump, he’s known as “my Kevin.” To the rest of us, he’s Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California.

Update, 1:12 Pm Pt: CNN responded to a legal threat from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign by comparing it to the type of letter they would get “from countries like Venezuela or other regimes where there is little or no respect for a free and independent media.”
The Trump campaign earlier asked CNN for a retraction of and apology for a poll that showed Joe Biden with a 14-point lead. On Monday, Trump said that he retained pollster John McLaughlin to refute the claims.
“To my knowledge, this is the first time in its 40 year history that CNN has been threatened with legal action because an American politician or campaign did not like CNN’s polling results,” wrote David C. Vigilante, the network’s executive vice president and general counsel.
Vigilante also criticized McLaughlin, noting that in 2014 “his firm famously reported that Eric Cantor was leading his primary challenger Dave Brat...

President Donald Trump lashed out at a CNN poll on Monday that showed presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden with a 14-point lead.
But in contrast to past claims that the polls are “fake,” Trump this time said that he retained a pollster, John McLaughlin, to examine the CNN and other polls from ABC and NBC. McLaughlin claimed that the networks are “reporting biased polls” and it “must be intentional.”
Trump wrote on Twitter, “I have retained highly respected pollster, McLaughlin & Associates, to analyze todays CNN Poll (and others), which I felt were Fake based on the incredible enthusiasm we are receiving. Read analysis for yourself. This is the same thing they and others did when we defeated Crooked Hillary Clinton in 2016. They are called Suppression Polls, and are put out to dampen enthusiasm. Despite 3 ½ years of phony Witch Hunts, we are winning, and will close it out on November 3rd!

A 28-year-old first-time progressive candidate, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, defeated Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-n.Y.) on Tuesday, scoring one of the year’s biggest political upsets.
Crowley, who was a member of the Democratic leadership and was considered a possible successor to Nancy Pelosi, has been in the House since 1999, and has represented the 14th district since 2013. He was the chair of the House Democratic Caucus since 2017.
Ocasio-Cortez‘s victory was quickly compared to 2014 primary upset in which Dave Brat ousted Eric Cantor, then the No. 2 Republican in the House, from his Virginia district seat.
NY1 captured Ocasio-Cortez’s reaction as she realized she was winning the race.

Facing widespread criticism over his waffling on immigration this week, Donald Trump appeared on CNN on Thursday night to set the record straight - sort of. The Gop nominee shifted back to his usual hardline position on the issue, telling CNN's Anderson Cooper, "There is no path to legalization unless [undocumented immigrants] leave the country and come back." "When they come back in, then they can start paying taxes, but there is no path to legalization unless they leave the country and then come back," he added. "So if you haven't committed a crime and you've been here for 15 years, and you have a family here,...

Third candidate's a charm? With many Republicans unwilling to give their votes to presumptive nominee Donald Trump or Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, some are now pinning their hopes on a potential third-party candidate. In a Facebook manifesto published Thursday morning, rising-star Republican and Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse argued that neither political party is working and called for a one-term, "problem-solver" candidate for this "messy moment." "Why shouldn't America draft an honest leader who will focus on 70% solutions for the next four years? The Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors’ former ties to Hollywood’s unions are coming into question in light of its recent decision to stand by its award to ultra-conservative presidential hopeful Senator Ted Cruz.
The decision to give the Texas Republican its American Spirit Award had polarized the caucus’ membership, with internal objections leading to an emergency meeting of the executive committee Monday, which upheld the decision to honor Cruz. The caucus traditionally hands out American Spirit Awards to a Republican and a Democrat (California Governor Jerry Brown appears to be the choice on the liberal side this year, though it is unclear whether the Cruz controversy would affect his decision to accept it). Other prominent conservatives have received the award in the past, including include Congressmen Darrell Issa (R-ca) and Eric Cantor (R-va), but none has been as polarizing or anti-union as Cruz.

Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) may have squashed his chances of launching a bid for the presidency in 2016 the other day when he referred to his “gaydar” when talking about Rep. Eric Cantor.
Brian Schweitzer Says 'Gaydar' Goes Off With Eric Cantor
There have been numerous theories offered as to why Cantor lost his congressional seat to Tea Party candidate David Brat in Virginia’s 7th district. Schweitzer, however, is the first to suggest that it was Cantor’s sexuality that did him in at the polls.
“If you were just a regular person, you turned on the TV, and you saw Eric Cantor talking, I would say—and I'm fine with gay people, that's all right—but my gaydar is 60-70 percent,” Schweitzer said in the interview with the National Journal.

Calling themselves “a movement on fire,” the video shows viewers the great peril that awaits patriotic citizens if we don’t do something about entitlements, fast.

After identifying the complex objections that some House members have to a version of the bill that enjoys broad support in the Senate, Alex Wagner noted that even some Republican leaders, like House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-va), have voiced their support for some form of a Vawa. However, she said that Cantor’s Southern make her doubt his sincerity.

The Second Inauguration of President Barack Obama marked the beginning of a brave new American era of bipartisan governance and well-reasoned political discourse. No it didn’t. But it was a hell of a party, a grand and justifiably pompous power-pageant which reached an emotional climax when the stirring voice of the world’s most powerful human being echoed throughout the National Mall. But enough about Beyoncé. Here are some key moments frozen in time from a cold day in Washington:

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor made an appearance on Wednesday's Fox & Friends, where he touched upon a couple of topics, including both candidates' vows to visit Israel, with the President's people saying he plans to visit the Holy Land in his second term, and whether Senator Dianne Feinstein was “Cory Bookered” by Democrats after making remarks about White House intelligence leaks.

The outside Republican group "Young Guns" has launched a new campaign to reward political allies who vote for leadership priorities. But don’t worry it’s not bribery—just a ripe combination of politicking and legislating.
Founded in 2007 by three House Republicans — Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) — the Yg Network first gained media notoriety earlier this year after campaigning for the 36-year Indiana incumbent, Dick Lugar, in the Indiana primary. If you didn't catch that he had been a member of congress for 36 years, then let me reiterate that Dick Lugar was anything but a "young gun." (No matter, Dick Lugar lost that race.)
In the months since then, the Yg Network has launched environmental and women’s issues campaigns. The "Woman Up" campaign was particularly humorous — but not because of the stupid play on the term "man up,...

Jimmy Kimmel, back in Los Angeles after conquering the White House Corespondents’ Dinner, says the high-wire act of headlining the prestigious annual “nerd prom” was like “having a baby.”
“The most terrified I’ve ever been was the first time I went on Letterman — this was number two,” Kimmel tells EW.com.
The White House did not put any restrictions on his jokes, Kimmel says, nor did anybody ask to see his material ahead of time. While the comedian was worried about his jokes being funny, Kimmel says he wasn’t inordinately concerned about the president’s reaction, having seen...

Richmond, Va. — Tareq Salahi, a Virginia vintner who achieved notoriety for crashing a White House party and later saw his wife run off with a guitarist for the rock band Journey, now says he will run as a Republican for governor of Virginia.
In a move that provoked rolled eyes and guffaws within Richmond's political chattering classes, Salahi filled out and submitted a candidacy declaration Tuesday. It came one day after another Gop candidate for governor, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, sued Salahi and his winery. The suit claims they cheated customers who bought winery tours.
Salahi's declaration of candidacy is meaningless until Jan. 1. Virginia law prohibits the State Board of Elections from accepting the declarations until the year in which the elections are scheduled, said board senior official Chris Piper.
Salahi and his wife, Michaele, breezed in uninvited to a White House state dinner in 2009, and were able to meet President Barack Obama.

Comedian Lewis Black had a few things to get off his chest about the Republican Party last night on Rachel Maddow's show, before unwinding on her semi-regular cocktail segment. For one, he hates the "toe the line" mentality of the Republicans, considering it "as if it were the Communist Party." He also has some unsavory words for Rep. Eric Cantor, and concludes with a libertarian-sounding call to just leave everyone alone.

Judson Phillips, the founder of Tea Party Nation, appeared on Fox News this morning and called out top Republican leaders in Congress for their inaction on the Fast & Furious gunrunning scandal. Phillips accused Gop leaders like John Boehner and Eric Cantor of just "sitting there" and "not picking a fight with the president" instead of making the case a priority.

