With the 2024 presidential election getting closer, twice-impeached former president is turning hard on his party. It’s getting to a point where Seth Meyers thinks it’s not outside the realm of possibility for Trump to eventually backtrack his long criticisms of Barack Obama.
During his “A Closer Look” segment on Thursday night, Meyers mocked Florida governor Ron DeSantis for attracting “the bloodshot Eye of Sauron” as he potentially gets closer to announcing a presidential bid. And indeed, on Monday, Trump released a video railing on DeSantis, claiming that Florida was “doing great” long before he became the governor, and praising DeSantis’ predecessor, Democrat Charlie Crist.
Now, obviously, praising a Democrat is exceedingly out of the ordinary for the twice-impeached former president. But, Meyers argued, the video could be a pretty good indicator of things to come.

Though “Dank Brandon” memes be be proliferating on your timeline, don’t forget that President Biden has supported America’s war on drugs for decades; he even wrote many of the laws that helped build a punitive criminal justice system for marijuana offenders.
On Thursday, Biden announced on Twitter that he would pardon all people convicted of simple marijuana possession under federal law. The move was met with acclaim from the majority of people (not everyone, though — Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas called it “a desperate attempt to distract from failed leadership”). GOP Rep.

“Time to make Ron DeSantis a one-term governor,” California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote today of the Florida leader. Newsom proposed to do so by donating $100,000 to DeSantis’ opponent in the November midterm, Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla).
Newsom posted the statement on Twitter along with a link to an ActBlue fundraising page and the prompt, “Who will join me in helping Charlie become the next Governor of Florida?”

The race for this year’s Emmy for Best Narrator just got its highest-profile potential nominee. Former President Barack Obama could very well win this category for his voice-over work in Netflix’s five-part docuseries “Our Great National Parks,” which premiered on April 13.
Obama’s narration helps the series explore the ecosystems that exist in the national parks of the United States, as well as in reserves all over the world. The show also looks at the role that humans play in threatening those ecosystems while also showing our ability to create these monuments to preservation.

The series was produced by Higher Ground Productions, which was founded in 2018 by Barack and Michelle Obama. While the company, which has an exclusive deal with Netflix, has only been around for four years, it has already proved to be a major player in awards races.

Updated: An invitation Britney Spears posted on Instagram yesterday from two congressmen was sent in December, but Democrats Charlie Crist of Florida and Eric Swalwell of California say the offer still stands.
Crist yesterday tweeted Spears’ post and made clear that they’d still like to have the benefit of her experience with respect to conservatorships.
The Florida Rep. is co-sponsor of a bill, the Guardianship Accountability Act, that was introduced last year after Spears successfully got out of her conservatorship. There’s also a similar bill in the Senate.
“Thank you so much for sharing your story of strength and perseverance, Ms. @BritneySpears,” wrote Crist “It’s my honor to invite you to meet with us in DC. Your voice helps other victims feel so much #stronger.”

More than 100 Democrats in the House and Senate and independent Bernie Sanders have signed a letter urging the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to negotiate a fair contract with IATSE, saying, “We are united in our belief in the importance of livable wages, sustainable benefits, and reasonable rest periods between shifts and during the workday” – three of the union’s core demands.
The letter was signed by 31 senators and 87 representatives and sent to AMPTP president Carol Lombardini.
The union’s members begin voting on strike authorization Friday in advance of what could be the last round of bargaining before a strike that would shut down film and TV productions across the country.
The politicians also reminded Lombardini that industry workers “risked their health and safety” during the pandemic, and that “the entertainment you jointly produce is helping to heal our nation.”

Britney Spears conservatorship inspired two House lawmakers to introduce legislation on Tuesday to replace their private guardian.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-sc), wearing a “Free Britney” T-shirt, and Rep. Charlie Crist (D-fl) appeared on Morning Joe to talk about their bill called the Freedom and Right to Emancipate from Exploitation Act, or Free Act.
The legislation would give all Americans the right to petition a court to have their conservator replaced with a public guardian, even if they have not proven misconduct or abuse. It also would guarantee that anyone under conservatorship be assigned an independent caseworker to monitor signs of abuse or neglect, and it would require that the guardians disclose their finances to make sure that there are no conflicts of interest.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis approved Florida’s $101.5 billion budget, which includes a large chunk of Covid-19 federal relief funds from the American Relief Plan, which DeSantis once described as “Washington at its worst.”
Most of the approximately $9 billion federal relief funds will go to police, teachers and first responders, including $1,000 bonus checks for teachers, principals and first responders. Florida was able to increase its budget from last year by more than $9 billion, in large part due to the federal funds, combined with additional revenue the state generated beyond what state economists had predicted.

Sean Hannity said an NBC News executive credited him for keeping Joy Reid in 2018 on the air after the MSNBC host faced fallout from her old blog posts.
Hannity’s comments arose Monday night while interviewing Rick Santorum about his recent ouster from CNN. He noted, “I don’t believe in boycotts, Senator. I have never supported one. I never will.”
Hannity pointed first to his defense of Bill Maher in 2014 and then his defense of Reid in 2018.
“When Joy Reid was in trouble, I was called by an NBC executive that said, ‘Your public comments played a big role in us being able to keep her,’ meaning her job. She wrote me a nice note,” he said. “I said people can make mistakes and move on, but not anymore.”