Rupert Murdoch may not have been on Twitter for long but he already has 195,897 followers, and probably more by the time you read this.
But the media magnate follows just 19 users. And six of them are related to his own companies, such as The Sun, The Times, New York Post, Wall Street Journal, Fox News and his Us iPad outlet, The Daily.
He also follows the cutting edge All Things D, which specialises in reporting on digital innovation and startup companies. And he reveals his political taste with Ricochet, a forum for right-of-centre thinkers.
That leaves a select 11 individuals. Some are fairly predictable, such as Bill Gates, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and Britain's favourite TV entrepreneur Lord (Alan) Sugar. More surprising perhaps is the Afghan media owner Saad Mohseni, who runs the Moby Group.

On CNN's Starting Point, Monday morning, Soledad O'Brien grilled Republican Congressman Eric Cantor over his recent endorsement of Mitt Romney and whether the former Massachusetts governor was a "true conservative." "Sounds like you're saying the economy, the economy, the economy. I'm curious to know if you're also saying that by your support, it's really Mitt Romney who is the true conservative here?" O'Brien questioned.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) is advocating for a 20 percent tax deduction for all small businesses, which he says will help them create jobs despite the current economic climate.
The breadth of that proposal could lead to some surprising beneficiaries. The Small Business Administration defines a "small business" as one with fewer than 500 employees, regardless of income.
That means the bill, which has not yet been drafted, could give a helping hand to companies from Donald Trump's Trump Tower Sales & Leasing, which has 20 employees and annual sales of about $960,000, to adult film distributor Vivid Entertainment, which has 50 employees and makes a yearly estimated $5,000,000.
Cantor spokeswoman Laena Fallon told Roll Call that the proposal didn't include a revenue cap, but was still being refined:
“We still do not have legislative text but are cognizant of how this issue might relate to professional sports teams and the like,” she said.

Lovelace is casting up, with cutie Adam Brody joining as Deep Throat costar Harry Reems (snicker). Demi Moore is going to play Gloria Steinem, which makes sense in a lot of ways, yet my brain finds it really hard to picture. Amanda Seyfried is playing the title role.
Why do gay people always feel the need to tell people they're gay?
The year-long exposure via pinhole camera of the Toronto skyline is done. It doesn't really look anything like I thought it would.
Scientists have figured out that the way to keep Venice from sinking is to pump in more water. Specifically, they need to reverse the process of pumping out the groundwater in the marsh, because that was what was holding the clay up. It did seem like a good idea 100 years ago.
The Iron Lady (not Michele Bachmann, no matter what she thinks) opened in just four theaters...

Seinfeld fans and disaffected revelers otherwise: Happy Festivus!
As you gather around your aluminum pole, air your grievances and perform feats of strength, it's good to know the origin of the holiday. Most people became aware of the holiday from the 1997 Seinfeld episode called "The Strike" that introduced the celebration to the world. Frank Costanza, played by Jerry Stiller, explained his long-lost celebration to bagel-slinging Kramer, recalling a destroyed doll and a frustration with consumerism. It goes much deeper than that, though.
As writer Dan O'Keefe told the New York Times back in 2004, the holiday actually came from his own father, who originally celebrated it in 1966 as an anniversary of his first date with O'Keefe's mother. Over the years, it became more involved, with traditions such as putting clocks in bags getting added to the equation.
In 2010, Stiller aired his grievances with a shot at Rep. Eric Cantor, who was...

It has been several years of Tea Party protests demanding Americans take back their country. With the Occupy Wall Street protests in full swing, Jon Stewart took a segment today to figure out who exactly the country had to be taken back from, and how Rep. Eric Cantor and other vocal Tea Party supporters were reacting to Occupy Wall Street. Unsurprisingly, he found a bit of a disconnect between action and rhetoric.

As the Occupy Wall Street protests turn one month old today, progressives are making the rounds to call on those in government to listen to their demands. Eric Cantor's recent comments on income inequality were proof "the ice is cracking all around the Republican Party."...

On Fox News Sunday today, Congressman Eric Cantor clarified remarks he made last week about the Occupy Wall Street protests and expressed personal concerns with some of his colleagues who have been publicly allying themselves with the movement in going after big business and the financial sector. Chris Wallace played a clip of Cantor saying he was "worried" about the Occupy Wall Street "mobs" that have been spreading throughout the U.S.