Filmmaker Aaron Kunkel fashions an absorbing true-crime narrative with a danceable beat from the testimonies of exploited pop celebrities, bilked investors, criminal investigators and not-so-quietly aghast onlookers in “The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story.” Briskly efficient in its construction and execution, the documentary, which will be available to YouTube Premium subscribers starting April 3, focuses on the high times and low dealings of the Orlando-based music impresario and Ponzi scheme swindler who famously launched the groups *Nsync and Backstreet Boys — and infamously used their success to provide a patina of legitimacy for his complex web of bank and investor fraud.
Kunkel demonstrates his own instinct for showmanship by starting his story in the early 1990s, when Pearlman — a small-time, Queens-born wheeler-dealer who reinvented himself in Florida as head of an air-charter business — culled two groups of teenage hunks from the ranks of young entertainers at Disney World and other Orlando-area tourist attractions,...

Ann Coulter has fired back at Joy Reid over a series of newly resurfaced tweets from the early 2010s in which the MSNBC anchor joked about “that Coulter dude.”
Speaking to TheWrap, Coulter sidestepped Reid’s old online taunts but questioned the MSNBC host’s standing to speak about black issues in the United States since the MSNBC host’s parents immigrated from Congo and British Guiana.
“I think MSNBC would be better off hiring an African American with roots in this country, instead of a 2d generation immigrant who poses as the oppressed descendant of American slaves,” Coulter said.

MSNBC declined to comment for this story.
Reid has taken heavy flak over the last week after Mediaite reporter Caleb Ecarma revealed transgender jokes and other content attacking Lgbt individuals on Twitter and on Reid’s long-defunct blog “The Reid Report” which predates her time at MSNBC.
The latest was a series of tweets from 2010 and 2011 about Coulter, falsely suggesting that the conservative firebrand and best-selling author “is a dude.”

The MSNBC anchor said this week many of the new posts that have recently surfaced were fabricated and also suggested, without substantiation, that hackers somehow managed to tamper with the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine to deliberately add embarrassing content to her old blog.
“In December I learned that an unknown, external party accessed and manipulated material from my now-defunct blog, The Reid Report, to include offensive and hateful references that are fabricated and run counter to my personal beliefs and ideology,” Reid told TheWrap in a statement.
The Internet archive disputed that claim in a blog post on Tuesday, saying that while Reid’s lawyers had demanded the old material be taken down, the website could find no evidence of hacking.

“When we reviewed the archives, we found nothing to indicate tampering or hacking of the Wayback Machine versions. At least some of the examples of allegedly fraudulent posts provided to us had been archived at different dates and by different entities,” said Chris Butler, the Director of Open Libraries at the Internet Archive.
Though MSNBC began circulating a statement from a cybersecurity expert attesting to Reid’s position, many said the tampering that Reid has claimed would be impossible given how the Archive worked.
“The Wayback Machine captured these posts at or near the time they were posted – over ten years ago. For this account to make sense, someone would have had to access Reid’s blog with Dark Web credentials, then travel back in time,” said BuzzFeed’s Joe Bernstein.

The controversy over Reid’s social media commentary first began last year when Mediaite dug up old blog posts from Reid mocking then-Florida governor Charlie Crist, repeating speculation that he was a closeted homosexual — which he has repeatedly denied.
Reid apologized for those posts in a statement to TheWrap and Crist himself said it was water under the bridge.

Things might get heated Tuesday night during the CNN-moderated Florida governor's debate, so will moderator Jake Tapper cool things off with a fan? “I plan to discuss fans, air-conditioning units, heaters and other climate appliances as little as possible,” Tapper joked to TheWrap about the “fangate” controversy over Democrat Charlie Crist bringing a blower to last week's debate with Gov. Rick Scott. Scott didn't come out to participate for several minutes because he took issue with Crist's little fan behind the podium. Voter Fraud. Hanging chads… they've got nothing on Florida's latest gubernatorial race scandal. In a segment “The Daily Show” has dubbed “The Last Perspiration of Crist,” host Jon Stewart tears apart the great “Crist Ball Fan” scandal of 2014, in which current Republican Florida Governor Rick Scott at first refused to appear on stage to debate Democratic challenger (and former Governor) Charlie Crist, because Crist had a small fan under his podium pointing upward towards his nether regions. “We have been told that Gov. Rick Scott will not be participating in this debate,” the moderator begins. Also see Stephen Colbert‘s take on.

Stephen Colbert on Thursday tore into the begrudging participants of a highly unusual debate that eventually took place in Florida earlier this week. On Wednesday, Republican incumbent governor Rick Scott and Democratic former governor Charlie Crist were scheduled to argue the midterm issues on stage and on Cspan. There was just one problem: Crist's desk fan. Scott's camp didn't want to allow candidates to have a fan under their podiums, a rule that Crist did not follow, and possibly contractually amended. Stephen Colbert is taking aim at a new ad trying to sway young women to "say yes" to voting Republican in the midterm elections. The Silversun Pickups have asked Mitt Romney's campaign to stop using their song "Panic Switch" at events. The band has issued a cease-and-desist order and released a statement Wednesday, roundly denouncing Romney and his campaign.
"We don't like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don't like the Romney campaign," frontman Brian Aubert wrote. "We're nice, approachable people. We won't bite. Unless you're Mitt Romney!"
A spokeswoman for the campaign told the Associated Press that while the campaign did not ask for permission for the song, it was allowed to play it under a "blanket licensing agreement." The campaign also said it would not play "Panic Switch" again.
The band suggested that Romney's use of the single was ironic because "he is inadvertently playing a song that describes his whole campaign."
Here's the song's chorus, as posted on online lyric websites:
